' We re through talking about rebuilding. We ve reached the point where the onl way to judge im- provement is by the number of games we win, said Coach Lee Bondhus. The rebuilding program resulted in a 7 — 1 — 1 overall rec ord, an Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship and holders of thirteen new school records. Seven of these marks were set by running back Gary Nelson and quarterback Paul Specht, who led the Knights dramatic climb from last to first place for the first time since 1959. Balance is the word which most accurately de- scribes Wartburg ' s attack this season. The offensive yardage was distributed between rushing (1605 yards) and passing (1219 yards). The defense finished on top in the conference, as it registered three shut-outs. It is impossible to single out one or two key play- ers making the difference between success and defeat. It is impossible to explain or understand the spirit and wonderful attitude which this team had, said Bondhus. This was the year our players decided to win, and that ' s exactly what they did. 1968 SEASON ' S RECORD Wartburg Opponents ° Lea 7 0 Simpson 27 27 William Penn 36 0 Luther 20 7 Dubuque 27 14 Central 24 14 Buena Vista 14 0 Upper Iowa 33 13 ° Westmar 14 23 non-conference 22 . . . I DUBUQUE FANS wait anxiously as Wartburg ' s offense readies for action, but are disappointed at a 27 — 14 final score. INCHES AWAY from tfie goal, quarterback Paul Specht strains toward the end zone in a vain attempt for the touchdown. PUSHING FOR the first down, Westmar loses control of the ball through the jarring defensive action of Bob Brown.
