TOWARD A NEW ORIZON N COUNTV Organizations JUST HANGIN' AROUND .. . 5 WHS MAKES IT HAPPEN On April 13,1985, a volleyball-a-thon was held for Jeff Spiropoulos, a Senior at WHS. It was held to help defray the cost of the medical bills accumulated while he was hospitalized for cancer. The volleyball-a-thon was held in the Fieldhouse from noon to midnight, with twenty teams participating. Each game lasted fifteen minutes. Pledges were collected by the number of games a team played. A microwave raffle was held and concessions were sold to help raise money for Jeff. The games went well and everyone clearly enjoyed the competition. The students of WHS pulled together and maded this a truly memorable event. All who par- ticipated were winners! ADMINISTRATION The office staff's work was more challenging this year because of the purchase of an IBM computer. Included with the purchase came a computerized attendance system. This year, a bond issue was voted on and passed in February to allow for expansion of the high school to relieve overcrowding. Many organizations also were in this year's parade. Afterwards, everyone assembled in the fieldhouse for an hour of cheering and excitement at the pep rally. The Queen Coronation started at 6:30 in the junior high gym. Everyone awaited the big mo- ment. Finally, Beth Schaumberg was crowned the 1984 Homecoming Queen. Afterwards, the fans headed for the football field to see the kick- off of the Warrenton vs. Montgomery City Homecoming game. The 5th Annual Variety Show was a bit different in 1984. The show was giv- en the theme Broadway Review . In order to participate, one had to have a skit related to Broadway productions. Many participated in the variety show with skits such as Nothin' Like a Dame , Puttin' on the Ritz , and There's No Business Like Show Busi- ness . The skits and actors were hu- morous and entertaining to all ages. In all the show was successful and will continue to entertain audiences in the future. Refresh- ments were served and everyone enjoyed themselves for the re- mainder of the dance. 75 BARNYARD On May 17th, the FFA had its annual Barnyard. Members brought in several different animals. There were chickens, sheep, pigs, puppies, cats with kittens, a horse, a turtle, a goose, and a turkey. Students of Holy Rosary and our school came to visit throughout the day. The Kiddie Kampus even walked over to pet the animals. Cookies and Kool-Aid were served and the kids really enjoyed themselves. The evening began at 8:00 p.m. and lasted till 12 midnight. The air was filled with romance and the feeling of one being on a deserted island. One found bottles of all kinds with scrolls inside to re- mind them of their memorable night. Floating candles in a sea of water lit the evening with sounds of music provided by B.G. Sound Co. A grass hut was the scene of the refreshments of finger sandwiches and foamy green and pink punch with a straw holding a parasol. Coronation was held at 9:30 with the crowning of Babette Eberhart as Queen and Robert O'Donnell as King. The dance remained active right up to the stroke of midnight when everyone departed. The Student Council is a very active and responsible group in the high school. Fifteen members make up the student government. They consist of two representatives and the president from each class, a secretary treasurer, a vice-president, and a president. Every year, the Student Council participates in many activities. This year they decorated a Christmas tree that was placed in the library. Flowers were solf for Valentine's Day to raise money for a scholarship given away in the spring. In March, they assisted the Red Cross by recruiting high school students and teachers to give blood. This year ap- proximately 45 students and teachers gave blood. In April, they sponsored ths Scholar Quiz. The students competed with other schools to see who retained the most general knowledge. Our team placed second out of a total of nine teams. Peer Counseling is an organization set up with counselors who are certified and have a semester of training. Their main objec- tive is to communicate with students who may have problems, such as substance abuse. Peer Counseling was set up for stu- dents who are unable to talk to counselors or teachers. This chapter has helped many students at Warrenton High School. SADD is an organization founded by an Health Educator, Robert Anastas. It all began when a couple of his students were killed in a drinking and driving accident. He decided to conduct a few days of study in his health classes concerning the drinking-driving issue as it relates to teens. SADD- Students Against Driving Drunk- started to really go over in September 1982, when Mr. Anastas left his job and traveled to different high schools to inform kids of the danger and effects of drinking and driving. This year the Warrenton High School has taken up the program and they Plan on electing officers next year. SADD held a sign up week to get more members and throughout the year they've held bake sales and assemblies. So far the SADD organization has been a great success. s A D D 87 Soils Team Goes National The Future Farmers of America is a very active club. Throughout the year the club did various activities. They held their annual slave auction in No- vember. To celebrate FFA week they had a volleyball game, went roller skat- ing, and had a breakfast at Red Wheel. For educational activities they at- tended the Farm Show in St. Louis and visited the Moorman Seed Plant in Illi- nois. They also attended the State and National Conventions and participated in contests. When the year drew to a close they sponsored the children's barnyard and their annual banguet. Activities didn't end when school let out. They spon- sored a children's barnyard and worked in concession stands at the Fruhlingfest. Members also showed livestock at the Warren County Fair. Mums For Sale This year's Future Homemakers of America participated in various activi- ties. In October they sold Homecoming mums and marched in the parade. They had a bake sale and sold stuffed animals. In February they celebrated FHA week. For their recreational activi- ties they had a bar-b-gue and went bowling. The Industrial Arts Club kept up its tradition by putting up and decorating a tree in the high school office at Christmas time. The tree and the office decorations have been a tradition for the past nine years. On April 10, the IA Club visited two businesses- General Motors and Binkley. They attended Dis- trict and XState Contests with one member, Kevin Klopcic, qualifying for state. This is quite an achievement since only 25 contestants are sleeted from each district. Kevin received a two rating at state. Mary Roehrs was made an honorary member of the Industrial Arts Club this year. She was present- ed with a jacket and a certificate. Builders At Work A STEP TOWARD SUCCESS Each year National Honor Society has a formal initiation to induct new members according to their scholastic ability. Dues are collected at the beginning of the year. The dues are used for the scholarship given to a senior to use at the college of his choice. This year the club started having clean up day. On certain days, before or after school, members would help clean up disposed waste lying around the school. Honor Society also takes a field trip every spring. This year the club spent a day at Mermac Caverns and had a picnic. TEACHING THROUGH EXPERIENCE The Future Teachers of America's ambition is to serve the school in whatever capacity they can. This year the officers went to Mark Twain High School at Center, Mo. for the Northeast District FT A meeting. On April 24, the members toured the Jude- vine Center for Autistic Children. Here they learned how children with communicative dis- orders are taught. On May 8, FT A held their annual picnic at Dyer Park. This gave them a chance to say good-bye to their senior members. 90 HARD AT WORK There they go, a group of students who arrive for three or four hours of school, and then off to their chosen job for credit and pay. These students work at various jobs in the Warrenton area. Time is spent studying career fields, related to marketing, business or office, or specific trade skills. Tech school leaves at 11:15 to go to the Four Rivers Vocational School in Washington, Missouri. Trades that one can go into are career development, machine shop, building trades, industrial welding, graphic arts, orientation to health occupations, auto mechanics, and auto body. A combination of books and hands-on-training sets one up for a future career. 91 One More Story The newspaper staff wrote the stories, took the pic- tures, and did the interviews for their newspaper, the Tomahawk, They also collected the information for the senior paper. The long hours put in by the newspaper staff really showed through! Deadline Late Again In the beginning there was nothing. Then there were pages upon pages to fill with students, faculty, and teachers. There was copy to write, pictures to take, peo- ple to name, and events to cover. Page 12, page 25, page 121, deadlines were met slowly, page by page it became a book ultimately known as The WAHISHO. Go Big Red This year, in an effort to show Warrior Pride group of 76 students and teachers purchased red T-shirts which displayed in white letters the words Warrior Spirit Squad . The members of the squad have since worn the shirts to school, basketball games and other Warrior activities. The loudness and visibility of the shirts brought positive comments from both fans and rivals alike. The sponsors of the squad were Mrs. Kay Shores and Miss Sherry Brandes. This year W-Club was more productive than in the past years. Our fund raiser was a chili supper on January 18 and was a big success. During the year the officers of the club rewrote the constitution which the members voted in favor of adopting. On May 9th club members went on a field trip to Columbia, Missouri to the Sports Medicine Clinic and a tour of the Hearnes Center. It was a geat year and the members are looking forward to next year. Lights, Camera, Action!! 1! Drama students this year participated in several speech contests and earned several medals. The Dra- ma I and II classes performed in a variety of shows for the elementary students as well as acting for local organizations in town and appearing in the High School Variety Show nd the Spring Play-Up the Down Staircase. Who's really bustin' their buttons with pride around WHS? It is the members of our Speech Team. These hardworking students competed in five con- tests this year and brought home three sweepstake winners and the following medals: 1st - 21 2nd - 13 3rd - 18 Out of 123 entries, WHS students reached finals 101 times. Both concert and treble choir gave many great performances this year. As school was just getting into the swing of things, the vocal de- partment was hard at work prepar- ing for the many concerts to come. Concert choir's hard work paid off in March, when they received a 1 rating at contest in Mexico. The year was ended by a short performance at baccalaureate by concert choir. THE ROUTINE GOES MARCHING ON WARRIORS MARCH TO VICTORY The Warrior Marching Band prepared for its marching season by having band camp in the last week of July. Many new techniques were learned in order to improve the style of the band. The band's first performance of the year was in the fair parade. The first competi- tion was at Washington, where the band took fourth in field competition. The band ended its marching season by performing the show at the Homecoming game. When marching band season was over, the band began working on Christmas Con- cert music. The concert was a success. At the Spring Concert in May, the senior band members and their parents were given spe- cial recognition. The last band performance of the year was at graduation. BONJOUR!!! The Foreign Language Club was very busy this year. Their annual money making project was selling Advent calendars at Christmas time. They rounded out the year by taking a field trip to Lindenwood College to see a play and eat in a Chinese restaurant. COLOR MY WORLD This year, the Art Club was responsible for decorating the entire school at Christmas time. They also made and sold ornaments. The annual field trip was to the Fox Theater in St. Louis, where they took a complete tour. The year ended by a few of Intro to Art's top students painting a mural on the downstairs wall. 100 I u Only 20 miles to go! Which way did it go? The Warrenton Cross Country team had an- other successful season. Even though the team did well overall, there were two meets that stood out as distinct extra-effort races. These two were winning the Elsberry Mini-Medal meet and placing fourth at the North County Tech. Invitational. The girl's team had a large number of injuries, which held them back a bit. Next year, all but one will be returning to the team. With the acquisition of some good junior high runners, they should be a tough competitior. The two seniors, Richard Logan and Danielle Briggs, made sizeable contributions to the team. They served as team leaders and motivators and also had good finishes. WORK ON THAT GUY AHEAD OF YOU . . .
