The thing that made the Knights stand out was their character. In seven of nine games, they trailed at half-time and four times they came back to win. Three team records were set this season: 1 567 yards passing for a season (old record 1464 yards, in 1978), 31 6 yards passing in a game (old record 303 yards in 1968) and total offense for a season, 2997 yards (old record 2824 yards in 1968). Five players gained individual attention with their record breaking: freshman Gary Walljasper holds the school highs for most passes completed in a season (1 32), total passing in a game (31 6 yards), total passing in a season (1 567 yards), total offense in a season (1 41 7 yards), and touchdown passes in a season (12). Ken Frost holds most passes received in a season (46) and most passes received in a career (85). Dennis Washington holds the longest kick-off return (99 yards). Best punting average for the season is held by Dan Rund at 39.5 yards. Rod Feddersen tied the touchdown pass mark with seven carries. As a team, Wartburg outgained its opponents, 2997 yards to 2336, and outscored them 187-145. BASEBALL Thils year marked the end of Earnest Opper- nnann ' s 34-year career at Wartburg as basebal I coach, physical education and physics instructor. At the end of this baseball season, Opper- mann ' s career standings were 354 wins to 367 losses. He began playing baseball in the 1930 ' s and had a successful high school career at Strawberry Point. After graduating, Oppernnann went to Luther on a baseball scholarship and also played football and basketball for the Norsemen. Taking a job to help move Wartburg College from Clinton to Waverly, Oppermann found that the poywas less than expected. So college officials offered to let him finish school at Wartburg cost-free. Oppermann played base- ball for Wartburg, and a good junior season prompted the St. Louis Cardinals to offer him a major league contract. Because of a football injury during his senior year, Oppermonn ' s dreams of a major league baseball career were ended. The injury ruined his throwing arm, and he could no longer make the throw from his catcher ' s position to second base. Oppermann continued to play baseball for town teams which drew crowds of 2000-3000 people. While playing for the Waverly Bears, Oppermann gotthechanceto play the Kansas City Monarchs. The Monarchs featured Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson, both Hall of Fame members. Oppermann earned college degrees in physics and math. His professional goal was to become an aeronautical engineer. But after graduating from Wartburg in 1 938, Oppermann pursued a career in teaching and coaching, urged on by his wife. In 1 943, Oppermann was drafted by the United States Army. A member of the Air Corps, he gained rank until he left as a second lieutenant in 1945. He served as bombardier, navigator and radar man. After discharge, Oppermann was offered a temporaryjob as Dean of Students at Wartburg. The temporary job as dean lasted 23 years. Oppermann also took over as baseball coach in 1948. In his Wartburg career, Oppermann has coached six Iowa Conference champi- onship baseball teams. The Wartburg Knights baseball team finished with a 7-3 MAC record, one ganne behind the channpion, William Penn. Oppermann had expected this to be one of his better clubs, but then shortstop Bobby Garris missed the season because of a broken bone in his wrist, sustained during basketball. This forced them to use converted catcher Steve Schuiz at that infield position. Nevertheless, Wartburg got off to a great start and was in position to make a run for Oppermann ' s seventh IIAC title. However, a costly loss to Central proved to be fatal. Among regulars, one person led the Knights both offensively and on the mound. Greg Schmitz was the Knights ' only .300 hitter with a .31 0 average, and among the starters on the mound he posted a 4-4 record with a 2.95 ERA. Second baseman Mark Arjes led the Knights in homeruns with five, RBI ' s with 23, triples with two and shared the stolen base leadership with Schuiz and rightfielder Bob Hansen with seven each. As a team, the Knights hit .223, their staff ERA was 5.37, and team fielding percentage was .937. Arjes was voted to the first All Iowa Conference team, and Schmitz was selected as a utility pitcher. 142 INTRAMURALS FORTRESS INDEX Allnlghter. Studying until ttie words become blurry? Evey weekend in January and sometimes during the wee c, blizzards snowed Waverly in from the world. Highways were drifted in so that even going to Shell Rock or Bremer was impossible. I hiope thiat it represents ttie year as completely as possible so that when you look at this book many years from now, it will bring back happy memories. A lot of work and time went into making this book possible. I would like to thank eveyone from the bottom of my heart for everything they did: Gary Shanks, Paul Beck, and Bill Bartels (photographers), Heidi Schuster and Jan Meier (staff members). Special thanks goes to Buck Whitve r, the Josten ' s representative, and to Rod Pritchard for volunteering himself the week after school was out to help me get this thing done so I could go home. Patience is not one of my greater virtues, and I really appreciate my friends and family who had the patience to listen to me complain. Bob Gremmels deserves many thanks in his patient advisor capacity, plus the help of everyone in the Public Information office (Judy especially helping with the machine. ) Sudlow Photgraphy deserves much credit for their fine work and time taking the class pictures. It was a job well done. Good luck to next year ' s editors: Heidi Roelfs and Carolyn McClure. Hold onto the dreams of what you want the book to be. Congratulations class of 1982. Four years is a long time at Wartburg. Hopefully they have been a good four years. Good luck in the job market and the future. Thanks and good luck to everyone! 192
