1985 WARRIAN Warwick Senior High School Lititz, Pennsylvania Volume 29 On behalf of the administration and faculty at Warwick High School, I extend my appre- ciation to the Warwick Yearbook Staff for their many hours of hard work in producing this yearbook. The Warrian provides the ad- ministration, teachers, students, parents and community members with an opportunity to remember the highlights of the 1984-85 school year. This yearbook shows the many different activities, both in the classroom and extracurricular, which comprise a school year. I'm sure as this yearbook is read, the readers will both remember and share in the pride which has become a tradition at War- wick High School. This yearbook captures the true meaning of Warwick High School, people working together to provide a quality educational program. Mr. Stephen A. Iovino Principal Picture this - if you will, fifty years from now. What will the typical Warwick High School student be like? What will high school life be like? And best of all - what will your life be like? This query will be answered in your lifetime after you have spent a major portion of your career working towards your goals. The long hours of hard work, dedication and commit- ment, which is the price one must pay before reaching his goals, is often too much for most humans. Will you convey to your peers just how worthwhile the education you received at War- wick really was! And will you remember how diligently your teachers toiled to help you attain that grade of A, B, C, or even D! These brief years of earnest endeavor and happy fellowships will surely afford you many pleasant life memories. The many friendships and the pleasureable recollections of these high school years will live with you forever. In the years to come, your life will be a reflector to society, and what you have gained during your years in school will be a sum total of your experiences. Your success in the future will be greatly determined by your actions of the past, honesty in your dealings, sincerity in your purpose and determination in your efforts. As you enter a new era in your life, may the lessons of citizenship, fair play, sportsmanship and trustworthiness you have learned, help you surmount the more difficult times in the future. My most sincere and best wishes are extended to each of you for happy and successful years to come. Mr. Carl B. Kaufman Assistant Principal 2 Top: . . . you dicln't? Top Right: Brown bagging it. The 'LSpirit of America was evident in everything, from the Spirit of American Victory to the 'Aspir- it of American competition. As the football team worked hard on their game, each class worked hard on its float. Long hours with paint and plywood were endured in various barns and garages all over Lititz. The Statue of Liberty was flown in from the New York Harbor, Betsy Ross was raised from the dead, along with John Paul Jones, and sand was shipped in from the coast of California. Each class reflected on the history of Amer- ica or some part of American life. The Fresh- man float recreated historical moments: Bet- sy Ross's famous stitchery and an explora- tory space flight. The Sophomore float boasted American apple pie, Benjamin Franklin's high-flying discovery, and the Lady of the harbor. The Junior float sailed smoothly along with actors bravely stating, as John Paul Jones had once done, 'Ll have not yet begun to fight, in reference to the Com- ets. Bikini-clad beauties lounged on the hot American sand adoring the dashing surfers, Surfin USA , the Senior float tied with the Junior float, John Paul Jones , for third place. Second place was attained by the Sophomore float, Hlrlistorical Moments . The Freshman float deservingly captured the first place prize with f'Betsy Rossu. All in all, it was a day to remember! Like salmon, the brightly ornamented leaves of the autumnal equi- nox spawn to the ground, covering the green of summer. In towns, cities, and hamlets across America, peo- ple gather for the last chance to congregate out of doors before winter tightens its grip upon the land. Parades, pic- nics, and parties are prevalent, but the Homecoming foot- ball game is the most popular social assemblage. Certainly, the clash that took place between the Warwick Warriors and the Penn Manor Comets on the fourth Saturday of October typifies the Homecoming annual. Grosh Field at Warwick High School was ablaze with harvest time spirit. Adorned with red and black streamers, the gray bleachers remained august amidst the pageantry and spectacle of the game. And because Indian summer was yet lingering, the weather was hot and sunny, drying the multicolor leaves underfoot. The maidens of the Homecom- ing Court smiled and waved as they were chauffeured around the field by the convertibles of summer. Neat and trim, the football field looked as if it were going out on a date. Freshly shaven, every blade of grass was cut to perfection, and the white grid of the field was newly limed by industrious greenskeepers. The throngs of football fans hungrily await- ed the opening kickoff. The game was ready to begin. As the whistle blew, the Penn Manor kicker booted a high, lazy kick that safely landed into the arms of the Warwick returner. Then, the Warwick ball carrier ran into a shower of Comets. But as if invisible, the runner quickly emerged from the pack of opposing players and streaked toward the land of milk and honey, the end zone. He reached the coveted ground and held the ball up triumphantly as his teammates smothered him with joy. The tone of electrifying football was set and the gleeful fans settled in, luxuriating in the fervor. But the opposing team was not to be daunted. After trailing six to nothing, the redoubtable Penn Manor team struck gold with a punt return for a touchdown. The Comet runner eluded the Warwick defense for fifty years, taking the taste of victory away from the Warrior fans. However, just before halftime, the Warwick quarterback slipped into Top: Here come the Warriors! Center: Hold those Comets! Bottom: Sideline Showoffs! Although the halftime festivities kept the fans' attention, they were fidgeting impatiently, awaiting the balance of the game. When the teams finally reappeared, the action of the third quarter was kept at a minimum compared to the rest of the game. However, the dearth of activity must have been the lull before the storm because the fourth quarter was a flurry of excitement maintained at an intense plateau. Penn Manor drove the ball seventy-five yards to score a touch- down to put them ahead by one point. To the fans it seemed like the end, but the Warwick football team furiously tried to acquire the points that would make it a joyous Homecoming. However, the rigid Penn Manor defense would not budge. Many times the Warwick offense moved close to the goal line, but could not score. With only one minute to play, the Warwick candle of hope flickered dangerously. But the resil- ient Warriors fought back once again. This time they were not to be denied. With ten seconds left, the Warriors scratched and clawed their way to the Penn Manor ten yard line. Quickly, the Warwick field goal unit scurried out onto the gridiron to attempt a thirty yard field goal. The center hiked the ball, and the place kicker booted the pigskin to- ward the goalposts. As the ball floated through the air, time stood still, breaths held. Miraculously, the ball inched be- tween the goal posts for three points. There was joy in Mudville. Chaos everywhere - it was pandemonium. Everybody from Warwick was jumping up and down, screaming, hug- ging, kissing, dancing, and singing. The people had come and quenched their thirst for football, and half left repleted. But even after the game fans left, the greying bleachers, barren field, and dying grass held the memories of the Homecoming game. -- Doug Williams Top: Check this out! Ulrike Ulrike Schmidt, known to everyone as Ricky, is a YFU student from West Germany. Ricky is staying with the War- ren Weiss family in Lititz. When Ricky arrived she was surprised to see how friendly and open people are toward each other. She likes the idea that sixteen year olds are able to drive in America. German teenagers must be eighteen to obtain a license. The YFU program fYouth for Understand- ingl does not allow the foreign exchange students to drive during their stay. School districts do not exist in Ricky's homeland. The students are given the choice of which school they prefer to attend. A typical school week includes six days of school attendance. The second Saturday of every month is a vacation day for the students. Ricky is involved with the Glee Club, concert band, and orchestra. Her favor- ite foods are all the very fresh salads and fruits. 'iWith this short note I want to say hello and thank you to everybody in the Warwick High School. My stay for one year was a unique experience and was a postive and absolutely great one because of all the friendly, nice girls and boys and teachers here in school. My new friends helped me in all Hstrangef' situations, and I'm very sure that I will never forget you, the teachers, and our very funny senior year. - Ricky . . . Yvonne Yvonne Kruiswijk, an EFFS fEducational Foun- dation for Foreign Studyi student from I-Iolland, is staying with the Sheldon Murr family. Yvonne com- ments that the biggest differences between Holland and the United States are language and environ- ment. The houses in America seem to be bigger and the Lititz community is cleaner and newer. Yvonne likes the after school activities but does not enjoy following the same schedule every day. Home- work, especially English, presents Yvonne with the most trouble. Some of her favorite American foods include pizza and hamburgers. Yvonne's favorite activities include tennis, reading, and needlework. One year of high school in the United States, it sounded great. When the time got closer I wasnft sure anymore about myself. I didn't know what to expect of Lititz, school, and the people. But now I'm here and itfs great. Everybody is so nice to me. The first time is sometimes hard, but I'm sure when it's June I will feel sorry to leave. I want to say hi to everybody who were fand arel my friends. I will always remember you, War- wick, and good, old Lititz. If you are ever in the neighborhood be sure to visit mef' - Yvonne vv Wu.. 'M CLOSE P OF . . . Mohammed Mohammed Baoueb is visiting America with the AFS program and is staying with the Kenneth Boak family. Mohammed, from Tunisia, likes America because friend- ship is most important to Americans. He also thinks America is a very beautiful country and Lititz is a healthy town. Hamburgers, beef hot dogs, and cookies are among some of his favorite American foods. Mohammed com- mented that in Tunisia one must be twenty years old to drive. Being 19, he is waiting patiently to be able to drive because the AFS program will not allow him to do so, although he is of proper age. Volleyball and track are just two of the many sports in which Mohammed participates. In America, the students are fortunate that they must only attend five days of school a week. Mohammed, who graduated from his old school last year, had to attend school six days a week. I want to say that being in Warwick High School is a great thing for students who are there for knowledge. I'm happy to be with American students, and I'm glad to meet everyday a new friend, staff, or pupil. - Mo- hammed . . Bjom Bjorn Telenius, visiting Warwick from Finland, is part of the YFU program. He is staying with the Ronald Calhoun family. Bjorn enjoys all American food but lists stromboli as his favorite. He likes that Warwick students are able to choose which classes they want to take. In Finland, the students' classes are all required. He, however, does not espe- cially enjoy study halls at Warwick. During his study halls in his hometown he is able to go home. Bjorn was ex- pecting America to be much bigger. When he arrived, he was surprised to find that it is similar to Finland, Bjorn is involved in the Warwick Soccer Team. I would like to thank Warwick stu- dents and teachers for being very friendly and helpful to me. l have learned a lot of different things at War- wick and I am glad that l was placed in this school district. It has been reward- ing and l'm sure the rest of my year will be as rewarding. - Bjorn CWC QM Auf' 'Wnapaw 'Y' 51? oa- it ZOOMI ..Jun Jun Sato of Japan is living with the Craig Hess family. Jun, who is here with the YFU program, was surprised at the large size of America. He likes that our school system is not so strict and a weekly attendance only consists of five days. In Japan the students attend school six days a week. Jun enjoys playing soccer on the Warwick soccer team and dur- ing clubs. He has the most trouble with people who speak too fast. He, however, has no problem enjoying American food, In a word I am very happy to meet the Warwick students. They are very kind and friendly. I want to have a memory of this year in my life. - Jun. Ladies and gentlemen, I beg you, open your eyes, you have arrived at La Cage Aux Folles! Is this band? Yes, this year Broad- way came alive on the field for the Warwick High School Band with their rendition of the hit musical comedy, i'I.a Cage Aux Follesf' Through the diligent efforts of the staff, the show concept arranged by Steve and Bobbie McMillian treated spectators to a visu- al, as well as musical, extravaganza. Amidst applause, the announcer, Bill Gardner, the voice of Warwick, began the show with his infamous . . . I-Iere's Warwick! It started like a Broadway show, with an orchestra warming up and the dancers stretching before their performance. Then on to the first number, I Am What I Amn and 'iCocktail-counterpoint from the 74 Tony Award winning La Cage Aux Follesfl Next it was on to A Piece of Skyl' from the movie Yentl.', This was highlighted by an unusual, but ex- citing swinging ball routine, The show ended with 'KThe Best of Times topped off with the chorus and La Cage show girls. This year's band was unusually young with over half the band and front being underclassmen and seventh and eighth graders. The year began slow, and hopes were dim, but with each per- formance the band improved dramati- cally and spirits rose. Then, at states, that certain burst of emotion where mu- sicians become performers, the band reached for that illusive piece of sky and achieved their highest score of the season by taking second place. The year will be topped off with a trip to Florida in the spring. What does the future hold for the Warwick I-Iigh School Band? Only time will tell . . . The 1984 football season featured everything from glorious victories to heart- breaking defeats for the Warriors. The most glorious victory came on Homecom- ing Day when league co-champion Penn Manor fell to an inspired Warwick team. It was the only league loss in 1984 for the Comets. The most heartbreaking loss was the season finale when a 3-O defeat at the hands of an inspired Manheim Central team prevented the Warriors from sharing the league championship with Penn Manor and Conestoga Valley. After an impressive opening non-league win over Lebanon Catholic, the Warriors lost their next three games. Non-league losses to a very talented Hempfield team and archrival Manheim Township were followed by a disappointing loss to Conestoga Valley in the league opener. A field goal with five seconds left in the game was the margin of victory for the Buckskins. A five-game winning streak, all league victories, followed the losing streak as the Warriors emerged as one of the league's better teams. The loss to Central snapped the winning streak. The 1984 varsity football team provided many thrills and lots of excitement. The team also displayed a never-say-die attitude that has become typical of Warwick athletic teams. The twenty-four seniors, who provided the spark and leadership, each contributed greatly to the team's success. They have made a lasting impression on the school's football program and have set a great example for all of those future Warriors who will follow them. - Coach Snyder Top - 1984 Football Team - Front Row: Coach John Mattern, Coach Garry Fuhrman, Coach Steve Barbato, Bob Mekolichick, Dave Williamson, Don Landis, Tim J. This was good enough for a second place finish in Section Two of the Lanc.-Leb. Hockey League. The team's success was largely due to the team's desire to play well and will- ingness to work hard for what they wanted. Much credit needs to be given to a large group of seniors that provided the leadership and guidance to guide this team to another play-off berth. This year the team wrote another page in Warwick Hockey history by winning their first district game and qualifying for the district quarterfinals. Also, Michelle Hershey and Krista Weit were named to the All-Star Team. Warwick played many underclassmen in its first varsity season, suffering some lopsided defeats, however, with many players returning next season, the team should be much improved. The theme of the 1985 Tournament of Roses Pa- rade was uthe Spirit of America. Each float was beautiful, uniquely different and very colorful. The HSpirit of Warwick is of course not found on Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena, CA, but rather in a select group of young ladies who can be found making a sign, decorat- ing a locker, working hard at practice or cheering at an athletic event. Each one of the cheerleading squads I have coached over the past five years has been like one of those Rose Parade floats with this year's squads being no exception. All three squads - SoccerfGirls Basketball, JV, and Varsity have been kept busy by having a successful in-school Homecoming Pep Rally in the fall and of course cheering for Warwick's ex- tremely successful winter teams. The Warwick cheerleaders are a unique group of young ladies, their personalities are all very colorful, and they have given me some beautiful memories. l will miss being a part of this Spirit of Warwick. - Coach Becky Hershey Top right - Cheering the basketball team on. The year began in middle August with a workshop. Many people and hours have been involved to date to create for you a quality yearbook. Our new features this year include: our own cover design, spring delivery with a fall supple- ment, spot color section, current events, and fabulous fads. We are also pleased we have carried our theme i'Picture this . . , through- out the book. l hope you have enjoyed the book as much as we have enjoyed creating it. A special thank you to advisor Mrs. Witmyer, and hard-working editors Jill Wozniak, Michele Shelly, Angie Frank, Liz l-leckles, Lori Shenk, Jodi Ruhl, Maureen McCaffery, Nell Amidon, and Judy Garner as well as the Heisey Studio and Al Oussoren, our I-lerff-Jones representative. - Jodi Myers 1985 Editor-in-Chief 144 REMEMBER . . . . . Marilyn Joy Mellinger Sorrow mixed with joy - that phrase may best describe our remem- brance of Marilyn. On May 13, in the midst of our final days at Warwick, Marilyn was taken in a tragic car accident. We have pain in Marilyn's leaving, but joy in our everlasting memory of her. The memories of Marilyn are those of a bright smile, outgoing personality, and neat appearance. Knowing God would comfort her, she was not afraid to face the trials of everyday life and always concentrated on the good times. Marilyn felt secure about her relationship with God, and was ready to accept his calling. We should use her life as an example for ourselves and live life to the fullest as she did. We'll cherish the warmth, The friendship, the love, one, And we'll miss her often As she travels to the most beauti- ful place of all. There comes a time When we lose that special some- But she'll be deep in our hearts As we live our lives through. We may not be able to bring her No one will ever replace her, back, For she's one of a kind, But her memory will always be And, for the Class of 85 , cherished. lt's hard to accept her leaving, But we'll never say good-bye! We wish happiness to all, and for all, eternal life! - A Friend. and Carl aufman Science students for twenty-nine years remember Stanley Schoenberger. His last year at Warwick before retirement being 1985, the Warrian is proud to remember his achievements and efforts throughout the years. He served as coach for the football team for several years, helped start the wrestling squad, and was department head for many years as well. Schoenbergefs dedica- tion to the science field puts him on top as a member of the Warwick teaching staff. He promoted excellence in both athletics and academics. The Warrian 'wishes him complete happiness in his retirement years. All students of Warwick High throughout the years remember Carl Kaufman. Although many remember awaiting discipline, many also remember the slight smile and nod of approval. Kauf- man's years at Warwick began in 1956, when he headed the English department. Most of his years, however he filled the position of Assistant Principal. Kaufman was an asset to the school, starting many special programs, some of which included the club program, the district newsletter, and the back-to-school night for parents. The Warrian thanks him for his dedication and wishes him the best of luck for his retirement years. 145 ASEB LL HAS STRONG SEASON Having a league record of 9-7, an overall record ot 11-8, and only three returning lettermen, the 1985 baseball team put on a fine showing. Seniors Pat Scott, Dirk Freeseman, and Bill Sherriff led the team well as tri-captains. A few players even left their marks in the record books by the end ofthe season. Senior pitcher Bill Sherriff hurled fourteen strike- outs against Ephrata for a record number of strike-outs in a game. Junior pitcher Harley Greenway set the new standard for strike-outs in a season with fifty. Sophomore Tom Eberly recorded the highest batting average during a season, with at least fifty times at bat, with a .412. Next year's team will suffer the loss of only three seniors and will see the return of many lettermen. This Warwick-Spirited track team was dominated by the seniors who provided leadership both on and off the track. Two of these leaders and co-captains were Keith Ressler and Drew Pierce. This year's team won Warwick's third consecutive Section ll Title. Along with it, this exuberant team has won 19 league meets in a row. During this season, the team averaged 98.7 points. Previous school records were broken in the 800 meter run with a time of 1258.3 by Drew Pierce, 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.0 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 39.63 both by Mark Wood, and the 400 relay with a time of 44.9 by Ron Wood, JR. Zartman, Mohammed Baoueb, and Blake Bender. Also the team's top scorer, Mark Wood, placed fifth in Districts in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Compiling a league record of 5- 1, they finished second in Section ll, New records were set by Angie Forry in the 100m hurdles ftiedl, by Pam Snavely in the 1600m and 3200m, and by Sue Baker in the shotput. The team entered many competitors in the League meet with five athletes winning medals. The 4x100m relay fl'leather McCloud, Jill Althouse, Kim Buckwalter, and Anne Swanl placed fifth, and Maureen McCaffery placed fourth in the triple jump. Moving on to Districts, quite a few team members qualified for the meet at Shippensburg. Kim Kometa competed in the high jump, Angie Forry vied in the hurdles, and Pam Snavely ran in the 3200m. Heather McCloud ran the 200m, Jill Althouse ran the 100m, and both ran with their counterparts in the 4x100m relay as t'The Blur. Unfortunately, none of the warriorettes placed at the District meet, but even so, the whole team should be commended for their overall record of 8-4. Right 1 The LL League Singles Champion - Kyle Haw- thorne. The 1984-85 boys, tennis season ranks as one of the finest, if not the best, in Warwick tennis history. Sophomores Kyle Hawthorne and Brad Zechman led the team again by playing 121 and W2 respectively. Senior Chad Walter played H3 above junior Doug Steinhauer, while senior Brian Nicarry held down the 95 spot. The Warrior netmen swept to the Section I title with a record of 8-O. ln the process, they compiled a singles record of 40-O. The Section l title was their fourth in the last eight years and their second in a row. The Warriors then met Section ll champions, Hempfield, for the League Championship. Warwick got singles victories from Kyle Hawthorne, Brad Zechman, and Doug Steinhauer. An additional doubles victory by Hawthorne and Zechman clinched the League Championship Match, 4-2. Further- more, Warwick had the League Singles Champion, Kyle Hawthorne, who won his second consecutive League singles crown. Hawthorne and Zechman moved on to the District Singles Tournament where they both advanced to the quarterfinals before losing. They then teamed up for doubles and came back to win the District Doubles Championship. In so doing, they amassed enough points to give Warwick the District III Team Championship - our first ever! lt was then on to the State Tournament at Bloomsburg where Hawthorne and Zechman took the fourth place medal in doubles. This article will update all achievements not previously covered. Boys Basketball - The squad entered the district playoffs strongly with wins over Greencastle and York Central, but they then fell to York Suburban and East Pennsboro. Earning a place in state playoffs, the Warriors went up against Montoursville but suffered defeat. Ending on a good note, both Lance Wagner and Dennis Hurd were named to the LI. all-star team, while Hurd also made the District 3 all-tournament squad. Girls Basketball - The girls went to district playoffs and fought to a third place finish, a first for Warwick girls teams. Continuing to rewrite the history books, the squad earned a place in the State Tournament. Playing their way to the Eastern State final, the team was voted among the top five in the state. A fine finish for our women of the court. Wrestling - The only Warwick grappler to place in the District Tournament was Tim Weaver. He wrestled his way to a second place medal. Music - Eric Zimmerman played his trumpet to earn a spot in Regional Band. On a more classical note, Kelly Koncle achieved places in the Regional and State Orchestras with her string bass. Both should be congratulated for their fine performances. 155 THE CAMER ROLLS O lt's the biggest musical production of the year! The spring musical, i'Bye Bye Birdie , was presented on the evenings of March 28th, 29th and 30th. Warwick's unique version of the comedy, set in the 195O's, involved weeks of hard work by the music, art and stage departments. For each area it is a major undertaking. Audiences watching the show, lmany of them from the 50's generation themselvesl heartily enjoyed the cast's portrayal of that era. Providing authentic costumes from their own attics, the cast enthusiastically adopted the look. Rock star Conrad Birdie, portrayed by Bill Oehme, showed off a flashy gold jumpsuit, while his fans, dressed in poodle skirts, bobbysocks, and scarves, leaped wildly and screamed after him. Lauren Loercher put her singing and dancing skills to good use in the song and dance, HSpanish Rose, as did Spencer Keasey while telling the Sad Girl to Put on a Happy Face. Jon Perini, Mandy Nuss, Gretchen Rhoads, and Kevin Dodge skillfully portrayed the typical American family, the lVlcAfees. The memories created during the practice and performance of this musical will last a lifetime. 156 'KPN fa xx ET OF BYE BYE BIRDIE! V . The 1985 Talent show, em- ceed by Bill Oehme and Drew Pierce, can go on the record books as the best in Warwick l'ligh's history. Numerous 3 , bands and soloists performed original numbers, as well as songs recorded by the best in secular and Christian music. Quality was also in the spotlight during the Student Expo. Warwick honors its students each year by having them display their areas of involvement. The displays included a com' puter demonstration, Vo-Ag animals, baked goods, sewing, wood, metal, and art projects. The upperclassmen are finally set free from the bore- dom and suppressed excitement that accompanies the day of the prom. The yearly tradition of parading the cars around the school, making as much noise as is humanly possible, has begun, during which studious freshmen and sophomores ,T WSJ struggle through final exams. The preparation for the social highlight of the year began weeks, even months ago. The juniors, knowing that the R Q prom is quite a financial undertaking, budgeted and planned fund-raisers. Individual juniors and seniors did the same with , -.1 r their own finances, saving lor having parents shell out cashl i to get that alluring white satin gown and the perfectly tai- lored grey tux. And, of course, having the perfect date for if the most important social event of the year ranked high on T the list of things to do. When the day finally arrived, the gals rushed to I-lairloom ' My E Designs to have nails and hair done to achieve a look of sophistication. After a delicious meal of Chicken Cordon Bleu, the tables were cleared to prepare the dance floor. Couples danced the night away, venturing often to the refreshment bar and into the cool night to escape the heat ofthe dance floor. The all important walk of the senior girls, during which the judg- ing for the Prom Queen occurred, happened early in the evening. Although the decision was a tough one, with all the beautiful young ladies of the senior class, Lisa Nicksic was finally pronounced Prom Queen. She, with her escort, Sher- man Kohler, led the couples into a romantic dance. At eleven, when the formalities at the Treadway were concluded, couples ventured to the post prom, where ambi- tious juniors spent hours decorating the gym and cafeteria areas as from the Old West.
