What do 1 1 00 students do after classes are over? Contrary to what parents are told, every spare minute until finals week is not spent studying. True, Wartburg isn ' t the Las Vegas of the Midwest, but with a little help from people like the Student Activities and Artist Series Committees students manage to be entertained. After creeping out of the suitcase college syndrome it suffered in the mid-1970 ' s, Wartburg provided students with many alternatives to studying to usher in the ' 80 ' s. Comedians and hypnotists were a hot item on campus. Alex Cole, the Kid Comic, came en route to an audition for TV ' s Saturday Night Live in October. He was followed by hypnotists John- Ivan Palmer and Russ Burgess and comedian Ron Douglas. President Jellema added a new line of squash jokes to fill the comedic gap in the interim. The Artist Series brought a varied group of artists to Neumann Auditorium ' s stage. Da, a Broadway hit, opened the Series to a nearly full house. The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the only full-time professional chamber orchestra in North America, followed with an evening of music. The Claude Kipnis Mime Theatre brought silence to the stage and thrilled their audience. The season closed with the Canadian Brass, a brass quintet, and Gilbert and Sullivan ' s The Mikado, presented by a national opera troupe. Opera a La Carte.

The Gdanski Medical Academy Choir joined the Wartburg Choir as part of a concert they presented on the Wartburg stage. Damascus, Living Water, Rainbow of Promise and Hosanna all visited to give Christian concerts. The Film Series presented classic films like Psycho, California Suite, They Shoot Horses, Don ' t They?, Dr. Zhivago and Little Big Man. One of the big entertainment events of the year was the somewhat annual Michael Johnson concert. Unfortunately, Mike couldn ' t make it for the show. Mark Gaddis, a songwriter singer from the Twin Cities, came down to fill in. Not all talent was imported. Junior Bill Nolte, local stand-up comic, the Pseudo-Andrews Sisters and the team of Tony Frank and Craig Green were all familiar faces on coffeehouse programs.
