Should I wear my jeans with a hole on the pocket? Or my ruffle blouse with my gold antique locket. Or maybe my mini skirt I got yesterday, I can’t wear that, what will people say. I could wear my dress with the slit up the side But there’s a run in my pantyhose that's to big to hide. Maybe Harold will dress up today, No, he'll wear a T-shirt like any other day. Maybe Mom's got something I can borrow. I’ll just sleep on it and wait till tomorrow. Sheri Coleman Caring, Sharing, And Swaring ... Friends? Some old, some new, sometimes snotty, but always true. Spending time, sharing sights, wasting, time, and oh. the fights. Kindergarden years bring all the fears, we glance away and we are grown, and all of a sudden we're on our own. Friends are gone, but never far, liking you for who you are. You hang around with all the bunch and sometimes heed to throw a punch. We always party with the best and we get drunk like all the rest. As time flies by we'll look to see all we did in 83' and as this year is over and done we’ll look to the next to a lot more fun. Carin Gerard You entered my life in a casual way, And saw at a glance what I needed; There were others who passed me or met me each day, But never a one of them heeded. Perhaps you were thinking of other folks more, Or chance simply seemed to decree it; I know there were many such chances before, But the others-well, they didn’t see it. You said just the things that I wished you would say, And you made me believe that you meant it; I held up my head in the old gallant way, And resolved you should never repent it. There are times when encouragement means such a lot, And a word is enough to convey it; There were others who could have, as easy as not- But, just the same, they didn't say it. There may have been someone who could have done more To help me along, though I doubt it; What I needed was cheering, and always before They had let me plod onward without it. You helped to refashion the dream of my heart, And made me turn eagerly to it; There were others who might have (I question that part) But, after all, they didn't do it!!! The next day the halls are filled with people wearing crazy hats, shirts, and ties. What in the world is going on? Is WHS going crazy? No, it’s the start of spirit week. The one week of school when all the students go crazy. Wednesday was the day for all the preps at heart, it was Preppy Day. Dress Up Day on Thursday brought a bunch of brand new ideas, while the last day Friday was the traditional Red and White Day. On Friday afternoon the townspeople looked out of their windows to see strange things pass by. It looked as if they were going to be stampeded by an elephant, a lion, and a ring master. What was going on, it was the parade. Then afterwards the stu- dents attended a pep assembly to increase spirit. When the time came to find out who’s float received which place, everyone waited intensely. All the work done was about to be justified, First place went to the Seniors, second to the Juniors, third to Freshmen, and last to the Sophomores. Seniors had the most spirit points during the week, ending with battlecries. It was a great time to be remembered by all. As the game gets un- derway the candidates for queen get-nervous. Soon it’s halftime, time for everyone to find out who has been named the 1982-83 Home- coming Queen. The candidates walk across the field, excitement rises. They announce the winner ... “Ladies and Gen- tlemen, the 192-83 Home- coming Queen is ... Mary Briggs escorted by John Chandler.” After the march- ing band played the Star Spangled Banner, we head- ed onward to a 14-7 victory over M.M.A. Then comes the dance, everyone rushes to get ready for Pyramid Rocks. The rest is now in our memories of Old Warren- ton High. (DOnOfWBLt reoiam flmacflL “Once Upon A Mattress” was presented the week- end before Thanksgiving in the Junior High Gym. Kathy Brock, Roger Stude, and Toni Arteaga portrayed the Princess Aggravain, Prince Dauntless, and Princess Winifred. This version of the story, “The Princess and the Pea”, was told by a wandering minstrel played by Barry Conway. The mute King Sextimus (Kevin Wat- son), the wizard (Larry Meadows), and the jester (Dean Griesbauer) helped the plot along until Winifred was proven a “genuine certified princess” and a suitable bride for the prince. Once this match was made Lady Larken (Mary Briggs) and Sir Henry (Brian Meine) could also be wed. All the lords and ladies, courtiers, and servants who sang, and danced, and acted their way thru the play also lived happily ever after. Barnwarming was originally scheduled in December but because of the excessive rain and flooding, it had to be cancelled. It was then rescheduled for January 14 and everything went as was originally planned. Many attended and danced to the music of Phase V. At 9:30 p.m. the coronation began. The candidates along with retiring 1982 king and Queen, Jim Schneider and Terri Harrell were presented to the audience and took their places on the traditional hay bale throne, await- ing the announcement of the new 1983 Barnwarming King and Queen. The gym was silent, then over the microphone came the announcement, “The new 1983 Barnwarming King and Queen are ... Jeff Karrenbrock and Thea Spoonster. A cheer from the crowd as the winners were crowned then the music started up and everyone danced the remainder of the night away. Always very large, appearing here and there, now and then, to this one and that one at his own ca- price. A wise but mischievous creature. Harvey, a very well mannered white Pooka rabbit who happens to be six feet tall and a problem for Elwood. Elwood, an easy going guy, always seems to embarrass his sister and niece by inopportunly introducing Harvey to their influential friends. Throughout the play attempts are made by Veta and Myrtle Mae, Elwoods sister and niece, to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium. The tables are turned when Veta confesses to Dr. Sanderson about having seen the Pooka. Pleased was the reaction from Mrs. Noel- kemper as to the way the play went. As couples entered the gym they found them- selves in a world all their own. Surrounded by rainbows, clouds, and unicorns, everyone be- came close as they danced to the music of Phase V. A gigantic rainbow over the stage and a lowered ceiling brought the effects of the fan- tasy world closer. To the left of the stage and through your imagination, one could hear Ker- mit the Frog serenading Miss Piggy in a gondo- la shaped like a canoe. At 10:30 the fantasy became a reality when George Heath and Sheri Coleman became the new 1982-83 prom king and queen. 1982-83 Prom King Queen Courtwarming On March 4, 1983, at 7:00 p.m. the lights in the junior high gym were dimmed and the at- mosphere was alive as the students enjoyed the second annual Courtwarming. The gym was decorated with red and white streamers with white columns at center stage. At 9:00 p.m. the big moment came. John Chandler and Denise Schaper were crowned the new 1982-83 king and queen by the retiring king and queen David Lee and JoLynn Hasen- kamp. Courtwarming was sponsored by the basket- ball cheerleaders for the team players. Music was provided by Larry Hensiek and Olon Wil- liams. For starters, they publish the Toma- hawk which comes out in the Banner every other week. They also read the announcements every- day in both the high school and the junior high. This year they started publishing a monthly school newspaper called the Peeping Tom. The Newspaper I class publishes the freshman activi- ties booklet which tells the incoming freshman what kind of classes they can take their freshman year. The Newspaper II class publishes the Senior Paper which is handed to the seniors while prac- ticing for graduation. Now, did you realize the newspaper staff did all these things? Deadlines!!!! Do the t Uowing words mean anything to you: copy sheet, 3R, pica ruler, microdol, and fixer? If they don’t mean anything to you don’t feel bad. These words do mean a lot to the people who are on the yearbook staff. The yearbook staff does everything needed to be done to publish a book. They not only take pictures, but also develop, print, lay the pictures out on a 3R, and send them in to be published. This year’s staff had a hard start, since Mrs. Huber took a leave of absence to have her baby, but this didn't seem to slow them down too much, because they have published a very fine yearbook. They deserve a big pat on the back! Busy Leaders The Student Council had a very active year. They sponsored a drive in the fall for local flood victims. Two pick-up loads of clothes, toys, and food items were collected. They attended the E.M.O. fall meet- ing, which was held in Winfield. During the Christmas season, the traditional Christmas tree was decorat- ed in the library. The main bulletin board displayed various Christmas cards expressing holiday greet- ings from students and faculty. February brought the popular carnation sales. Sales doubled over last year’s with almost 450 carnations being sold. Throughout the year Student Council sponsored a student of the month program. They also held var- ious Sweet Days, during which students could pur- chase an assortment of baked goods at lunch. Throughout the entire year, Student Council worked for the benefit of the students and had special com- mittees which worked on various issues. This years I. A. was run by President-Bobby Owens, Vice President-Murray Aston, Secretary Treasurer-Jim Achenbach, Historian-Charles Newbauer, and Sergeant at Arms-Bruce Branson. They made name plaques for the new teachers and refinished the school’s podium. They also constructed a cabinet for the drafting room. Sev- eral members went to district I. A. contest and Brian Meine qualified for state contest. Name Plates Anyone! Paints, Brushes, And, Sets Anytime, either spring or fall, the art club can be found busy at work. This year’s art club had many projects. The two biggest projects were designing, making, and painting sets for the two plays. They also participated in the Homecoming parade. Several of the members dressed up as crayons and a crayon box and marched in the parade. This year’s money-making project was selling shorts and duffel bags which had the school crest on them. The club ended the year by taking a field trip to the Old Cathedral in St. Louis. “Do I Have To Work Today? Do I have to work TODAY? This might be a common question you might hear in COE class. In COE every student has some kind of job ranging from Cooks to Mechanics. Each year the students go to District DECA Contests, where they each compete in the catagory in which they work. They did quite well this year, having Jim Achenbach, Amanda Herndon, Lisa Boehle, and Brenda Williams winning and get- ting to compete at State Level. At State con- test Jim Achenbach, placed 1st, Amanda Hern- don 2nd, and Brenda Williams 6th. Experience Pays Off Students are given the chance to attend Four Rivers Vo-Tech School in Washington. These students have the opportunity to de- velop skills, abilities, and understandings necessary to succeed in the working world. They attend vocational school a half day for both their junior and senior years. After completion of this training program, job placement service is available for assisting these students in finding a job. 99 Treble Choir, Concert Choir, and Vocal Ensemble made three brief appearances this year at the winter and spring concerts and also at the Festival of the Arts. Choirs also performed at the district contest in Mexico on March 26. All three choirs are made up of dedicated students who wake up for early morning practices and stay late after school for contest. Say It With Music Speech Members of SPEECH CLUB started the year off by attending a workshop at Bowling Green in October. Our own Warrenton Annual Speech Contest was held in February for the 5th time. Students competed in the speech contests at Warrenton, Francis Howell, Elsberry, and Kirks- ville. They received more medals this year than ever received in the past. Lots of hard work on the part of the students has certainly brought success. Drama The Third Annual Variety Show, the musical “Once Upon a Mattress”, and the spring comedy “Harvey”, were the three major productions for Warrenton’s actors and actresses. They also partici- pated in the spring festival and speech contests. Students have also provided clowns for parades and entertainment for many church groups, classes, and organizations in our town. Drama students make up a very active group. “Ready Ok!!! 7 7 Flags And Poms This years marching band came back ready to work and ready to win. Work started before school with a three day band camp. This year everyone had to start over learning a new style of marching while “breaking in the new band teacher. The month of October was a very busy month for the band. They started out the marching season with competi- tions at the Washington H.S. Marching Festival. The War- riors proudly received a third place trophy in the Francis Howell field competition, and went on to take second place in field and third place in parade at Fayette. They also participated in the Mizzou Homecoming parade. With the last performance, the band turned in their uni- forms for formal dress to start concert band. They had several performances throughout the year starting with their Christmas concert, and going on to perform in the Spring Arts Festival, Spring Concert, and participation in the area contest at Mexico. Jazz band was also very busy. Not only did they partici- pate in concerts with the concert band, but they went to competition at Rolla and had a banquet later in the year. Even through all the changes the band kept their spirit and dedication. Whether it was concert band, jazz band, marching band or pep band, the year was a big success. Play It Again!!! Here We Come Again!!! Soy it with i ■ Guilty ... Or ... Not Guilty The National Honor Society held its annual initiation of new members in November. The library was set up for a trial as the induction of new initiates. Following the induction, a signing of the register preceded the serving of refresh- ments for those in attendance. During the year the club amended and adopted a new constitu- tion. In the spring, an all day field trip was planned and enjoyed by all the members. Numbers ... And More Numbers? The members of the Math Club work very hard at their monthly meetings. They are given difficult brain teasers to sharpen their mathematical skills. All of this work is to prepare these students for the annual Scholar Quiz which is held in March. Accomplishments FTA is a fairly large club and is growing every year. They do a number of activities such as student teaching in the elementary, a buddy system for new students so they don’t feel lost or left out in a new environment, and turn-about-day in which students take over as teachers and administrators. This year they went on a field trip to the Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis and wound up the year with a Spring picnic at Dyer Park. Le Club De La Langue Etrangere Foreign Language Club participated in the Homecoming parade in the fall of this school year. They also sold foreign candy and advent candy at Christmas time. They had a Mille Bornes tournament in which Brian Nothstine and Bill Newburry won. In the Spring they went to Rigazzio's on a field trip to eat foreign food. The Future Farmers of America do many exciting and educational things throughout the year. In November Green- hand Initiation takes place in which all freshmen ar formally inducted into the organization. The annual slave auction was held on November and netted $2,000. This provides the money for Barnwarming and our Spring Banquet. Throughout the year they are studying for contest teams in areas such as meat judg- ing, livestock judging (etc.) Competition is done on the Area and District levels. If they do well enough at district, they go on to state. To end the years activities FFA has an Annual Banquet for the receiving of awards for their achievements during the year. From their accomplishments during the year. Educating Through Experience Scissors .. Pins ... Needles Every year the Future Homemakers of America do many money making and re- creational activities. First they sell carna- tions for Homecoming. They also have many Bake Sales throughout the year. National FHA Week is during February. During FHA Week every member dresses up every day. They also put a bulletin board up and gave pens to the teachers. They had a recrea- tional activity that week in which they went bowling. Girls track had a very disappointing season this year. The track was soaked with rain most of the time, and the girls had to fight the cold and snow. The varsity team didn’t have very many return- ing athletes this year, so they had to rely on a lot of junior varsity rookies. At the first track meet Warrenton came in sec- ond out of three teams and received fourth place at the Warrenton Invitationals. Junior varsity re- ceived first place at the EMO Conference, and varsity came in fifth. This year girls track chose their most outstand- ing players as, field, Sheri Tonoli; distance, Dan- ielle Briggs; Sprinter, Michelle Davis; Rookie of the Year, Tammy Patrick; and most dedicated, Danielle Briggs. All of the girls are looking forward to a much better, winning season next year. “Here We Come Again The Race Is On!!! Much of the team consisted of first year members, but they did quite well. They had 8 dual meets and 2 tournaments. JV won ail their meets and varsity lost all their meets, but at narrow margin.
