In the top, left picture, Phylora Feeback, Myrna Edington, and Walter Hardy give Thomas Newman an opportunity to make his point. Another type of organization for discussion is the group procedure illustrated by the picture at the top, right. Here Miss Olney ' s class divides itself into smaller groups andeach of these sections goes after the solution to aproblem. In the lowerpicture Nickie DiMarino points outone of the leaders of the world in a class taught by Mrs. Helms. As the pictures on this page illustrate, the social studies department makes wide use of maps, charts, globes, and visual aids of all kinds, mechanical and otherwise. In the top, left picture, students discuss some then and now maps of the United States. In the top, right, Mrs. Lawrence and a student assis- tant prepare to use the opaque projector to show slides to a class. And in the picture below, a class listens as an oral report is made. In the social studies classes, the students are given many opportunities to discuss ideas, andthey learn not only to present an opinion intelligently, but to respect the opinions of other people. 87

Pictured at top, left is another panel of students engaged in discussion of a social studies problem. The students are Rosco Davis, Bill Ferris, Judy Monohan, Billy MacArthur, and Linda Hinnant. The picture at right shows Mr. Bolickand a student assistant preparingto use the movie projector in a social studies class. Movies, slides, and filmstrips help make the subject matter come alive” in the social studies classes. In the lower picture, Mrs. Chavatel and her class listen to an oral report of a study made by one of the students on some topic of interest to the group.
