Published by Students of WARRENTON HIGH SCHOOL FOREWORD This is the story of one short span in our enthusiastic young lives. Written and pictured in the sometimes frivilous episodes of carefree youth and again in the quieter more serious moments of considered judgment. When time has caused our memories to fade we shall come here to recall those days that were never meant to be forgotten. The winners then met in a play-off game. Our Warriors had a good season in winning two of their games in their division. However, this was not good enough to get them into the play-offs. Bowling Green handed the Warriors their only loss in winning all three of their games and was the division champion. The Warriors defeated Elsberry, 9 to 4, in the first game and Troy, 6 to 0, in the second. The third and deciding game went to Bowling Green, 5 to 3. Bill Remmert did most of the pitching and did a very good job. George Gerdeman and Bill Remmert led the hitters with averages of . 454 and . 444. The Tomahawk staff is composed of students from all four classes in high school. It is published every four weeks. Its purpose it to relate to the students the interesting events and happenings in and around school. Such things as sports, current news, editorials, fashion news, news from the organizations and classes, and a section for the snoop , jokes, and the inquiring reporter provide interesting reading for the students. At the beginning of the year the staff changed the name to The Tomahawk and added an attractive cover and drawings by the staff artists to each issue. George Gerdeman, editor, and Joyce Harrison, business manager, express their appreciation to the staff and Mrs. Helms, the sponsor, for their help during the year. 27 The Warrenton Chapter of the Future Farmers of America has been affiliated with the state and national organizations for fifteen years. It is made up of boys taking vocational agriculture and carrying on supervised farming programs. This year the chapter participated in the Sub-District, Purina, District, and State contests. The parliamentary team, public speaker, and chapter books were entered in the Sub-District meeting. Five judging teams; livestock, dairy, poultry, meats, and soils, all won group I ratings at the District Contest at Rolla. The poultry team was high team in the contest. The soils team won a group I at the State. The meats and poultry teams won group II, and the dairy team a group III. Glen Winter was runner-up in the State Soil and Water Man- agement Contest. He was also interviewed for the office of vice-president of the Rolla District in the state organization. In addition to the judging contest the boys participated in other activities. They held their annual barnwarming in the fall and the Parent-Son Banquet in the spring. Bill Remmert was the only starter left from last year's team. This inexperience hurt and showed up in several games lost by three to six points at the first of the season. The team wound up with a 12-17 won and lost record. Al- though they lost more games than they won the boys early captured admiration of their followers by their scrappy play and determination. As far as attendance was concerned the Warriors had their best year in quite a while. The Warriors took third in the Clopton Tourney and fourth in the sub-regional. They failed to place in the California Tournament and had to be satisfied with fourth place in their own invitational tourney. Remmert, Gerdeman, Juergensmeyer, and Blaue, of the starting five, will be lost by graduation leaving only Twiehaus to build next year's team around. Bill Remmert was elected honorary captain at the end of the season. R. Garrett. D. Miltenberget, G. Gerdeman, G. Dothage, L. Roewe, B. Juergensmeyer, D. Twiehaus, B. Remmert, D. Blaue, L. The Warrenton High School Band continues to be one of our most popular organizations. The membership of fifty-two have worked hard during the past year to develop an effective playing organization. Beginning and intermediate bands are continual feeders for this group and supply it with recruits to replace loss through graduation. The Band Boosters continue to support our growing instrumentation to a remark- able degree. A baritone sax, a new bass drum and a pair of tympani were purchased for us by this enthusiastic organization this year. Fully equipped and in full-dress uniform the band presents a striking and color- ful support for its dynamic playing. Last fall it took part in Band Day at the Univer- sity of Missouri and was a guest for the Indiana-Missouri football game. It presented summer concerts on the court-house lawn, at various picnics and the Warren Co. Fair. During the school year it presented The Christmas Party in December, presented a number of half time shows at basketball games, appeared in the annual spring concert, and participated in the annual spring contests. This year the band received a I rating at the District Music Contest at Kirksville and a II rating for its entry at the State Music Contest at Columbia. This is considered an honor rating for which each member is entitled to a state medal. Band Officers were Jack Moulder, President; George Gerdeman, Vice-President; and Joan Reynolds, Secretary-Treasurer. The band plans to present concerts this summer as do the beginning and intermediate bands. These concerts along with recitals of individual performances have become very popular with the people of our community. 31 The purpose of the Future Home Makers of America is to promote a growing appreciation for the joys and satisfactions of homemaking by encouraging democ- racy in home and community life. The officers this year were: Imogene Wright, President; Joyce Meyer, Vice- President; Itha Jean Vahrenberg, Secretary; Ardith Knapheide, Treasurer; Virginia Engelage, Reporter; Ruth Bussey, Song Leader; Lillian Gerding, Parlia- mentarian; and Pat Kersten, Historian. The Chapter Mothers are Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Bussey. The F. H. A. Adviser is Miss Lucille Schebaum. The motto of the organization is Toward New Horizons ; the colors are red and white; and its flower is the red rose. The organization sponsored a Sweetheart Party for the faculty and the F. F. A. boys in February. The highlight of the evening was crowning Bill Remmert the F. H. A. King for 1955. The girls also presented the Fashion Show in April when they modeled the garments which they made. FIRST ROW, l£FT TO RIGHT: D. Russel, C. Czajkowski, I. Reinhardt, B. Schmitt, M. Garnet, H. GIRLS’GLEE CLUB Forty-two girls made up the glee club which met on Monday and Wednesday of each week of the school yearto study vocal fundamentals and music materials. Activities included for the most part those events of the school year in which the entire mixed chorus participated namely, the Christmas program, P. T. A, program, the operetta Ask the Professor , the annual Spring Con- cert, and the district and state contests. The Girls Glee Club came through with a first division rating at the district music contest qualifying it to partici- pate in the state contest where it received a second division rating. This state rating is considered an honor rating, entitling the membership to wear the red ribboned state vocal medallion. A girls sextet was organized to help meet the many demands of end of school year activities. The group consists of Barbara Schmitt, Dorothy Russell, Jane Reinhardt, Joan Hummel, Pat Kersten, and Joan Reynolds. 33 m siiiMii The Pep Squad has one main purpose in mind, to boost the team to victory. When the opposing team is strong and the going is tough we work all the harder. Not only do we urge our teams to greater effort, we also bring color, drama, and excitement to the games. We help to add that certain some- thing called school spirit to our athletic activities. The cheerleaders put in hours of practice and suffer many inflamed throats getting yells ready and whipping the squad into shape. The girls have another responsibility, which is taking care of the food stand at home games. The profit is used entirely for transporting the girls to out of town games and for the banquet for the basketball teams at the end of the season. The officers this year were: Marilyn Mossop, President; Joyce Harrison, Secretary; Ardith Knapheide, Treasurer; and Mrs. Cowell, Sponsor. FIRST ROW. LEFT TORIGHT-THE CHEERLEADERS: Joyce Harrison. MIXED CHORES The mixed chorus organized with the opening of the school term to meet on Friday of each week. Its membership numbered sixty-six students distributed in a well balanced four part choral group. The activities were many and varied. At Christmas time there was the Human Christmas Tree , the Vocal-Instrumental show Christmas Party , and the Carol Chorus for the Christmas Play. In the early spring the operetta Ask the Professor was presented and enthusiastically received by the community. Soon after the operetta there followed the annual spring concert and the contests. It participated in the conference music festival at Vandalia and with its entry at the district contest at Kirksville qualified to enter the state contest at Columbia. There it won first division rating with a I in sight- reading to help substantiate it. Division one and two are considered honor ratings and this rating of excellent won them the privilege of wearing the blue ribboned state vocal medallion of which we all are exceedingly proud. The mixed chorus capped the school year by presenting the baccalaureate music in a polished manner at commencement time. 35 The Warriorettes still have a young team of freshmen and sophomores with only one junior in the starting line-up. They were able to add three games to their schedule this year and still come up with a pleasing six and five won and lost record. Phyllis Jones stepped into the guard spot left vacant by last year's senior and performed ably her first year. She teamed up with Blake and Perry to make a trio of good sophomore guards. Squeaky Koelling continued to furnish most of the scoring punch but got a lot of help from Huber, Wright, Young, and Reynolds. The girls were especially proud of the second place trophy they won at the Clopton Tourney. They were plagued by an irregular schedule. It was impossible to arrange games each week because of the scarcity of girls' teams in the near by schools. With the team virtually intact for next year the Warriorettes should come up with a real winner, especially if they can arrange a regular and full schedule. George Gerdeman, Editor Plans for the 1955 Wahisho were made early in the fall. At the first meeting Jack Moulder was elected assistant editor. Ardith Knapheide was elected business manager. George Gerde- man, who was last year's assistant editor, be- came the editor. Financing methods were decided upon and the business staff began its advertising campa- ign. The business men were very generous in their support of our project. Next came the job of selling the books. After a good sales job nearly every student was sold. With the necessary funds assured the pro- duction staff began its work of assembling the pages and preparing the layouts. Mr. Zey, our sponsor, arranged for or took the pictures. So after a long and arduous year of work the 1955 Wahisho finally became a reality. 37 HTIIHU HONOR SOCIETY The Warrenton National Honor Society was organized in 1950. This organization is based on Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. Students must acquire these traits to become a member of the society. A scholastic average of an S is also a requirement. Members are initiated in the spring of the year, and must be at least a sophomore. This organization has various activities during the year, and also sponsors the Honors Assembly each year. N.H. S. General Aptitude Tests were taken by Leroy Roewe and George Gerdeman. BOYHLEE CLUB Twenty-two boys make up the membership of the boys glee club which met on Tuesday and Thurdsay of each week of the school year to study vocal fundamentals and music materials. Activities included for the most part those events of the school year in which the entire mixed chorus participated, namely, the Christmas program, P. T. A. program, the operetta Ask the Professor the annual Spring Concert, and the conference, district and state contests. The boys glee club received a rating of II which is classified as superior. Although the boys didn't make state this time they proved that they can read music by receiving a I rating in sight-reading. 19 IMI1 IMI SEN The Papooses have the honor of being the winningest team this year. Led by Glen Dothage they piled up an enviable 17-5 won and lost record. The boys missed Glen when he was used on the A squad during the last part of the season. Donald Miltenberger proved to be one of the most improved boys on the squad when the new season opened. He added a lot of scoring power to the team. Lefty Raymond Karl, a new man on the team, came along fine. His left handed shots from the corners were thrilling. Bill Taynor became a steady and more adept pivot man. Forster and Russelrounded out the starting team which showed a great deal of promise for next year's Warriors. Coach Helms had a large squad and many of the boys were able to get into only a few games. They got some experience though and should find themselves a spot for next year. FRONT ROW: L. Oberheilmann, J. Jaspering, M. Cameron, W. Duckworth, B. Miller. 41 mcK Two factors combined to make our track season a short one and not too good. The weatherman absolutely refused to cooperate. The cool rainey weather kept the boys away from the track too much. No one was able to get into tiptop shape. The team was able to take part in only two meets, a triangular meet at Bowling Green and the Conference Meet also at Bowling Green. The weather and other events even crowded out the spring intramurals. The other factor was the green team. Coach Helms had only a handful of veterans out for this sport. However, the large number of freshmen and sophomores that reported for practice makes the team look good for the future. Because of the unfavorable weather conditions no one could get ready for either the state or outdoor meets. Next year is another year, however, and we expect to find the War- riors back in the winning column in this sport as in former years. FRONT ROW; E. Russell. G. Unnert, D. Blaue, B. Taynor, P. This was ably managed by the seniors assisted by the under- classmen. After the annual freshman par- ade they and the upperclassmen assembled on the courthouse lawn for the freshman stunts and penal- ties. That evening the seniors held an all-school dance in honor of the youngest class. TOP: On the courthouse lawn pre- paring for the stunts and penalties. This was the first produc- tion of its kind presented by the department and was well received by the public. It was the story of a poor washerwoman's daughter try- ing to get through college. Her expenses were being paid by a fictitious aunt, actually two of her student friends. Marita, really a fine student earned the enmity of the Pro- fessor. Late in her senior year she was chosen queen and to attend the ball she had to have a chaperone. When she asked her aunt to serve the whole plot had to be revealed. Of course everything was straight- ened out by asking The Pro- fessor, who forgot past dif- ferences and pitched in to help. To the left: The King and his court. N. Wright, I. Vahrenberg, I.
