President These are the leaders The Student C0-operative Association of 1958-1959, under the leadership of a very capable President, Jimmy Maxwell, has worked hard, striving to please the faculty and students of Warwick High School. The S.C.A. Executive Council, the Congress, and the committees have worked efficiently, to fulfill their goals. The religious life of Warwick High School was strengthened when the S.C.A. Chapel was opened for the benefit of the students, Beth Holland, the S.C.A. Chaplain, worked vigorously to make such an opportunity possible. Committees worked together, making tape recorded music in the cafeteria, a strengthened assembly program, colorful posters, a stu- dent cheering section, and morning activities possible. The magazine sales were boosted this year when the Seniors were the top-selling class. The Pep Committee and the Social Committee, which were highly attended, came up with new ideas to better the school spirit and social life of Warwick High School. The voting members of Congress were enlarged when class officers were included as voting members. Plans were made to improve the S.C.A. room, making it more dignified and pleasant to work in. As the S.C.A. continued to improve and conquered its year's goals, a feeling of appreciation and fellowship was hoped to be developed among the students of Warwick High School. Honor is a very important phase of the life at Warwick High School. Through the work of ten appointed mem- bers and their various projects, the Honor Council strives to promote and secure honor. Some of its activities are to distribute honor cards, have an Honor Week during January, and give an assembly. This gives a deeper mean- ing to the student life and student activities S. C.A. CONGRESS The Congress of the Warwick High School Student Cooperative Association consists of Federation officers and homeroom representatives. Its function is to activate the will of the students. Since the Congress operates on a parliamentary basis, each member has the privilege of introducing matters to Congress. This year each ,home- room has a specific seat in the auditorium. Our goal is to have someone from every homeroom present at all the meetings. 1stRow: Emily Parker, Pat Cox, Nancy Price, Susan Brow-n, Nancy Blaylock, Bonnie Hill, Nae Rae Marion, Joanne Robertson, Linda Hudgens, Eleanor Hartman, Robbie Nelson, Pat Foutz, Joanne Denton, Jerry Flowers, Mary Jane McGrath. 2nd Row: Cathy Watts, Har- riett Petty, Angie Newman, Janice Brown, Karin Nelson, Irma Ireland, Sandra Shawen, Nancy Keeter, Patsy Womble, Donna Hudgins, Bobbi Sherman, Marie Morris, Joyce House, Jean Gregory, Lani Dobson, Becky Taylor, Beth Holland. 3rd Row: Jim Maxwell, Bobby Hopkins, Billy Hudgins, John Morrisette, Jimmy Smith, Richard Epes, Jerry Franklin, Tommy Cheek, Bill Harrison. 4th Row: Jack Gibson, Jimmy Miles, Jan Cray, Tommy Williams, Wyatt Mapp, Jay Lambiotte, Dan Adams. The Mag Shag, our Magazine Sales dance, was initiated this year to the delight of all the students. This year the sales broke all school records by topping the 36,000 mark. The success may be attributed to the cooperation and spirit of the student body. We, the Social Committee, would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to our sponsor, Mr. Barclay Sheaks, and our advisor, Mrs. Sarah Geddy, for their interest, support, and patience throughout the year. We are especially grateful to you, the students, for making the year 1958-1959 such a great success. Charlotte Leftwich, Bobby Scarborough, Charlotte Savage, Marilyn Mclntire, ,Iim Tankard. LEADERSHIP TRAINING COMMITTEE One reason for Warwick's excellent S.C.A. is because of its leaders in the past years. We are fortunate at Warwick to have a committee which promotes leadership training. Its job is to inform students on parliamentary procedure and on the S.C.A. For success in school one needs the qualities of a leader. L-vb-e...t. 1 PEP COMMITTEE The Pep Committee has mainly promoted school spirit at Warwick High School this year. Decorating the goal posts in rain or shine, presenting half-time skits at home football games, making posters publicizing sport events at Warwick, and laying the ground-work for a student card and cheering section were the main functions of the Pep Committee this past year. A committee, the Sportsmanship Committee, suggested by the Peninsula Federation of Senior High Schools was aided by the Pep Committee to encourage and promote sportsmanship in all phases of school life. The members of the Pep Committee have indeed showed school spirit in the work they have done, and they have set an example of school spirit for the student body. The sponsor for the Pep Committee is Mr. Warren Chauncy. He has given the committee good suggestions and good advice. We wish to thank him for his help and advice. Their accomplishments were many. On the first day, information booths are placed at various spots throughout the buildings. They help students find their classes and supply other informa- tion needed. Committee members are in charge of these booths. When new students came to Warwick during the year, committee members showed them around the school, the location of their classes, and tried to help the students adjust to Warwick. Aided by the sayings of Confucious, the Temple Room created an oriental atmosphere. The Sweet Cakes Derby, well accepted by the students, helped with cleanliness and discouraged wastefulness. The Thanksgiving and Christmas bulletin boards at- tractively celebrated the holidays. The Cafeteria Committee enjoyed acting as host by preparing and serving refreshments to the visiting S.C.A. PLO GH STAFF The Plough staff has worked tirelessly this year to present a better literary magazine to the student body. They reached out and experimented with new ideas which resulted in favorable comments. The magazine staff went on an all out campaign to publicize their attractive little book. In an effort to win honors from the critics, the book was changed in size and, in relation to its size, the art work and articles became more selective and compact. With the undying cooperation of her twenty-three member staff and the help of the English Department, the Editor, Garnette Hobbs, was able to publish three issues. They deserve the compliments which have been given them this year. lst Row: Garnette Hobbs, Linda Hud- gins and Page Brinkley review material for The Plough. Ellen Busick, Assistant Editor, and Beth Holland, Editor, pause for a moment from their conference with Mrs. Roberts to smile for the photographer. Yikesl What were those white flashes speeding through Warwick halls, Earles being delivered, of course. As usual the staff members were rushing frantically to the home rooms to make sure that each Activity Ticket holder heard Warwick High's 4'voice . That voice sounded strongly through the halls eigh- teen times this year. But its volume was composed only through hard work during the long hours before and after school, Saturdays, even lunch periods, and of course, during Staff Nis official business hour, second period. Special issues appeared for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other celebrated occasions. Nothing could have symbolized The Earle staff better than the temperamental vari-typers which required con- stant attention from these former journalism students of Mrs. Roberts. Endless hours of gluing articles on the make-up sheets under the headlines set by the staff mem- bers themselves caused many a stiff back, but the stu- dents praise made every moment worthwhile to the staff members. Soliciting ads to help pay for this uvoicei' was no light task, but is was a necessary one, and each staff member tackled it vigorously. Thus it happened that fifteen workers proudly produced the voice of the students of Warwick High School. Coach Romie Hamiltonis Farmers compiled a respec- table 7-3 record and landed three players-halfback Johnny Morrisette, tackle Gene Jordon, and Paul Shaver on the All-Peninsula team. The sports' writers selected to the All-State team: Johnny lVIo1'risette, second team, Gene Jordan, third team and Stamm Rauch, honorable mention. Warwick played its best defensive game of the season in beating Wakefield, 13-0, allowing only one first down. The Farmers trounced highly regarded Thomas Jefferson, 33-6, in probably their best all-around performance of 1958. But the sweetest victory for the Farmers was the one- sided romp over Newport News, which was played at Warwick for the first time since the rivalry began. Another fine team effort was against Princess Anne. Leading by only 13-6 at halftime, the Farmers turned on the scoring steam in the last half for an impressive 4-1-6 triumph. fa!! in line - Other victims were Gloucester, 45-Og Great Bridge, 19-T, and Maury, 24-Ox Warwick's three losses came at the hands of unbeaten Norview, 38-0, Hampton. 13-6, and Woodrow Wilson, 27-63 the latter game climaxed a three-year Thanks- giving Day series. Among the many departing seniors on the 1958 squad were: Morrisette, Shaver, Shorter, Enos, Rauch, Ellis, Schuster, Register, Evans. and Parker. Others we will miss next year are: Perry. Mays, Warren, Dickinson, Ellis, Williams, and Stanifer. The students were very proud of their football team this year. The boys really gave us many thrilling games for which to cheer. Coached by Mr. Formichelli, they marched unbeaten to their second straight Eastern District and State championships. In completely dominating the dis- trict golf scene, Warwick ran their undefeated string of dual match victories to twenty-one. Exhibiting some of the strongest team balance in high school golf circles, they won the state championship. The season was climaxed with four linksters averaging less than 80 strokes per 13 holes. The team totaled 633 strokes better than second place, which was the host team from Danville Cowardin was second best individual scorer and Gerringer, last year's winner, was fifth. At the Eastern District Tournament in Portsmouth, the quartet of Cerringer, Cowardin, Humphries, and Hyle posted a 614 total. They outdistanced second place Granby by 30 strokes. Cerringer retained his crown by nipping team mate Cowardin in a sudden death, extra hole, play-off. Others taking part in a number of matches during the year were Lanier and Liebler. Playing their last match for Warwick were seniors Cowardin, Hyle, Lanier, and junior, Humphreys. TENNI After five losing seasons, Warwick High's New Look tennis team finally regained its lost prestige. We call this our New Look team because of the new up-an-coming players. Since only senior letterman, Bill Gillespie, is graduating, the future looks bright. Seven lettermen, one junior, five sopho- mores, and one freshman made up the team. These eight players, with the help of four others, compiled a 5-5 won-loss record. However, two of their losses came at the hands of the powerful William and Mary Freshmen and- Norfolk Academy. In the Eastern District the team finished with a 5-3 won- loss record, losing only to Granby, Maury, and Suffolk. Suffolk was the eventual State Champ. The record was good enough for a tie for third place in the district, but, due to a Hip of the coin and the demands of time, they did not par- ticipate in the District Tournament. With such an unexpected fine showing this year, Coach Warren Chauncey predicts better teams in the coming years. A ' Q , ' , - i ' f' ' N, .. .,. Qwutg r l to ie . VA RSITT BASEBALL The 1959 Warwick baseball team, hampered by an early- season tendency to perform erractically, completed the season with a five-game winning streak, which gave it a share of second place in the Eastern District. Wilson, which edged past the Free Staters early in April, 44-3, topped the 12-team league with only one defeat. Warwick and Hampton had eight wins and three losses. Both tied with Newport News to put the Peninsula race in a three-way dead- lock. All three clubs had 2-2 records in the unofficial race. Over all, Warwick posted an 11-5 record. The Stater,s late-season winning combination.was a blend of seniors and juniors, led by first baseman and captain, Wayne Register. Leading the underclass aggregation were Royce Bowden, who hit .344-, stole 10 bases, and scored 16 runs, and Mike Bahr, southpaw pitcher and outfielder who won three and lost two, struck out 69 in 53 innings, and turned in a batting average of 348, the teamis highest. Register, who hit .296, Bowden and Bahr were unanimous choices on the All-Peninsula Team, while ,lay Lambiotte and Neil Bleakley received mention on the All Star-Team. Returning for a final season next year along with Lambiotte, Bowden, Bahr and Bleakley will be second baseman Jerry Franklin and pitchers Lacy Epperson and Sam Jenkins, soph- omores, Jerry Hall and Melvin Renng and freshman pitcher Larry Gammon. Shrieves: Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Mr. T. Ryland Sanford, Jr., Assistant Superintendent for Business and Financeg and Mr. George Mclntosh, Jr., Director of Personnel and Assistant to the Superintendent. Under the direction of these men, the school system is smoothly and efiiciently run. There are some personalities with whom we are all keeping the school business in order. familiar. They are Mr. George W. Cox, Jr., Principalg Mr. Clarence A. tPopJ Davis and Mr. Malcolm P. Mc- Connell, Assistant Principals. These three men are respon- sible for running our school and giving helpful advice to teachers and students alike. They iare always working for the betterment of Warwick High. We owe much gratitude and praise to these men for their untiring effort. Although our school this year has been under a new public school system, there have been few changes. The exam schedule was the most noticeable one to the stu- dents. Through these changes, however, W.H.S. has en- joyed the pleasant efforts of having a well-chosen and sincere administration. L. to R. The primary objective of the Parent-Teachers Association is to promote the welfare of children and youth in the home, school, church, and community. This is accomplished in many ways. One of the most effective ways is for PTA members to support efforts to secure adequate laws for the card and protection of children and youth. If this support is to be intelligent and effective, members must be kept informed on needed and proposed legislation. The organization must convey directly to the local, state, and federal legislators their position on legislative itemsg consequently, one of the objectives of the legislative chairman is to keep the membership informed on legislation proposed by The Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers. A two-year program, in which each department of the school has been featured at a meeting, has recently been completed. The asso- ciation is continuing projects that have been in process for several years: they they make concession stands at the football games available, the parents serve as chaperones at dances and recreation nights, and two 35150 scholarships are presented to worthy graduates who anticipate entering the teaching profession. 55 Nita Gills and .lean Williams stand on their heads t please the PTA. and Dea'z'catea' Teachers- SCIENCE F UREI GN LANGUAGE CHECK THESE s EVERY DAY 2 lst row: Miss Helen Theophilos. Morse Hurrah! At last we are Sophomores at Warwick High School! On the first day of school, we were filled with excite- ment and were rather confused as we wandered around in the large and strange halls, which were filled with the friendly faces of the upperclassmen. After a week or so, we felt at home and began to take part in many of the school activities. We found ourselves taking part in plays and assemblies and contributing our ideas to the committees on which we served. Our class supplied several boys for the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. Eight of our peppiest girls were chosen to be cheerleaders. A difference was noticed on the scholastic side of our school work. While some of us dug into algebra and biology, others racked their brains with foreign languages. Although we are eagerly anticipating our junior year, we know we shall never forget our sophomore fun. We thank the teachers and student body for making us feel welcome at Warwick High School and for making our Sophomore year a memorable one. We were at last juniors with all the long anticipated privileges and responsibilities. It was just as wonderful as we had planned. As juniors We felt the necessity of making plans for the future, so the College Day early in our year was a helpful guide. Juniors were active in all phases of school life. Having members of our class in Congress and on S.C.A. com- mittees, we played a large part in our school government. Our members served on the stalls of The Earle, The Warwick, and The Plough. We, spurred on by the junior cheerleaders, enthusi- astically supported the junior boys who performed out- standingly on the teams for various sports. The day our class rings arrived was a very special one for all of us. ln the spring we held class meetings to plan a Prom that we wanted to he a memorable night for each senior. Our jear as juniors passed all too quickly, hut it gave us full measure in learning and social experience. We were sent happily to our senior year. class took full ad- vantage of S'Be kind to Seniors Day which the juniors gave to honor the- upperclassnu-n. Becky Taylor, Parliamentariang lrma Ire-land. MMF' Despo and her committee discuss plans for the Senior Assembly. SENIOR OFFICERS The glory of our senior year dawned slowly upon us with the full realization of our responsibilities and the example we must set. After many years of waiting, we had finally achieved our honored position, and we were dismayed at the wonder of what the year would bring. But, we soon found ourselves too busy to be ' frightened by the weight of our deeds, for we had class symbols to choose, pictures to take, and the Banquet and Assembly to plan. We became close- ly bound in ties of friendship, and our class began to function as a unit. The days and weeks passed all too quickly, and, with the Heeting hours, our last mo- ments at Warwick High School drew to a close. Then, with that final handshake, we gathered up our precious memories as a class and stepped forward as individuals to meet our futures. The seniors in Mrs. Centry's government class study diligently in order to receive their long awaited diplomas. Sefton F. But we've gained, and weive cherished each day as it passed- We've prolited as we've led. We have waited and worked for the fruits of our labor, Which have sometimes been missed for our tears- But we realize now that our dreams lie there waiting- Those same dreams we've watched through the years. Many more voices will echo this way And tell of a memorable past. There'll be other tomorrows, not only today- Other ideas whose meanings will last. But for we who are seniors aware of the present With Future held fast in our sight, We'll remember with sadness this year going by, But with knowledge we'll gain desired height. Jenna Rollings, '59 Class colors: Lavender and White Class Hower: White Rose Class motto: It matters not how long we live, but how. Class song: You,ll Never Walk Alone. 106 SE IOR DAY The Se ' nl01' . s march mm assembl y f01' tht? last dm 6. Do you mean that we actually had to go to high school five years to get iced tea for lunch? Seniors gather in the breezeway before Senior Assembly to talk over the excitement of graduation. 107 With her friendly smile and vivacious personality, Eliza- beth ,larvis Holland well deserves the title of Senior Lead- er. During her years at Warwick, she has displayed the fine leadership and scholastic qualifications which brought her this title. Beth has actively served her class and the S.C.A. all through high school with a variety of activities. She has served on many committees, served as homeroom officer, and served in Congress. She was secretary of her Jun- ior Class. This year she has done a great job as S.C.A. Chaplain by setting up the S.C.A. Chapel. Beth has been an officer of her French Club for two years and was president of the French Inter-Club Coun- cil her senior year. She has served a.s editor of The Earle this past year and has been a member of Quill and Scroll for two years. As a delegate to the S.C.A. Federation and to the Nor- folk Portsmouth Good Neighbor Days, Beth has repre- sented her school well with her warm smile and willing- ness to co-operate. As a crowning touch to her high school career, the seniors chose Beth as the Best All Around girl in the Senior Class. Beth plans to attend Westhampton College in Rich- mond next year. We are sure that she will be as much of a success in her college career and in her life's work as she has been at Warwick. William Carter Cowardin has the spirit, co-operation, and desire to be of service to his school in any form pos- sible. His amiable attitude and ready smile have been a joy to those who have worked with him. Besides ex- celling in the academic field, Bill has made his mark in athletics, student co-operative work, The Plough, and the Key Club. It mattered not what position he held, he was always ready, willing and able to perform tasks which were assigned to him. Bill's pleasing personality is probably his most out- standing single quality. Never seeming to let his troubles get the upper hand, he is always willing to cause one's miseries to flee before his cheerfulness. Next year the cadets of Virginia Military Institute shall add to their ranks one of our leaders who will sure- ly excel in all that he undertakes. Our school can be proud of him, always. SENIOR 108 Voted '5lVIost Likely to Succeed by her class, Patricia Anne Foutz is certainly a most deserving Senior Leader. Pat's life at Warwick High School has been a very active one. She was Secretary of the Senior Class, Sec- retary of the Honor Council, and served on Congress for several years. In the literary Held Pat has been quite outstanding, having served on The Plough Staff, and hav- ing been a member of the Quill and Scroll. She was a sports leader of the Girls Recreation Association and served as chairman of both Junior and Senior Class committees. She did a splendid job as chairman of the Senior Banquet Committee. This event will be long re- membered by the Seniors as one of the highlights of the year. Pat plans to attend William and Mary College but is still undecided as to what she wants her life's work to beg however, she is leaning toward the fields of journalism and accounting. With her wonderful personality and her equally won- derful leadership and workmanship abilities, Pat prom- ises to be a success wherever she goes. Known not only for his excellent grades and abilities in the classroom, but also for his wide participation in school activities, this capable senior is indeed very de- serving of the position of leadership in his class. Tommy has played an important role in S.C.A. pro- grams through his work on the Honor Council. Through his fine leadership he has performed an excellent service to the school 'as Chairman and class representative for four years. Also active as a French Club officer and vice-president of his homeroom, and serving on many S.C.A. and class committees, Tommy has made a great contribution to Warwick High School through his enthusiasm and in- terest. Tommy will continue his education at Davidson Col- lege next year, and we know that, with his talents, he will be as successful there as he has been at Warwick. Although his familiar face will be missed in the halls of Warwick in years to come, we wish him well and we say to him: Good luck in the future, Tommy. Warwick High is very proud of you!
