CARDINAL Yesterday Volume 57 1980 Warrensburg Latham High School Yesterday I entered high school Yesterday I used to think of high school as my ultimate goal. Something I only dreamed of. That was yesterday When life was filled with Cotton candy, ice cream cones, Saturday comics, a new best friend every week, and tennis shoes every day. Yesterday. I remember the feelings of nervousness, shyness, and changes that came with being a Freshman. I remember that by the time we were Sophomores, we thought we knew everything. As Juniors we hoped it would never end. As Seniors we were ready. Yesterday I walked the football fields and Halls of Warrensburg Latham. Today I am filled with memories. Yesterday I felt I had to impress the world. Today I know I have to only impress myself. Yesterday I had many acquaintances. Today 1 have learned of close friendships. Yesterday I was a fan in the stands. Today Nobody may be watching but I am reaching for the stars. Yesterday I dreamed the impossible. Today I know what is possible. Yesterday I just entered high school. Today I'm set to paint my future. Teresa Schrodt 2 Yesterday Today I’m set to paint my future Seniors 1. The first day was T-shirt, Rolled-up jeans and Wild Socks Day. Then came Circus Day with an amazing assortment of clowns and fat men roaming the halls. Punk-Rock, Hat and Stuffed Animal Day were the highlights of the week. On Friday students showed their winning spirit by wearing red and gold. The victors in competition were the seniors who won the spirit stick at the pep rally and the juniors who took first prize for the best float. Friday evening our defense really showed their stuff. Unfortunately, so did Tolono-Unity as they defeated us 7- 0. The dance on Saturday finished out the week's activities with Silverfest providing the music. Homecoming 79 Chorus presents melodrama 3 1. Added to their talents were the experience, musical ability and enthusiasm of many students. JS R was pro- fessionally produced in the tradition of Then and Now. It took the audience on a musical journey, back to the jazzy roots of our modern music. The selections moved forward in time with a touch of Mexico and Herb Alpert, a nos- talgic salute to Nat King Cole, a little country and Willie Nelson, and ended with a rousing Vil- lage People medley. The Dixie Red Birds, Cardi- nal Brass and Backup Band provided the jazzy background music. The singers and dancers added some snazz and the razzamatazz was fur- nished by the production, publicity and business staff. Jazz Snazz and Razzamatazz provided a lively evening of syncopation and style in sight and sound. 4 Mucical 81 Juniors plan beautiful prom We’ve Got Tonight 1. Miles of crepe paper to be hung. 2. The survey was administered to the entire student body in January and focused chiefly on drug and al- cohol use. The results reflected the fact that 82% of the students had used alcohol at least once, with 162 students using it regularly and seven using it once or more a day. This is slightly below the national av- erage. The poll showed the favorite alcoholic beverage among WLHS students to be beer. The survey attested to the growing popularity of marijuana. Sixty per- cent of the students said they had at least tried it. The intensity of the new trend was confirmed by the fact that twice as many people admit- ted to using pot once or more a day as did the number that used alcohol that often. Only about a third of the students said they used drugs other than alcohol or marijuana. Just under half said they thought that marijuana should be legalized and the drinking age lowered from twenty one years. With the results of the survey came the realization that something needed to be done. A person was needed to bridge the gap between the students and their parents, a person who cared about the students, but most of all, a person who had been there and experienced what drugs can do. David Toma was that person. As an ex-cop from New York, Toma had seen it all. He knew what he was talking about. Over 2500 students from four county high schools gathered in the gym at Warrensburg on the morning of April 23. Mr. Toma had control of the audience from the word go and he packed a powerful message. Love your self. Drugs destroy—your body, your mind, your soul. He vividly illustrated the damage done to individuals who, be- cause of their dependence on drugs or alcohol, ruined their lives and bodies. He talked for almost two hours to a captive audience and, when he was through, several hundred students, some in tears, wished to speak to him privately. Others joined discussion groups, led by student leaders. Discussions dealt with individual problems and those of the community. David Toma's appearance, the result of community-school and adult- student efforts, has led to further plans to inform, educate and care for those who need support and help with drug related problems. Some members of Student Council wrote and conducted a drug survey. The results were published for our school, in the local media, and shared with other area schools. Other members were involved in painting colorful pictures on the cafeteria walls. The project was developed after each member worked in the cafeteria for two days. A representative from each class and our president visited Tolono-Unity High School to gain new ideas and to watch the activities of a typical day. We hosted students from their school in exchange. The Student Council successfully worked for student participation in school activities and encouraged interest in the concerns of students. 5 Row 1: Craig Southern, Keith Schrodt, Mike Tozer, April Smith, David Eisenbarth, David Schrodt, Anne Mooney, Leslie Waddell, Michelle Waller, Joy Cunningham. It seems like only yesterday that we at- tended the Herff Jones yearbook work- shop where many new ideas were in- troduced to us. We have tried some of these ideas in this year's book. Some new features are headlines at the top of each page, set layouts, folios at the bottom of each page, more copy, more captions, and the divider pages which we think add a special touch. Last fall we chose theme, cover and endsheets. Then we were ready to start selling ads. The state of the economy was evident and we learned to accept no as an answer. Next came the part of yearbook production that we met with mixed emotions—love hate—laying out pages, trying to meet deadlines, and wondering if pictures would come in time. So, as the last pages go off to the printer, we want to give special thanks to Miss Mehrtens who took many of the acitivity snaps and to Frank Albert who not only shot our divider pages but de- veloped and printed them as well. We hope you enjoy your yesterday. Ann Romer Editory of 1980 Cardinal 1. An editor's work is never done. 2. The faithful foursome. Mary Albert, Ann Romer, Lorri Miller, Alice McDowell. 3. But it wasn't all work and no play. AFS weekends were held throughout the state. Local activities included a progressive din- ner party and a Christmas party. We dedicate the AFS pages to Sam and Rosa. We will miss our two new friends. AFS officers are Vice-president Vicki Huber, President Scott Powell, and Secretary-trea- surer Jeanine Bode. 96 A.F.S. My summer in Germany was one I will never forget. I lived around Koblenz, a fairly good sized town on the Rhine River where the Mo- sel River joins it. The things I will miss most are the FOOD and the people. I hope to some day return there. Rosa Young Samantha Nicol During the summer of 1979, I lived for twelve weeks in Heat- hmont, Australia. I had two host brothers, ages eleven and thirteen, who participated in soccer. I had a little sister, age ten, who was in- volved in Irish dancing. My host father was a professional runner and an electrician. He often trained me in running. My host mum was a kindergarten teacher and great cook. I went to Heat- hmont High School were I played basketball and volleyball and at- tended many Australian rule foot- ball, soccer, lacrosse and netball games. I enjoyed myself yet learned a lot in the process. I am glad I went with AFS and encour- age others to do so. Scott Powell I come from Tequiciqalpa, Hon- duras and I have lived with the Bode family while here at WLHS. The year I spent here was great. I am thankful to everybody, espe- cially all the members of the fac- ulty and my friends who helped me a lot and gave to me under- standing, love and friendship. I hope some day to come back and see everybody again. Traveling, meeting new people, and knowing another custom was fun. I particu- larly enjoyed the sports, games, parties, swimming and art. My plan for the future is to be a civil engineer. Teresa Schrodt I came from Kingsbridge, England and have spent the year with the wonderful C. Ray Powell family. I have loved attending WLHS because it is a small school and everything is on a personal basis. School in the U.S. is easier and a lot less formal than in England. I have enjoyed most the friends I have made. I hope to re- turn some day and visit everyone again. During the week members sold carnations and wore red and white for Valen- tine's day. Members worked hard to be able to go on the spring trip. This year the group went to St. Louis where they visited Gateway Arch, the brewery, Good Times Theatre and Six Flags. FHA officers were Lisa VanDerVoort, President; Tracy Ford, Vice-President; Teresa Schrodt, Secretary; Vicki Wick- line, Treasurer. 98 F.H.A.
