Lieutenant Commander De Cristofaro en- listed in the Navy in 1936, and after a tour of duty on destroyers was appointed to the U, S, Naval Academy where he was graduated as an Ensign in 1941. During World War Il he served in the Gunnery Departments of the USS WASHINGTON and the USS ALABAMA in the North Atlantic and Pacific Campaigns. Following the war he was designated a Navy Aviator' and served with Patrol Squadron 47 in China, Japan, and the Philippines. In 1950 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for service in Korea. Lieutenant Commander De Cristofaro served a two year tour of duty as Assistant Professor of Naval Science at the University of Rochester, after which he was ordered as Executive Officer of the USS WARRINGTON in August 1953. With his wife, Josephine, and their four children: James, Gene, Ellen and Anne, he makes his home at Middletown, Rhode Island. lieutenant Commander S. De Cristotaru V . 1...--M , 1,1 Nia. Before entering the Navy, he attended Jordan College at Menominee, Michigan, and Marquette Uni- versity at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he received his B. S. Degree in Business Ad- ministration. Upon entering the Navy on 12 June 1941, he first reported on board the USS OKLA- HOMA where he served until that eventful day of 7 December 1941, in Pearl Harbor. After the sinking of the OKLAHOMA, he was then assigned to the USS SOUTH DAKOTA where he served for the remainder of World War Il. After the War he served on the USS WISCONSIN and later in the Anti-Submarine Development Detachment at Key West Florida. Weldhng U.S. Navy While at Key West, Commander Weidling married Miss Phyllis Jane Baybutt, who was a former navy nurse. They now proudly boast of a daughter, Nancy Ann. On his return to sea duty, Commander Weidling served as Executive Officer of the USS BRISTOL fDD857Q, after which he re- ported on board the USS WARRINGTON QDD843j and relieved Commander Pride C. Brown Jr. as Commanding Officer on 14 February 1953. Commander Weidling holds the Navy Unit Citation and is authorized to wear the Ameri- can Theater, European Theater, PacifiC Theater Q14 starsy, the Philippine Liberation Q2 starsj, the American Defense, and World War ll Victory Service Ribbons.
