Each, talented in his own field, has added a great deal of beauty and color to our school. All who have come to know them have admiration and respect for their untiriug efforts with the students. Our choices, with their individualities, well developed talents, good senses of humor, and winning ways have added so much to the enjoyment of our high school years. It is with great pleasure that we, the annual staff, dedicate the 1958 Warwick to Mr. and Mrs. Barclay Sheaks. Nlrs. E. 4 FOREWORD Way back in the days when Vlfarwick was a rural high school the student body acquired the name The Farmers. Ever since. it has clung tenaciously to its beloved pseudonym, even when others sought to abolish it. The Staff of the 1958 Warwick would like to introduce a new addition to their family. His name is Freddie the Farmer, and his likeness will he seen throughout the pages of this book as he takes you on a guided tour of the 1957-58 school year. l reddie's knowledge of school life is vast and encompassing. for he has been at Warwick since the mid-twenties. He is equally at home on the athletic field or on the Vvarwick High School stageg in S.C.A. meetings or on the cafeteria dance floor. And. of course, no class would be complete without him. Yes, he is to be found everywhere, for Freddie represents the spirit of pride-pride for our school, our administrators, our teachers and student leaders, our way of life-that will live always in the hearts and minds of Warwickis students. Because of it, pupils are able to obtain in- formation through research for reports and projects as well as books and magazines for pleasure read- ing. But where would they be with no library assistants to help them find their books and check them out? It is through the assistant librarians' work, too, that new books are ordered, arranged properly on the shelves, and attractive bulletin boards displayed. SWDHIT C'00PERv47llfE 145 067:47 ON The Warwick High School student government succeeded in accomplishing nearly all of the goals set forth by the campaign speeches of the previous year. Among these were the speakers installed in the cafeteria for music during lunch and a dance after a home basketball game. The school was well-represented in the District S.C.A. Convention at Newport News High School. The Federation, which is composed of delegates from Newport News, Hamp- ton, and Warwick High School, was under the capable leadership of a Warwick senior, Tommy Summerell. With the help of the Federation, Warwick was host to the Federation delegates for an Exchange Student Day. We were especially proud of our hard working Student Co-operative Association in 1957-58. The Congress, made up of representatives from the homerooms, and the Execu- tive Council, composed of the S.C.A. officers and class presidents, often met to plan worth- while activities in which every student was urged to participate. Mr. McConnell and a student chairman. Linda Ivins. The main objective of this com- mittee is to provide good assemblies for the students throughout the year. It assumes re- sponsibility especially for the various S.C.A. assemblies. 5'.L'.v4. Commkfees MAGAZINE SALES The magazine sales campaign in our school is conducted to help pay for our numerous activities. This campaign makes the sale of activity tickets possible. It is the duty of the magazine sales committee to impress upon the students the importance of the sale and to help conduct the sale. This year the committee decided to give the i'Campus Wolf as a prize to the highest salesman in each homeroom. Then, as is the custom. the committee planned an assembly to start the sales campaign off, The assembly showed what would happen if the magazine sales flopped. LEADERSHIP TRAINING Everyone needs to be trained in the abil- ities of a leader. Some leaders are born, but the majority are made. In order for any large group to function well, it is necessary to have good leaders. Warwick is a school whose S.C.A. provides a Leadership Training Com- mittee. This committee not only emphasizes leadership characteristics, but it also stresses the important part of parlimentary procedure in S.C.A. work. This is done through films, discussion groups, mock meetings. posters for elections. and programs presented to the Con- gress. Train yourself to be a leader and strengthen your S.C.A.', 61've Everyone - The Pep Committee has done a fine job in promoting good sportsmanship and school spirit. Composed of seventy' odd students who are interested in this phase of work, the committee has done many things which deserve recognition. The student section in the grandstand, the decorated goal posts. half time skits. and the very attractive bulletin boards throughout the buildings are all the handiwork of the Pep Committee. SAFETY The Safety' Committee for 1957-'58 was composed of approximately twelve members. lts function was to make the school safe for all students and faculty members. The committee was connected with the Safety' Patrol and worked with them on many projects. During the year, the committee spon- sored an assembly' and a Safety' Week. They also had various exhibits in the halls of the school and on the bulletin boards in the rooms. This year the committee has worked hard on various projectsg among them the trallic problem, the fire drill proce- durc and general school safety. 181 ,-I 402 1 sau ian --u if 0: L if l i lt ICCR ICATION N ICHT The committee sponsored three eve- nings of fun for the entire student body during the school year. Dancing was en- joyed hy all with music furnished by the Vvarwick dance band and records. Ping-pong, checkers, miniature pool. and cards were the popular games. A large number of students attended, and the committee feels that the year was a success. A Chance fo Parrfbjoafe - SOCIAL The Social Committee for the year 1957-1958 had for its chairman, Jean Rahn, and a committee of very conscientious workers who all helped to make the dances a success. Throughout the year there were six dances, two of these being new additions. They were the Homecoming and Inaugural Ball. We can certainly thank our kind and interested sponsor, Mr. Sheaks, for all his help, and Mrs. Ceddy for her time during the year which made all the dances a success. , fran, A- Jffll '74f.,j11w K in fi - 'sr ftmg f . r . V s. JF v -,all ACTIVITY TICKET The Activity Ticket Committee worked very hard this year putting out a new type of ticket. The committee planned the ticket and had it printed themselves. The members had the job of typing up the individual names and homeroom numbers on each ticket. Approximately 825 activity tickets have been sold. This year the selling of the tickets was done through the homerooms. This large job could not have been done half as well without the co- operation of the members of this committee. PUBLICITY The Publicity Committee is a committee that serves the other committees by making posters and other things needed by them, It is not necessary but helpful that members of this committee have an artistic or creative mind. 0ur Hard - work bg Ushers , ,--r awk, , ..., , ,,,, w ,. The committee was composed of nine members and the sponsor. Miss Patty Fardette. The co-chairman of this committee were Louanne Sellars and Carolyn Rancorn. Through a number of meetings, the committee organized Homecoming for the night of November the fifteenth. They decided that there would be two sopho- more attendantsg three junior attendantsg and four senior attendants, one of whom would be chosen by the football team to be Homecoming Queen for 1957-58. The girls wore dark suits and carried bouquets of yellow chrysanthemums. The queen, Anne Wil- son, carried a dozen red roses. Nine cars were borrowed from various patrons to be used at the half-time ceremonies. One girl and her escort were in each car. To begin the ceremony, the band gave a very good performance and formed a WU with the help of the cheerleaders, Then each member of the Homecoming Court took her place in the appointed car. The girls representing the sophomore class led the procession, followed by the juniors and last, the seniors. The girls and their escorts were cheered as they took their places on the field. Then the queen rode out and completed the form of a VH, While on the platform, she was crowned Queen of our Home- coming for the year 1957-58 by Coach Romie Ham- ilton. After the singing of the Alma Mater, the queen and her court left the field, followed by the attendants. Mary ,lane fNlcCrath. Anne Wilson. Warwick Highis 1957-58 basketball team had to overcome an old nem- esis-inexperience-under new Coach 'Wilbur Thompson, but the Farmers matured quickly enough to win 13 of 20 games and finish Hfth in the 12- team Eastern District race. Nevertheless, it was a successful season. The Farmers poured in a total of 1,137 points, believed to be a new school record, and averaged 56.9 points per game. In addition, Warwick had a fine 48.5 defensive average, third best in the district. Co-Captain Buddy Olney and Curt Edwards were the most consistent scorers, averaging 15.1 and 13.0 points, respectively. The other three reg- ulars were Co-Captain Bart Partch, Val Hopkins, and .lay Lambiotte, a sophomore and the only returnee next season. One of the season's highlights was the 50-48, last-minute thriller which the Farmers dropped to State Champion Newport News. Warwick's most outstanding over-all performance came late in the season when the Far- mers upset strong Norview, 64-60, in the final minute of play after the lead had changed hands 15 times. Their un- dying pep and vitality were an inspiration to all. ln the maroon and white uniforms topped off by the maroon and gold letters, the girls presented a very pleasing picture. To arouse our school spirit, pep rallies and as- semblies were presented with unequaled vigor. The excitement and enthusiasm at these rallies and as- semblies was contagious, and soon everyone was thrilled and anxious for the coming game. When you heard them cheering, you could be sure that the cheers were coming straight from their hearts. Their pleasing smiles and cheerful attitudes were the little spice needed at the games to make them something special to remember. Without these nine constant reminders that We're proud of our school, our games would have lacked the color and inspiration of organized cheering. Warwickis long frustrated Farmers ended a four-year stay in the luastern Districtis second place with a steady array of hitting that lifted them into the 1958 baseball championship. Although our way' of life is always changing. these changes either take place so quickly or so gradually that they pass without our noticing them. As seniors. a most important change is taking place-7 we are being carried almost magically' through the door to our fu- ture. it is hard not to regret leaving the most wonderful days of our lives, but these days can always be reliyed in our memories. It seemed just like yesterday when we awoke as eighth graders. At times we were apt to be a little starry-eyed or too sure of our- selves, but at the same time we were preparing ourselves for our senior year. Our eighth and ninth grade years slipped by quickly, and our sophomore year without our realizing it. Then came the first thrill of being upperclassmen. How proud we felt, and at that time no task of responsibility seemed too great for us to take care of, and tackle vigorously. The days passed swiftly, and finally the time came when we-yes, the rats of yesterday--were seniors. Deep down inside, it felt just like another school year, but week after week the senior homerooms became the dwelling place of nobility. But much to everyone's sur- prise, we continued to be just plain students. We were proud of all our contributions to the sports world, the dances, and of all our leaders in our student government. Yes, we indeed had something to be proud of! The dreaded final exams, which we thought would never come, and all of the wonderful graduation activities filled our last days in Warwick. Since the day this lad entered Warwick High School, he has vigorously participated in every activity conceivable. Charles, quickly learning to accept responsibility, led his class for three years as president, he served on the Honor Council, Usher Board and was a delegate to the Tri-City S.C.A. Federation. Now, this his senior year, he has led us through thick and thin as S.C.A. President, and has done a tremendous job in accomplishing most of the aims set forth in his platform. Some of these accomplishments included the instal- lation of speakers in the cafeteria and creating wider participation on the S.C.A. committees. A magnetic smile and a warm personality have been the outstand- ing trademarks of this senior. Very deserving of a Senior Leader, Charlie plans to attend Hamp- den-Sydney College in the fall where he will study in the field of medicine. Warwick High School will never forget you, Charlie, and you will always remain a part of its halls forever. Virginia Anne Wilson, a well-liked Senior Leader, is known through the halls of Warwick by her sweet smile and friendly dis- position. Anne has participated in many of the activities during her high school career. She has been a representative on the 'Honor Council, a homeroom officer, and member of the S.C.A. Congress as well as S.C.A. and class committees, She also served as usher during her senior year. Chosen by her classmates as one of the '6Best Looking girls at Warwick, Anne was also on the Homecoming Court and chosen by the football team to be Queen of the Court. As the delegate from Warwick, she was a princess in the Court of the International Azalea Festival. Anne will enter Wake Forest College in the fall to further her education, We know she will continue to excel in all she does. Anne, we wish you all the success possible! You will long be remembered by all who have known you, especially by your friends of the Class of '58! 98 Virginia Anne Wilson ZMDER Jean Louise Rahn, with her sparkling personality and warm friendly smile, is a very deserving Senior Leader. Jean has the perfect combination of a spirit of co-operation and willingness to work which can easily be seen from the fine jobs she has carried out in her years at Warwick High. She began serving on the Social Committee in her sophomore year, and became a very capable and active chairman in her senior year. She began to take an active part in the S.C.A. also in her sophomore year by representing her homeroom in the S.C.A. Con- gress. Jean proved her capability of leadership in her junior year by acting as chairman of the Loyalty Committee and of a Prom Com- mittee, In her senior year, as a delegate to the S.C.A. Federation and the Youth Forum, and as Senior Class Secretary and Committee Chairman, she served her school well. As a climax to her senior year, Jean was chosen Most Popularv girl in the class. Longwood, where Jean will probably major in some type of social work, will profit by gaining such a capable and enthusiastic girl as she is. We wish you, Jean, all the happiness your big, warm heart can hold. he believes. deavors.
