For her help, thoughfulness, kindness, and understanding, the Annual Staff would like to dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Rosie Walsh. Mrs. Walsh sponsored The Warwick for five years, and due to the large number of Spanish students, she was forced to give up the position. Among her many responsibilities, Mrs. Walsh contributed many hours to the yearbook, giving up time that could have been spent with her family. The Annual Staff deeply regrets losing such a fine sponsor. Thank you Mrs. Walsh for all of your time and friendship Rosie now rejoins the family that was put on hold for the yearbook. 12 Features Kelly Stanley, Susan Dixon, and Debbie Speight, prepare for their pep rally perfor- mere Vonda Lynch wishes Jeff Speight luck in the game Varsity football players watch as the cheerleaders perform. He believes the first step to getting a good education is attending school regularly. To enforce this belief Mr. Stacey designed the PR program. The PR program’s (prevention rehabilitation) goal is to cut down on the number of students who do not attend class reg- ularly. Students who miss six or more unexcused days in any two classes are removed from their regular school and sent to a special afternoon school. At this school perfect attendance as well as good behavior and consistent academic perfor- mance are stressed. PR students may return to their regular school after a minium of two months attendance but not be- fore the end of a semester. An additional benefit of the PR program has been to re- duce disruptions in the hall and classroom, and student tardi- ness. Students, who attend class regularly, and teachers are 100% in favor of the program and hope it will improve the quality of education. Sports . . . a very vital part of life, espe- cially school life. School sports offer a chance to develop teamwork, skills, and leadership abilities, as well as provide a way to unify the student body. The sports program at Warwick provides individuals with an opportunity to develop self assurance. With this self assurance, these individuals not only bring the glory of victory to themselves, but also to their school. Sports bring enjoyment and entertainment to all members of the student body and faculty. Spectators crowd into Todd Stadium and the gym to view outstanding exhibits of hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship. Also, long hours of difficult practice seem to pay off when an athelete hears the enthusi- astic crowd roaring its encouragement. Victory alone does not bring glory. Glory is seen by the individual’s dedication to and participation in his or her particular sport. Sports Divider 109 The Thrill Of The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat; the Varsity Football team is no stranger to either one. They had a good season, winning tough games and loosing only to highly ranked teams. Hoping to capture the City Title, the Raiders suffered a heartbreaking loss to Ferguson in the last game of the regular season, causing them to tie for the City Championship. The season started long before the first game. Preparation began August 10 with long, hot days of practice, repeated drills, and scrimmages. The Varsity Football team is perhaps the most widely recognized team at Warwick High School. Weekly football games provide students a chance to show their school spirit by cheering and supporting their team. The offense listens intently to Coach Lyons as he gives instruc- tions. The team placed second in the Norfolk Catholic Invitational Meet and finished sixth in the district, an improvement over last season. The Raiders were led by Senior Ronald Majette. The Girls’ Cross Country team, defending dis- trict champions, had another outstanding season this year. They defeated all of their district oppo- nents and placed highly in all invitational meets. Coach Dirl Riddle had three major goals for the team at the beginning of the season. The first was for the team to win the Peninsula District Meet for the third consecutive year. The second goal was to attempt to win the Eastern Regional Meet. Finally, he wanted the team to place in the top ten at the State Championship Meet. The girls managed to accomplish two of the three goals. They finished first in the district, sec- ond in the region, and tenth in the state. Two starters from the 83-84 season re- turned for this year - Guy Fauntleroy and Darren Lassiter. Also returning were John Clark, Jimmy Stocks, James Moore, and Tom Pittman. The motivation factor for the success of the team was the enthusiam and intensity of basketball practices. When interviewed by the Daily Press - Times Herald, Lonnie Howell was quoted as saying, “We're Warwick. That scares the opponents. They know we can play because we’re Warwick. Just the name beats them sometimes.” This was true. The Warwick system of defenses was well-known, and perhaps gave the team an ex- tra advantage in winning their third District champi- onship in four years, as well as reaching their goal of going to the Regional playoffs. This years team was also unique in that three of its members were female. Angelia Moore, one of these three, was a returning starter from last year. Soccer 121 All That The glory was theirs! Our Warwick Raiderettes had a tremendous 1984-85 season. Taking second in the District and first in the Regionals, Warwick went to the State tournament, making the girls the first Peninsula team to qualify for state since 1979. Traveling to James Madison University, the girls played in the semi-finals to beat South Lakes. South Lakes had a twenty-game winning streak, but was defeated by a score of 35-30. During the finals, however, the girls were defeated and became the State Runner-Up for the 84-85 season . However, goalie Deborah Speight was injured while cheering, and was therefore out for the rest of the season. This looked like the end of the season for the varsity team, but the team members stuck together and a new and inexperienced goalie was chosen and put in position. Even through this situation, the team members continued to perform well and were re- warded with an even season of six wins and six losses. Some top scorers for the team were Paula Atkins, Sherri Foster, Gail Newman, Bonnie Rodwell, and Randy Edler. Inman: ee uge PT LT Waiting tor her turn to perform, Kim Robinson prepares her strategy. Our chapters name is Santa Te- resa de Jesus’. This organization was established to rec- ognize students of Spanish with a B average or better in the language. A student of Spanish is elligable for membership after he has maintained a B average throughout the first semester. A formal induction takes place in the spring after first semester. We are an honorary society. We help our school by providing tutoring for other Spanish students. Occasionally we have fund raising activities to help defray na- tional membership dues. This year we sold holiday napkins. The purpose of the German Club is to give students of German, the opportunity to experience german customs and traditions outside of class. Most activities are of a social nature, allowing the stu- dents to get to know each other better, as well as getting to know other german students in the city and state. In October, our club played the Menchville club in soccer. Although we lost, we all enjoyed a pizza feast afterwards. Warwick hosted the annual city-wide Oktoberfest, hosting students from Denbigh and Menchville. All were entertained with german food, music, and “‘mini-Olympic”’ events. The club is plan- ning a german Christmas party, a picnic, a trip to Busch Gardens, a bowling party and in March, Warwick, along with all the High Schols in the area, will sponsor the state German Students’ Convention. The process of computers had to be learned and that newly learned knowledge had to be ap- plied in such a way that it produced a year- ‘book. Lost discs, erased information, and glue messes were an every day occurence in the Annual Staff room. Due to all these problems, the yearbook would never have been pro- duced without the help of committed individ- uals. We are therefore grateful to the follow- ing: _ Beth Layton-for all the encouragement, sup- port, and time you gave us. Kyle Lawson-for producing and doing the artwork on the cover design. Robert Barbour-for the characature of Mr. Stacy. James Choung-for picture taking and artwork on divider pages. Brian Carver-for artwork on divider pages. Ads provide the needed money to publish the yearbook. Without the support from local businesses Warwick High School would not have a yearbook to look back and reflect on.
