Dr. Samuel Epstein — a Nov. 7 academic advising session. Time was reserved for professors to meet with students in their major areas to discuss departmental programs and cooperative education. — a Nov. 28 convocation by Dr. Galen Hull, consultant to the State Department. Hull ' s address was Foreign Aid: Does It Get to the Poorest of the Poor? He told the audience that foreign aid often gets tied up serving government officials ' self-interest while the poor majority of the country are not included in the benefits. — a Dec. 5 presentation by Dr. Fred Ribich, chairman of the Psychology Department and director of the Teacher Learning Center. Ribich discussed the nature and purpose of student evaluations of instruction. — a Jan. 9 lecture discussion by Hawley, Frick and Heine on the state of affairs in Afghanistan. The three explained the Soviet mind set and the possible directions the crisis may take. — a Jan. 23 convocation by Frank Mankiewicz, president of National Public Radio. Mankiewicz revealed the role of the Iowa caucuses in the national political scene. — a Jan. 30 worship service led by Pastor Maynard Dorow, a missionary to Korea. The service, part of Wartburg ' s Spiritual Emphasis Week, included a discussion of the missionary fields. — a Feb. 6 convocation by Rabbi Jay B. Goldburg of the Temple B ' Nai Jeshurun in Des Moines. He spoke on Spiritual Insights into Facing Life ' s Crises and offered thoughtful considerations and meditations into those problems. — a Feb. 1 1 address by Charles Lutz, former administrator for the Lutheran Church ' s draft counseling program. Lutz discussed Why the Draft? and outlined differences and alternatives to the government ' s draft proposals. — a Feb. 13 presentation on Islam and the Middle East by Dr. Basheer K. Nijim, chairman of the department of geography at the University of Northern Iowa. He explained the political geography of oil, the question of a U.S. military involvement in the gulf region, religion as a political tool, sliding standards of judgment and the pitfall of homogenizing heterogeneous peoples. — a Feb. 20 Ash Wednesday Communion Service. Pastor Ed Kruse of Grace Lutheran in Waterloo delivered the message and the Wartburg Choir and Chapel Choir presented special music. — a Feb. 27 convocation by Denis Goulet, professor of Education for Justice at the University of Notre Dame. Technology for Development: Can Values Shape Policy? was the topic for Goulet ' s Ujamaa Week address. — a March 5 convocation by Dr. Samuel Epstein, professor of occupational and environmental medicine at the School of Public Health, University of Illinois. Epstein is the author of The Politics of Cancer and painted a bleak picture of the future of cancer prevention. — a March 1 2 Community Time concert by Damascus, a nationally known Christian rock band. The group also presented an evening concert that day. — a March 1 7 address by the Rev. M. William Howard, Jr., president of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. Howard was one of the ministers permitted to visit with hostages held in the American embassy in Tehran, Iran, during the Christmas holidays. He appeared as part of Black Awareness Culture Organization Week. — a March 25 convocation by Maggie Kuhn, founder of the Gray Panthers, an advocacy movement for the elderly. Kuhn discussed Aging in a New Age and had the audience doing her panther growl before her speech was completed. — an April 2 Holy Week Music Convocation. The meeting included selections by the Wartburg Choir, Band, Chamber Orchestra and Castle Singers. rfter Menninger
