Dedication Dr. John W. Bachman The crowd — a nebulous, ever-changing mass — pulsating, at times forward, at times back, yet always alive and straining toward goals often vague and ill-defined. From the midst emerges the figure symbolizing the entire academic community. It is with pride that we dedicate this year ' s Fortress to Dr. John W. Bachman, president of Wartburg College, and leader of the crowd. These past months have been filled with acquaintances begun tentatively yet buttressed with a strength afforded by mutual commitment to common goals. The Image of Wartburg College presented to those outside its immediate boundaries is the responsibility of all students, faculty members, administrators and staff personnel; yet it is especially so of the college president, hie is ultimately held accountable for adherence to high standards in all phases of college activities. Wartburg is privileged to have leadership of such caliber In Its academic, spiritual and human struggles. The pursuit of truth never has been or shall be an easy one; but In and beyond thought and Imagination, education at Wartburg College should liberate men and extend our vision because we believe that at the center of the universe is a living commitment to truth and justice. — From the Inaugural Address. —CAE

Foreword 1964-1965 — a school year that was. Stop and think about the motley group of activities that made that year. An enthusiastic freshman class, the largest In Wartburg history; a successful HHomecomlng, bringing back hundreds of alumni, a committee dreaming up innovations and a successful banquet in the new Student Union, which was also dedicated that weekend; then the inauguration, the first one in nineteen years, bringing to Wartburg dignitaries from all over the nation; the dances in the Union with live bands; a football game that brought the crowd mobbing onto the field to see a victorious team carry off a joyful coach; and on goes the list. But the most important thing in making a successful year is the crowd, composed of everyone who claims connection to Wartburg ' s academic conquests. And it is you, the crowd, that have given the theme to this yearbook. For the theme is you, the crowd, and it is to this crowd ' s leader that the book is dedicated. We, the staff of the 1965 Fortress, now invite you, the crowd, to view your activities — the activities of a successful and already past 1964-1965 Wartburg school year.
