assistants... Above, Mr. Custer is pictured with Miss Davis, and in the picture below Mr. Bennett is shown with Mrs. Mahanes. A laugh is worth one hundred groans in any market. Charles Lamb Mr. Custer Our assistant principals are Mr. Jack M. Custer and Mr. Kenneth B. Bennett. School secretaries are Miss Audrey Davis and Mrs. Joseph W. Mahanes. Mr. Custer came to Junior High in 1957, following five years of teaching mathematics at Warwick High School. He has B.S. and M.Ed. degrees from the College of William and Mary. Miss Davis attended Madison College, and she was secretary at Warwick High for two y ears before coming here in 1956. Mr. Bennett, who joined the staff this school year, has a B.S. degree from West Virginia Institute of Technology, and a M.Ed. degree from the College of William and Mary. Before coming to Junior High, Mr. Bennett taught at Botetourt High School and at Newport News High School. Mrs. Mahanes did substitute teaching at Briarfield Elementary before coming to Junior High.

Mr. Joseph D. Amott Mr. Amott has been principal of Junior High since the school was established in Sept- ember 1956. From the very first it was obvious that under his leadership the school would build a reputation of which the community feels proud. Any visitor to Junior High sees an orderly, well-mannered, happy group of boys and girls, going about the business of school life in ways that reflect the quality of Mr. Amott ' s adminis- tration. Last year, when the students first published a school annual, our principal was the unanimous choice when deciding the dedication. He com- mands the respect and admiration of all the students, and our loyalty to him increases as the years pass. Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe. H.G.
