1988 CARDINAL Warrensburg-Latham High School Warrensburg, Illinois Volume 65 111 Dreams In Motion Robin and Brenda celebrate the drcam-come-truc graduation day. Rick Jenkins traveled to Europe; the city of Edinburgh. Scotland is behind him. All fresh- men dream of such a reception into high school. The dreams of the students of WLHS have been realized in several ways. The football team made a memory by advancing to the state finals. The girls bas- ketball team and the boys basketball team advanced well into the state playoffs. Indi- vidual athletes were also outstanding. Scholastic dreams were also accom- plished. Some students achieved success on the scholastic bowl or math team. Others set goals in the classroom and were recog- nized as lop students in various subjects. For others, the dream was not found on football field or in a book. Instead, the dream in motion was the friendship formed with a locker mate, or the boy who sat in the third desk from the front, or the teacher who encouraged, or the principal who smiled. Although many dreams are yet to be re- alized, the 87-88 school year set many dreams into motion. 6 7 9 Hidden Helpers 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Mrs. Weiss. Secretary. Mrs. Bushey, Secretary. Football Has Record Year The Cardinals had a banner year, attaining many goals and achieving many firsts in the history of football at W-L. Led by coaches Alexander and Hatcher, the Cardinals pound- ed their way through the regular season and into the state playoffs. The season started with a bang with a victo- ry over Macon, 28-0. The second game, the loss to Argenta 33-24, turned out to be one of the most important games of the year. Jerome Berger said of this game: “In the second half of that loss, we did not give up, as we had so many times in the past. We had desire and a will to be the best.” In the third game, the Cardinals destroyed state-ranked Shelbyville; they then beat Tre- mont and then Peoria Heights. Homecoming was a total success as the Cards routed Eureka 48-15. Then came the Cards worst rival — St. Te- resa. The team that had beaten the Cards for over ten years straight went down 21-14. Sulli- van and Monticello were the next victims of the Cardinal rampage. In the state playoffs, the Cards played a close game at home against Tuscola, stuck it out, and won. They then got a taste of revenge by defeating Argenta at their place, 21-13. The Cards were in the quarter finals. They played Marshall away, before a tre- mendous Cardinal caravan. After the 31-7 win, the Cardinals were surprised with a re- ception in the gym. In the semi-final game, played at home, the Cardinals lost to an excellent Deer Creek- MacKinaw team. But the losers were winners. We made a memory. The MVP award went to The Team. The Outstanding Defensive Player award and the Charles Halford Lineman award went to Bubba Harmon. The Outstanding Offensive Player was Jerome Berger. Berger and Har- mon were named to the All Macon County Football team, and Berger was selected for the All State Football team. 2 1. The staff worked hard to get the yearbook pages done and. on the side, to produce a newspaper every quarter. Expressing one’s ideas is easy, but putting them down on paper can be difficult. We had our share of hard times, when ideas and goals clashed — like the time the brick wall cover ran into the dream cover. But we had some good times too — like the parties when deadlines were met. We hope that this year’s Cardinal will help you recall some of the dreams that this school year set in motion. A special thanks to Mrs. Jordan, our advisor; Kevin Harmon and Pam Pease, co-editors of the yearbook; and Tom Bryant and Jerome Berger, co-editors of the newspaper. Co-editor. Kevin Harmon. Student Council took care of that with a list of activities that varied from thir- teen dances, to three assemblies, to good works in the neighborhood. The well-at- tended dances included a Munster Mash, a Look-Alike, and St. Pat’s with green hats. Student council started the year with a freshmen welcome. This was followed by a successful Homecoming and a pumpkin decorating contest. At Christmas, students and parents decked the halls with Christ- mas around the world. In the spring, mem- bers held a breakfast for the teachers, col- lected for Easter seals, and delivered flowering plants to senior citizens for May day. The last week of school brought the rousing fun of Almost Anything Goes which was followed by a dance, the Last Blast of ’88. Two assemblies. Hands Off; I’m Special, and Shades were entertaining and informa- tive, while encouraging student self-esteem. Many of the songs were dedicated to past performers who sang in previous Then and Now pro- ductions. Applauded by an appreciative au- dience, the performers rang down the cur- tains on the final Then and Now with the Then and Now theme song “And When.” 57 The Band Plays On The band held three concerts: the Christmas concert, one in March, and the spring concert. The marching band was fea- tured in the Homecoming Pa- rade and performed at halftime at home football games. One of the favorite songs of the band was the fast paced “Impresario Overture” by Mozart. The pep band played at all the girls and boys basketball games — a to- tal of 19 games. They may have been small, but their sound was mighty. 1. Band members suit up. 2. Valedictorian Matthew Southern stated that educa- tion is an equal opportunity; each stu- dent can make of it what he can. Matt, recipient of the Fred Gilman choral award, sang “Graduation Day” for the 96 graduates and the crowd of family and friends that filled the gym. Board members Mr. James, Mrs. Pease, and Mrs. Wood handed out diplo- mas to the graduates and to their own children, Mindy James, Pam Pease, and Matt Wood. Class president, Dan Tyler, led the graduates in the changing of the tassel. Reverend Mr. Rose, father of gra- duate Dawn Rose, gave the benediction, reminding the graduates that nothing is as valuable as the friendships formed during their years at WLHS. Marching out to the strains of “Pomp and Circum- stance,” the 1988 graduates stepped into a future — for a few, the dream was the diploma; for most, the dream was just beginning. 91 7 Class of ’89 Starting To Make Dreams Come True Juniors spent their first year as upper classmen preparing for prom. Candy bars and gummy bears were sold to raise money. With the help of Mrs. Martin and Miss Butkovich, the juniors created a prom with memories to last a lifetime. 1. Arc we excited, Lisa? 2. Another happy re- ality is the class ring, which the sopho- mores ordered and received. Sure, the work is a little harder, but sophomores know it is in preparation for a happy future. I was scared of my classes being too hard, scared of older students, scared of no one liking me. These were some of the things I wor- ried about; things that people tried to scare me with. Now these sound foolish because I know that seniors aren’t that cruel and that classes aren't that hard — if you study. Being a freshman really isn’t as bad as 1 thought it would be. Actually, I think it’s pretty fun. Class officers: T. Rhodes, K. Cycotte. A. Bat- chcldcr, T. Ward. R.
