WITH ESCORT John Thalacker at her side and Marv Ackerman, Fortress editor, with the microphone, Mary Ann expresses her thanks to the staff. MISS MARY ANN HERDER ... is 1965 Fortress Queen IT ' S ALL smiles for date John Thalacker when Mary Ann is named queen. Her first reaction is, Did I hear that right? Basketball games are great. Especially when you know you ' re going out afterwards to celebrate a friend ' s birth- day. This is all Mary Ann hHerder knew when she, her date and two friends went to the Central game December 5. Little did she know that at the halftime of the game she would be crowned as the 1965 Fortress Queen, At halftime Marvin Ackerman, Fortress editor, and Linda Morse, associate editor, walked to the microphone. Mary Ann recognized their presence merely by popping another bite of popcorn into her mouth. The usual introductions were given, and Mary Ann still continued to eat her popcorn. She was unconcerned. Then the announcement came: The 1965 Fortress Queen is Miss Mary Ann hierder. Mary Ann nudged her date, John Thalacker, and asked him if she had heard right. Now the secret was out. Now she knew why she had to get dressed up so they could celebrate after the game. As a result of her being elected Fortress Queen a photo essay of Mary Ann was sent to the of ficials of the Drake Relays, held each spring in Des Moines. Candidates from various colleges and universities throughout the United States are selected to be present at the Relays and to vie for the crown. hialftime was over. This time Mary Ann was too excited to worry about her popcorn. All she could do was sit and try to watch the rest of the game.
