In an effort to expand the computer science program, a new course, Structured Programming in PL I, was added to the Mathematics Department ' s offerings. Department members spent time in the research of papers. Dr. Beck co-authored a paper which was presented to the American Mathematical Society in California, Dr. Bridgman presented a paper on the Continuity of a Two-Variable Rational Function at the Origin and Dr. William Waltmann published a paper entitled, Computer Use in Linear Algebra. Also sponsored by the department were lectures by Dr. Warren Boe of the University of Iowa and Dr. Alex Kleiner, visiting lecturer in mathematics. To further interest in mathematics and to develop an appreciation of its power and beauty; to provide an organiza- tion for recognition of outstanding achievement in the study of mathematics; and to bring together students and faculty in order to present and discuss topics related to the field of mathematics, is the purpose of Kappa Mu Epsilon. To fulfill these goals, monthly meetings were held at which guest speakers expanded on topics related to mathematical fields. During Berufung Week, Kappa Mu Epsilon co-sponsored with the Mathematics Department two meetings featuring speakers from various math-related occupations. Besides their annual Christmas party and annual initiation banquet, club members attended a picnic at Conservation Park during May Term, inviting faculty members and their families to share lunch and games. 1 26 Academics
