In part, this growing diversity in life is a reflection of the specialization in knowledge and in education. To be an educated man no longer denotes participation in a common, circumscribed body of knowledge. Though the total of extant knowledge has multiplied many times, that part of it which everybody knows has increased much more slowly . . . 2 . . . Society cannot afford to imitate the university, where communication between departments is either perfunctory or nonexistent. Outside the university, the world becomes smaller in terms of interdependence while it becomes larger in terms of the difficulty of communication between heterogeneous groups and diverse individuals. It is stimulating to associate with people who disagree with you. It is pleasant to live among your kind of people. It is enlightening to relate to persons whose backgrounds differ from your own. This is the essence of diversity. This is a factor in education, in being led forth from provincialism to a civilized world view. Wartburg has been moving toward diversity, the kind of diversity in background and orientation which can arouse curiosity and broaden experience. Such a process is bound to create fears, suspicion, and insecurity. It also holds out the hope for creative development. The Christian faith is supportive of such growth. There is neither Jew nor Greek, neither bond nor free, neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus . . . It was a fine group to coach, said head coach Buzz Levick. They were easy to work with and they adapted to different situations readily. Above all, they had the determination to not let our winning streak get broken. 137 The Knights played a return engagement in Kansas City, meeting tough Augustana in the first round. The track team ran in only two duals, winning over Central and losing to Luther. Otherwise, the Knights competed in several multi- team meets, recording perhaps their best performance in the MAC running at Indianola. Wartburg placed third behind perennial champion Luther and William Penn. 146 Mark Guthrie put the shot 51 feet 9Va inches to set the only new outdoor track record, but Jim Ellefson tied a record when he ran the high hurdles in :14.9 at the MAC meet. Ellefson ' s win at Indianola was one of three for the Knights. Steve Hotz is the IIAC 880 champion after being clocked 1 :56.9, and the mile relay team of Larry Hilden, Dave Foltz, Steve Dewey and Steve Hotz outdistanced the rest of the league with a 3:24.0 time. A sweep over Upper Iowa on the last day of the season lifted the Knights out of the league cellar and won them sixth place. The top baseball performance was turned in by first baseman Paul Eberline, who hit .618 in 12 MAC games to win the batting championship and set a new conference record. Eberline wound up .450 in all games, followed by leftfielder Larry Nelson, who hit .373. 149 150 The tennis team placed the highest of any Wartburg spring sports team, finishing third in the league, after a 5-10 dual meet season. An expanded schedule during the regular season took the team on a trip to Illinois. Dennis Harrington reached finals in the number- one singles slot, Tim Olson in the number three, Harrington and Rich Wahl in the number one doubles and Olson and Curt Tangen in the number two doubles — all vied against Luther in the finals. Steve Wohlwend recorded a hole-in- one in the Knights ' final home meet against Upper Iowa, but he couldn ' t duplicate it at the conference tournament. As a result, the Knights, who also were fifth a year ago, remained there. Doug Schultz was Wartburg ' s top golfer with a 158 in 36 holes.
