to Mr. George R. Chavatel, instructor in art, we fondly dedicate this record of happy hours made profitable at Warwick Junior High. Mr. Chavatel is congenial, friendly - greatly interested . He brings to class that spark of enthusiasm which ignites imagination and inspires students to greater effort. A man that has a taste of music, painting, or architecture, is like one that has another sense, when compared with such as have no relish for these arts. Addison 4

foreword the lighter side, the humorous, the smile instead of the very serious look. Let ' s play up the bright side in this year ' s annual. The Staff Why? Perhaps because the people who put this yearbook together agree that laughter, which expresses the joy of living, is here to stay. It ' s part of being young. Laughter expresses, if uneasily at times, our faith that today and the days ahead are worth our best effort - and our bright- est smile. Staff members are as sure as anybody that the champion smile is the one which is genuine, sincere, - not something put on artfully or artificially in an effort to impress other people. A smile should reflect what one feels inside, and is not an exterior design flashed on and off depending on who ' s looking. One more thing: the staff is well aware that the business of going to school, and becoming educated, is a very serious business. Not many of us grin from ear to ear as we sit down to an hour of algebra home- work. It is of utmost importance that every student take his schoolwork seriously; that he put forth his best effort all the time; that he accept responsibility, and always use good judgment every day in every thing he does. The staff does not, in any way, wish to minimize the necessity for every student to take school seriously, to think responsibly, and to act with dignity. Our book this year simply says, Lookup - not down ; Smile -don ' t frown. Like Talk happiness. The world is sad enough Without your woe. No path is wholly rough. Talk faith. The world is better off without Your uttered ignorance and morbid doubt. Talk health. The dreary, never-ending tale Of mortal maladies is more than stale; You cannot charm or interest or please By harping on that minor chord, disease. Say you are well, or all is well with you, And God shall hear your words and make them true. Wilcox Laugh and the world laughs with you; Weep and you weep alone; F or the sad old earth must borrow its mirth, But has trouble enough of its own. Wilcox

Mr. C. This caricature is a sort of self-portrait , done by our Mr. Chavatel himself. Although Mr. Chavatel is accus- tomedto being called upon to furnish a variety of art work for this and for that in a daily stream of requests, the annual staff had to resort to some crafty” persuasion to get this little item. By tradition, the dedication of the yearbook is a secret with the annual staff until the books are dis- tributed. This year the staff hopes to announce the dedication at a stu- dent assembly sometime in the late spring, when the ' 60 edition of the CAVALIER comes from the press. A merrier man, Within the limit of becoming mirth, I never spent an hour ' s talk withal. ' Shakespeare
