1986 ZOACRCRIACD WARWICK SENIOR HIGH LITITZ, PA VOLUME 30 , , On behalf of the administration and faculty at War- wick High School, l congratulate the yearbook staff for their many hours of hard work in producing this year's yearbook. ln my years of working in the position of high school principal, l have watched the yearbook go through many changes to provide students of Warwick High School with a publication which truly reflects the highlights of a given school year. Years from now cur- rent students at Warwick High School will have an op- portunity to look through the Warrian and remember the many facets of life at Warwick High School. The Warrian truly captures the picture of people working together, learning, and enjoying their high school years. Congratulations on a job well done. Mr. Stephen A. lovino Principal Be all that you can be. Many of us have heard these words repeatedly the past several years. ln fact, often times because they are so familiar, we take them for granted. Being the best takes a conscious individual effort at all times. l hope that each graduating senior has made that effort and is ready for the future that awaits him or her, For each of you, l wish success and happi- ness. Underclassmen, l challenge you to make a commit- ment to yourself and your school. Be the best you can be, and in return, your school will be the best it can be. Congratulations to members of the Warrian staff. l'm sure the entire Warwick community appreciates your dedication and hard work in producing an excellent pub- lication. Stephen T. JITNES 5 D Y T THE MOVIES 1 E673 EWR? 'IHIIOME he l985 Homecoming Parade of floats was fascinating. All the classes worked hard and put a lot of effort into their floats. The freshmen brought the Bears bad news fthat our hits would knock 'em homey. The sophomores wished to witness the murder of E-Town. The Bear Busters were brought in by the juniors to exterminate the Bears. The seniors brought Rocky back into the ring to beat up on a famous bear. Bear Busters , the Junior float, came in fourth place. Bad News Bears , the Freshman float. came in third place. Rocky , the Senior float, came in second place. and Witness , the sophomore float, came in first place. After all, we did witness the Bears' murder, and it was a wonderful day to place in War- wick history. RRIANS CELEBR TE VIC t was homecoming on Grosh Field and the old grads had the opportunity to witness the War- riors in one of their better performances. The win broke a four game losing streak. The fine showing offense came alive at the right time. Cool and crisp was the setting for the homecoming football game between the Mighty Warriors and the E-Town Bears. Warwick school spirit was ev- erywhere. Streamers and balloons with screaming fans set the perfect atmosphere for this football game. Get ready, because the game is about to begin. Here come the Mighty Warriors! Neither team did anything with the ball on their first time of possession. However, on the Warriors second series, they put on a sixty-five yard march that ended in the endzone. The Warriors scored with fifty-nine seconds remaining in the first peri- od. Here the Bears fought back, with the Warriors at fault, a play consisting of an eightyfone yard run for a touchdown was achieved by an E-Town play- er. The last ninety seconds of the first half saw the lead of hands change twice. To Warwick's sur- prise, an alert Bear scooped up the ball after a biocked punt and dashed for thirty yards, giving E- Town their second score. The Warriors put on one of their best drives of the year on their first possession in the second half. They took over on their own fifteen and in eleven plays had their second score. With the ball on the Warwick thirty-four yard line and only fifty-eight seconds left the Warriors went to work. After two running plays, the quarterback threw the ball to another team member. This play picked up twenty-four yards. On the one yard line a War- rior carried the ball for another score. The two point conversion was completed. The final score was Warwick twenty-one and E-Town eighteen. Victory had once again been captured by the War- riors after their losing streak. The fans rejoiced. The players were full of pride, and spirit was re- tained in all hearts throughout the day. Top Left: Keith Groff practices his kick before the game. This program included songs from Up on a Housetop to a selection from Amahl and the Night Visitors, an opera by Menotti. It was a beautiful show with the traditional candle lighting ceremony and with alumni help- ing to sing the Hallelujah chorus by Han- del. The Glee Club members should be given a firm pat on the back for adiusting and readiusting to two music substitute teach- ers, Miss Bean and Mrs. Limbert, while waiting for the original director, Mrs. Pip- part, to return from her journey to Hunga- ry. The Glee Club members welcomed Mrs. Pippart back to Warwick High School and looked forward to a productive end- ing to the l985-86 school year. Top: l985 Warwitk High School Glee Club. This two act play was located at the compound of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during many months of the Korean conflict. The evening was full of laughter which was due to many humorous events which varied from Burns's dead cat to WaIdowski's memorable occasion when he was brought back from the dead! Both of these and many other episodes were due to the witty and hysterical pranks of Hawkeye Pierce and Captain Duke Forrest. The Warrior Wampum staff meets each club period to produce a newspa- per for the student body. This year their goal has been to publish three pa- pers, and next year they hope to ex- ceed that number. The staff members meet to discuss sto- ry topics, and then each person writes his article. The editors Cnews, social, and sportsb help by proofreading each story. After the writing process is com- pleted, the articles are typed and sent to the publisher. The publisher returns the stories in a column format to them, and they position the articles on a sam- ple newspaper page. The company re- turns a finished paper to them after that. The entire process takes approxi- mately four to five weeks. ln addition to writing stories, they take photographs and gather advertise- ments for the paper. This was first introduced last year and was a great success. We hope it is just as successful with the l986 Warrian. Winning the district title the girls became the 5th team at Warwick to do so. However, their 4th place finish at States was a first by any team. The senior captains can be awfully proud to have played as a Warrior and to have set such precedence. The Warwick field hockey team led the L- L league in offense with 29 goals scored. Also the team scored a total of 54 goals throughout the season. Including the tie breakers, the team scored an additional four goals. The top three scorers for this year were: Kelly Glass Cl9j, Michelle Hershey CID, Julie Teaman 495. The Warwick defensive team led the L-L league in total defense with only allowing two goals scored. The defense however, did not allow a single goal to be scored off a penalty corner. Nancy Gockley, Warwick goalkeeper, saved 59 of 63 shots that got to her. That would be a 942 save average. She is credited with a to- tal of I4 shutouts in QI games. Nancy at one time had a series of 8 shut outs in a row. The i985 varsity football season was filled with frus- trating losses, but the players never gave up, not even when they were outmanned by teams with superior size, speed, and talent. ln each of the seven losses, 1 the team went into the fourth quarter in a position to win. Never were they losing by more than a touch- down at the end of three periods. But lack of exper- ience, lack of team speed, and lack of depth took their toll in each of their losses. The team could not be accused of lack of effort, though. Bottom - The leader in 'Actionf The team with the bright yellow 'Spald- ing' tennis balls finished second in Sec- tion I with a record of 6-I. The team was led by its number one player, junior Brad Zechman. This incredible player had an outstanding year, winning all his dual matches to finish with a record of I2-O. He also won the League Singles Ti- tle and the District 3 Singles Title. Brad finished among the top I6 players in the state in the State Tournament. Senior Doug Steinhauer had a league record of 6-I and played in the District mixed doubles tournament. Doug won some big matches for the team over the years, and his loss through graduation will be felt next season. Senior Tony Erkens and exchange student Gonzalo lrazabal will also be absent from next year's team. Each of them played sev- eral matches. Underclassmen Mike Henderson, Brian Geller, and Derrek Freeseman will be looked to for help with next year's team in its quest for a title. Mike Henderson had a final IO-2 record at H3 and showed great im- provement from his freshman season. Brian Geller, with a record of 7-4, and Derrek Freeseman, with a 4-O record, should return to help. The team's third place fin- ish in the All-League meet is the highest finish since I968. The season was exciting due to the fact that only eight lettermen returned. Still, the team worked together with the leadership from senior captains Blake Bender and Mark Wood. A satisfying season for the seniors, it was their fourth consecutive Section ll title. They will leave Warwick with something that no other team can boast about. They never lost a league meet in four years. Four of the seniors completed four seasons: Blake Bender, Jim Koelsch, Jeff Binzen, and Mark Wood. They have many fine memories of their seasons. They will long be re- membered, not just for their accomplishments, but for what they gave of themselves to make this team strive for more. - Coach Derr .... . .C x:....,,.c.-,Q-:,..,,.e...,. ssiis W - --L--f ..,- , ,. ., . -is , .. ,.. ,.... ,s,...,,. ,,...., .as .,,,. .,.,.. , ,.....,... , ,.,. ,,.... , . ,, . .. . .gs in ,L 1 , Top - I986 Boys Track Team - Front Row: Tammy Krentz, Mark Wood, Chris Ulrich, Blake Bender, Chris Knight, Marlin Hershey, Jim Hess, Chris Rihn, Chris Harnish, Mark Pauling, Tom Schaeffer, Andy Garner, Amy Sen- senig, Second Row: Elissa Long, Tim McCreary, Ryan Horning, Scott Martin, Chris Martin, Jace Mellinger, Jed Althouse, Jeff Vanbrookhaven, Dane Horn- ing, Scott Weller, Chris Dombach, Mike McCloud, Sigmund Lystrup, Stacey Brown, Third Row: Doreen Brubaker, Scott Weitzel, Jeff Binzen, Mark New- comer, Trevor Hackman, Jim Koelsch, John Kurtz, Gene Delong, Doug Tyson, Scott Allen, Jess Anderson, Mike Groff, Shane Hernandez, Dave Fritz, Wendi Hutchinson, Fourth Row: Dan Kachel, Chris Burns, Bill Wentling, Duane Shank, Kevin Hevener, Mike Eager, Scott Koring, Alec Frick, Tom Garrett, Phil Price, Brian Giliberti, John Gaughan, Coach Derr. l5O Top Right - Jeff pushes for his final lap. The annual talent show is an attraction Warwick students and faculty look forward to each year. This year's show contained numerous solo- ists and many air bands. Each act of the talent show had its own unique quali- ties. No one ever knew what was com- ing up next. As the show came to a close, all over the building was heard, . . . Can't wait till next year. and Did you know they could play like that? Well, the show is on its way again, so let's see what it has in store for us next year. RAI DRDPS 0 RQSES The Hills were truly alive on April IO, ll, and I2 when many Warwick drama-affiliated students smelled like roses as they performed Rogers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music . This delightful and heartwarming musical was of a young and outgoing nun searching for her real niche in life. Maria, the nun, was played extremely well by junior, Jill Downing. The nun experiences a taste of the real world as she becomes a nanny to seven Von Trapp children. Three of the actors who played the children were not of high school age. Megan Reardon played Brigitta while attending Middle School, Jamie Wallace played Gretl, and Elizabeth Dougherty played Marta. Both were of elementary and pre- school age. These three were a creative and talented addi- tion to the cast. Captain Von Trapp, a prestigious and true head of the house, was a little disturbed by Maria's way of entertaining his children. The Captain was played exuber- antly by senior, Spencer Keasey. The odd couple of the musical were the Captain's friends, Max Detweiler and Elsa Schraeder. These two parts, played by Eugene DeLong and Nell Amidon, brought humor and great entertainment to the show. As Maria taught the children many songs, her feelings toward the Captain changed. lt was no longer just a feeling of respect, but one of mutual love. Finally, the wedding day came, and the sounds of sweet music were even louder. The musical ends with an heroic escape from Nazi-infested Austria to the neutral and free Alps of Swit- zerland by the courageous Von Trapp family. Many hours and hard work by cast, crew, helpful parents, and members of the community were given to make this year's musical a success. Sue Logan, the publicity manager, helped tremendously by getting the school involved in the Hands Across America promotion. This led to an inter- view and a spot on Channel Eight T.V.'s P.M. Magazine for the musical cast. Much gratitude and applause should and was given to a truly splendid cast which made three glorious nights filled with the warm and lovely sound of music. l56 fm fi I Page l56 Top Left: The Von Trapp children sing with a smile. N S lnducts Fort -Eight New Members fi iw. s 3 rf On Monday evening, May l9, l986, the Warwick Chapter of the National Honor Society held its annual induction ceremony. The forty-eight inductees were eligible for induction into the National Honor Society as a result of obtaining a 3.25 grade point average at the end of the third nine weeks of his or her junior or senior year. Leadership qualities, character, and service to the school and community were also factors used to deter- mine which students were eligible for the award. The evening began with Mike Badorf welcoming everybody in attendance. After the welcome, four present mem- bers of the National Honor Society spoke on qualifica- tions. Eric Wolfe began by speaking on scholarship, which followed by Marc Flickinger on leadership. Next, Gretchen Rhoads spoke on character, and Kathy Delbert concluded by speaking about service. After the four speakers finished addressing the audience, Mike Badorf introduced the new members, who were escorted to the front of the cafeteria by present members of the Na- tional Honor Society. With all new members at the front of the cafeteria, each held a lighted candle while recit- ing the National Honor Society Pledge. E 5 ggi s Q 3 ft Ri., f Q Q Ass P a. Q 3 g g Q cfs.. S S' N f Q L . The theme for the I986 Prom was Paradise Island, and for most it was paradise. The junior class poured much effort into the preparations for a successful evening. The activities began at the Qld Hickory Inn, where a variety of grateful borrowed cars, including a chauffeur-driven limousine, ar- rived to deliver the honored guests. Dinner consisted of melon balls served in champagne as the cocktail, salad as the appetizer, and for the main course, stuffed capons and french cut green beans. What could follow such a dinner, but dancing? Though the dance floor was small, no couple, who wanted to, seemed to have any trouble finding its own private spotlight. The enter- tainment also included a recap of the ever popular Amish Rap by Eugene DeLong and Jon Hess. Prom Queen, Lori Schneider escorted by Scott Deisley, was selected by an unbi- ased committee made up of teachers' escorts. Lori was PARADIE crowned by our spokesperson for the evening, Julie Turano. To top what seemed to be an already perfect evening, those who chose to, attended Post Prom. Car keys were collected upon entry. Not that it mattered, for once one stepped into this Island Paradise, few would want to leave. The juniors were to be commended for the excellent decorations. Step- ping over the bridge at the entrance, one could almost imag- ine being on a Pacific Isle. The gym and gym lobby floor had been transformed into a truly tropical setting. The foyer was decorated with a white bridge and a pool containing assorted goldfish located underneath. The lobby had several shops - AIison's Flowers, Basket Bazaar, and Paradise Apparel. The gym was filled with trees and benches and a cage filled with assorted birds. Music at the Post Prom was supplied by the same D. J. as the one who entertained at the Prom. For those whose feet were too tired to dance by this hour of the morning, two movies were provided, Splash and Back to the Future. The entire affair was both well organized and fully enjoyed.
