7 jirsi- % A Across the hills and down the narrow ways. And up the valley where the free winds sweed, The earth is folded in an ermined sleep That mocks the melting mirth of myriad Mays. Departed her disheartening duns and grays. And all her crusty black is covered deep. Dark streams are locked in Winter’s donjon-keep. And made to shine with keen, unwonted rays. O icy mantle, and Deceitful snow! What world-old liars in your hearts ye arel Are there not still the darkened seam and scar Beneath the brightness that you fain would show? Come from the cover with thy blot and blur, O reeking Earth, thou whited sepluchre! 15 00 rtc oot u 'Tc « 'fytdlu. People we know and people we knew. Growing together then drifting apart. Always amending and now a new start. At graduation we all grow nearer. And all of our friends seem so much dearer. And as we say our final goodbye. One last embrace and one more cry, A Keep in touch” and a Promise I will”, A Remember when” but, better still, A place in my heart, you’ll always stay, This is what’s said as we go our own way. Points were tallied for each class. At the end of the week the class with the most points was said to have the most spirit. Points were given out daily for the best costumes beginning with Mon- day as Warrior Day where you had to wear a headdress or a costume like a warrior. Tues- day was Gold Rush Day. you came to school looking like a miner, pioneer, etc. and upon arriving, clues were hidden about school tell- ing you where to find the gold nugget. Addi- tional points were given to the one who found it. Wednesday was Cowboy Day, Thursday was Western Day, and Friday was Red White Day. Taking first place for the floats was the Sophomores, second place went to the Sen- iors. third place to the Juniors, and fourth to the Freshmen. After the parade was the traditional bonfire. Everybody gathered around to see what each organization had to throw into the bon- fire, and of course to join in on the Spirit Jug calling. Closing the bonfire was the Tug-of-War be- tween classes and the snake dance. At the end of it all the Juniors and Seniors had tied for the most spirited class. Freshman: Nancy Noblitt Sophomore: Karen Merx Junior: Terri Harrell Freshman-. Alisa Pauk Sophomore: Lora Wolff Junior: Leslie Young Senior: Anita Driskill Senior: Robin White Drumroll please! Ladies and gentlemen, the moment you’ve anxiously await ed is now at hand, we are now happy to crown our 1981-82 Homecoming Queen!” Every candidate is tense, and clumsily fumbling to keep her skirt from flying up. The air is still and bitterly cold. Suddenly Rita Sommer announces in a clear crisp voice, Our 1981-82 Homecoming Queen is ... Junior, Leslie Young!” The crowd explodes with cheers as the band breaks into its rendition of Lady”. Senior Ronnie Parks escorts the lovely, blushing new queen to the platform to be crowned by the retiring queen, Kathy Roberts. This moment was shared by the entire crowd. The band finally finishes their encore as Rita continues with a breakdown of Spirit Week, and a final recognition of the rest of the candidates. Windchill Factor Of 5 Homecoming was drawn out throughout the suspenseful game where the Warriors put up a tough fight but lost to their opponents the Trojans 3 to 12. The losing of the game didn’t hold down the good ’ole Warrior spirit. For we went right on with our dance to celebrate the football season. Everyone danced to the mellow mu- sic of 'Essence'. The Warrior Western Wroundup came up thrilling, chilling, but most of all enjoyable. There's No Business Like Show Business” Master of Ceremonies: D. Lemon Findin ’ Me Some Love B. Linke, K. Murphy. In all, 63 students helped the Art, Music, and Drama departments co- operate to provide a really fine show. An apprecia- tive audience applauded songs like Jubilation T. Cornpone,” Put 'em Back the Way They Was,” If I Had My Druthers, and Progress Is the Root of All Evil. The antics of Al Capp’s characters from Dog- patch USA were very entertaining, and the entire cast and crew deserve a terrific round of applause. The play is about a group of individual- ists who believe in doing everything their own way. The action in the play centers around Mother, who be- comes a writer because a typewriter was delivered to the house by mistake. Father, who builds fireworks in the base- ment and Grandpa, who does not believe in paying his income taxes, also are centered among the action. Other members of the household include a daughter, who wants to be a ballet dancer-, her husband, who plays the xylo- phone. a Swedish maid, and her lazy, southern boyfriend. Add to these a Russian countess, an IRS agent, a pompass businessman and his wife, a pair of young lovers, and you’ll have the ingredients for a lively play. A lot of time and hard work were put into the production of the play in order to make it a success. Courtwarming This year for the first time, on February 26,1982 the basektball cheerleaders sponsored a Courtwarming Dance for the Basketball season. They had a week full of various activities ending with the dance on Friday. It was held on May 17, 1982. While the students were modeling their fashions a quartet sang, the quartet consisted of Denise Schaper, Bev Linke, Charmin Smith, and Toni Artega. The 1982-83 officers were installed at the end of the program. Bobby Hoelscher and Teresa Blake Randy Brand and Nancy Handlang Barnwarmin’ 1982 was given by the Future Farmers of America on Saturday, March 27th. Many attended the traditional event and danced to the music of Phase V. Silhouetted on one wall was the theme with a couple walking up a curved stairway. The main attraction was a gazebo decorated with roses and rose trees to enhance it. The music for the evening was performed by Dixie. Master and Mistress of ceremony for the evening were Mike Lemon and Betty Houston. As the lamp flickered and faded, the 1982 Prom was recalled as a southern night memory. Half-Time Performers The Pom and Flag squads performed many talented routines this year. Home Basketball games were entertained at half time by the Pom Pon squad. They arranged routines to the songs. The Beach Boys Medely, Night Life, Hot Stuff, and On Broadway, making up a variety of different performances. The Flags put on a very entertaining half time show at home football games, along with the Marching Band. At Union Marching Festival the Flags squad received Best Color Guard Award. This is the first time in competition the squad has won such an honor. Sii National Honor Society Every year the National Honor Society has a formal initiation for its new members. To be a member of National Honor Society you must be in the top 15% of the Senior Class or top 10% of the Junior Class. The top 5% of the sophomore class are probationary members. Another requirement is to have had 1 credits of English, History, Math and Science. Honor Society gives out I local scholarship each year, to a Senior for use at the college of their choice. An education field trip is taken in the Spring and this year they went to the Zoo, Lazarium, and The Magic House. Math Club The Math Club is designed to prepare students for two things. First is for the scholar quiz held here at school and second is for the Math Contests that they go to each year. The difference between scholar quiz and Math Contests is that, Scholar Quiz are short answer math problems and Math contests are long answer Math questions. Each year they give out House tests. This test is to help them prepare for Contests. In the Spring they go to contests at Rolla and then to Union for a Math and Science Scholar Quiz. To help finance their trips they sponsor a dance each year. Future Fiomemakers Of America The Future Homemakers of America were led by Peggy Handlang - President, Carla Brush - Vice-President, Teresa White - Secretary, Donna Schroeder - Treasurer, Doris Schoppenhorst - Reporter, Nancy Wolf - Historian. On Octo- ber 29th was their traditional initiation which the new mem- bers had to wear a dress, carry a doll, wear an apron, tie a scarf around their head and carry a paper sack. They have many bake sales throughout the year. Their annual Fashion Show was held May 17. This ended the year’s activities. The Future Farmers of America do a lot of exciting things throughout the year. They go to many con- tests and compete with schools from all over the state of Missouri. In October their annual slave auc- tion is held at which they made a total of $2342.70 which goes for Barnwarmin’, the spring banquet. February was National FFA Week. Everyday they had a different activity planned: Monday - Jacket Day, Tuesday - Teacher Appreciation Day Served Donuts, Wednesday - Aggie Day, Thursday - Teacher Appre- ciation Day, Served Donuts and that night there was an Alumni Banquet, Friday - Presented Flowers to the Secretaries to show their appreciation to helping with FFA week. In May they have two banquets, the yearly chapter banquet and the Area Eleven Banquet. FFA At Their Best 99 Industrial Art Club Art Club The Spotlight Is On Drama The Varisty Show” started the year early for drama students. They performed several skits in it. Also in the fall they read stories to some of the elementary classes. They also participated in Li’l Abner,” You Can’t Take It With You,” and The Spring Arts Festivel.” Being clowns came naturally, and drama clowns appeared at the Antique Machinery Show, the County Fair Parade, the Fruhlingfest and the Homecoming Parade. These ambitious students created puppets and a puppet stage this year. They wrote their own plays and per- formed for some primary classes and at the Fruhlingfest. Ambitious? we. . .11 Hardworking? we. . II Pure perform- ers? Absolutely!! Buddy System FTA activities include student teaching, the buddy system, and this year turn about day. Turn about day was the day the students ran the school. A different student took the positions of principal and secretary in the office. The buddy system was designed to help new students get to know their way around the school. They also go to the Elementary to help teach a class. FTA is having their annual picnic this spring. Foreign Language Club Speech Club Student Council Student Council under the direction of President Dan Watson, Vice President Chip Harrison, and Sec.-Tres. Candy Davis, managed to get a lot of things accomplished. Some of the events they were involved in were: October was sponsoring the Homecoming parade and attending the EMO fall conference. December brought with it the putting up of the Christmas tree in the hallway, and deco- rating the bulletin board. Student Council helped with the Adopt a Family Program, sponsored by all the organiza- tions. The month of February they had a flower sale for Valentines Day, along with a drive for voter registration of those students who had turned 18 before the first of March. They sponsored a blood drive in March, that turned out to be a real success. Spring’s fund raiser was two bake sales, to help finance the Homecoming for next year. They sponsored the all day scholar quiz for the district, and our school took 2nd. A student of the month program was started, which included a student from each class and information about them and their picture put on the bulletin board each month. A new constitution was written, that changed the Student Council elections from the fall to the spring, a vote was taken and passed by the student body. With elections held on May 25th. An orien- tation for new Student Council members was held during the summer for the preparation of the beginning of the new 1982-83 year. 103 First, Last, And This year’s marching band came back as strong as ever. Work began before school on the football show. Freshmen learned the basics, and the upperclassmen sharpened their perfor- mance skills. Competitions were a large part of this year’s effort. The group took third place in the Union Homecoming Parade. The annual Washington H.S. Marching Festival saw the Warriors take third in the street division. With the end of football season came the end of marching band. The members turned in their uniforms for formal dress. Concert band began. Several performances were given by the band and the choirs throughout the year. The choirs started out by performing in the Variety Show. The Christmas Concert in January” was a big success, as were the Arts Festival and the Spring Concert. The concert band achieved a feat that few at W.H.S. could remember happening in the past, (though it did). They played their way to a I rating at district contest in Mexico. Many ensembles and solos also received I ratings, and compet- ed at state level. The choirs also performed at district but no one received a I. Over all. it was a year of firsts, lasts, and to be continueds. The band and choirs showed that they possessed a fine spirit, and all members showed true dedication. To Be Continued . . . The J.V. team this year consisted of two returning players from last year, and the rest were new players. Therefore, it took a lot of hard work and many hard practices to get ready for the games. At the beginning of the season the girls had a hard time getting started, and playing as a team. By the third game though, they knew what they were supposed to do, and won their first game. From then on, the girls tried really hard, and ended up with an overall record of 6-7. With all the young players, next years team should be pretty good. Basketball team consisted of a young team, only 5 returning members from the year be- fore. Even with this, the girls really worked hard as a team. Their final record was 5-11, which isn’t to bad for such a young team. Next year’s team should do well if all the members return. 115 Fighting Warriorettes The girls Varsity Basketball team was one of the har- dest working teams, yet to be here at Warrenton High. They had a lot of ups and downs on the team and they lost a couple of their members. The girls that were left, were forced to take on most of the games and a couple of the J.V. girls had to fill in. These girls played as a team, and worked really hard to win. They played quite a few big schools. They ended up with a record of 11-12. 116 Opponent Bowling Green Wellsville Mexico Herman Wellsville Winfield Montgomery Herman Louisiana Wright City Silex Elsberry Clopton Troy Wellsville Troy Montgomery St. Dominic Silex Washington St. Francis Borgia Montgomery Centralia Us Them 48 50 43 34 38 54 45 35 27 38 55 41 46 36 48 40 35 53 69 41 51 42 34 44 39 48 29 36 26 30 25 42 44 40 39 38 44 31 35 62 32 38 44 39 46 57 117 Them 73 59 54 60 52 59 40 71 61 75 C 74 117 56 46 79 89 54 70 79 41 86 I 75 The 1981-82 basketball season was one of rebuilding. Of all the returning players only a few had little playing exper- ience. The main thing I can say about this team was they never gave up everytime they took the floor the other team was always faster, better shooters, and more exper- ienced, but the Warriors kept taking them on and even though they were defeated 22 times they kept trying and never gave up. I feel that this year a solid foundation was set for upcoming teams. Because, before you climb to the top you have to see the bottom, and we have been there. This years team has nothing to be ashamed of, even though they lost all games but the scoreboard they all came away winners inside, stated Coach Ward. Varsity Wellsville Mont. The one thing of importance for the J.V. team was the playing time and the experience they earned. The team showed what to look forward to in the fu- ture by winning the last game of the season. After trailing by seven points with less than two min- utes to play, they showed a lot of poise and char- acter and came back to win by one point. This is the type of basketball that builds winners. Golf The golf team this year played between rains and came out with a five win and five loss record. Jerry Adams place eleventh at districts and the team placed ninth. At the Warrenton Invitationals the team placed seventh. Determined To Win This years Varsity track team worked really hard, and they were determined to win. The girls won dual meets with both Winfield and Wright City. At the conference meet Carolyn Niss- ing broke her own record and posted a new school record at 14:23 in the 3200M. As a team the girls ended 3rd in Conference. It was the first year for State Sectional Meets. The following girls qualified: Cara Fischer for the high jump, Charmin Smith for the IOOM and 200M, Karen Allen, Michelle Davis, Nancy Noblitt, and Charmin Smith for the 800M relay team. Charmin Smith went on to take 4th in State in the 200M. She was also voted Most Valuable Player and Co-Captain of her team. Other honors went to Marsha Adkins for Most Dedicated and Most Improved, Rita Sommer was the other Co-Captain, and Nancy Noblitt Rook- ie of the year. So the girls kept their Determination and proved they could win. The J.V. team had only 5 runners and 3 meets. Often the Freshmen were asked to fill gaps on varsity. The highlights of the season was the 54-34 victory over Winfield in a dual meet. 122 Track Senior Players Row I: David Breeden. More Snow!!! This year the snow was the most talked about object. Before Christmas vacation we had a week off because of the snow. And then another day after the new year start- ed. But the snow wasn’t the only thing that kept us home, it was also the below 0 temperatures. Like when it was 20 below but with the windchill factor it was 60 below. It seemed we had the snow for sleigh riding, but the freezing temperatures kept everybody indoors. When we finally got to come back to school, everybody faced the problem of getting stuck in the parking lot, and of course there were people who did, and ended up being pushed out. Walking out to the buses, or walking from the buses was tricky, you had to watch your step, one wrong step and you were on the groundl And then some people fell just out in the parking lot, trying to get to their cars. Then afterwards, after all the snow melted, instead of walking through snow drifts, it was wading through pud- dles up to your anklesl Oh but wasn’t it funll Because of all this snow and cold weather we missed a total of 12 days, putting the last day of school in June. 152 CAMPBELLTON CORP.
