AMY MUERMANN is a semi-finalist in the pro- gram, qualifying as one of only fifteen thousand semi-finalists that were chosen from more than a million entrants. AMY qualified by scoring 1380 on her PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) given her in the Fall of 1985. In the language portion, she scored a 770 from a possible 800. In the mathematics section, her score was a 610 from a possible 800. AMY’S qualification is from some nineteen thousand secondary school juniors throughout the United States. The top scorers in each state represent approximately a half of one percent of each state’s graduating seniors. As a semi-finalist, AMY produced her high academic performance in WARRENSBURG CENTRAL as well as her school and community activities, her interests and her goals in life. BRAVISSIMA! WE ARE PROUD OF YOU. AMY! Amy Muermann SARAH A. HAGGERTY is designated a COM- MENDED STUDENT in the 1987 National Merit Scholarship examination competition. SALLY qualifies within the top fifty thousand students of the more than one million participants. The National Merit Scholarship Committee states: The very high test performance of the young men and women who are honored as ‘Commended Students in the Merit Program’ is indicative of exceptional scholastic ability. We hope that NMSC’s recognition of these high school students will increase their motivation to make the best use of their talents and to develop the skills that will be needed by the future leaders of our nation. Being named a ‘Commended Stu- dent’ in this keen competition is a credit to these young citizens as well as to their schools, which play a key role in their development.” Both AMY and SALLY will continue in their competition for approximately six thousand schol- arships to be awarded in the Spring of 1987. MANY OF THOSE DAYS WILL REQUIRE COMPRO- MISE, AN ADJUSTMENT OF OPPOSING PRINCIPLES. EDUCATION PERMITS COMPROMISE WITHOUT CA- PITULATION, A SURRENDER OF THOSE PRINCIPLES. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION THE WARRENSBURG CENTRAL SCHOOL WARRENSBURG, ATHOL, THURMAN William Lamy Mrs. Amanda Barnes Vice President Clinton Rumrill Congratulations To You, The Class Of 1987! You have earned the right to be pictured here with your classmates. Soon you will be marching together to receive your high school diplomas; that is as it should be. You have worked hard to achieve the status of a high school graduate. You have spent twelve years of your young life working at that pro- cess. Soon, all too soon, your student days at Warrensburg will be little more than a rainbow of memories. This yearbook should serve as a reminder of those memories, of the days you spent learning and sharing with your teachers and friends. When, in the future, you pull this yearbook from a shelf, dust it off and open it. I hope you recall all of us who have worked with you. We have invested much of our time and energies in preparing you for the future. My hope is that when the day comes, when you do open this book, you are enjoying much success, good health and happiness. With warm wishes for you in the future. Sincerely, ucl ----- Philip J. Magnarella Superintendent Of The Warrensburg Central School 39 SENIORS! YOU WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR WHAT YOU DID YESTERDAY CREDITED WITH WHAT YOU DO TODAY AND, MOST IMPORTANT, REWARDED FOR ALL YOUR PLANS IN TOMORROW! BLESSINGS! DANIELT. CONNOR High School Principal Of The Warrensburg Central School TO ALL SE, THE CLASS OF 1987: Hum a little Sing a little Whistle a little WORK your very best SMILE, and be HAPPY!. MY VERY BEST WISHES, Charles A. De Vitto Elementary Principal Of The Warrensburg Central School Mr. Reynolds knew the “tricks of WCS” students to their advisors. Why? His teach- ers who are yet on the teaching staff can vouch that “Mr. R” was the charter member of a “how to do it” ... book now circulating among the students of planet earth for pos- sible competition! This is exactly why we know that we, the Class of '87, are the re- ceivers of an advisor who knows the virtue of “fun” ... even in the depth of heavy labor. Mr. Reynolds joined Mr. Bertrand as our advisor when we became sophomores. There could never be a more super team of advisors for growing high schoolers! Mr. Reynolds is one of life’s “special” people who has cared enough to return to his alma mater to give to others a portion of his con- tinued “spark” for life. We, the Class of 1987, proudly dedicate this HACKENSACK '87 to him. 42 Mr. Bertrand is one of life's “special” peo- ple. His very conversation is electric and makes one wish to, and absorb his perpetual vitality. With but a very few years difference in age between advisor and student, the Class of '87 is the primary benefactor of Mr. Bertrand, our mentor and our friend. Class activities immediately became the fun, even in the labor of having to make money.” We, the Class of '87, proudly dedi- cate this HACKENSACK '87 to you for so many things. We worked, and you taught us how to love it. We played, and your laughter joined ours to make this happiness that much more meaningful. We studied, each in our several ways, and we now know that you share our anticipation of “tomorrow.” DEDICATION 43 New York State Empire Boys State Empire Boys State is an annual event held for a single week. Boys from throughout New York State are select- ed from their home areas to meet at the Le Moyne College Campus in Syra- cuse, New York. Their purpose is to live in and to govern their “modeled state govern- ment” through the democratic princi- ples and procedures they grow to know and to love both as a citizen of Empire Boys State, and even more, as a growing citizen of the United States of America. Alan J. Hall and Jerold 0. Quintal, II, of the Class of 1987 were their class representatives during the Summer of 1986. They were selected by the high school faculty to represent the com- munity of Warrensburg. Both gentle- men were sponsored and underwritten by the American Legion and the Kiwanis of the community. Alan describes his experiences as: “Boys State is a program where we had to develop our own community, state, and national governments. We held elections for positions in all levels of our government. There were two po- litical parties, the nationalists and the federalists. We held debates and elec- tions similar to actual local, state and national elections.” Joq tells of his experience at Boys State: Before going to Empire Boys State, I was somewhat optimistic about it. I had heard that they really ‘push you.’ I was afraid that I might not ‘fit in’ when I felt that I knew so little about the execution of our govern- ment. After a very brief time, however, I discovered that I was not alone with my feelings. The purpose of Empire Boys State was to eliminate our many doubts. We were there to learn, to practice, and to live our democratic process.” The Class of 1987 is proud of War- rensburg’s American Legion and Kiwanis in their foresight, sponsoring two gentlemen from our own ranks as potential Citizens of Tomorrow. 44 Mrs. Joan Ouelette Mrs. Hilda Vroman Mrs. Ann Lloyd Mrs. Valerie Smith Mrs. Jacqueline Strasser Mrs. Elda Monroe Mrs. Diana Young Mrs. Simone Barosay 45 Elementary Teaching Staff Rev. Con- nor STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council The Student Council is an organization which provides student participation in school affairs. The Student Council is not an organization for “self-government” or for “Stu- dent Government.” Rather, students, through their student council, share in the administration and management of school activities. It is a democratic enterprise developed by the mutual coo- peration of all those in the school. The Student Council teaches the principles of democracy by actual participa- tion of students and faculty alike learning to do by doing. The aims and purposes of the Student Council are many and far reaching. The most important of these aims are: 1. To develop leadership, scholarship, and citizenship. 2. To develop in the student a growing appreciation of membership in a democracy. 3. To promote the general welfare of the student body and the school. 4. To coordinate and promote student activity and en- courage greater participation on the part of the stu- dents. 5. To promote harmonious relations between teachers and students and among the students themselves. 6. To stimulate and develop a healthy school spirit, in- volving loyalty to and pride in the school. 7. To promote school-community spirit. The Student Council is composed of its officers and a representative from each grade. The council meets weekly to transact old and new business. The work of the council is reported by the representatives at their homeroom meetings. At these meetings students have an opportunity to make known their desires and to give suggestions to be reported to the council. After suffering through non-league losses early in the season, the Lady Burgers proceeded on to a 14 game winning streak, before losing to Germantown in the Section II Class D Finals. Win number 12 was notched on the North Warren field where the team captured their second consecutive Adirondack League Title. We had a very fulfilling season in many ways. A special thanks to Sharine Sweet who coached a successful JV squad, to our faithful fans, to our Sports Booster Club and to Nikki Kenyon — our only senior. 68 Coach Maryann Bump CONGRATULATIONS VARSITY FOOTBALL 1986-87 CHAMPIONS Varsity Football Mr. Vasak, Toby Bruce, Mark LaFond, Scott Remington, Doug DeGrechie, Bob Frye, Matt Blair, Mike Carpenter, Ed Webster, Tyler Reed, Paul Moulton, D. Our program gained alot of positive experience and knowledge of the game, along with a division and superbowl championship. This overall emotional and psychological maturity will give us a better chance to reach out for future goals and achievements. Coach A. During these twenty-five years, he has taught mathematics in both junior and senior high school. He also advised the National Junior Honor Society during its existence. In October of 1987, Mr. Grace will retire to pursue other areas of challenge, recreation and relaxation. HACKENSACK '87 proudly acknowledges these years and graciously wishes you many years of good health, enduring happiness, and a prosperity beyond this life, Mr. Grace. ERIC BROWN During the Summer of 1986, a young man — indeed, a gentleman — heard the “call for help of a young girl who had fallen from a swimming tube into the current of the Schroon River. He immediately forgot” that he was unable to swim, yet this child needed his help. He truly placed his life in danger for this helpless child. ERIC BROWN’S sudden death brought his active life into an immediate reflection, a reflection of a pure, quiet, simple devotion to his family, his friends, and his teammates. Many quickly remembered Eric’s great pride in sinking two points” for his Junior Varsity Bas- ketball team. These two points were a joy to him and a special joy that brought everyone in the gymnasium to their feet. This was an ovation for you, Eric. Our ovation now is in your final devotion to save and to help others here, as you now attain life everlasting, There. In physical life you wished nothing more than simple happiness. Now, this simple happiness is your inheri- tance to eternal life. HACKENSACK ’87 remembers you proudly, ERIC BROWN! Grant, Bill Conklin Salesmen BUSINESS EDITORS Mrs. Katharine Marquardt Business Advisor Amy Baker Doni Lyn Combs THE HACKENSACK is our single, general, school publication of perma- nent record. During these years of pub- lication growth in quality, there, like- wise, has been a growth in expense. Mrs. Katharine Marquardt has been the Business Advisor during these re- cent years, and she depends upon very dedicated, very special people to seek and to secure advertisements that will aid in publication expenses. Our current publication expense, not including photography and many ad- ded expenses, is approximately $13,500 each year. HACKENSACK 87 is placed in our hands for a price less than one-half the actual cost of print- ing each yearbook. Many students begin as “business editors, but only a very few endure this necessary labor of enlisting adver- tisers, proving to each one that his ad- vertising expenditure will be more than worth the expense. To Mrs. Marquardt, Shelly Morgan, Amy Baker, and Doni Lyn Combs are the bouquets of thanks! They begin this very important task as soon as classes begin in September. Their final advertisements must be submitted by early February. Although they must have completed their greatest labors by February, they return in the Month of May to distribute the finally pub- lished HACKENSACK 87. Expenses for this final publication depend upon you, MRS. MAR- QUARDT, and YOUR GIRLS! My most humble thanks! 97 Shelly Morgan EDITORIAL STAFF THE EDITORIAL STAFF, RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS COMPLETED HACKENSACK ’87 THE EDITORIAL STAFF of each yearbook begins its work the very day that the prior year's book has been finally submitted for pub- lication. It must always see, use, and file repre- sentative photography and copy for succeed- ing HACKENSACK publications. Although each yearbook highlights the current graduat- ing class, the entire annual MUST REPRESENT ALL, IF POSSIBLE, OF THE WARRENSBURG CENTRAL SCHOOL STUDENT BODY, ITS STAFF, AND ITS COMMUNITY. Constant “due dates” begin in early Sep- tember, requiring that the graduating senior class have their formal and informal photogra- phy be completed in the Month of May of the previous year. The beginning thirty-two pages — ONE FOURTH OF THE TOTAL BOOK — must be with the publisher before the third week of September. Many participants who be- gin working on the EDITORIAL STAFF do not continue until publication. HACKENSACK PUBLICATION DEPENDS UPON VERY FEW, TRULY DEDICATED STUDENTS. Each one gives as “little” as three to four nights each week following a day of classes. Work sessions can be as brief as one hour, yet may extend to as many as four hours. Two vacation days are also required! KRIS AUGUSTA directed the typing of all copy for the annual. Kris began in September and continued throughout the year. Her able assistant, CHERRITH TENNANT, surely added to the excellent to our needed copy. Cherrith came as soon as Kris asked for her assistance. DESIREE’ COMBS began her dedicated work in her Junior Year and continued at every op- portunity both in typing copy and in layout. Desiree' has given countless hours of assis- tance. PAULLA CONVERSE also began her dedication to HACKENSACK publication in her Junior Year. She has worked so very hard with days that extended into vacation until her health prevented further work. SARAH HAG- GERTY, with an already tedious study and ex- tracurricular schedule, gave as much as she could until study schedules necessarily inter- fered. Were it not for the Fall Football Team, MATT THOMPSON would have begun in Sep- tember in editorial layout. Matt began in May of the prior year and continued the day that foot- ball season terminated. His assistance in so many areas was invaluable. ANGIE ROULEAU, LORI LEVINE, TRACY BURNHAM, AND ADAM BRUCE gave as much time as their schedules permitted. Kristine Augusta Copy Typist Chairperson Cherith Tennant Copy Typist Desiree ’ Combs Copy Typist Layout Paula Converse Layout 98 Countless hours and days, both in and out of the school day, were given by DAN WEST. Dan was a“natural” in layout. It was “elementary, my dear Watson” to him to mathematically vi- sualize a layout. He was always avail- able to meet and to work whenever the time was available. There were many times when the faculty adviser was physically unable to attend that Dan expertly attended the work at hand. His hours would never receive ade- quate compensation. DAN WEST HAS BEEN NAMED THE EDITOR IN CHIEF OF THE ’87 HACKENSACK. It is, in- deed, a privilege to confer this worthy honor upon him. You ask, “Well, what is there to do- ing a yearbook?” Friends, publication ideas never be- gin nor end. Senior formal and informal sittings must be scheduled during the Month of May so that their selection may comply with SUMMER WORK SCHEDULES. Yes, pages one through thirty-two must be posted to the pub- lisher two weeks following the opening of school. Then, the photographer must be scheduled during three, very busy days of the fourth week of September to photograph Fall activities, the student body, the administration, faculty, teaching and non-teaching staff. Do not forget that during the first week of December, winter sports and activities must be photographed. Spring activi- ties are photographed in March and April for the following year's book. All photography must be examined to be as representative of the school community as possible. Identifications must be determined. All copy has to be composed, examined for accuracy and finally typed for submission to the publisher. Layouts that include photo- graphs and copy must be made attrac- tive. Specific printing procedures must be followed, with particular footnotes for unusual printing instructions. THE HACKENSACK demands countless hours of labor and dedica- tion hidden between the pages of the finished product. Be kind and be gentle as you compliment these FINE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN RESPONSIBLE for YOUR ANNUAL HACKENSACK. Rev. Fr. C. Michael Abraham, Editorial Advisor E D I T 0 R N C H 1 E F DANIEL J.
