One teacher, however, has gone beyond this enthusiasm and devotion. Somehow, six years ago we timidly entered the “Sixth Grade Zoo” — scared to death. “A black phantom” suddenly appeared. Normally, sixth graders would shudder; but we sensed his wish to take us under his wing. We sensed his wanting to mold us into solid, firm, wholesome adults. We left sixth grade, but this “black phantom” never left us. Through our many high school activities he continued both his enthusiasm and devotion for us as a class. More recently, publishing the HACKENSACK ’86 became a problem. He assumed it with us. We the Class of 1986, proudly dedicate Volume 46 of the HACKENSACK ’86 to the Rev. Eather C. Michael Abraham. Thank you so much for your undying love and devotion. i rVA APPRECIATION Graduation culminates the many years of study, the personal dedication, and the labors of many. We, the Class of 1986, gratefully commend out class advisors, Mrs. Ouellette and Mrs. Lawson, for three and one-half years of constant guidance, advice and “tender loving care.” So many times we procrastinated when decisions should have been immediate. We often expected things to happen without our having to exert any effort. Both Mrs. Ouellette and Mrs. Lawson led us to the necessities of decision, the strength to making healthy decisions as students, with the confidence to continue decision making as adults. The Class of 1986 gratefully appreciates Mrs. Ouellette and Mrs. Lawson and wishes to commend this in this HACKENSACK ’86. For three years, we, the Class of 1986, have been most fortunate to have the example and the dedication of Mr. Daniel Connor as our High School Principal. We have always felt that as students we were very much a part of his own life. Senior privileges, our senior room, always being there were indicators of Mr. Connor’s constant presence. We appreciate these and many more continued expressions of his love for each of us. HACKENSACK ’86 proudly commends you, our principal, Daniel Connor. 37 Mr. Frederick Seri ver President Mr. Michael Hill Vice President B O A R D Mr. George Lane Mr. Arthur Brown O F Mr. Benjamin Guiles Mrs. Amanda Barnes E D U C A T I O N Mr. John Arehart Mr. Gary Martin Mrs. Mary Ellen Reed 39 JUh JUNIORS, ROW 1: Chris Sprague, Dan West, Van Baker, At Martin; ROW 2: Rachel Adams, Donna Griswold, Beth Dorrance, Kim Redfield; ROW 3: Stephanie Kruger, Amy Meurman, Amy Perry, Jon Baker, Lori Lavine JUNIORS, ROW 1: Chris DeFranco, Desiree’ Combs, Matt Thompson, Scott Russell; ROW 2: Michele Keller, Nikki Kenyon, Sue Baker, Lesley Lloyd; ROW 3: Sally Haggerty, Paula Converse, Ed Webster, Al Hall, Charles Wallace, Terry Vernum CKS JUNIORS, ROW 1: Dan DeSantis, Adam Bruce, Dane Smith, Tim Burnham; Row 2: Tami Persons, Tracey Burnham, Wendi Persons, Julie Burnett; ROW 3: Cherith Tenant, Angie Rouleau, Joq Quintet, Lisa Lomax JUNIORS, ROW 1: Advisors: Mr. Bertrand and Mr. Renyolds; ROW 2: Rachel Adams, Chris DeFranco, Lesley Lloyd; ROW 3: Nikki Kenyon, Tammi Persons, Tracey Burnham. UNIQUE PLACEMENT AND CAREER INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS The Unique Placement and the Career Internship Programs are programs offered to juniors and seniors in high school by the Southern Adirondack Educational Center. Both programs are designed for students who plan to attend college after high school. The purpose of these programs is for students to experience what it would be like to work in the field they wish to pursue after college. The Career Internship Program is a short-term career exploration opportunity, utilizing a student-mentor relationship. The Unique Placement Program is an internship, emphasizing individualized learning. The students work ten hours a week with a mentor and receive on-the-job experience. •• • • •r «BER I, Debbie Byrne, am a particicpant in the Career Internship Program. Every Wednes- day morning, I work at the LaCrosse Street Pre-School in Hudson Falls. My mentor, Mrs. Sandy Cubbins, is teaching me the different methods to teach children. I am helping the children with distinguishing shapes, colors, and numbers. I enjoy this opportunity to work with the children and feel I’m learning while they are. I, Frank Coulman, am working at Glens Falls Hospital, North Creek Nursing Home, and with Bassin and Baitz, P.T. I am under the guidance of Mr. Steven Bassin, a physical therapist in Glens Falls. I observe the P.T.'s when they are treating patients. I look up different medical data and try to diagnose the problem. I also help ambulate the elderly at the Tri-County Adirondack Nursing Home. In all, this has been a great experience, and has helped in my college entrance preparation. I, Kathy Tucker, work at Northway Floors and Interiors, Incorporated. I work daily in the accounting office directly with the vital records of the business and with the mentor- ship of Mrs. Ann Ambrosino. This true-to-life experience has encouraged my direction for further formal training and eventual choice in my vocation as an eventual Certified Public Accountant. 75 76 We, Kelley Baker and Sue Connor, are placed in the Physical Therapy Department at the Glens Falls Hospital, and Occupa- tional Therapy, also located there. We take part in the rehabilita- tion of patients with physical handicaps. Every Saturday morn- ing from nine until noon, we observe the physical therapists and get some “hands-on” experience. We enjoy our work there. We help the elderly and amputation patients, who come as sched- uled daily according to their own therapy schedules. Do any of you know what button I should push? BOYS STATE I was very proud to be chosen as a representative of my school and my hometown to Boys’ State. It was held at Siena College from June 23 to June 29, 1985. Boys' State is an objective citzenship training program which incul- cates individual responsibility to the community, state, and nation. It is operated on the basis of the political government organization exist- ing in New York State, including all levels from the municipality to the State. I would like to express my appreciation to you, members, of the American Legion and Kiwanis for supporting my week at Boys’ state. Bob Olden During the final week of June 1985, I participated in the American Legion Boys’ State program held at Siena College in Loudonville. The Boys’ State program was developed from a basic idea of teaching us how our government is run and the discipline that is needed to make it function correctly. They broke all participants into political parties and we held caucuses, primaries, debates, and elec- tions and had a political race very similiar to a real election race. Volunteer Marines were there to keep us disciplined and in order. This made things flow smoothly. I met many nice people there; and, now that it’s over, I realized that I learned a few things and had quite a good time. I would like to thank the American Legion for sponsoring my trip, the Marines for their help and the staff at Siena College for all their help and for providing a beautiful campus for us to use. Tom Perkins 83 Kelly on the piano in a rock band In 1984 the Rotary Club of Lake George sponsored a youth exchange trip available to any high school student in tenth, eleventh, or twelth grade. An interview was held to narrow the participants to two; a final interview by the Albany Rotary made the final decision. Traveling to a foreign country to study and learn to adapt to a new and different way of living is a great opportunity and a rewarding experience. The chance to get out into the world, meet people, and live with different families makes one learn responsibility and a sense of independence that helps with ma- turing. While in England, I stayed with three families, each one differ- ent in their own way. Part of the richness of my experience was learning about the differences within each family, their differing expectations, inter-relationships, and mode of living. Two of my families had a daughter or son my age. This was helpful when it came to meeting other teens and getting involved in school activities. The standard of education in England is much higher at a high school level than that of the United States. The schools have a more disciplined atmosphere that includes a formal dress code, a special emphasis upon private study and reseach time, and an advanced program of subjects taught over a period of two years. My host Rotary Club in England consisted of fifty members. Throughout the year each member and his family had me as a guest for the weekend. They showed me different parts of the country. Some of my travels included visits to big cities like London, Bath, Windsor, Brighton, Bournemouth, and Stratford. Other families emphasized rides along the countryside with visits to small English villages and old churches. One highlight of my trip was visiting the surrounding Rotary Clubs. I thoroughly enjoyed telling people about American lifes- tyles, schools, my own town and family. I would encourage any student interested in learning about people and the customs of another country to pursue a Foreign Exchange Program. In Memoriam Patricia Potter Morgan “In these times of attacks on education and criticism of teachers, picture a dedi- cated elementary teacher — bright, warm, sensitive, creative — sitting on her desk, balancing her high-heeled shoe on her toe and reading E. B. White’s “Charlotte’s Web” to a reary-eyed group of fourth grad- ers ........ Now, picture these same children growing and grown, moving on to other chapters in their own lives; but never losing that special sparkle lovingly applied by that teacher. Again we have tears in our eyes, but not for Charlotte. Now, they are shed for that extraordinary woman, PATRICIA POTTER MORGAN, our loss.” by Maureen Cronin Rossley Mrs. Morgan graduated from the Warrens- burg High School. Following her further edu- cation at Smith College and the University of the State of New York, Mrs. Morgan taught for ten years in the Warrensburg Central Ele- mentary School during the span of years from 1966 through 1980. HACKENSACK '86 wishes to memorialize PATRICIA POT- TER MORGAN! Retirement Means “Retreaded .... ment” Robert Frank Mary Frank Alice Ellis Robert Frank began his teaching career as a teacher of music in the Warrensburg Central Elementary School. Mr. Frank began teaching here in February of 1956 and has touched almost every student in the school for these past thirty years. THE HACKEN- SACK ’86 commends him for his years in the gift of music not only within the school, but even further within the community. May you have many healthy, happy and prosperous years of retreaded .... ment”! Mary Frank began her teaching career as the teacher of art in the Warrensburg Central High School. She began teaching in Sep- tember of 1958. Art presentations and years of school “Open Houses” have shown the community the artistic abilities of their chil- dren. Mrs. Frank’s own artistic gifts have coupled with her ability to tape the natural gifts of her students. As January of 1987 approaches, may you know many healthy, happy and prosperous years of a retirement in a “husband-wife” team that Warrensburg Central will deeply miss. HACKENSACK ’86 salutes you! Alice Ellis began teaching in the Warrens- burg Central Elementary School as a substi- tute teacher until she became hired in Au- gust of 1981. Mrs. Ellis has in a few, brief years touched the lives of many elementary children. She is noted for her patience and her understanding. HACKENSACK '86 com- mends you and wishes you many healthy, happy and prosperous years of retirement. 105 Heidi Zuschlog ‘‘You’re a very special daughter, sister, and friend. Diana Byrne To me the most appropriate word for the game of field hockey is “AWESOME”. I have been a member of the Warrensburg Field Hockey team for the past four years, three of which being Varsity. In 1982-1983 I was on the Championship Adirondack League Field Hockey Team coached by Anne Downes; and this year again I'm on a championship team, but we have a new coach, MaryAnn Bump. Throughout my field hockey career I have really learned a great deal, not just about the game but also about sportsmanship and friendship. In order to have a winning team you need a dedicated coach and dedicated teammates. There were times when we be- came frustrated because we had to practice so much, for example our running. We did alot of running and complaining but deep down inside we knew it had to be done. In the long run, it payed off. We became the Adirondack League Champions for the year 1985-1986. Being selected to the All-star Team was a great honor, not only for myself but also for representing my school. I’m really going to miss field hockey next year. I won’t be here but my heart will; and I wish next year's team all the luck in the world. Bonni Trapasso 1 Baby 1 Uaughter Laureen For all the times you worked, studied, and played sports- your father and I want to say- We thank you- We are proud of you- We Con- gratulate You!” Love, Mom and Dad 1 Goalie T When your Dad and I had you in hand Our hopes and dreams came true And happiness began When we were blessed with you. The years passed by so quickly, You're baby days were o’er Through every stage, Through every age We loved you even more.
