April 11 Two FBI agents were shot and killed in Miami while they were investigating a drug dealing organization The Deadliest Year A total of 1,948 people have been killed in accidents involving scheduled and chartered aircraft in 1985—the worst year in aviation history. The five most fatal: ■ Feb. 19: An Iberia Air Lines Boeing 727 crashed i nto a television antenna on Mount Oiz, Spain. All 148 aboard were killed. Airline officials said the pilot, using a faulty map, was flying off course and too low. ■ June 23: An Air-India Boeing 747 apparently exploded over the Atlantic Ocean off Ireland, killing all 329 on board. Callers claiming to be with Sikh extremist groups took credit for planting a bomb, but the organizations denied responsibility. Your Future ■ Aug. 2: A Delta Air Lines Lockheed 1D1011 crashed while landing in a thunderstorm at Dallas-Ft. Worth, killing 137. Circumstances suggest wind shear. ■ Aug. 12: A Japan Air Lines Boeing 747 hit a mountain, killing 520 of524 aboard. The plane’s tail had suffered structural damage, possibly due to faulty repair of a rear bulkhead. ■ Dec. 12: A chartered Arrow Air DC-8 crashed on takeoff from Gander, Newfoundland, killingj all 256 on board. Cause yet unknown.
