IHDOSSIW ‘N01N1UHVM 100HGS H3IH N01N1IISVM What is high school? To some it is an opportunity to learn and add to their store of knowledge. To others it is meeting people and making friendships. To still others it is athletics, or social activities To all of us it is both an opportunity and adventure. We have tried to capture many facts of high school life and preserve themforyou in this volume--Your 1954 W ASHISHO. THE STAFF FACULTY CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS ADVERTISING POTPOURRI 1. BASEBALL The schools of the East Missouri Conference play a single round of baseball in the fall for the championship. The Warriors had only a fair season with two wins and fou losses. They won from Elsberry and Vandalia. Weak defense and uncertain pitching hurt the team. It committed twenty-five errors in six games. These had much to do with the poor showing made by the pitchers. Troy defeated the Warriors in the best game of the season. This game featured good pitching and good hitting. While each team collected only five hits six of the ten were for extra bases. Luecke led the team in hitting with a . 542 average. He was followed by Dothage with . 333 and Lanzone with . 318. Hedeman had the best pitching record with one win and no losses. Remmert won one and lost one, while Luecke had no wins and three losses. It is made up of boys taking vocational agriculture and interested in farming. It is one of the largest organizations in our school. Besides the usual farm interests the boys participate in public speaking, practice par- liamentary procedure, do accurate record keeping, and sponsor a number of important events during the school year. Two of the largest are the Annual Barnwarming and the Parent-Son Banquet. Many of our boys have taken part in the Sub-District Judging Contests, the Annual Contests at Purina Farms, the District Contests at Kirksville, and the State Contests at Columbia. This year the Poultry Team won a beautiful Loving Cup at Purina Farms. The Treasurer's Book, Dairy Judging Team, Livestock Team, and Soils Judging Team won I ratings at the District Meet this year. The Soils Team went to the State Contests. Elmer Schroer was fourth high individual at the Kirksville Contests in soils. The Chapter has had one National Farmer and nine State Farmers. Glen Winter is the only State Farmer enrolled this year. WARRIORS The Warriors had a fine season again this year. They finished with a 26-4 record. Two of the losses were in the conference and cost them the championship. The other two were in the sub-regional and cost them the chance to go to the State Series. As is the case with good teams all losses are likely to be crucial. Except for these two occasions the Warriors were invincible as they piled up victory after victory. They captured the titles in the Warrenton, California, and Eldon Tourneys. This is the second title in three years at California. They had to be satisfied with second place last year. Two members of the squad have won All-State honors. Larry Luecke was placed on the Second All-State Team last year and Ronald Wegener won that honor this year. Luecke, Wegener, Roedder, Hedeman, Anson, and Dreyer will be lost by grad- uation but there is enough strength left in the squad for another fine team next year. Kenny Roedder, Larry Luecke, and Allan Hedeman were elected as honorary co-captains at the close of the season. I TEAM FRONT ROW; Roedder, Remmert, Wegener, Luecke, Hedeman. TOM-TOM STAFF The Tom-Tom was designed to give the students news of the events that take place in our school. It furnishes them with sports news, fashion news, class and organization news, and gossip. The Tom-Tom staff publishes our paper every three weeks and sends several sub- scriptions to former students. We sell approximately 150 copies of the Tom-Tom to students, faculty and patrons. We had a very successful year, thanks to the able assistance of Mrs. Helms, our sponsor. 28 FIRST ROW, FROM LEFT: P. McRae, P. Jones, M. Lloyd, N. Nieburg. SECOND ROW: B. Schwarze, K. Linke, M. It has developed in the past four years to the point where it can now give a good account of itself anywhere. There are now over fifty members and there is a large group in the beginning and intermediate bands which will probably increase this number. With the help of the Band Boosters it has been outfitted with new gray trousers to go with maroon coats and caps. It is a nifty group when it gets all dressed up. Last fall the band took part in Band Day at the University of Mo. Other activities include playing for assemblies, playing at fairs and picnics, and entering the spring music festivals. This year it received a II rating in the district festival at Kirks- ville. One of the most striking events is the Formal Concert and Coronation. The band king and queen are crowned in formal ceremonies and the band gives a concert. This summer as in times past, a series of eight evening concerts is being planned. They will be held on the court house lawn. These have been very popular with the people of our community. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS UF AMERICA The purpose of the Future Homemakers of America is to promote a grow- ing appreciation of the joys and satisfaction of homemaking. Each year the organization sponsors a party for the faculty and the F. F. A. boys and a Fashion Show. This year it gave A Winter Wonder-land Dance in December. The highlight of the party was the crowning of Leroy Roewe the F. H. A. King for 1954. The Fashion Show was held in May. The girls modeled the garments which they made. This year the F. H. A. held two bake sales to raise funds. Part of the money was used to add draperies in our Home Ec. Department. The F.H. A. colors are red and white, its flower is the red rose, and its motto is Toward New Horizons . FRONT ROW: D. Dyke, A. Hambach. M. Garvert, I. Wright. S. Reinhardt. J. Smith. R. Bussey. D. Smith. R. It is smaller than a number of the other groups but makes up for its lack in size by putting a lot enthisiasm into its singing. In fact, interest and enthusiasm, next to good singing, have become its most outstanding characteristic. This year was no exception and the boys did themselves proud by winning a I rating at the district music festival at Kirksville, and I rating at the state meet in Columbia. It, of course, has many good voices as shown by its work and the fact that four of the boys singing as a quartet also went all the way with I ratings. PEP SQUAD Try to imagine a basketball game with no cheering section! Then you will quickly realize the importance of this organization in school life. It is the onlf organized group for promoting school spirit at a sports event. The Pep Squad furnishes leadership in arousing team spirit and is the core of the yelling section. Its spirit and leadership are often taken for granted but it is none the less appreciated by the players and spectators. A great deal of time is spent in practice and preparation for each game. You will find the girls at every conference game and most of the tournament games, if they can get there. This year the Squad ran the food stand at each home game, gave a banquet for the teams, and bought and had mirrors installed in the restrooms at the high school building. Each year one or more projects are attempted in addition to leading the cheering. A part of the success enjoyed by the Pep Squad may be attributed to the hard work done by the officers and sponsor. Officers this year are: Marian Lichten- berg, President; Patty Brown, Secretary-Treasurer; and Mrs. Zey, Sponsor. CHEERLEADERS: Joyce Meyer, Marian Lichtenberg, Patty Morhaus, Harrietta Young, Jeanne Schmidt. MIDDLE ROW; Ruth Schmitt, Shirley Reinhardt, Jane Reinhardt. With such a large group one might expect the quality of the singing to suffer. Such, however, was not the case. This group always gave a good account of itself both in contests and before the student body. It sang No Man Is An Island and Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho at Kirksville and won a II rating. It also furnished music for the Baccalaureate Service. On this occasion it sang No Man Is An Island and Sing And Re- joice in a very fitting manner. 33 TEAM FRONT ROW: Munford, Burgci Brown, H. Young (Capt.), Koelling, Peery. BACK ROW; Harrison, Lichtenberg, Blake, Coach Helms, Kersten, J. Young, Wright. VVARHIQRETTES All of last year's starting line-up was graduated last spring and the team lacked experience. The Warriorettes were slow in starting to win. What was missing in experience the girls tried to make up in spirit and the will to win. The team showed improvement from the beginning of the season and soon was turning in victories. The Warriorettes do not belong to a conference and games are hard to get. For that reason most of their games were played in tournaments. After losing to Francis Howell in a home game and Silex in the Bell- flower Tourney they found the winning combination and took consolation in the Clopton Tourney. After losing to Montgomery City in the opener they defeated New London and Frankford for the consolation title. Their two final games were with Chamois, both of which were wins. This brought the season to a close with a 5-3 record. Only four of the squad are lost by graduation this year. This leaves plenty of promising material with some experience for next year. We are looking for an even better season. Harrietta Young was elected honorary captain at the close of the season. 34 PRODUCTION STAFF FRONT ROW: Agnes Hambach, Joyce Harrison, Joyce Meyer, Marcella Bruning, Donna Smith. Jerry Anson, who was assistant editor of the 1953 book, automatically became the new editor. George Gerdeman was elected assistant editor and Ronald Wegener business manager. The Staff was divided into the production and business sections. The business section sold the advertising and books while the production staff planned the book. Patty Brown was appointed book- keeper in charge of advertising and Betty Schwarze bookkeeper in charge of book sales. TRACK If numbers of students participating are any indication track is due for a come- back here at Warrenton. There has been too little interest in this fine sport for the past few years and a championship team would be most welcome. This year's squad was the largest in several years. It just missed placing third in the conference meet when the relay team was disqualified. The boys made a good showing in the two triangular meets held this year although they failed to win either of them. Hedeman set a new conference record in the half-mile and the 880-yd relay team got close to the old record. Allan Hedeman led as a point-getter with 38 1 4 for the season, Bud Juergensmeyer was second with 15 3 4, and Larry Luecke was third with 15 1 4. One of the events that shows a great deal of promise is the intramural meet between the classes. The seniors won this year but the other classes made good showings for themselves. Luecke, R. Lanzone, Roedder, Reynolds, and Gerdeman were absent when the picture was made. TEAM FRONT ROW: Buxton, Dothage, Stapleton, Hedeman, Ellis, Miltenberger, G. Lanzone. Its purpose is to encourage leadership, good character, high scholar- ship, and service to others among the students. To become a member a student must hold a scholastic average of S or above. Then he must receive a favor- able vote from a majority of the faculty as to his leadership abilities, his character, and service to his school. Some of the activities during the year were; a hamburger fry, initiation of new members, and attending the Cinerama in St. Louis. This organi- zation sponsors the Honors Assembly held each year in May. Patty Brown and Kenny Roedder took the NHS General Aptitude Test. The officers this year were: Kenneth Roedder, President; Merle Wulff, Vice President; Betty Schwarze, Secretary; Ardith Knapheide, Treasurer; and George Gerdeman, Reporter. 37 GRADE BASKETBALL END PEP S UIIA I) FRONT ROW. A full conference schedule of games is played and the boys gain most of their experience in this way. In all conference games only freshmen and sophomores are eligible to play. When non-conference teams are played reserves from the varsity are sometimes used to strengthen the squad. This year's squad had an overall record of 11 wins against 9 losses. The conference record was 7 wins and 6 losses. In the non-conference tilts, the boys won three and lost two. In their own invitational tournament they lost the consolation to Pacific in the last seconds of the game. Their tournament record was one win and two losses. 39 FIRST ROW, FROM LEFT: G. Meyer, M. They were under the direction of Mr. Raymond Martin, a very highly qualified man in the field of music. This year, the girls entered the District Music Festival at Kirksville and the Conference Music Festival at Warrenton besides participating in numerous'other school activities. In the District festival they received a rating of II or superior. This is a very good rating considering the fact that there are so many glee clubs entered and only a certain percent of them can receive a I or excellent rating. The girls have earned a rating to be proud of and capable of earning a I next year thus enabling them to qualify for the State Music Festival. 40 BAND KING AND QUEEN Ronald Wegener and Betty Schwarze JUNIOR Itha Jean Vahrenberg and George Gerdeman ATTENDANTS SOPHOMORE Jane Smith and Jackie Moulder FRESHMAN Joan Reynolds and Glen Dothage GRADE SCHOOL Carol Ann Hummel and Tommy Nieburg IIII11H1 CONCERT CORONATION The Band in Action.
