After losing their first game to Wellsville they came back strong to win the next four games. They lost two heartbreakers at the end of the season and closed the season with four wins and three losses. In the first home game of the season the Warrior fans saw a one-hit shut-out victory over the Montgomery Wildcats. The last game, a 2 to 1 loss to Hermann, was also a thrilling pitching duel. The team members worked hard to earn their victories and they along with Coach Boeker deserve a lot of credit for their determination. Compliments TURNER TV and HENKE CLEANERS 26 BACK ROW: L. Roth. FFA The F.F.A. is an organization composed of boys who are interested in acquiring a technical knowledge of agriculture. Our national organization is composed of many local chapters whose goal is to promote more interest in agriculture. Warrenton's chapter participated in various projects throughtout the year. The Barn- warmin' and Parent-Son Banquet proved to be the social high lights of the year. As a group project the chapter is working on a wild life demonstration plot for the protection of wild life. Some honors received by members of the chapter include the following: state farmer degrees awarded to Paul Gausmann and Eddie Hambach, local foundation awards for dairy farming and public speaking, Albert Hasenjaeger, soils and water management. Dean Summers, farm mechanics, Paul Gausmann, chapter star farmer, Eddie Hambach, and DeKalb Agricultural Award, Paul Gausmann. Officers of the chapter were: President, Melvin Roewe; Vice-President, Chas, Redecker; Secretary, Paul Gausmann, Treasurer, Eddie Hambach; Reporter, Neil Wright; Sentinel, Ralph Wolff; Advisor, Mr. Pewitt. Courtesy C.J. HARRIS LBR. CO. and MISSOURI EDISON 27 The National Honor Society is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The sponsor of the local chapter this year was Mr. Ernest Eastman. The aims of the Honor Society are to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of Warrenton High School. The Honor Society also plans and presents the Honors Assembly, at the close of school, at which outstanding students are recognized. This year a twenty page booklet was published which listed every student who was outstanding in some field of worthy endeavor. Membership in the chapter is limited to juniors and seniors who have an average of S or above in scholarship and have been approved by the faculty as to service, leadership, and character requirements. Sophomores may join on probation. Courtesy MILDRED'S YOUTH SHOP and DAIRY CASTLE i LET THE PRESSES ROLL! During the first few months of school the task of publishing the annual Wahisho came into being. The staff is a voluntary organization in which any hard-working student can participate. Joan Reynolds, assistant editor of the 1956 Wahisho, became the editor, and Jan Herlinger was elected assistant editor. The staff chose Wesley Brun as business manager. After the staff was organized work began. The volunteers were divided into two sections; the production staff and the sales staff. The duties of the sales staff were to sell ads which helped to finance the yearbook and to sell the books themselves. The sales staff wishes to express its thanks to the Warrenton business men who so generously sponsored the ads in the Wahisho. The salesmen then tackled the job of selling the books, and could be seen during December, January, or February busily writing out receipts. With the necessary funds assured, the production staff began its work of assembling the pages and preparing the layouts. The Co-Sponsors, Mr. Zey and Mr. Ogle, deserve a lot or credit for their patience and untiring efforts It was a year of long hard work but at last the 1957 Wahisho was a reality. Compliments FREDJASPERING and MIDWESTERN TELEPHONE CO. 29 FHA The local chapter of the Future Homemakers of America consists of eighty-four girls. The F.H.A., a national organization composed of many chapters such as Warrenton's, works to further projects in the interest of homemaking among teenagers. Officers for 1956-57 were as follows: Sub-District President, Pat Kersten; President, Margie Stonebarger; Vice-President, Judy Perry; Secretary, Joyce Blake; Treasurer, Grace Behrendes; Historian, Helen Boone; Song Leader, Mary Beth Wise; Reporter, Grace Schwane. The chapter mothers were Mrs. Marie Shaw and Mrs. Gilbert Turner. In January, we had a successful box supper sponsored in co-operation with the F.F.A. During the popular month of April, the organization sponsored a St. Patrick Party for the faculty and the F.F.A. boys. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Neil Wright as F.H.A. King for 1957. The girls also presented the fashion show with the theme being April Dream of Fashions . Other projects included selling homemade candy and Christmas corsages which helped provide funds for our local F.H.A. activities. Compliments MILDRED’S HATCHERY and REXALL DRUG STORE 30 TOMAHAWK STAFF The Tomakawk Strikes Today I This monthly sign on the bulletin boards was greeted with cheers by W.H.S., readers. For only 5$ the students could read current news, editorials, reports, fashions, the ever popular Snoop , and many other entertaining features. The staff was composed of twenty -four students from all four classes of the high school. Each staff member was assigned a specific duty which corresponded with his or her interests. Arthur Ray Schaper, Tomahawk editor, and Tom Nieburg, assistant editor, did their jobs efficiently and well. They attribute much of their success to Mrs. Helms, the sponsor, whose hard work and co-operation encouraged the entire staff. Courtesy DR. MRS. S.E. STOLLER and SCHOWENGERDT’S BAND 1956-57 was busy and successful year for the Warrenton High School Band. The director was Mr. Martin, who worked long and hard to help the band members in their numerous activi- ties. Seventy-one high school and junior high school students participated in the band. To become a band member it was necessary to complete a system of technique studies. During the summer the band gave weekly concerts for the people of the community. The band displayed its marching ability in downtown parades, the Missouri-Oregon football game, the Marching Festival at Hannibal, and stunts performed at several home basketball games. The Christmas Concert, the Spring Concert, and the End of School Concert were three other activities in which the group participated. The band received a II honor rating at the State Music Contest. Their selections were Ecossaise and Sea Portrait . Officers were: Joan Reynolds, president; Phyllis Jones, vice-president; Jane Reinhardt, secretary; Carol Ann Hummel, treasurer; Sharon O'Sullivan, head librarian; Karen O'Sullivan, reporter; Charles Redecker, student director; Cindy Brun, uniform sergeant; and Roger Dean, property manager. MIXED CHORUS The mixed chorus was organized as a voice class in September with 101 enrolled. A Performing group of 71 voices developed from this class. From this group were taken the two glee clubs which performed as groups also. The mixed chorus participated in the annual Christ- mas Program and pageant, appeared at P.T.A. twice during the year, helped present one of the largest Spring Concerts on record, and gave a good account of themselves at the Con- ference, District, and State Festivals. The mixed chorus came through State competition with a I rating, of which we are all justly proud. Its annual appearance for baccalaureate service rounded out the very successful year. Courtesy F.W. It is very doubtful I Speaking of spirit—those twenty-six girls practically will the boys to win 1 Boos are taboo in the Pep Squad I Each member is very proud of Warrenton's reputation of good sports- manship. A basketball game just naturally calls for a hot dog, so the Pep Squad's money-making project is a food stand. The squad members take turns giving service with a smile. With the funds gained from this endeavor, a Pink Tea was given at the end of the year in honor of the retiring members. Also the annual Pep Squad Banquet and Party was enjoyed by members of the teams and the Pep Squad members. We can't forget Mrs. Zey the ever faithful sponsor. Much of the Pep Squad's success was due to her hard work. To Mrs. Zey and the Pep Squad we'd like to say, Thanks for a job well done. WARRIORS The Warriors, under the guidance of Coach Boeker, used a team of five seniors and four juniors. The boys played twenty-five games including tournaments at California, Bowling Green, and Warrenton. The team closed the season with a 4-21 won and lost record. Although they lost more games than they won, the boys early captured the admiration of their followers by their scrappy play and determination. Karl, Taynor, Niemeyer, Russell, and Dothage will be lost by graduation but there are enough reserves for a fine team next year. All games were played in the tournaments at Clopton, Laddonia, and Silex. The girls won two consolation trophies. During the first games it was found that several of the team were talented enough to play both forward and guard. Combined with the other girls' abilities this factor brought a winning season. At the close of the season Judy Peery and Joyce Blake were elected co-captains. Only five of the team will graduate, leaving excellent possibilities for next year's team. I Compliments ELMER SPRICK. PAPOOSES The Papooses got off to a rousing start by winning their first three games. Although the boys slowed up and won only six out of fourteen games, they showed good prospects for the future. The team had lots of pep and fight for freshmen and sophomores. Even when victory was just out of reach the boys fought to the final buzzer. Of the fourteen conference games the team racked up five victories, and won one of three games played in the Warrenton tournament. Palitzsch and Walser were elected honorary co-captains at the close of the season. Courtesy DR. MRS. H. F. HOELSCHER and MOBLEY IMPLEMENT COMPANY BACK ROW: C. jetton. G. Dothage. K. Wessel.
