At first, there seemed to be no pattern unifying element but as the year progressed it became evident that student life was like a puzzle. Each of the pieces were joined togeth- er to form the complete picture. School related activities, classes and clubs were incorporated with faculty, sports and the community’s involvement and support to create a well-rounded year. No one piece could have been left out without upsetting the delicate balance needed for the best year possible. In choosing the best that each had to of- fer, the students had to carefully weigh the advantages of everything offered to them during the year. The puzzle is an exacting design. Each piece must be fit carefully into the to- tal picture. Warwick High School made the best combinations even better. Introduction « 3 4 « Features Divider The monotonous regime of bells and classes was relieved by the special events planned by the SCA, clubs, and class executive boards. The hot sum- mer-like days were interrupted with pep rallies which had improved with skits and entertainment by the band. Even a regular day had its highlights— the pre-school gatherings in the halls, the lunch breaks and the stolen moments at the lockers. After school Special Features Add to the Puzzie hours were crowded with commitments to club functions and meetings. Week- ends were especially active as students found that fundraising, community service and school related activities claimed much of their waking hours. This piece of the school puzzle, however time-consuming, was perhaps the most critical toward completing the overall picture of student life. Features wivider 5 A. Putting it all together Perhaps the most important and the most overlooked aspect of a student’s life was the Faculty, Staff, and Admin- istration. When everything seemed to be wrong, guidance counselors were al- ways ready to help. Many teachers took the little extra effort necessary to make their classes fun. Not only did the teachers function in the role of educators, but also friends, advisors and helpers. Some teachers excelled in their teaching abilities to the point that they not only taught their classes but they made their students want to learn. Others concentrated their efforts on sponsoring the clubs and sports that made attending school more enjoyable. Most students had a favorite bus driver, a custodial friend, or someone especially helpful or friend- ly in the cafeteria, office or guidance. All in all the faculty, staff and adminis- tration were necessary to put the pieces of a student’s puzzling life to- gether. Classes offered the chance to learn and grow. As the years progressed, a student’s schedule became more and more his own. He chose his courses with the exception of the few necessary classes for graduation. The 83-84 school year opened a new field of study to Warwick in that the Computer Con- cepts course was begun. Outside of the classroom, time was found to be with friends. Lunches, hurried conversations in the hall and notes quietly passed un- der desks were the best means of communication. By placing ads in the various school publications, many businesses helped the school by supplying the necessary funds for printing. For example, each year the tuxedos for the Miss Warwick pageant were furnished and the program was sponsored as well. Even beyond the monetary value of the community’s support, the area businesses were places to shop, eat and look for jobs. Certain establishments became familiar as places to meet friends. Putt-Putt and both Newmarket and Coliseum malls were crowded on weekends with friends discussing the ups and downs of the last week. The community fulfilled the puzzle of student life in that it gave places to go after hours, it supplied the latest fads, and it pro- vided the jobs necessary to grow and succeed after high school. From among the many sports that were available, each student could find one that best fit his talents and interests. Field Hockey, Tennis, Golf, Baseball, Gymnastics and Soccer, to name a few, were offered during the school year. Sports helped to develop leadership skills, teamwork, coordina- tion and self-assurance. Basketball season brought enjoyment not only to the players but also to the many spectators as the school gath- ered together with hopes of defeating their rivals on the court. In football, the school rallied for a long awaited, successful season. Warwick became city champion in several sports. The enthusiasm of the winter teams carried the student body outside to support the spring events. As a part of the student life puzzle, sports gave all a chance to express their talents and join together for the various games, whether participant or spectator. Staff Appreciates Support “WHAT? THE DEADLINE’S WHEN?” : “Has anyone seen the c lub pic- tures?” ... “HELPII” ... “WHEWI—I can’t believe we finally made it!” Problems, problems—That was all the yearbook staff seemed to face. From a lost picture to a lost boyfriend or girlfriend, each affected the entire staff. Yet, every deadline was met on time, thanks to each and every mem- ber. Long hours were spent preparing for each deadline; lunch, after school, weekends and even enlisting non-staff people. These long hours were spent for the whole student body creating memories to last forever and achiev- ing a certain self-satisfaction. Even though Annual Staff is a non-credited, ungraded course, staff members learned perhaps more than from any other course at WHS. They realized the rewards of dedication, commitment, loyalty and friendship, and, most importantly, they accom- plished a job well done. We could not have done it without the help of certain special people. We are eternal- ly grateful to the following: Mr. Walsh—for being patient, understanding, for lots of babysitting and lost Saturdays; Mr. Way—for standing behind us supporting us; Mrs. Mabe—for selling yearbooks, helping at deadline, personal favors and moral support; Main Office Secretaries—for their help with picture distribution; Guidance—for assisting us in identifying all those students; Randy Parker—for his puzzles and W’s for the cover; Beth Layton—for answering all our questions, al- ways being there and giving us moral support; Parents—for all the chauffeuring to and from school on those many weekends; Teachers—for letting members get out of class to work on those close deadlines; Tom Knox—for his steady dependable services and as a professional photographer; Chris Glore—for his photographic assistance; Ned Carr—for his sports pictures; Mrs. Nan Rothufuss—for her last minute picture development; Ms. Carolyn Herren—for assisting in bookkeep- ing; Lee Hughes—for quick developing and dependable service at Fotomat; Billy Garrett—for printing, photographing, and meeting those last minute deadlines; Malika Asadi—for typing on the “index”; Local Businesses—for continuing support in ad- vertising; Mrs. Pat Holman—for her contributions to the memoriam page; To the producers of Coke, Reese Cups, Lays, Dunkin’ Donuts, etc. for giving us the “energy” needed for those long weekends; Mrs. Walsh—for your hard work, advice, kindness, friendship and for your caring enough about us to support us every step of the way. Not only did you help in class, but you went be- yond the call of duty and listened whenever we needed a problem solved. We thank you, Mrs. Walsh, from the bottoms of our hearts, for you have given us more than we deserve. Annual Thanks « 197 198 « Memoriam In Memoriam Anthony Lucas Yvette Hill Scott Marshall April 29, 1965—Oct. 23, 1983 June 20, 1968—Sept. 17, 1983 Jan. 26, 1967—Dec. 31, 1983 Not for the untimeliness of their deaths but for the quality of their liv- ing, we will think of them; Not for the brevity of their years but for the depth of their caring, we will remember them; Not for the sorrow in their passing from the stage of life but for the memorable parts they played, we will dedicate our lives to superior schol- arship, outstanding citizenship, noble character, and humble leadership. Anthony Lucas, Yvette Hill and Scott Marshall remain as portraits of the highest ideals established, encouraged, and admired at Warwick High School in athletics, the arts, and the academic pursuits. We are grateful that each of them, in memory, belongs to us. DEATH, BE NOT PROUD Death, be not proud, though some have called thee. Mighty and dreadful, for art not so; For those whom thou think’st thou dost overthrow Die not, poor Death; nor yet canst thou kill me. From rest and sleep, which but they pictures be, Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow; And soonest our best men with thee do go— Rest of their bones and souls’ delivery! Thou’rt slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men, And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell; And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well And better than thy stroke. Why swell’st thou then? One short sleep past, we wake eternally, And Death shall be no more: Death, thou shalt die. —by John Dunne Memoriam « 199 Bits and Pieces. . . Throughout the year, students discovered how impor- tant it was to become an integral part of student life, academics, sports and clubs. The part played by teachers, ad- ministration, and staff became a famil- iar piece of the day’s workings. There were ups and downs, too, but, in the end, it was obvious—just as no puzzle is complete without all of the pieces, life at Warwick High School is a com- posite of all of its facets. W.J.
