Providing for many basic necessities of life as well as the means toward welfare and recreation is the prime function of S Division. From its over- crowded office, where the bulk of the paper work for Disbursing, Ship's Store, Commissary, and general Storekeeping is done, the boys are busily engaged in computing the pay, crediting leave rations, ordering the many items for the Ship's Store, computing the profits from the Store for the Welfare and Recreation Fund, ordering the victuals, and ordering the tools and equipment that keep our ship in top appearance and shape. This is a large part of the functions of the office force. While the boys are busily engaged working in the office, in the pantry, galley the Stewards and Cooks are engaged in preparing the nourishing meals and baking the bread and pies that are enjoyed daily by the crewg in the laundry the Ship's Servicemen apply the formula that has been taught to them at Ship's Servicemen School in the attempt to get the last grain of dirt out of the crew's clothes, in the Sick Bay where the Men of Medicine so artfully and skill- fully ease our aches and pains and mend our woundsg in the barber shop our master craftsman neatly trims out hair for liberty and inspections. No longer can this phrase hold true. One is lost for words when going below by the many gauges and valves of black and white that stand out. Never before has asys- tem of propulsion been used with such economy of fuel and space. The system of lines is an accomplished dream. What stands behind this are the men ofthe Engineering Department, headed today by LTJG TABORSKY, Engineering Officer. The department moves witha sound organization. Assistance from a Main Propulsion Officer, Damage, Control Officer, and Electrical Officer comes through their over-all super- vision of their own divisions: the Nl and B , the A and R and E respectively. M and B have in their spaces all boilers, engines, gears and generators. lt holds responsibility for all systems of steam, fuel, lube oil, feed water, drainage and ballast. A and R on its side has charge of all auxiliary equipment and the hull of this ' ' ' h t are ship. This includes all systems ta necessary for controlling fires or underwater d a e. And E , the electrical gang, con- am g trols interior communications and the ships electrical equipment. Each gang is entirely separate from the other. As a whole though, the Engineering Del artment is classified as strickly the E P L . Gang. They work as a team. Only as the BT s . i - ' qboilermenj, EN s Cenginemenj, FP s qs ip- fttersj, and EM Qelectriciansj man their 1 spaces, does there exist a separation. Luckily Cannes was one of the last ports on the schedule for the Warrington, for some of the excitement helped counter-act the Land of the Bikinis. The French Riviera extends down from Toulon and Menton on the Italian coast, including Monte Carlo, Nice, Golfe Juan, Cannes and J uan-Les- Pins. The beaches were beautiful naturally, strolling down La Croisette promenade by the luxurious hotels, Majestic, Grand, and Carlton, and maybe stopping in for a little beer or cognac seemed like paradise. Some of the capitalists spent their time in Nice, which was only an hour's drive up the coast. At long last, the editor found his golfing paradise, but even out there it was hard to keep one's eye on the ball.
