THE 1963 WARWICK EDNA KEGLEY MERRILL CURTIS ANN ROBINSON LESLIE DEYONG MARY FRANCES HANCOCK MRS. T. B. SANDERS Editor-In-Chief Copy Editor Picture Editor Business Manager Adveitising Manager Faculty Advisor Published For The Student Body by The Annual Staff of WARWICK HIGH SCHOOL Newport News, Virginia Foreword “Lost, yesterday, somewhere between sunrise and sunset, golden hours, each set with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered, for they are gone forever.’ Mrs. Sigourney The above quote is so very true. We of the 1962-63 annual staff feel that this year has been too meaningful to every student to be forgotten. We hope, as you thumb through the pages of THE WARWICK, you will be reminded of all the things that made this year outstanding— Those first confusing days last fall— the sole hop introducing Aurea Jorge, our exchange student— our new enemy, the IBM Machines— those dreadful smells from the chemistry lab— the sound of German in the halls— elections of homeroom officers— the two Merit semi-finalists— homecom- ing, without rain!— the Variety Show— college boards— bongo drums at basketball games— exams— new inter-club-council— leadership training week— SCA and class elections— Senior Prom— Senior Day— Exams again— and finally the most memora- ble of all events— Graduation! It has truly been a wonderful year worth remembering. However, the pass- ing of time may cause these memories to become dim in our minds. The annual has tried to preserve them forever in the following pages. 3 Advertisements l 4 5 MRS. G. WARREN TAYLOR Dedication To a person whose life revolves around her concern for all students. To a person who is never too tired or impatient to help her students and guide them in the right direction. To a person who is sincerely interested in what happens to her students, and always sees the good in people. To a person who, through her love of the subject she teaches, conveys this feeling to her students in interesting lessons, sparkled by an acute sense of humor. To a person whose devotion to her students and job have enabled her to further serve as head of her department. To a person who possesses these attributes which make her an inspiration to all, we dedicate this, the 1963 WARWICK to Mrs. G. Warren Taylor. 6 After some thought, she will undoubtedly come up with the correct answer. Giving her undivided attention to the students, Mrs. Taylor smiles, acknowledging her agreement with their comments. 7 10 Too many seamstresses spoil the dress. Films in government become more interesting every year. Jean Cole helps Margie Gillespie perfect her skill on the Parallel Bars. 11 Interested art students of Mr. Barclay Sheaks dili- gently work on their projects. Can you find the seniors? Grin and Bear it! 12 These boys are busily reading their health books, eager to learn more about this interesting course. An explosive combination! Students eagerly prepare for their careers as stenographers. 13 Hungry students crowd into the school cafeteria. Printing classes busily prepare headlines. Staff A members are desperately selling school seals. Richard Pugh and Diane Rash are never idle in the Book Store. 15 FACULTY ‘ Well arranged time is the surest mark of a well arranged mind.” Pitman stack Hi vt Administration MR. Mr. George Richards, our principal, supervises the management of the school, assisted by Mrs. Virginia Kostyal, and Mr. William Formichelli. Mrs. Kostyal is assistant principal and dean of girls, and Mr. Formi- chelli is also assistant principal and dean of boys. These three work together to guide pupils along the proper channels, and to show the Warwick High students the importance of a High School education. Consistent class absenteeism is discussed with the student by Mrs. Kostyal. Mr. Richards talks with Assistant Principal, Mr. Formichelli. Mrs. Virginia Kostyal, Assistant Principal and Dean of Girls is contacting sponsors for Girls’ State. Mr. William F. Formichelli, Assistant Principal and Dean of Boys. 19 Office Staff Office Assistants: Linda Leviner, Carolyn Douglas, Janet Parker, Lathonne Crain, Betty Williams, and Cary Jones. The Office Staff. Seated: Mrs. Lucille Leviner, Mr. Richard’s personal secretary and head of the office staff. Standing: Mrs. Alice Lundeen, transcripts; Mrs. Polly Pursifull, absentees and I. B. M.; and Mrs. Joan Mladek, bookkeeping and I. B. M.; and Mrs. Ilia Hamlett, absentees and clerical work. Five very essential ladies composed the office staff at Warwick High. Mrs. Lucille Leviner served as the secretary for Mr. Richards, the head of the office, and was in charge of the monthly reports. The new book- keeper was Mrs. Ilia Hamlett who also helped with attendance. Mrs. Polly Pursifull worked with the attend- ance and transcripts, the daily bulletin, and the guidance department typing. Mrs. Joan Mladek worked with the IBM machines. Although these new additions handled the class schedul- ing, report cards, and record-keeping of the attendance, plenty of preparation was necessary before these ma- chines even began their work. These vital preparations were accomplished by our faithful office staff who were appreciated by all at Warwick for their untiring efforts. Mrs. Hamlett gives Cary Jones a message to take to the school nurse. 20 Guidance Mrs. Josephine Muire and Miss Jean Atkinson, the full-time counselors. Guidance Counselors, Mr. Robert Fleet, Miss Shirley Mason, Miss Jean Atkinson, Mrs. Kay Palmer and Mrs. Josephine Muire. Guidance Assistants: from left to right — Carolyn Wigginton, Fran- ces Fry, Jeanne Williams, Joanne Hamilton, Virginia Baker, and seated is Trent Taylor. The Guidance Department was a very essential part of Warwick High, consisting of five counselors and student assistants. The Director of Guidance was Miss Jean Atkinson. Each student at Warwick had at least one appointment with his counselor to discuss his grades, his high school schedule, and post-graduate plans. The Guidance Department was in charge of the school standard testing program and, therefore, administered and interpreted these tests. A file of college and vocational material was available through this department for the assistance of the Warwick High students. Information concerning loans, scholarships, and student aid was also easily acquired through the Guidance Department. In addition to all this, the guidance counselors offered personal counseling pertaining to school and home problems, helpful hints for improvement of study habits and skills, and assistance in arranging “home-bound” study for sick students. The helpful guidance of Mrs. Muire is given to a stu- dent and her mother. MISS DELAURA ALBERTSON Home Economics Future Homemakers of America MISS PEGGY ANDREWS English, General Business MR. CLASSES “He lives long that lives well, and time misspent is not lived, but lost.” Fuller 30 ptember finally came and with it the fulfillment of a long-cherished dream; the class of ’63 had become seniors! It was hard to believe that they had reached this long awaited goal. They remembered the fall of 1958 when they entered Warwick Junior High as lowly eighth graders, looked down upon. They spent many years together, but the class truly became close when, as juniors, they worked on the Prom. With the arrival of their class rings, came the realization of their responsibility as upperclassmen. Now they were the leaders— the ones the underclassmen looked up to. They accepted the responsibilities entrusted them with pride and confidence, for they had years of experience behind diem. After much hard work, frustration, joy, and accomplish-, ment, their f inest year drew to a close by their own prom and graduation. It was the happiest and saddest time of their lives, but they looked forward to the unknown, a tear in their eyes and a glow in their hearts. They would always have the wonderful memories of their past high school days, and the same spirit that brought them dirough Warwick. GEORGE WOODROW ADKINS, JR. This long awaited distinction was, this year, bestowed on the Class of ’64. Although they were the smallest class in the school, due to the lecent split, the Junior Class overcame this deficiency and de- veloped into a closeknit, hard working group. Outstanding in the memories of all juniors was the Prom. Class officers and committee chairmen began preliminary planning during the summer. This year, the ( entire pi dm was reorganized, with several committees being added, eliminated, or combined. Committees began to meet in the fall and winter, and work was continued throughout the year. The finance committee, an addition this vear, was responsible for several money raising projects. Pei haps the most memorable of these were the Cool School Stools. Naturally, being “second in command” in the school, junior class members were in various other activities. Choral work and the band claimed a great many juniors, and many were active in athletics. The dramatic and literary fields were also enthusiastically supported by them. Many students were outstanding academically, receiving various honors for theii endeavois in this field. Of course, quite a few were active in SCA work, preparing to handle positions of even greater author- ity next year. ... With the arrival of their rings, the juniors realized that thev would soon be seniors, and take their places as the leaders of the school. These solemn thoughts, however, did not damper the enthusiasm with which they received the excitement of the traditional ring ceremony. When the year drew to a close the juniors looked back on their many experiences, and looked forward to the great responsibilities and tasks which they would undertake next year— their Senior year at Warwick. Now that they understood high school life, they began joining the school activities. In athletics, many of the boys participated in junior varsity football, basketball and track. Some of the boys were so proficient that they were placed on the varsity teams. The girls were not left out, as they improved their skill in hockey, archery, basketball and volleyball. Six girls from the class were chosen J.V. cheerleaders and became vital participants at the football and basketball games. The Sophomores also became active in the various S.C.A. organizations. They chose their class officers, homeroom officers and honor council representatives. The committees and clubs welcomed their services. As the year came to a close, the Sophomores had many happy memories. They had found this year that studies were becoming more specialized, and they would soon be gaining the responsibility and hard work involved in being upperclassmen. Freshman Class A title at last! Proudly, they were the Freshman Class of Warwick High School. The bewilderment of the past year was gone as they greeted old friends and reached their classes without any trouble. Adjusting to the school year was not as difficult as it was a year ago, but they found that the work was twice as hard. Although the work and s.udy took up much of their time, many freshmen were joining clubs and activities with whole-hearted enthusiasm. School spirit was not lacking in this class either. Two of the girls were chosen as J. V. Cheerleaders, and a deserving girl was selected to represent the class on the Homecoming Court. Many of the boys served well on the football, basketball, tennis, and track teams. The girls were not neglected in sports either. A well rounded program was offered and many girls found exciting new sports to enjoy. Participating in the school government was an im- portant part of their Freshman year. Representatives of homerooms and class officers were elected to act in the Senate and Congress. These capable leaders served their class well by helping with important projects. The whole class contributed new ideas which helped the school pro- gress and made their year successful. The year ended all too quickly for these industrious underclassmen. With their high goals fulfilled, they looked back on their year as Freshmen and looked ahead, with eagerness, to their coming years at Warwick High School. The next question in their minds was, “What are our responsibilities as high school students?” To start fulfilling their respon- sibilities, they elected class officers and chose an attendant for the homecoming court. Extra curricular activities were supported through ' ideas contributed in committee meet- ings and participated in various school clubs. Enthusiasti- cally they attended athletic events, dances, and plays. They will always remember their first year at War- wick High as an important and exciting time. They began a new phase of life. Will we be able to find our way around? Will we be able to get to our classes on time?” Many questions such as these were asked by the eighth graders as they looked forward to their first year of high school. Finally, after a summer of anticipation, they entered the doors of Warwick High School and received their first impression. It wasn’t quite as they had expected, though, for if they got lost, there was always someone there to guide them in the right direction. Although the continous stream of strange faces and the maze of corridors confused them, they soon learned their way around and made new friends. Led by ten seniors and the coaching staff of Romie Hamilton, Jim Snow, Sonny Quisenberry, and Jeff Apple- gate, the two opening games with Oscar Smith and Maury resulted in two losses. Granby was the team s first win, followed by a tie game with Norview. The other victory was over York on Homecoming night. The games with Great Bridge, Newport News, Hampton and Princess Anne saw Warwick fall short of their intended goal. On Thanksgiving Day, Ferguson squeezed by Warwick, giving them the first win in the start of a new rivalry. Although the ‘Framers” will lose many able senior players, they leave for next year’s team an experienced strong line and a speedy, aggressive backfield. 94 Co-Captains of the Varsity team are Charles Bacon and Ronnie Thomas. Mid-season injuries to such players as All-District David Walker, and aggressive Bill Bowman hurt them in their bid, however. The season was not without its high points, though, as the Farmers rolled to victories over such perennial District powers as Granby, Wilson, and Cradock, as well as local rivals Ferguson, Hampton, and York. This year’s team was built around a nucleus of three standout seniors; high scoring guard David Walker, talented rebounder Conway Smith, and sharpshooting Bill Bowman. The other seniors on the team included Ronnie Carmean, A1 Butterworth, David Hewett, and Howard Wiseman. The underclassmen were juniors Tommy Zehmer and Shep Holladay, and sophomores Danny and Dickie Walker and Billy Dunn. The “Farmers” who opened practice with six varsity veterans and three J. V. graduates, ended with six first year men wrestling due to injuries, academic problems, weight problems, and sickness. Only one veteran wrestled an entire season. Wayne Lewis, who finished with a 12-0 record, was the teams only undefeated matman. Both Lewis and Ron- nie Thomas (8-1) were rated as favorites in the Regional Tournament. Along with these two, Larry Smith (8-2), a logical contender for the Regional Tournament, was figured as one of Warwick’s top hopes for a place in the State Tournament. The varsity cheering squad, with the assistance of Mrs. Marcia Conway, faculty sponsor, has labored untiringly to promote sports- manship and spirit throughout the student body. These nine vivac- ious girls have been practising together since they were chosen last spring. Their goals for performance were perfection of motion, volume, pep, and togetherness. During the summer they attended a district cheerleading convention held at Princess Anne High School. On the first day of school they taught the favorite yells to the eighth graders and new transfer students. During football and basketball seasons they aroused enthusiasm at pep rallies and cheered the Farmers on to victory at the games. When victory was not obtained, the cheerleaders discouraged any displays of poor sportsmanship. As the fun filled year came to an end, these girls worked dili- gently to prepare prospective cheerleaders for the try-outs. Al- though being a cheerleader required many hours of strenuous work, all of them agreed that this position was a thrilling privilege. Varsity Football This year the Junior Varsity football team, having inexperienced players and facing rugged opposition, had a difficult season. Despite the fact that the final record was 2-4, all the players put fourth their best effort, work- ing with real determination. The team got off to a discouraging start as their first game of the season ended in a defeat to Hampton. The defeat of arch-rival Newport News boosted the morale of the team. Then, after several loses, the team again redeemed themselves with excellent display of defense against the York “Falcons” to win 13-12. Good Varsity potential was shown in the line play of center, Don Murphy; end, A1 Saunders, and in the backfield of Stuart Garrett, Marty Bonnett, Ray Smith, Lucius Carton, Larry Smart and Billy Parrish. Many maneuvers were tried but York failed to hold Warwick back. Striving to increase their ability in the activities and also earn their letter or star by the Point System set up, the students learned basic concepts in afternoon drills and were then placed on grade level teams. These teams participated in field hockey, baseball and volleyball against Newport News and Ferguson High Schools. Girls from the eighth through twelfth grades also took part in apparatus and tumbling, tennis, track and field events, softball, folk and modern dance, and archery. Participating in the annual field hockey tournament, the Senior team went undefeated and placed four girls on the Tidewater Allied East Hockey Team. Later, in the fall, a demonstration was given in tumbling and apparatus by members of Old Dominion College. The members of the G.R.A. were quite pleased with the year’s accomplishments. G. R. A. Executive Council: Conway Smith, Joey Winn, Cheryl Ballard, Margie Gillespie. The S.C.A. Executive Council was reduced to four people when the new constitution was adopted in the Spring of 1962. This meant that each officer would have more responsibility in the planning of school activities. The largest aim of the year was to raise the money for a $500 scholarship which was awarded to a deserving student. To accomplish this, the S.C.A. sponsored a talent show, a madras and hemp belt sale, and school dances. Under the leadership of Conway Smith the Executive Council elected the “Students of the Month,” the “Very Important Farmers,” conducted Congress meetings, and for the first time sent delegates to the Southern Associa- tion of Student Councils. Many thanks should be given to Miss Beverly Draucker for the patience and understanding she employed as she advised the council. S.C.A. Duties and aims of the Senate were the donation of the S.C.A. glass covered bulletin board to the National Honor Society for the posting of the Honor Roll; the continuation of “School Spirit,” “Leadership Training,” and “Brotherhood” weeks. Other activities were the send- ing of delegates to federation meetings with other school governments and the establishment of a projects commit- tee to aid the classes in raising funds. In addition to these, it encouraged and promoted school spirited participation in all activities, making 1962-63 a year of achievement. Selling belts was also a project in which the Senate took a part. Members of the Senate discuss the selling of Variety Show tickets. 115 Arthur, Conway and Bill plan activities for the S. C. A. House of Representatives The House of Representatives functioned for the first time this year under the new S.C.A. Constitution. This branch of the S.C.A. consists of all the homeroom presi- dents and the S.C.A. department heads. The main purpose of the House of Representatives is to bring the student body closer to the executive branch of the S.C.A. Although it is a separate branch, it can meet only with the Senate and the Executive Council. During Congress meetings, it is the responsibility of the homeroom presidents to state the interests and ideas of the people in homerooms. They are equally responsible to report to their homerooms all the business of Congress and explain why such action was taken. The Executive branch, composed of eleven students, two members from the eighth, ninth, tenth and eleventh grades and three from the twelfth grade, elected by the S.C.A. Congress, interviewed the student violator and emphasized the importance of honor in his life. The bond between the Executive Council and the students was the Honor Committee which helped by maintaining a student-to-student relationship. The students, as members of the honor system, were the most important part. Only understanding the Coun- cil’s functions could make them proud of it. Seven elected delegates from each of the Peninsula high school, Hampton, Newport News, Ferguson, York, and Warwick, represented their respective student bodies in the 1962-63 Peninsula Student Co-operative Association. Their meetings throughout the year per- mitted an exchange of ideas and promoted under- standing and co-operation among the schools. Exchange Days held at Ferguson and Warwick provided for the observance of classes and activities in the member schools. During 1962-63 the Federation adopted as one of its projects the re-flooring of two rooms in the Hilton Speech and Hearing Clinic. All the schools contributed to this. A Leadership Training Workshop was sponsored in the spring to promote better leadership for the follow- ing year. The Federation also sponsored four special weeks which were observed in each school. They included “Know Your Federation,” “Brotherhood,” “Scholarship,” and “Americanism.” Jimmie Collie, Cheryl Ballard, Arthur Reilly, Peggy Winall, Joey Winn, Roberta Ramsey, Merrill Curtis, Margie Gillespie, Rob Mentzer, Conway Smith, and Bill Cunningham. 119 Homecoming Committee Pep Committee r oV y w B 1 r c- 9 I ' l.J - ) V t ' Jr t ■ The Warwick Staff The Warwick Staff worked twelve months a year so that the students of Warwick High would have a good year- book. Mrs. Carolyn H. Sanders was the faculty advisor. She supervised all staff activities and gave advice when needed. The Editor-in-Chief was Edna Kegley. Her job was to see that all the work on the annual ran smoothly and efficiently. Ann Robinson was the Picture Editor in charge of all photography for the annual and the identification of the photo- graphs. Merrill Curtis was Copy Editor who assigned, edited and prepared the copy for publication. Leslie Deyong was the Business Manager. She took care of all the financial and ordinary business correspondence. Mary Fran- ces Hancock, Advertising Editor, dis- tributed lists of prospective advertisers to staff members and arranged the advertisement section of the annual. The Warwick staff also had five jun- iors who served as assistants or appren- tices to the seniors. They were Peggy Winall, Dana Lou Whitehead, Noel Walsh, Ann Rollings and Sue Nelson. The Plough Staff The Plough, under a new sponsor Mrs. Carolyn Sim- mons, concluded its seventh year of publication. With the students’ contributions of interesting material, the first edi- tion came out early in December. As is the usual custom, the three issues (of the year) were dedicated. This year Miss Barbara Ann Cooley, Physical Education teacher was recipient of this honor. In the spring of 1962, The Plough won a first place award at Southern Interscholastic Press Association held in Lexington, Virginia at Washington and Lee University. The magazine was commended for its outstanding area literature and art and its appeal to any age group. The Advanced Composition class which edits the mag- azine is composed of juniors and seniors who have been recommended by their English teachers. This staff is one of the few that is elected by the students of the class. They spend much time reading, selecting, proofreading, and pro- ducing the finished product for the student body. Through the processing of the first issue the staff and sponsor learned much of the magazine procedures, and by the last issue they had become very proficent. Working objectively, they composed a magazine with “Quality rather than Quantity” as motto. The Plough issues have been concise and com- pact. Besides many new staff members, the staff also added a new sponsor, Miss Connie Catter- ton. The staff set up many new systems, with the assist- ance of their sponsor. These practices enabled them to operate more efficiently and cover all angles of the news from athletics to scholarship. The paper attempted to cover all phases of student life through its news stor- ies, features and editorials. Enthusiasm among the stu- dent body ran high, and this interest was the result of stories pertaining to the students themselves. The paper, which is published every two weeks, is usually six pages. Special editions during the year in- cluded the Christmas feature of an additional two pages, the journalism class edition in March, and during the second semester, the junior staff published an issue. The senior edition, printed in the class colors, was the Earle’s grand finale for the year, the largest paper published by the staff. During the fall, the band practiced hard to present colorful half-time shows at the football games such as “A British Tatoo” and “Brigadoon.” This award winning band participated in the New- port News Christmas Parade for the first, receiving first place. For the second consecutive year they also won first place in the Williamsburg Christmas Parade. All the concerts presented by the band proved to be most entertaining to the large audiences. The Christmas Concert featured “Christmas Festival,” “Ballet Egyp- tian” and “Sleigh Ride.” Tschaikowsky’s “1812 Over- ture” was the high light of the Winter Concert. Out- standing in the Spring Concert were “Fingal’s Cave Overture” and “Capriccio Italien.” The last concert of the year, held at the Mariner’s Museum, honored the senior members of the band. Talent was obvious when twenty-eight Grenadiers performed in the Reginal and Workshop Bands in Wil- liamsburg. Probably the most memorable event of the year was the trip to Winchester for the Annual Apple Blos- som Festival. Here the band was greatly admired. The band members made their last appearance at the graduation exercises, concluding a year which brought many honors to Warwick High School. With the pres- entation of its annual fall and spring con- certs it has had a year filled with activities, topped with its hosting the District VII Re- gional Chorus, composed of students from area high schools. Caroling in the halls at Christmas and the Christmas assembly with candlelight processional were among the highlights of the years. With such selections as “The Road Not Taken” and “This Old Hammer,” the choir performed at both school and civic events and upheld the traditions so skillfully set in the past. The Male Chorus started with only ten members, but by having rehearsals before school the membership grew to twenty. They have appeared in the Winter and Christmas concerts and in two assemblies. Among the outside pe rformances they appeared for the Zi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and on WVEC television. From Male Chorus eleven members have been selected for All State Chorus. The boys in the chorus have worked hard to establish themselves this year. They are looking forward to a bigger and better year next year. The new Male Chorus. Wouldn’t you know the one good bass is a girl. A quiet place to study is appreciated by students. The library assistants at Warwick High School were busy in the library during the 1962-63 year. Their duties included writing up fine slips which informed students of their charge on overdue books, checking out books to stu- dents, seeing that books were placed properly on the shelves and distributing library cards. The library assistants were also responsible for the decorative bulletin boards which appeared in the library throughout the year. These colorful arrangements were presented for each holiday. An amusing bulletin board, presented in January, displayed articles left by students which were found in books. These efficient assistants helped make the library a pleasant place to study. Homecoming 1962-63 Homecoming 1962-63 began weeks before the actual crowning and Homecoming activities. Plans for the pep rally, assembly, halftime activities, and the dance were formulated, by Mike Mears and Mary Laughlin, co-chair- men, and their committee. Mrs. Conway and Mrs. Waters were the sponsors of this committee. All students had a chance to participate in Homecom- ing, not only through the committee, but by buying the yel- low chrysanthemums to wear to the game and dance. The Homecoming assembly, an original script, was a take-off on experiences at past Homecomings. At this time, the 1962-63 Warwick Homecoming court was presented for the first time. Tradition was broken the night of the game because, for the first time in a few years, it did not rain. However, at the peak of excitement, the moment of crowning, the microphone failed to work. This made little difference, for the newly crowned queen was too excited to say anything. Homecoming 1962-63 was a very sucessful one for Warwick High due to the efforts of many hard-working and enthusiastic people. It is the big homecoming game! The A.F.S. also sends qualifying American students a- broad. This year the student body has gained an insight to the life, thoughts and dreams of the Brazilian people through Aurea Jorge the exchange student. Returning to Brazil, Aurea will carry international goodwill with her. Raising money to finance this program required hard work, but the budget was surpassed. A dance to acquaint War- wick with the foreign exchange student, a student-faculty bas- ketball game, correspondence with students in other countries, Twerp Week, an assembly and the formulation of a club con- stitution were some of the club’s varied activities. National Honor Society In the fall of 1961, a charter was granted to War- wick High School for the establishment of a chapter of the National Honor Society. The Society is composed of junior and senior students with an over-all B average. These were tapped in a special assembly. Since 1961 the chapter had been working hard to raise the standards of the school. The projects which had been undertaken include the creation and maintainance of an honor roll for students who meet certain require- ments scholastically. The chapter also hoped that in the future it would be able to purchase stoles to wear in the graduation service in recognition of NHS members. It is composed of boys from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes who are out- standing in scholarship, leadership, and character. The year 1962-63 was an extremely busy one for the Key Club. The work began in September when the club distributed text books to the classes. During the year the club played chimes in the cafeteria at lunch for a period of silent meditation and maintained a “lost and found” department in the school office. Also many services were performed for charity organizations. The major event of the year was the presentation of a scholarship to a wor- thy senior. For fund raising projects the club held several dan- ces, sold pennants and programs at football games, col- lected newspapers, and sponsored “Slave Week” at which time the members sold their services to the girls of the school. The club’s social events included a hayride, a Christ- mas banquet, a father and son banquet, and a party after the Senior Prom. Hard work and good times combined to make the year an eventful one for the Key Club. 145 The Quill and Scroll Officers are Fred Johnson, Vice-President; Merrill Curtis, President ; and Edna Lee Kegley, Secretary. The Ruby Altizer Roberts Chapter of Quill and Scroll, under the direction of Miss Connie Catterton, faculty spon- sor and Merrill Curtis, president, has worked hard to make this a successful year. The Quill and Scroll sj)onsored many projects. The weekly radio program, “We, The Young People”, over sta- tion W.G.H., brought before the public controversial topics of general interest. The annual banquet at S.I.P.A. was pre- sented by this chapter, portraying the past and future of journalism. A heljnng hand was extended to the journalists at Ferguson High School aiding them in preparing for a chapter in their school. The efforts of the Quill and Scroll have been directed in maintaining the traditional high standards. All persons capable of meeting the requirements were inducted and under his guidance the group developed into a successful dramatic club. For the past two years they have taken first place ratings in both local andstate festivals. During the fall of 1962, under the direction of Mrs. Rector, the Thes- pians presented the dramatic court-room tale “Twelve Angry Women,” in which Aurea Jorge, this year’s American Field Service student, participated. In February, three one-act plays “Sorry, Wrong Number,” “Cornin’ Round the Mountain,” and “Goodnight, Caroline,” directed by several members, were presented for the enjoyment of all. “Bells On Their Toes,” the sequel to a past spring performance, “Cheaper By The Dozen,” was presented in April. In keeping with custom, Warwick again entered the dramatic competi- tion and lived up to its past achievements. Fifteen of these could be found in each of the weekly assembly programs, and a smaller number of six ushers were on duty for all the plays, concerts and P.T.A. meetings. Last spring, the faculty advisor and the senior ushers selected the ushers for the coming year. To qualify for this position, students had to present above average grades, write a paper as to why they would like to become an usher, and be recommended by two teachers. A good appearance, tact and friendliness were also important factors in the final decision. It was with a great deal of pride and plea- sure that these ushers served the school. Because of her leadership and outgoing personality, she was elected to represent the school in the S.C.A. Peninsula Federation; at the District Convention, and at Girls’ State. The Girls ' Recreation Association has claimed many of Roberta’s after school hours as she participated in fencing, track, and basketball. Roberta has shown her qualities of leadership and intelligence as she capably fulfilled the positions of vice-president of the senior class, feature editor of the Plough, co-chairman of “We the Young People,” a weekly radio program sponsored by the Quill and Scroll, co-chairman of the Prom band committee, and French Club president. Whatever job Roberta has been given, small or large, she has worked with enthusiasm, being an inspiration to those around her. After graduation, she plans to attend William and Mary College where she will continue to be an asset to her school. Senior Charles Edward Kearney Morris is probably best known to his fel- low students for his wit and originality which have earned him the title of “Most Original,” and such responsibilities as chairman of S.C.A. pro- jects committee and master of ceremonies for the S.C.A. Talent Show. While these activities illustrate the most obvious aspect of Charles’ personality, he has achieved excellence and recognition in many other endeavors. He was awarded a Letter of Commendation for his score on the National Merit Scholarship Examination. To fulfill his interest in creative writing he has served as a member of the Plough Staff and this year was chosen for membership in the Quill and Scroll. He also won this year’s “Voice of Democracy” essay contest in this school. Charles’ most serious interest is in the field of science. Having en- gaged in scientific studies and projects in high school where he has served as president of the Science Club, Charles plans to attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he will undertake aerospace research or design engineering. Warwick will truly miss this talented and versatile student. Marjorie Tower Gillespie has been an outstanding member of the Class of ’63 all during her high school life. Her leadership ability has been evident through the trust her classmates have placed in her as a class officer and then as an S.C.A. officer. One of the most valuable ex- periences of Marjorie’s life was her attendance at Girl’s State. Athletics have been another phase in Marjorie’s varied round of activities and interests. She has been a cheerleader for four years, serving as captain during her senior year. When she was not cheering, Marjorie could be found playing basketball or tennis. In the summer, water sports have always taken up much of her time. Most of all Marjorie is a serious student, having earned recognition through membership in the National Honor Society. She has always stud- ied diligently and enjoys reading. In the future, Marjorie hopes to fur- ther her education at Mary Baldwin College, eventually specializing in psychiatry or social work. With all these interests, it is easy to under- stand why Marjorie was chosen “Best All Around”. We wish her much success in the future. 152 Conway Wilbur Smith has earned the title of Senior Leader by his active participation in all phases of school life. Because of his wide in- terests and abilities, he was chosen “Best All Around” boy in the senior class. Since entering Warwick High School, Conway has been active in the S.C.A. He has served as second vice-president, student body repre- sen tive at the Peninsula Federation, district convention, state convention and Boys’ State. The final tribute to Conway’s ability and popularity was his election as president of the S.C.A. In athletics, Conway was well-known. Again he demonstrated his skill and leadership by serving as co-captain of the basketball team for two years. He was also a member of the track team for three years. Scholastically, Conway has always maintained a strong record. His average qualified him for membership in the National Honor Society. Next year he plans to study dentistry at Randolph-Macon College. We are sure that success will follow him there. Leaders Ruth Merrill Curtis was a leader in her classes before she became a Senior Leader in the class of ’63. In the spring of ’62 she represented Warwick at Girls’ State in Rad- ford and was also a delegate to S.I.P.A. Merrill was honored by her classmates in her election as homeroom president for two years. Willing always to be of service to those around her, Merrill served as Head Usher in the S.C.A. organization. Maintaining an excellent scholastic record she has exhibited a full sense of responsibility, carrying out plans and programs in a manner that all students might well imitate. She served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Senior Class, as a delegate to the Peninsula S.C.A. Federation and as a Prom Committee chairman. As President of Quill and Scroll, Merrill contributed much in in- creasing the scope and influence of that organization. Skilled in journa- lism she served as Copy Editor of the ’63 annual. Her versatility and use of many talents in continuous achievement and service to those around her, places Merrill in the position as Senior Leader, and promises that she will always excel. Delmas Wise Moore, who was chosen “Most Likely to Succeed” by the class of ’63 is a logical choice for the title Senior Leader. A member of the National Honor Society and recipient of a Letter of commendation from the Merit Scholarship testing program, he has maintained an A average all through high school. In recognition of outstanding character and citizenship, he was awarded the American Legion Citizenship Award in the ninth grade and was elected to the Executive Honor Council in the eleventh grade. Delmas was chosen to represent Warwick as a delegate to the Chesapeake District Convention in 1962 and attended the Key Club In- ternational Convention the summer of his junior year. He has served on many class and S.C.A. committees. Knowing the efficiency with which he works, his classmates have given him positions of leadership as Span- ish club president, French club president, A.F.S. vice-president, and sen- ior class president. In addition Delmas also possesses a talent for music. He has studied piano for twelve years and was a member of All-State Band for three years. With all these assets, Delmas will surely have a successful future. 153 f Senior Statistics GEORGE WOODROW ADKINS: D.E. Club, 12. CAROL AKERS: Mixed Chorus, 11; Girls’ Chorus, 12.
