Yearbook Editor Lorri Miller Reach for the sky in whatever you do, and see your success in Cardinal '82! The purpose of this year's vibrant theme is to represent the positive highlights of 1981- 82 at Warrensburg-Latham H.S. It en- courages us to look to the future and be optimistic. When we strive to give the most and do our best, we are successful. With hard work we can eventually land a role in the Musical or make the winning basket. Only you can lead your life, so be proud of yourself and your accomplish- ments — and remember to always reach for the sky! Dennis Ater, Mrs. Jordan, Lorri Miller. 4 Cardinal 1981-82 proved to be a year of births” for WLHS. It included a new principal, many added activities, and color in the Yearbook. The Cardinal staff wanted to present a brighter yearbook. First, voted on Reach for the Sky as our theme. It then came time to choose a cover and endsheets. When this cover was brought before the staff, it was a unanimous decision that it would best express our theme. Fundraising was a hardship. Ad sales were not as high as last year. The energetic staff held a car wash, but when Mother Nature contributed her share of water, the car wash was not too profitable. The staff went home dripping wet if not from the rain, then from the wild water hose. The senior class contributed a portion of their trea- sury to the Cardinal. Final result — the double page color spread of the senior class. The cardinal on the title page was captured by photographer, Paul Skel- ley, after many hours among the trees. Despite minor setbacks, the Cardinal staff con- stantly sought to give WLHS a quality yearbook for 1982. We reached for the sky. 1. This is the time we have looked forward to for quite a few years. It is our turn, the Class of '82, to graduate. It is our turn to face the world and all its challenges. We have been preparing for our adult- hood for eighteen years. As we graduate, we are faced with many decisions concerning our future. There are many paths from which to choose. Which will we follow? Each of us is unique. Some will work at leading happy, productive lives. Others will be faced with harsh problems. But we can overcome these obstacles as long as we are determined to suc- ceed, to reach for the sky. Lorri Miller Toni Black — Band Scholarship, Illinois State Scholar. Baccalaureate Graduation 27 CLASS OF '83 Juniors Strive for Goals Junior year is different. With it comes the realiza- tion that high school is almost over. We begin to feel somewhat nostalgic about WLHS. We wish we'd done some things differently, and some things not at all. We make plans that will affect the rest of our lives. We hope, dream, strive, reach — we reach for the sky. As part of the ‘middle bunch,' it was our turn to take some required Sophomore courses. Health taught us safety and First Aid techniques. We were able to discover the marvels of speechmaking in the Sophomore English classes. Drivers Ed was a favorite because it enabled us to receive our license. The Vaudeville Troupe, hand in hand, while John sings of his dream. 50 Musical Professor Fennerstein’s Magical Musical was the title of this year’s musical sponsored by the High School Chorus. The musical was based upon the dealing of dreams. Ben (John Poling) was selected from the audience by Professor Fennerstein (Bill Barnes) and Murray Bodger (Pat Humphrey) to go on stage and fulfill his fantasies. As in many young men’s dreams, Ben met a young lady, Amy (Lorri Miller) and fell in love with her. Ben and Amy married and had a baby. It would be nice to say that they lived happily ever after, but this was not the case. When their baby was stricken with an illness, out of desperation, Ben called upon the audience for support. If you BELIEVE,” he said, then your dreams will come true.” Musical 51 “Fathers. Mothers, Sisters, Brothers” was the title and theme of the 1982 production of Then and Now. The show featured music for the family, made by the family. The first half spotlighted early family singing: Gospel, vaudeville, a radio show, the Mills Brothers, and Andrew Sisters. The second half moved to more current times with the Mamas and Papas, the Car- penters, and the Bee Gees. The show ended with a salute to the late Harry Chapin. Some of these events were: the AFS picnic, the AFS fair at St. Teresa, and a spring swimming party. Lo- cally, the group participated in an autumn fund raising compaign. AFS had a foreign art display for the Fine Arts Fair held at the Middle School. Items from Kenya, Bolivia, and Thailand were in- cluded in the display. Officers were: Elane Stock, President: Kim Weltmer, Vice-President: Kristin Delaney, Secretary-Treasurer. My name is Marcos Oliva. I come from Tarija, Boliv- ia. My host family was the Donald Summers family who were wonderful people to live with. It is quite difficult to tell what my feelings and thoughts are now that my AFS year is almost over. I have lived an experience that I could hardly forget. I have found or discovered so many new things that it would take a while to name them. The most impor- tant thing that I discovered was that even though I was a long way from home, I did not have time to feel left out. I'm thankful to everybody — my family, all the members of the faculty, and all my friends. With- out your friendship and understanding, I wouldn't have made it. I hope to come back and see everybody again. During the summer of 1981, I lived in Mombasa, Kenya. Mombasa is the second largest city in the country and a beautiful island in the Indian Ocean. I lived with an African family that included cousins, nieces, and nephews. Their religion is Islam and I participated in many Moslem activities. The culture is very different from that of the United States. Their standard of living is very low in comparison. The ex- perience taught me a lot about Kenya and the U.S. as well. They put on a skit with the football players on Friday of Homecoming week to lift school spirits. The cheerleaders helped our hard-working athletes. They filled bags of candy for the football play- ers at Homecoming and prepared a pancake dinner for the basket- ball players. The cheerleaders also did things for each other. They pix- ied” each other, giving a small gift daily the week before Christmas. They also had a party to honor the senior cheerleaders. Cheerleaders 75 During the summer the wrestlerettes collected pledges, rode in a twenty mile bike-a-thon, and held a car wash to raise $600 for new uniforms. This, the second year for the squad, proved to be a successful year. The girls supported the wrestlers during the long, endless meets and cheered them on through the good and the bad, always managing to have a lot of fun. Pin ’em 76 Wrestlerettes Half-Time Highlights 1st year success The first year for the pom-pon squad was a big success. They did a variety of routines to songs such as: Take It To The Top, Elvira. She taught her first seven years in southern Illinois in grades one through eight. She began her twenty-two year teaching career at Warrensburg-Latham High School as an English teacher and then became librarian for the past fourteen years. Mrs. Garbs received her BS degree at Southern Illinois University and did additional work at the Uni- versity of Illinois and Illinois State University for accreditation in library science. She is looking for- ward to retirement and having more time to de- vote to her hobbies of reading, sewing, and cooking. She and her husband, Clint (also a retired teach- er), are planning to spend next winter in California en- joying the sunshine and smog. Myra Eisenbarth 106 Administration •Hr Dunnan — Dean of Students Mr. Dennis Clodi is a new face to us this year. Before coming to Warrensburg, as the new high school principal, Mr. Clodi was principal of Pope County High School. He started teaching as band director at the Reddick Grade School. He then became principal. Later he moved on to be- come the band director of Mazan High School where he became the assistant principal. Mr. Clodi graduated from Vander Cook Col- lege and studied at the University of Illinois. He is currently working on his doctorate in adminis- tration at Normal. Mr Clodi and his wife, Connie, are blessed with two children, Jeff and Michelle. Jeff is twelve and in sixth grade. Michelle is seven and is in first grade. This year Mr. Clodi started the Principal's Advisory Council so he could be more aware of stu- dent problems. He instituted the 7:30 a.m. de- tentions to make it easier for the teachers and less appealing for the students. He has also sus- pended fewer students. Mr. Clodi's effort resulted in community contributions for the student of the quarter awards. All in all, he did a fine job and is welcomed to our school.
