Pe: coat GETTIN’ IN THE GROOVE WARWICK HIGH SCHOOL 91 COPELAND LANE NEWPORT NEWS, VA 23601 VOLUME 63 Opening 1 Openir With the opening of school, comes many new and exciting things. There are the tired eyes of students having to wake-up early. The bare legs of students wear- ing shorts during an excruciating heat wave. As the day wears on, students and teachers alike begin to feel the dread of eating first lunch, or should we say first break- fast. After lunch students begin to slow down as they anticipate their final two classes of the day. However, those studious persons who signed-up for a seventh period class still have three periods left to attend. When the other students leave school at 1:45 those persons have to stay until 2:50 for their seventh period class. Even as the sun sets on the first day of school, students have already become part of the groove of everyday school life. 1 ( ’§ School TABLE OF CONTENTS BEATE (CILANSSIe3 FACUIEIY CLUBS SPORTS ADS INDEX ANNUAL THANKS 2-17 13-91 92-103 104-143 144-183 184-199 200 Greg Hattchet tries to si: Cara Casey stays ‘“‘cool”’ during the heat wave Mary Beth Beane shows her dissatisfaction with the new “‘times’’. 00@ 20@ Opening of School 3 SREY DEE DERN DIE Seniors Kim Hogge and Sandy Hicks return from lunch. Monica Wells, Alneda Clark, and Shannon Clint Edwards, Susan Dixon, Sarah Wible, Laura Kirk, Mark St. Ours and Chuck Forrester show Durham eagerly await the dismissal bell their favorite colleges. Seniors have always been ‘“‘in the groove’, but this year there are a couple of new grooves that have made 1985 a year to remember. First, school starts at 7:30. Who can groove when your still asleep? Then there’s first lunch, (BREAK- FAST) , at 10:10. It is groovy getting out at 1:45; unless your taking a sev- enth period to make sure you have all the graduation requirements. Of course there are the well worn grooves that all seniors have gotten into: English, Government, and SACI: Joey Weinberg, David Darden, Ray Savage, and Adam Birt show their school spirit by wearing their jerseys. Tony Teravainen and Julie Kinard take time out from senior duties to talk 4 , Julie Callis prepares to begin yet another long day Sterling Crutchfield and Debra Little take a mo- ment to reflect on the day’s events Senior Life 7 Laura Webb and Kim Crigger return from a short lunch. Varsity Football 151 After a sterling opening victory over Dinwiddie (26-0), the Var- sity Football team ran into hard times losing 3 straight games to Lafayette, Menchville, and the eventual state champion, Hampton. The Raiders then showed their true metal as they put together six straight victories, including three shutouts and twenty two quarters without a touchdown being scored upon the defense. The 7-3 record was the fourth best in Warwick’s history and earned War- wick a tie for third place in the Peninsula District. The defense was led by All-State linebacker, Ray Savage, along with first team All-District performer Derek Steele (DE), second team All-District end David Carmichael and defensive back Terry Shepard. Seniors Thomas Pittman (DE), Burnell Pulley (CLB), Adam Birt (CLB), Eric Robinson (DB), and Curtis Fleming (T) made significant contributions to a defense that allowed only 2.8 yards per snap. Juniors Joe Prince (T), Kevin Byrd (LB), Larry Stith (CLB, DB) and Calvin Massey (S), along with sophomore Derrick Christopher (T) rounded the primary contributers for the defense. The Raiders defense allowed only 7.4 points per game. The offense was led by All-District Quarterback David Darden as he became the first thousand yard passer for the Raiders in recent years. After many, many years of dominating the Peninsula District, the Varsity Basketball team fell on hard times, losing eleven games by less than 5 points per game. The early season loss of Lamont Swittenberg with a broken wrist proved to be devastating to the Raiders. ‘“‘Cook”’ came back at mid-January but never was able to regain his pre-season strength. The Raiders played well throughout most of their games, only to make critical mistakes at crucial times. Defense has always been the strong suit of Warwick’s past teams but somehow eluded them this year. Sporadic play and inconsistency plaqued the Raiders; however, there were some bright spots by individuals in many games. Each player had some outstanding games and everyone gave their all during practice and each game. Some tremendous come-backs and exciting plays were witnessed by many and no one ever counted out the Raiders. A missed free throw, a made field goal could have easily turned the season around. The Boys’ Cross Country team had to over- come many obstacles this year, one being the loss of graduated seniors. Another problem was the fact that the team was composed of young and inexperienced runners. Even though the team was not as experienced as some, the boys turned in some fine times and pushed them- selves beyond human ability at the Norfolk Catholic Invitational and William and Mary Invi- tational. The team was led this season by Junior Joe Nocon and received strong performances from Grant Sharp, Pedro Fernandez, Ned West, Chris Crank, Reid Hanks, Joe Whittaker, and Matt McKercher. Coach Holly Crockett discusses strategy with his team before a meet. Freshman Grant Sharp struggles to cross the finish line. Gymnastics 179 io ES CALE The Varsity Wrestling team was in a rebuilding stage during the 1985-86 season. The graduation of last year’s seniors left the team with only three returning varsity wres- tlers. However, the season proved to be beneficial to the returnees. Warwick had three wrestlers who placed fourth in Dis- trict and advanced to Regionals. These were Rod Melvin, Matt Brown, and Ed Fuller. Unfortunately, Matt Brown was unable to attend because of a shoulder problem. Under the new Head Coach Paul McVicker and Assistant Coach Eric Hogan, a team of nine members showed that they were determined enough to learn the sport and give it their all every day. These wrestlers have proven that there are better things to come in the future. During another long practice, Alexander Lucas and Ed Fuller work on takedowns.
