Journalism and English professor 1946-1973. Although Wartburg Publications date back to 1906, it was not until Mrs. Garland joined the faculty in 1946 that Wartburg began to offer courses in journalism and to develop award-winning publications. She served as ad- viser for both the Fortress and the Trumpet and taught courses in English as well as journalism. In 1965 the National Council of College Publications Advisers selected her as the country ' s top yearbook adviser. Since her retirement, Mrs. Garland has continued to live in Waverly and to remain active in writing and publishing. In 1973 her former students honored her bv publishing a volume of her poetrv, and in 1979 the Wart- burg College Chapter of the Society for Collegiate Journalists presented her with its Medal of Merit for Outstanding Contributions to Collegiate Journalism. In addition to concerts by the Wartburg Community Symphony there were many selections of entertain- ment available through Wartburg ' s Artist Series. Long Wharf ' s presentation of Private Lives by Noel Coward marked the first time the theatre group from New Haven, Connecticut, appeared in this area. The comedy revolved around a formerly divorced couple who meet again, but with their newly wed spouses. Known as one of the world ' s most noted choirs, the forty-member Westminster Choir appeared at War- tburg on Nov. 13. Presenting music from the medieval period to the twentieth century, the John Biggs Consort was informal and intimate. Dance was also featured when the Connecticut Dance Theatre came to the Neu- mann Auditorium stage on Feb. 24. Closing out the Artist Series season on March 28 was the L ' Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse. Students also had the opportunity to attend lectures by visiting speakers which, like the Artist Series, covered a diversity of subjects. Dr. Robert Vogel, Wartburg ' s new president, was in- stalled during Homecoming. On the same day author Studs Terkel spoke as part of Wartburg ' s convocation series. Reason ' s Deadly Dreams was the topic of Rabbi Richard Rubenstein ' s talk. Sponsored by the Jewish Chautauqua Society, Rabbi Rubenstein discussed how state-sponsored programs of genocide have become a part of the twentieth century. Peter Davis, who directed such films as The Selling of the Pentagon and Hearts and Minds, visited the Wartburg campus on Feb. 25. Other guests were David Simonson (March 10), Vincent Icke (Jan. 1), Gershom Ma (April 7), and Herb- ert Boyer (April 1) and Peter Davis (Feb. 25). President Robert Vogel Riibbi Richiird Rubenstein, Jewish Chautauqua Society Dr. Andrew Greeley, University of Arizona. 19 Homecoming Weekend Signals New Beginning Louis (Studs) Terkel a best-selling author and radio-television personality, was the keynote speaker at the Renaissance Festival convocation. Terkel, author of best-sellers Working and American Dreams: Lost and Found, is a man interested in the experi- ences of the common working person. Work is an extension of a person, and if that work has no meaning, the person has no meaning. Terkel feels that those who go to school with only the idea of getting ahead in the world are making a perversion of what education is. School, according to Terkel, should mean discovering possibilities within yourself and within all that ' s outside you— opening the window. It ' s being free. Studs Terkel addresses student convocation during Homecoming weekend. Dr. Robert L. Vogel was officially in- stalled as president of Wartburg College in inaugural ceremonies at Neumann Auditorium Friday, Oct. 17. Dr. Vogel replaces Dr. William W. Jellema, who served as president from 1974 to 1980 and is now on the faculty at the University of Con- necticut. Addressing his acceptance speech to individual sectors of the audience. Dr. Vogel said that old commitments had been renewed. Students are the most important people in the Wartburg commu- nity, said Dr. Vogel. He added that he hopes to face students with issues confronting our community. Our purpose is to help you to claim the ground out of which you have come, he said. The rite of inauguration and an ad- dress by Dr. David Preus, president of the American Lutheran Church, preceded Dr. Vogel ' s speech. Preus spoke of the ties between the liberal arts college and the church. Wartburg has helped students ex- plore the wildest possible swamp of ideas, Preus said, and they are clear in their own commitment of Christ in the church. Liberal arts schools make it happen. President Vogel ' s words echoed Preus ' message, Wartburg is, and will continue to be, a college of the church. 20 21 Homecoming Weekend: Kapers and Queens Kastle Kapers Kastle Kapers capp(!d off Friday evening ' s Homecoming actix ifies with two performances. The variety show offered Wartburg stud(!nts a chance; at amateur performances in front of their fellow students. Professors also got into the act of participating by forming their own groups to act or sing. Between the two shows, the crowning of the Homecoming Qu(!en was held. Students chose among seven candidates, and senior Marcia Niehaus received the honors. Wartburg ' s Barber Shop Quartet: l-r: The Rev. An Educational Policies Committee (EPC) decision in April 1980 began the phase-out of the Chrysalis pro- gram from the curriculum. Problems for Chrysalis originated in 1979 when Wart- burg Hall, home of the program, was declared a safety hazard. Dr. Herman Diers, former director of Chry- salis, said the problem was further complicated when the gender imbalance on the campus at the time was pressing for a relocation of students. At the time, the cost efficiency and native recruitment aspects of the Chrysalis program were being studied, Diers added. Implementation of the new general edu- cation program also loomed in the near future. All of these things came together toward the end of last year, Diers said. An EPC subcommittee examined the cost effec- tiveness, native recruitment, accomplishment of objec- tives and the possibility of staffing for the general edu- cation program and Chrysalis. Dr. Dan Thomas, former Chrysalis instructor, said, The report concluded that on every ground the pro- gram was strong, although there were doubts about the academic effectiveness of the program among non- Chrysalis students. Despite the findings by the subcommittee that the pro- gram be continued, the EPC recommended to the fac- ulty that the program be phased out during the 1980-81 school year. If a new general education program was adopted, the Chrysalis program could not continue. Chrysalis also provided for much more interaction be- tween students and professors. Another unique aspect of the program was based on discussion encouraging everyone to participate. Another feature of Chrysalis was the independent study. Students actually became responsible for shaping their own education, Diers said. Many of the elements of Chrysalis were incorpo- rated into the general education program to extend the unique experience which Chrysalis provided to even more of the people on campus. Chrysalis Ends . . . 26 . . Core Course Begin This fall marked the beginning of a new general education program at Wartburg, known as the Wartburg Plan. It includes foundational studies, which allow the student to feel the liveliness of liberal arts; experimental studies, which involve one fine arts or literature, one cross-cultural or foreign language, one science laboratory, and two activ- ities for physical well-being; and integrative studies, which require a faith and reflec- tion and a religion or philosophy course. Finally, there is the capstone course which may be integrated into the student ' s major. Altogether twelve to fifteen courses are needed to fulfill these requirements in the new plan. The foundational courses are Human Expression, Natural World, and Person and So- ciety. They are to encompass much of what is related to each field in order to lay a foundation on which the student may build. According to Dr. Herman Diers, an instruc- tor for Human Expression, they are tailor made for general education and attempt to capture the spirit of what they concern rather than a detailed analysis. Each course is headed by a team of professors, one or two from each related field. A lecture is held on Tuesday for the entire class. On Wednesdays and Thursdays the class meets in four or five separate sections. These sections meet as discussion groups, semi- nars, or lab periods. The sections provide opportunity for the students to explore fur- ther the material they have been assigned. yes n( Do you feel the foundational courses have given you a good educational base? 45 35 Do the instructors seem to have a good know- ledge of what they ' re teaching? 60 16 Do required studies for these courses take away study time from your other classes? 60 20 Have they been helpful in teaching the learning process? 31 44 Would you recommend continuing these re- quirments as they are now? 25 50 27 KATHRYN KOOB, WELCOME HOME Wartburg welcomed home one of its famous alumni on Feb. 12, 1981, as she returned from a 444-day stay as a hostage in Iran. Kathryn Koob, a ' 62 graduate, told of her experiences in captivity and expressed her thanks to America in a service of celebration and thanksgiving in Knights Gymnasium. She related the things that had kept her going through the days, weeks, and months of captivity. I kept re- membering my confirmation prom- ises, ' Be thou faithful unto death . . . ' and ' Lo, I am with you always ' . ' Other remembrances also gave her strength through her ordeal. Koob said she thought a lot about Wart- burg-the people, the experience- and contemplated how her Wart- burg years fit into her Iranian expe- rience. What impresses me most about Wartburg is growth— of spirit, heart and mind. She commented Wart- burg ' s faculty who, according to Koob, have the dedication to stu- dents and the willingness to share themselves and their experiences with students that is usually found only on the graduate level at some schools. Wartburg ' s faculty have a readiness to share everything they have. The growth available at Wartburg falls into two categories, said Koob. First is personal growth. You meet people here unlike people anywhere else. When being persecuted by Is- lamic students, Koob remembered a Moslem girl she had met at Wart- burg and realized that not all Islam- ics felt the same way her Iranian captors did. Wartburg also contributes to spiri- tual growth, said Koob. Many of you come from Christian homes. Christian communities, but the growing doesn ' t stop at con- firmation. With tears in her eyes, Kathryn Koob closed her talk by saying, My prayer for you is that you grow here and now but that it doesn ' t stop af- ter Wartburg. She reminded the au- dience composed of students, fac- ulty, Waverly people and elementary school children, that the setbacks which everyone experience are not a hindrance to growth, but only pruning because pruning makes a healthier plant. I thank God that Wartburg opened my mind so that for 444 days I could open my mind to my captors. Following the worship service. Pres- ident Robert Vogel presented Koob with a plaque depicting Old Main and the vigil light which burn(!d for a year and a day as a reminder to Wartburg people that the hostages were still not home. President Vogel said, The Light was for you, Kath- ryn. For the days, the weeks, and then the months— the light kept you in our prayers. Immediately following the presenta- tion, Koob was escorted outside, where she pulled the plug on the light, acknowledging that she was fi- nally home. The extinguishing was met by the applause of hundreds of mittens as onlookers lined the side- walks around Old Main. Late that afternoon, Koob fielded questions from students about her experience, impressions of current events and her plans for the future. Koob said she would have been willing to wait 10 or 15 years to be released, because she fully expected to come home. She told her guards that she was ready to see their chil- dren and grandchildren if it took that long to be freed. Students expressed their thanks to Koob for her willingness to serve and for being an inspiration even in captivity. She responded by saying, The limelight is not for me, it ' s for the Glory of God. 28 NEW FACES OLD PLACES Wartburg Publications celebrated its 75th anniversary this year. There were many activities, and one of them was the publication of Little Songs by Dr. G.J. Neuman, who taught at Wartburg for 53 years. Har- old Webster (BA63) vice president for public relations at the Northwes- tern National Bank in Minneapolis, spoke on Homecoming Weekend about Dr. Neumann, noting both the publication of the book and the 100th birthday of Old Main. Web- ster delivered the following mes- sage: I ' m very pleased to be includ- ed in these proceedings because my particular role here gives me an op- portunity to make an important point. Most of the alumni really do have a genuine fondness for the campus and its buildings, particularly Old Main. There ' s nothing wrong with that, but we ought to put it in per- spective. The truth is, buildings have no in- dependent significance whatever, not even Old Main. What counts is the quality and character of the people whom w e knew here and with whom we shared experiences in these buildings. At a time when we were very impressionable, those people put their stamp on us. When you think about it, the little visual images we carry in our minds are all about people, not buildings. For me Dr. Hertel will forever be as he was 20 years ago, telling us, Protoplasm is the physical basis of life, always moving his hands just so. Dr. Sandberg still looks at me through those thick glasses and tells me something I just wrote is fit for pouring over pancakes. That ' s a di- rect quote. I haven ' t been able to write anything sentimental since he told me that. But we ' re here to talk about Dr. Neu- mann and what memories we have of him. I owe him something for things he taught me about writing. I remember the very day when Dr. Neumann told us not to clutter up a story with useless elements. If you open up a story mentioning a loaded gun, he said, somewhere along the line you ' ve got to shoot it. That ' s good advice for a writer. Dr. Neumann understood the craft of writing. And he practiced it. I recall seeing an enormous stack of original limericks at his house one day. Good Stuff. Apparently he ' d been writing more than one a day for a very long time. I remember thinking at the time, this must be the world ' s largest collection of clean limericks. I knew that when he died he would probably leave be- hind a great treasure of stories and poems. And he most certainly did. Over in the campus library there must be several thousand poems and stories— all carefully crafted and neatly boxed away, maybe for- ever. One wonders what he intend- ed to do with them. Maybe just the satisfaction of putting the words on paper was enough. But we felt we couldn ' t just let them die. It was no small task for Miss Moehl and Mrs. Garland to winnow through and ed- it the poetry that comprises Dr. Neu- mann ' s Little Songs, which incident- ally Harold Kurtz named. The pro- cess took a long time and involved lots of hard work. How this book came to be is a fas- cinating story that we don ' t have time to tell. Let me just say that, due to some unique misunderstandings 30 Book Highlights Anniversary and logistical problems, the project ate up nearly 14 years. And if it hadn ' t been for Ema and Margaret and Bob and Marion Gremmels, if it hadn ' t been for a lot of support from people like Harold Kurtz and Omar Bonderud and a great host of other contributors, we never would have got it done. And that would have been a shame. Not because we think these poems are masterworks. They stand on their own well enough, and we don ' t have to apologize to anybody for them. However, there is a regu- larity about them and a kind of gen- tle good humor that some will re- gard as anachronistic. We know that. Not to have printed this book would have been a shame because we ' d have failed to acknowledge this man in a very important way. While there are some of us left who knew him first hand, it ' s important that we do something to express how we felt about him. It is all very well to name buildings after him, but this is personal. We needed to do this for ourselves. I think I speak for every student he ever had when I say that we all benefited greatly from the experience. He seemed genuinely to care about every single student in his classes, and I don ' t know anybody who doesn ' t feel that way. Aside from the classroom in- struction, I think we all appreciated Dr. Neumann as a man who seemed free of malice. I never heard him utter a single mean or ungracious remark in all the time I knew him. We just don ' t meet very many people like that. Anyhow, the book is done. I think he ' d have liked it. I think it carries his very best and most representa- tive work. President Vogel accepts a copy of Little Songs from Dr. Neumann ' s son, Arthur Neumann. 31 Communication Arts is hv. 10th largest major among studcmts at Wartburg College. Students are in- volved more in the differcmt typ( s of media this yea r than ever before. Paul Beck (junior), editor of the Trumpet, has expanded the paper from eight to 12 pages. Kim Bender (senior), KWAR station manager, has made many improvements in the format of the station and has commenced new longer hours. Nan Baker (senior). Fortress editor, says that she has had the largest staff that the yearbook has had in five years. Bruce Mills (senior), Castie editor, received many literary works from students other than English and Communication Arts students. Many were just interested in the idea of writing for a publication. This year Journalism finally turned full-time. The Journalism major has been on a part-time basis ever since Mr. Gremmels arrived in 1972. Dr. Robert Smith, chairman Mr. Robert Gren The Communication Arts Depart- ment offers a major in several con- centrations or emphases. With the arrival of Ms. Pamela Wegner, above theatre has been totally revived. Craig Green, financial aid director, took over theatre production with his minor in theatre from 1978. 32 FACULTY 33 37 39 44 Mrs. Cheryl Jacobsen Dr. John Fr(;ie 49 51 54 57 Mr. Earn(!st Oppcirmann 59 Ms. Nancy Schlv.y SPORTS 64 The 1980 Wurtburg Knights Football team: Row 1— equipment manager Tim L(! vis, alhlclic tr.iincis ' i ' om Sellen, Candy Funk, and Becky Westphalen, Neil Mullen, Paul Grotelueschen, Brian Daniclson. Here are their repli(!s: Coach Levick: The Warthur CoUeye haskethall season was similar to a ride on a roller coaster in an amusement park. It was a sf ason of . reat highs and agonizing lows — a season that saw some great VMctories but also some unexplained defeats. Some of the highlights of the season were outstanding victories ov er Simpson. Luther (twice) and Central on the road. Matt Ellis left his name in the record books. He finished the season as the third highest scorer in Wartburg basketball history with 1.406 points. His 18.5 scoring average over a total of 76 games is the best of any previous player at Wartburg. His 752 rt bounds placed him sixth on the all time rebounding list. Ellis was recognized as an All American player b - Basketball VVeekh ' magazine. Ellis was selected to the third team and becomes the secon d Wartburg plaver named to an All American team. Coach Oppermann: This xear women ' s golf marked the first time that Wartburg placed in the state tournament at Fort Dodge, winning third place. Sandy Buhrow was medalist in this meet as she was in four other meets. Women ' s golf is on the upswing. Baseball this year was highlighted by Paul Grote- lueschen, Charlie Fredrick and Reece Dodd being selected all-conference. The 10-4 conference record tied the conference champions of 1977 for sec:ond place. Ron Alexander (submitted by Coach Kurtt): Women ' s cross country was a new sport in 1980. Improve- ment during the year was a motivating factor and they finished the season at Ames in the AIAW Regional meet with an 8th place team finish. Liz Mitchell finished 18th out of 265 runners in the regional meet and was voted the team ' s most valuable runner for 1980. Coach Kurtt: The men ' s team showed a great deal of improvement during 1980. They were team champions at the Central and Dubuque Invitational meets and finished third at the Grinnell Invitational. Doug Rogers finished 5th in the NCAA Division III Regional with a record of 24:18 in the 8.000 meter race. He finished 23rd in the National meet and became Wartburg ' s second cross country All-American. Coach Bishop: The 1980-81 golf team was young and inexperienced. Finishing fifth in the conference was not as high as desired, but was very respectable. It was a pleasure to work with the young golfers of Dan Unmacht. Scott Klever and Pete Steinhauer. We will miss the old timers of coach Mark Nuss, Beav Dave LJnmacht and Randv Stanek. Congratulations to Dan Unmacht, who was voted the most valuable golfer. Coach Canfield: The men ' s tennis team played their best tennis to place second at the Iowa Conference Tennis Tournament. All seven entries earned medals. Players involved included Carlos Ramirez, Matt Harms, Fernando Ramirez, Byron Allmandinger, Tim Kurtt, Owen Greenough. Doubles included Carlos Ramirez and Matt Harms, Fernando Ramirez and Byron Allmandinger, and Tim Kurtt and Jeff Overson. Wartburg football of 1980 had many victories but not in the score board. The 2-7 season saw too many injuries and fumbles to be a winning season. Yet, Wartburg can be proud of the attitude and continuous determination of this fine group of young men. Team captains were Lee Camp, Randy Stanek and Bob Reiter. Duane Randall was voted most valuable player, and All Conference selctions were Bob Reiter and Randy Stanek. Coach Liz Wuertz: We are growing and getting better. A very exciting season this year; nine indoor records were broken, and 13 outdoor records were broken. We placed first and third in the high jump at the State meet. 89 STAFF 91 Who could feel anything but good about this past year at Wartburg College ' -President Robert Vogel Vogel Returns Home •rH 03 A small John Dcore tractor sits on his desk. It re- minds him daily of his family, of his father— a farmer. His coming back to Wartburg over a year ago reminds him of coming home. And War- tburg ' s 14th President, Robert Vogel, has devel- oped feelings on campus and throughout the Wartburg Community as one family, as a body of the church. Coming home to Wartburg after graduating in 1956, President Vogel wanted to be part of cam- pus Vdv. as much as his time and energy per- mitted, and he and his wife, Sally, have become part of the campus. They were loyal fans of t he Knights, attended many music events. Artist Se- ries and numerous other activities. President Vogel said, I ' m so proud to attend a music event or cheer on the Knights because Wartburg College has a unique quality of pro- grams with students, faculty and administration. Within Wartburg, there exists the Wartburg Community, who share a commitment of sup- port, dedication, and loyalty. President Vogel said the Wartburg Community includes the people of Waverly, who daily support the college; the people of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area, who are accepting Wartburg as their private college through support in the Design for Tomorrow; the students on campus; and all the alumni. As President, Vogel sees his role to represent the college wherever he goes both off and on campus. His love and dedication for Wartburg and all the people associated with it explain why he is will- ing to sacrifice to make Wartburg stronger, and willing to do what he can for Wartburg College. Advice to the graduating seniors? President Vogel responded: Wartburg graduat(!S art; good neighbors. They measure the value of life and the benefit it brings to people and the community. Seniors should join congregations where they will live, make contri- butions to community life, enjoy their work, and marry for life, which will be one single contribu- tion to them and their community. As for other students, Vogel hopes to see every- one back in the fall. He would like the global in- ternational relationships to grow. As a college of the church, we belong to a global family, he said. Phase II of the Wartburg Design for Tomorrow national funding topped the $2 million mark this year. The total pledged toward a $4.3 million goal is $2,104,367, according to Director Steve West. Phase II, which was launched in 1979, will provide facilities for the Business Administration and Economics De- partment and a new campus book- store. Once a month students were able to put on their dancing shoes, to bands that included SAW- BUCK. SPENCER, and Jim Stern from Wa- terloo. During the week, there were programming events which provided classroom fun out- side of class. Various speakers were brought in and spoke on different topics including rape, insurance;, photography. Traditional events for SAC included Brother Sister weekend, which brought over 125 siblings to campus. Winter Carni- val, and Outfly events. Recreational events included a skiing trip to LaCrosse, WI. and over spring break stu- dents headed south to Florida for a week stay in Daytona Beach. Student coffeehouses were popular again this year. The spring coff eehouse featured President Vogel and his sidekick. Kirk Vogel, as MC s. The game room and TV room allowed stu- dents to take a break from studying. The close of the year led to the selection of a new student activities director as Jan Crowley left to be married. 116 117 119 120 (acfiui S( ' qi;iTin,iii. Drli I ' ntlrtl, Martha Woodruff. The committee, chaired by ju- nior Carla Stahlberg, raised $3500 for the fight against Mus- cular Dystrophy. It was a Wartburg Community effort, according to Stahlberg. Joe ' s Knight-Hawk hosted the second annual MD Bar Night. Students helped raise over $500 that evening. Waverly Mayor Clarence Wickham proclaimed March 16-22 as Muscular Dystrophy week to begin the marathon. Whipped cream pies in the faces of President Vogel, Dr. Donald Roiseland, Dr. William Shipman, Dr. Augie Waltmann, Dr. Chris Schmidt, junior Mary Holtapp, and senior Bill Nolte brought in more money. The main event was the 24- hour dance marathon. More than 20 couples danced the full 24 hours and helped reach the $3500 total through pledges from students, faculty and friends. KWAR provided the music. 134 137 The 60-piece Wartburg College Concert Band left on April 20 for its third European tour. This year ' s trip took the band, under the direction of Dr. Robert E. Lee, to England, the Neth( rlands. France. Switzerland. Austria. West and East Germany and Denmark. The band performed three programs: one of sacred music used at church services, a symphonic program and an adaptation of the John Philip Sousa program presented earlier this year in Waverly and Cedar Falls and aired in August over the Iowa Public Broadcasting Network. In addition to performing 20 concerts, the; studtmts took a May Term course, entitled Tour with fht; Arts. under the supervision of Dr. Lee and Dr. Maynard Anderson of Wartburg ' s Music Department. The course involved attendance at the opera, concerts, and dramatic presentations plus the visual arts and a study of architecture in major European centers. All the staff, especially Kim Bender, Karen Petersen, and Nan Baker. My friends who listened, my floor, C3N, and to my sister. Ruth, who helped the most by sticking with me and helping to the final day. Thank you Barb McNeil and Doug Brown for letting me stay with you and for storing my things. And to Mr. Gremmels, without whose advice and help the 1981 Fortress would never be. Thank you to our yearbook representative, Bob Welsch, for sticking with us. Your help was appreciated. Congratulations to all the seniors. I hope the 1981 For- tress will help you remember your last year on campus. Good luck to next year ' s editor, Karen Petersen; you ' ll need it. Thanks, everyone, Deb Willing Spring-May Term Editor 208
