t(ie 1960 Cavalier Published for the students by the yearbook staff WARWICK JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Newport News, Virginia To dry one ' s eyes and laugh at a fall, And, baffled, get up and begin again. Browning foreword the lighter side, the humorous, the smile instead of the very serious look. Let ' s play up the bright side in this year ' s annual. The Staff Why? Perhaps because the people who put this yearbook together agree that laughter, which expresses the joy of living, is here to stay. It ' s part of being young. Laughter expresses, if uneasily at times, our faith that today and the days ahead are worth our best effort - and our bright- est smile. Staff members are as sure as anybody that the champion smile is the one which is genuine, sincere, - not something put on artfully or artificially in an effort to impress other people. A smile should reflect what one feels inside, and is not an exterior design flashed on and off depending on who ' s looking. One more thing: the staff is well aware that the business of going to school, and becoming educated, is a very serious business. Not many of us grin from ear to ear as we sit down to an hour of algebra home- work. It is of utmost importance that every student take his schoolwork seriously; that he put forth his best effort all the time; that he accept responsibility, and always use good judgment every day in every thing he does. The staff does not, in any way, wish to minimize the necessity for every student to take school seriously, to think responsibly, and to act with dignity. Our book this year simply says, Lookup - not down ; Smile -don ' t frown. Like Talk happiness. The world is sad enough Without your woe. No path is wholly rough. Talk faith. The world is better off without Your uttered ignorance and morbid doubt. Talk health. The dreary, never-ending tale Of mortal maladies is more than stale; You cannot charm or interest or please By harping on that minor chord, disease. Say you are well, or all is well with you, And God shall hear your words and make them true. Wilcox Laugh and the world laughs with you; Weep and you weep alone; F or the sad old earth must borrow its mirth, But has trouble enough of its own. Wilcox to Mr. George R. Chavatel, instructor in art, we fondly dedicate this record of happy hours made profitable at Warwick Junior High. Mr. Chavatel is congenial, friendly - greatly interested . He brings to class that spark of enthusiasm which ignites imagination and inspires students to greater effort. A man that has a taste of music, painting, or architecture, is like one that has another sense, when compared with such as have no relish for these arts. Addison 4 Mr. C. This caricature is a sort of self-portrait , done by our Mr. Chavatel himself. Although Mr. Chavatel is accus- tomedto being called upon to furnish a variety of art work for this and for that in a daily stream of requests, the annual staff had to resort to some crafty” persuasion to get this little item. By tradition, the dedication of the yearbook is a secret with the annual staff until the books are dis- tributed. This year the staff hopes to announce the dedication at a stu- dent assembly sometime in the late spring, when the ' 60 edition of the CAVALIER comes from the press. A merrier man, Within the limit of becoming mirth, I never spent an hour ' s talk withal. ' Shakespeare “ 5fiis 9s (jde Place B. Stevenson The things that haven ' t been done before, Those are the things to try; Columbus dreamed of an unknown shore, At the rim of the far-flung sky. Guest With doubt and dismay you are smitten, You think there ' s no chance for you, son? Why the best books haven ' t been written, The best race hasn ' t been run. B. Braley The only limit to our realization of to- morrow will be our doubts of today. Let us move forward with strong and active faith. Franklin D. Roosevelt So the students of Warwick Junior High School nicknamed themselves cavaliers in an election during the first year the school was in opera- tion - 1956. Junior high school is truly an adventure - in so many ways. And, for the most part, students enter eagerly upon this adventure. New hori- zons, and new visions, new opportunities and new responsibilities, are presenting themselves every day at Junior High. We are, indeed, CAVALIERS. concentration Above the pitch, and off the hinges. Rabelais In A Blue and Pensive Mood Steady now A big book is a big nuisance. Callumachus It is grievous to be caught. Amott Mr. Amott has been principal of Junior High since the school was established in Sept- ember 1956. From the very first it was obvious that under his leadership the school would build a reputation of which the community feels proud. Any visitor to Junior High sees an orderly, well-mannered, happy group of boys and girls, going about the business of school life in ways that reflect the quality of Mr. Amott ' s adminis- tration. Last year, when the students first published a school annual, our principal was the unanimous choice when deciding the dedication. He com- mands the respect and admiration of all the students, and our loyalty to him increases as the years pass. Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe. H.G. Wells assistants... Above, Mr. Custer is pictured with Miss Davis, and in the picture below Mr. Bennett is shown with Mrs. Mahanes. A laugh is worth one hundred groans in any market. Charles Lamb Mr. Custer Our assistant principals are Mr. Jack M. Custer and Mr. Kenneth B. Bennett. School secretaries are Miss Audrey Davis and Mrs. Joseph W. Mahanes. Mr. Custer came to Junior High in 1957, following five years of teaching mathematics at Warwick High School. He has B.S. and M.Ed. degrees from the College of William and Mary. Miss Davis attended Madison College, and she was secretary at Warwick High for two y ears before coming here in 1956. Mr. Bennett, who joined the staff this school year, has a B.S. degree from West Virginia Institute of Technology, and a M.Ed. degree from the College of William and Mary. Before coming to Junior High, Mr. Bennett taught at Botetourt High School and at Newport News High School. Mrs. Mahanes did substitute teaching at Briarfield Elementary before coming to Junior High. You have to believe in happiness, Or happiness never comes Ah, that ' s the reason the bird can sing - On the darkest day he believes in Spring. Mallock Twixt the optimist and the pessimist The difference is droll: The optimist sees the doughnut But the pessimist sees the hole. M. Wilson What ' s the use of worrying? I want to be all that I am capable of be- coming This all sounds very streneous and serious. But now that I have wrestled with it, it ' s no longer so. I feel happy - deep down. All is well. Mr. Bruno has spared no effort to mold this organization into one of the finest junior high school bands to be found anywhere. At Junior High, these students establish a program of work normally followed through high school. Modern foreign languages and a second year of algebra are recent new offer- ings at Junior High. There is no formal graduation at our school. There is, how- ever, a ninth grade assembly, late in the spring, at which various awards are made. Parents are always welcomed at these assemblies.
