PETREE, WHOSE COURAOE AND DEDICATION MADE US READY TO FACE ANY HARDSHIP THAT LAY AHEAD. 1 Crump XD DG?-Ll 5047? COMMANDER NOEL H. PETREE, JR. Commander Petree was com issioncd an Ensign in 1956 after graduating from the University of North Carolina in the ROTC program. Following flight training at Pensacola and Corpus Christi he served in VF-l3 and VF-76 flying FLD Skyrey, F9F Cougar, and FAB Phantom aircraft. He served as Squadron and Air Group Landing and signalling Officer on board the USS ESSEX CCVA-91, USS SHANCRI-LA ICVA-387 and USS FORRESTAL CCVA-593. f He then attended the Naval Postgraduate School at 9 Monterey for advanced training in Air-Ocean Environment. Hilfnext two tours were at sea as Electronic Warfare! CIC Officer on the USS ALBANY KCC-103 and as Navigator on the USS NEWPORT NEWS CCA-1487. Washington was next where he served as Operations Directorate of the Or- ganization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He then com- pleted a tour as Executive Officer on the USS HARRY YARNELL CDLG-175. As commanding officer of the Warrington since June, 1972, he guided the ship and crew through gun- fire support off of Quang Tri, shelling of coastal de- fence sites in North Vietnam and finally two very damaging explosions.
