Returning were six lettermen, including Tom Turner at 145, who was an Iowa Conference champion; and second-place finishers Mick Ketchum at 137, Greg Slager at 177 and Dean Knight at 191 or heavyweight. However, pros- pects were bright with junior Dave Wolff, out for the first time, and sophomore Fran Buckel. The Knights posted an 8 — 6 record, a respectable performance, considering the lack of depth in the squad and ineligibilities and injuries. Contributing to the team ' s performance was Mike Ketchum, who placed fourth in the NAIA tournament. 1969 SEASON ' S RECORD Wartburg Opponents Augustana 8 22 Buena Vista 24 11 Grinnell 28 9 Loras 22 11 Westmar 15 16 Dubuque 11 20 Luther 7 26 South Dakota 25 5 Morningside 15 21 Upper Iowa 8 22 St. Olaf 29 5 Carleton 17 16 Winona State 22 15 Central 34 5 Quadrangular fourth place All Lutheran Tournament fifth place IIAC Tournament fourth place 26 . . . BASKETBALL TEAM— FRONT ROW: Paul Briins, Jim Barkema, Cliff Cornelius, G. E. Buenning, V ' irg Erickson, Tom Manchester. BACK ROW: Mr. Lewis Buzz Levick, coach; Fred Grawe, Con- nie Hellerich, Gary Konarske, Derry Brunscheen, Jim Clapp, Keith Lazar. Wartburg Has Finest Team in School History This season Wartburg produced the finest basket- ball team in its history. The Knights finished with a 25 — 1 over-all record and won the Lutheran Welfare Tournament, the Iowa Conference Championship and District 15 Playoffs, which qualified the team to play in the NAIA Championship Tournament in Kansas City. Twenty-five basketball wins in a row is the story of victory-minded Coach Lewis Buzz Levick. Con- tributing to the success of Wartburg ' s basketball team was consistency. Before every game Coach Levick had the difficult task of explaining to his players that the opposition would try to knock the Knights off the top, but each time Wartburg stayed at the top. In the starting five, the essential skills of all as- pects of the game were represented by the rebound- ing of D. D. Brunscheen and Cliff Cornelius, the shooting of Tom Manchester and G. E. Buenning and the defensive work of Virg Erickson. The top re- serves, Jim Barkema, Paul Bruns and Fred Grawe, exhibited the spark which oftentimes led to one of the Knights ' big spurts. In spite of individual talents, team members played together as a unit to achieve success for the team and for the school. 1969 SEASON ' S RECORD Wartburg ° Westmar 90 kJkJ Gustavus Adolphus 80 O Augsburg 87 69 ° Macalester 59 46 Winona State 50 47 Buena Vista 103 61 Dubuque 64 57 William Penn 71 46 Central 66 49 Simpson 99 64 Buena Vista 80 56 Briar Cliff 91 51 Loras 72 55 Upper Iowa 79 62 Luther 83 60 Upper Iowa 82 69 Luther 84 73 Central 59 58 Simpson 81 64 Dubuque 69 63 William Penn 88 84 Lutheran Welfare Tournament first place Carthage 97 81 Luther 87 53 District 15 Playoffs Iowa Wesleyan 68 58 Iowa Wesleyan 92 71 NAIA Tournament Marvland State 90 99 non-conference 28 . . .
