406, the endzone for another touchdown to make the score twelve to seven in favor of Warwick. Although the halftime festivities kept the fans' attention, they were fidgeting impatiently, awaiting the balance of the game. When the teams finally reappeared, the action of the third quarter was kept at a minimum compared to the rest of the game. However, the dearth of activity must have been the lull before the storm because the fourth quarter was a flurry of excitement maintained at an intense plateau. Penn Manor drove the ball seventy-five yards to score a touch- down to put them ahead by one point. To the fans it seemed like the end, but the Warwick football team furiously tried to acquire the points that would make it a joyous Homecoming. However, the rigid Penn Manor defense would not budge. Many times the Warwick offense moved close to the goal line, but could not score. With only one minute to play, the Warwick candle of hope flickered dangerously. But the resil- ient Warriors fought back once again. This time they were not to be denied. With ten seconds left, the Warriors scratched and clawed their way to the Penn Manor ten yard line. Quickly, the Warwick field goal unit scurried out onto the gridiron to attempt a thirty yard field goal. The center hiked the ball, and the place kicker booted the pigskin to- ward the goalposts. As the ball floated through the air, time stood still, breaths held. Miraculously, the ball inched be- tween the goal posts for three points. There was joy in Mudville. Chaos everywhere - it was pandemonium. Everybody from Warwick was jumping up and down, screaming, hug- ging, kissing, dancing, and singing. The people had come and quenched their thirst for football, and half left repleted. But even after the game fans left, the greying bleachers, barren field, and dying grass held the memories of the Homecoming game. -- Doug Williams Top: Check this out!
