1AM HIGH SCHOOL TH aO Volume 36 WARRENSBURG- LATHAM HIGH SCHOOL Warrensburg, Illinois Dedication To you, MRS. KITCHEN, our own “Miss History,” who has worked so tirelessly to make our school years more enjoyable, both in class and in extracurricular activities, we offer a sincere thank you and dedicate this 1959 Cardinal. 2 “Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time;” We, the Cardinal Staff, have chosen the above verse from Long- fellow’s A Psalm of Life as the theme for our 1959 yearbook. Each student who passes through our school leaves his own set of footprints for posterity — some are firm with a good sense of direction, some are wavering, and a few have no direction at all. As you “stroll” through our 1959 Cardinal, we hope you will find pleasure and enjoyment in its pages. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS — Standing: Linda Fry. Reporter; Helen Neumann. Treasurer. Seated: Floyd Faith. Vice-President; Jay Butt. President: Mr. Ligon, Sponsor; Pam Barclay. Secretary. Seniors of 1959 We, the Class of 1959, feel that we have contributed much to the success of the new school. We are proud to be the first class to complete our senior year in the new building. We have participated in every possible extracurricular activity and have had many talented people of the class contribute to athletics, music, and other activ- ities of the school. The major contribution of our class was the Senior Play, “Act Your Age,” which we know will be long remembered by the school. A tangible contribution of our class is the sidewalk from the school drive to the street. 4 JUDITH ANN ALBIN “Judy GAA 1, 2, 3, 4; Cardinette 4; Band 1, 2, 3, 4; Pep Band 2, 3; Honor Band 3, 4; Librarians Club 3, 4; President of Librarians Club 4; Camera Club 3; Pep Club 1; “Belles In Waiting”, Props 3; “Act Your Age” 4. SANDRA KAY ZINN “Sandy” SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY The Airy Post February 24, 1979 Word has come to us of the gala reunion of the W • L Class of 1959 which was held in EDIE RANDOLPH’S seaside estate near Miami, Flor- ida. SANDY CHAPMAN having finally grown enough to meet airline stewardess requirements, was able to acquire half price fares for class members’ flights down. JUDY BROWN, wife of a prosperous sheep rancher and oil millionaire in Oklahoma, wasn’t able to attend, and sent her regards with a cashmere sweater for each girl. GARY RAU, owner of Honest Smileys Stop ’n Swap Shop, was one of the door prize winners. The prizes were two pedigreed white poodles donated by KAY ISREAL, head nurse at the City Animal Hospital. The only guest caus- ing any trouble was LEON PURCELL, wealthy, New York playboy, who insisted on serving his own refreshments. LINDA DUSTIN, star of the Metropolitan Opera, canceled her engagement before the Queen of Eng- land to fly to the reunion. STEVE JANVRIN, having amassed a large fortune through his ingenious development of a new rocket fuel, was there. BILL BOYER, selected from thousands, was chosen to be the first man to try for the moon. Of course Steve’s rocket fuel made this trip possible. Bill radioed through his chief communications operator, FINLEY YOKLEY, that he could not make it to the reunion, but that he had kept an eye on the celebration. HANDY PEASE, uranium prospector in the Southwest, caused a great deal of excitement when he traced down uranium in Edie’s petunia bed. MARY INGRAM, missionary worker in India, was unable to attend because of her much needed help in mission- ary work. The celebrated movie actress and Oscar winner, MARIETTA LETTERLY, was there with her personal beautician, SANDY ZINN. JUDY ALBIN, Marietta’s press agent, was kept quite busy shielding the actress from ardent fans. KAREN BUCKLES appeared in one of her original La Petite After Five Fashions. Her model, SANDY EMERY, also caused a sensation in fashion news. LEON PIERSON, manufacturer of Willitgo Motorcycles, drove in escorting the President of the United States, JAY BUTT, and his body guard, DOUG FISHER. HELEN NEU- MANN, head of the Decatur Movement to Preserve the Transfer House, and LINDA FRY, owner of the Decatur Herald and Review, were pres- ent to represent Decatur. U.S. Senator, MARLENE BLOYE, could not attend as she was busy with the Committee of Foreign Affairs. PHYLLIS ANDERSON, recently appointed ambassador to Spain, was there, hap- pily receiving congratulations. The New Giants gave their pitcher, VERNON GALLOWAY, leave to attend the reunion. CAROLE ATCHI- 16 SON, hostess of the Hotel Astoria of New York, brought orchids for everyone. DORIS WOODS, stunt writer for television’s Beat the Clock, furnished lively games for everyone. Also present was JEANIE BRACKETT, chief investigator of the Pinkerton Agency. She solved the robbery of the cars from GLENN KOGER’S auto factory with the help of BARBARA BLACK, telephone operator. ERIK STOTTRUP. sports editor for the New York Times, arrived late after completing his assignment at the Australian Tennis Matches, where PAM BARCLAY won the women’s singles. After appetizers were served by MARY JO KROL, proprietor of the Eta Hunks Pie Sorority’s Teahouse, the guests cruised in JULIAN WILLIAMS’ Chris - Craft yacht to Havana, Cuba, where JOHN LEHN served a delicious dinner in his Heartburn Hut, designed by Julian Williams. Guests arriving late in Havana were LINDA TAYLOR, author of WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SAILORS; RON LUKENS, head of the Golfing Academy of Augusta. Georgia; STEVE CARBERRY, developer of the first compressed food pill; and FLOYD FAITH, owner of the Good Faith Contracting Co., which builds world known sidewalks. After John’s gigantic meal, the entertainment began. SANDY YOUNG, world’s best diver, exhibited her diving skills. Then JUDY BETZER gave dancing instructions to the guests while SALLY HURSH, famed concert pianist just back from a tour of Italy, accompanied the merry - making which was enjoyed by everyone very well. We are sorry that FRANK MUELLER and RICHARD WERMEL- SKIRCHEN were unable to attend our reunion. Frank is in Washing- ton, D.C. repainting the White House, the Capital Building, and many other buildings which are the symbol of our wonderful government. Rich- ard is installing a new type of furnace and air conditioning unit in the White House. 17 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS — Standing: Mr. Walters, Sponsor; Virginia Cheffer, Reporter; Roger Litchenberger, Treasurer; Mrs. Jones, Sponsor. Our play, “The Cannibal Queen,” was very well received and the Junior • Senior Prom went very smoothly also. We are particularly proud of our class members who participated in the various school activities; especially in athletics. We will try our best to set a good example for the underclassmen as have the classes of 1957, 1958, and 1959 done for us. The team won six games in a row by defeating Wapella, Niantic, Mt. Zion, Bethany, Lovington, and Cumberland. The first loss was to St. Teresa in the Holiday Tournament held at W - L’s new gymnasium. One of the most thrilling games of the season was the defeat over Niantic in the Macon County Tournament. W-L won the game by two points (59-57) in a double overtime, sudden-death playoff. W-L Cards shared the second-place trophy with Niantic in the Cenois Conference. W - L finished with a 11-16 record. We feel season will be that the Warrensburg-Latham a very promising one.
