It's almost be- come a tradition at ol' Warrenton High, with every senior class taking their best shot at it. But in the past, the Seniors have had a tough time pulling this off. Word would usually leak out about a week before the planned event and spoil the surprise. In most cases, once the word got out, everyone decided to stay in school instead of skip. The challenge was gone ! ! But this year, the Seniors of '79 proved that they really had their act together. They carefully construed a plan, set the date, and carried it off without the slightest hitch. It was a total surprise, not only shock- ing fellow students, but the faculty and administration as well. A lot goes into the planning and preparation for a Senior Skip Day. Many factors must be considered. For example, the day on which SSD takes place, location for the big gathering (preferably somewhere out of town), and last but not least, what type of refresh- ments '' are to be served. The last being utmost on everyone's mind! Most importantly is keeping SSD a secret. Everyone must be very closed mouthed. If you're lucky, every- thing goes off just as planned. At least it did this year. And what about years to come? Well, all we can say is, BEST OF LUCK! ! ! ... The Central Administration includes both the Superintendent, Dr. Gerald Ellis, and the Assis- tant Superintendent, Wendell Roehrs. Their main responsibilities are budget planning G management, staff personnel programs, plant G transportation man- agement, and community relations. All plans and decisions made by the Central Administration is re- ported back to our Board of Education. The Building Administration, like the Central Administration is also involved with staff selections and the budget, but on a more secondary level. Their first duties are those of class scheduling, staff evaluations, student conduct, departmental coordinations, and home- school conduct. Principal Ed Mossop, and Assistant Principal William Beand are both responsible for these functions. They report their decisions directly to the Superintendent. Some of the activities that took place were selling boutonieres and mums for the homecoming dance, Christmas car- oling and they helped FFA with the successful bamwarming dance. ?IZ2A Outstanding In His Field The Warrenton Chapter of Future Farmers is busy throughout the year providing its members with many educational and fun activities. They started their year off with the Greenhand initi- ation in October, which brought in many new members. In November the slave auction, a money making pro- ject, was held. It involved selling the members to people who wanted someone to work an 8 hour day. With the help of FHA they succeeded in making 1978- 79 Bamwarming a great success. During February 17-24 the National FFA week was held. They had a teacher appreciation day, an official dress day, and aggie day, on which they wore chore clothes. 36 Kids Helping Kids The main purpose of FTA is to provide the elementary teachers with student teachers to help with individual tutoring and classroom activities. Their money making project for the year was having the concession stand at the volleyball games. In the spring they plan to take a trip to a school for the blind. Working Toward Work VIC A Club, a club for the working stu- dent, is sponsored by Mr. Anderson. The purpose of this club is to explore vocational industrial situations. It is opened only to students in D.E. and C.O.E. Their list of activities includes a field trip to Silver Dollar City. “With A Little Luck, The Paint Won’t Smear.” For those of you who enjoy art and have the knack for painting, sketching, crafts, etc., than Art Club's the thing for you. Mr. C., the head honcho of Art Club, helps the members plan and coordinate all the activities. Such activities include the Festival of the Arts (in the spring), a sock hop (this year they co-sponsored with the Yearbook Dance), and a trip in the later part of the year. Td Rather Be a Hammer Than A Nail’ Industrial Arts Club is made up of those students who are interested in working with their hands and are fairly well skilled in working with tools. Every year they participate in the Festi- val of the Arts with demonstrations of drafting, metals, woodworking, and elec- tricity. They are usually involved in at least one contest per year (at Kirksville), and take a trip in the spring of the year. 38 Brain Teasers This group acknowledges those students whose scholastic achievements, leadership qualities, ser- vice and character are outstanding. Members get into the group by being in the top 15% of the senior class, top 10% of the junior class and the top 5% of the sophomore class are probationary members. This year the formal initiation was held on Nov. 6 with the re- ception for the probationary sophomore members to be held in the spring. The group also gives a $100 scholarship to a senior member. Never Ending Problems This year the Student Council held an election in the fall of the year. The officers elected were sen- iors, Ivan Bebermeyer, president; Stacey Fitzgib- bons, vice-president; and junior Sarah Heath, sec- retary-treasurer. As usual, the Student Council put on the homecoming parade. They were also respon- sible for having trees planted in front of the school. The fall conference meeting was held at Bowling Green, with the spring meeting to be held at Troy. A few members also attended a meeting at ECJC this winter. This year the group may give a scholarship to the senior of their choice. Strike Up The Band C'mon now, it can't be that funny? 76 Trombones We will, We will Rock You! ! ! Extra! Extra! Hot Off The Press! Deadlines ! Deadlines! The biggest headache of all For those of us who make up the yearbook, the dead- lines are sometimes a matter of life and death. You know how it is-----when you need 42 pages in by Jan. 10; you only have 25 finished and it's Jan. 9! Never fear though, we'll see to it that you get your book — all shiney new and ready to autograph! It'll be crammed full of pictures, articles, artwork and plenty of room to sign your name. Like the headline says- EXTRA! EX- TRA ! see this months addition of the War- renton High School Tomahawk. This year's advisor Mrs. Gerund, who took over for the former advisor Mrs. Lucas, is responsible in seeing that her staff has its act together and gets the paper ready for publication. It comes out twice a month and is included among the pages of the Warrenton Banner. The paper consists of many feature articles, poety, editorials, pic- tures, and cartoons. Lend A Helping Hand Lights, Camera Peer Counseling is a program where students help fellow students with their problems. The counselors had planned originally, to lead discussion groups in the Junior High second semester, but due to mini-courses the plans fell through. Although it was a disappoint- ment, the extensive active listening training the counselors received was not wasted. The students re- mained available to listen to other students problems witha bright outlook and an open mind. The dramatics class this year turned out to be a big success. With the production of 1 'Oklaho- ma first semester, the class proved itself and its talented students. This is good experience for any young actors or actresses searching for an acting career in later life. Dating, Boring, 44 And Scoring Did you stand in front of the mirror for many hours trying to look your very best ... Or, were you the type who could sit back and not worry about it, just take it as it comes? These are just a few of the many questions one feels. If you haven't been ' 'asked out'' don't feel left out or down, because times have really changed. It seems as though asking out isn't the thing anymore - it's more or less like being with someone. You meet at a party or go riding around and end up to- gether. For those of you who have been down this road before ... I'm sure you know what I mean. And for those of you who haven't ... JUST WAIT! ! ! 45 Three Wild And Crazy Guys Our first view of the Celt Brothers, alias Men from Mud alias Bob-Kitties, came to us one warm and sunny day on the football field as they crawled around searching for a lunch of arms and legs. These two dia- bolical doers set the pace then for a continuous run of what have later been called ' 'unusual'', to say the least, pep rallies. Accompanied by our own Coach Wormsley as Cap- tain Spirit, Allen Brush and Andy Williams brought to us the continued drama of Good vs.Evil. Later in the year, culture was their gift as they presented a ballet to end all ballets on the basketball court. Thanks to alot of dedication and a great lack of dig- nity, the Not Ready for Pep Assembly Players will go down in WHS history as three infamous, yet spirited, HAMS! Hey fella's, wait up! 46 Kiss me you fool! Jocks! Jocks! Jocks! No Hablo Espagnol!! Parlez-vous franc a is bprechen-Sie Deutsch? If you do (or want to learn how) than you should join the Foreign Language Club. There are approximately 50 members including the Sponsor Mme. Frau Beach. This years activities included the bake sale in De- cember (a money-making project), a dinner for the members with all types of french and german foods (catered by a 4-H Club), and a demonstration sale at the Festival of the Arts. For those of you who are ath- letically inclined, (you know- the jock type) and have let- tered in a sport, whether it was football, volleyball, basketball or track, then there is an orga- nization just for you. It's the Warrenton, High School W- Club. As part of the contribution to the athletic Dept. , they are trying to get a weight-lifting machine, but so far they've had very little success. Headed by President, Ivan Bebermeyer, the club has planned many activities for the year. Shake Those Poms!!! The Pom Pom Squad of 78-79 really pulled off some great performances this year. The Holloween performance was truly outstanding, with the girls dressed as spooks and goblins, it added an extra touch to the half-time show. The squad also performed at the pep rallies for the students. Their shows in- cluded one with football signals, with the girls showing off their expertise at calling what they saw. They also showed us what they could do with the new disco craze. ¥ Give Me A, W-A-R-R-l-O-R-S We Are The Champions If you had to sum it up in one word, then SUPERFANTABULOUS just might cover it. It was SUPER! , FANTAS- TIC ! , and FABULOUS! . What was? Our Varsity Football season, that's what. What more can we say about a team that gave us a winning year of 9 victo- ries to 1 loss! This year saw some spectacular plays ... and some spectacular players. It started with win, after win, after win. And after awhile, we just came to ex- pect victory. We weren't let down. The only disappointment came with the loss to St. Clair, in the very last game of the season. That knocked the Warriors out of the State Championship playoffs. It doesn't matter really. We're still proud of our Warrior Football Team. After all, with a 9-1 record, who wouldn't be! Varsity Football 53 Up against a lot of bigger schools providing tough opposition the JV team this year had a hard time prov- ing themselves. The team, chosen from a small group, did show an impressive passing attack with considerable improve - ment towards the end of the season. JV's overall record was 2-4 with the victories coming in the last three games as the teams got closer to our own size. Bump! Set! Spike! Undefeated Season This years volleyball season was a very exciting one. The varsity team finished with a 6-1 conference record, leaving the Warriorettes tied for first place in the con- ference standings. Competing in the State Regionals, the girls finished with second place, which was a big accomplishment. The members of the squad elected, co- captains-Linda Heggeman and Chantay Smith, most valuable-Linda Heggeman, most improved- Liz Mossop. The varsity team was coached by Joyce Johnson. Junior Varsity had an undefeated season. Their conference standings were 7-0, and their all around record was 13-0. Most valuable player was Kathy Roberts, most improved was Missy Wright, and co-cap- tains were Lynn lliff and Shawna Fitzgib- bons. The Team was coached by Sue Ri- ley. Hit That A Crew Shoot For Two! 60 Although at times this year the odds seemed impossible, our team still kept their Spirit and stayed in there fighting. On the record, it looks like we didn't do so good, but the Warrior fans re- member many exciting moments------------ ---despite other so-called Warrior ' 'fans''. The year had many close games, but the individual talents on the team did their best and we thank them for their representation of our school. 61 Varsity Is Great And JV’s Up And Coming - 4 - 63 Score! It was the 1979 Yearbook Dance sponsored by the Yearbook Staff and the Art Club. For the second time in history, WHS had a disc-jock- ey , this time, Bryan Smith. There was also the crowning of the 1979 Yearbook King and Queen. The candidates were elected by the entire student body, and it was the first time that all the candidates were Seniors. The 1979 King and Queen are Bill Chandler and Kim Toben, crowned by the retiring King and Queen, Keith Luecke and Charlene Mer- tens. The candidates were: Peggy Laird, Eddy Twiehaus, Stacey Fitzgibbons, Ivan Bebermeyer, Retiring Queen- Charlene Mer- tens, Retiring King- Kieth Luecke, MarkBrune, Diane Greer, Bill Chandler, Kim Toeben. 1979 Yearbook King And Queen Bill Chandler Kim Toeben Retiring King And Queen Everything was backwards as Spirit Week start- ed on Monday. There were shirts buttoned back- wards , pants on in reverse and glasses on the back of heads. Backwards day might have been the day for students to look their worst had it not been for Tacky Day on Tuesday. Rags and bare threads were seen and one of the prizes went to a mar- velous clashing bright green jump suit. On Wednesday, Warriors roamed the halls and camped out in classrooms. Papooses and toma - hawks were toted and braids were in abundance, even among the faculty. Dress-up day followed on Thursday. Tuxedos and long dresses were among the fanciest outfits but the whole student body looked nice. Red and White was the final order of attire on Friday and was a great kick-off to the game that night. A Super Spirit Filled Week Chicken Wire, Nails, Napkins, Napkins, Napkins The ingredients add up when it comes to building a good float. Among the necessities are spirit, determination, and stamina (not to mention a hammer and a couple of good staple guns.) The building of a float starts when ideas first start ' 'floating around''. The finished product may be quite different from the original suggestion and chances are even the end result has been battered and beaten with last minute changes. This year, as students went nightly to do their part in their individual class effort to win the prize, it was the Seniors who had the lucky combination. For the third year in a row, the '79 class stuffed napkins and bent chicken wire to make theirs the best float in the parade. Why, year after year, do students continue to give up their evenings in the endless vidual? To stuff till their fingers are blue and possibly red, green, or yellow from paint? ' 'The an- swer is simple,'' remarked one of the workers ' 'it gets me out of the house ! '' 69 • I Warriors Defeat Colonels It was an easy victory for the Warriors at the Friday night Home- coming game where the Warrior defense dominated MMA leaving them scoreless and allowing the Warrior offense to move on to a final score of 21-0. A New Homecoming Queen Crowned Red and Silver were seen again at the Homecoming dance as couples danced to the music of Ax. The new queen Pam Sutton reigned over the dance and it was a perfect ending to the successful spirit week and victorious game. The coronation took place during half-time at the game where retiring queen Sue Heath finished her term marking a new football season and another year with a great Warrior Homecoming. Everyone there will remem- ber the year that the Warriors had a massacre in Big Red Country. 1978- '79 Homecoming Queen Pam Sutton 1) Carleen Fortenberry, Fresh. 2) Terri Schmidt, Fresh. 3) Gail Buxton, Soph. 4) Linda Roehrs, Soph. 5) Kathy Schemmer, Ju- nior 6) Kathy Hubbell, Senior 7) Kim Toben, Senior 71 Barnwarming 78-79 Barnwarming Court and Retiring King G Queen: Maurice G Jenny Brewe Juniors: Paul Neihoff G Brenda Schwartz Seniors: Andy Williams G Jana Smith On November 17th, 1978 there was a foot- stompin', kne e - slappin1 dance held in the Multi Purpose room, to the mu- sic of Phase V. About half way thru, the queen candidates had to put on safety glasses, saw a board in half, then nail it together. The king candidates had lipstick and rouge put on them and were to say, Hi, Big Boy! 11 in the sexiest voice possible. Coronation followed shortly after this, with Andy Williams and Bren- da Schwartz being crowned the new king and queen. Before The Curtain Rises Weeks of practice added up to the final presenta- tion of Oklahoma. The first test was to make chorus members actors, and to teach the drama class to sing. This was accomplished through night upon night of reading lines and memorizing music. No one was even on stage yet. Students who didn't get involved in the acting part of the play were kept busy designing sets, painting, constructing a picket fence, and learning to change sets in only minutes, soundlessly. The last week was when the final preparations were made. Costumes were brought in and the lights were set for opening night. This play was a children's adaptation which allowed for more audience participation and response. The characters were portrayed quite well. There was the lion with it's ' 'Cour-Age'', the wicked witch and her sinister, screaching, laugh, and Dorothy, who was so sweet and innocent. The children (and ALOT of adults !) in the audience all jumped from their seats in fright when the wicked witch came running and scream from the back of the gym upon to the stage. The scarecrow's wobbly legs accounted for a good deal of laughs, as well as the Tin Man's first squeaky movements. The thunderous voice of Oz, accompanied by flashing lights, was also quite convincing. It was obvious that everyone who attended enjoyed themselves a great deal! “We Got A New Dance And It Goes Like this A Song For Every Style It Wasn’t Always Easy TRACK TEAM MEMBERS: Sheryl Ardery, Lisa Dennager, Lori Dixon, Miriam Gardner, Betsy George, Carol Hammon, Karen Hammon, Linda Heggeman, Paula LaBrayere, Kara Lewis, Bev Lucks, Carolyn Nissing, Charlene Nissing, Kathy Roberts, Rhonda Roeder, Linda Roehrs, Penelope Pitstop ' 'Hiya, Conies! 11 Karen Smith seems to be saying as these drama students perform a skit from Saturday Nite Live. Other skits presented by the dept, were scenes from The Wizard of Oz and Hee Haw. ' 'Did he choke? 1' Mrs. Beach wonders as Dr. Ellis treats his taste buds to some foreign pastries during the FLC bake sale. This is the first year in which actual foreign pastries were sold. The Best of Show Award went to Sherry, who displayed of a number of paintings. Industrial Arts got into the act by displaying some of their constructive work. Vocal Ensembles all new Swing Choir swung into action performing numerous hits from the 40's to the 70's. Kelly and Ron look at the different kinds of pottery made by the Arts and Crafts classes. Festival Of The Arts 1978-79 Chamber Choir, under the direction of Molly Williamson, sang their way into the hearts of the audience. Jazz Band II, lit the fuse when they performed numerous tunes of jazz and blues. A critic admires the paintings and drawings displayed by the art classes. Kelly is caught off guard as she pauses a brief moment during her painting demonstration. Another student demonstrating how to paint was Janet, here she is showing concentration is very important. Overall the Arts Festival was a smash kit. All of the art students worked hard all year long to make the Festival of Arts as successful as it turned out to be.
