Oct 5 I949 VV H S Spun Page 3 CARDINALS FALL PREY TO RAMPAGING TIGERS The WHS Tigers took their sec ond conference wm in as manv starts September 23 at Clmton when they downed the Clmton Cardinals 25 13 It was the Tlgers game all the way They led 12 0 at halftlm and 25 0 at the end of the thlrd quarter when the Tiger reserves went into action The first Warrensburg touch down was set up early in the lnl tial period when Ralph Ross inter cepted a Clmton aerial and was downed on the Cardmal 34 yard l1ne After a drive to the 4 a lo yaid penalty set the Bengals back to the 19 where John Wextzel mov ed the ball to the 5 on an end run and Ron Heatherly went through the middle for the counter Jim Collins kick for the conversion was no good The scorlng durlng the first half ended when Warrensburg took a Cardinal punt on the Clmton 35 gamed 8 and Joe DeBacker skirt ed the left end to pay dlrt Collms conversion attempt was agam no good In the third period the Bengals offense agam clicked to produce the final Warrensburg scoring The Tigers returned the kickoff to the Clmton 38 where after a 15 yard run by Heatherly was nulll fied by a penalty for the same dis tance Heatherly agam got away thls time for 35 yards movmg the ball to the 3 where Weltzel went through the mxddle to score A pass from DeBacker to Lee Ad ams fo: the conversion was mcom plete The Txgcrs k cked off and after one play recovered a Cardmal fumble on the 11 yard strlpe Col l1ns went for 9 and DeBacker drove for 116 Heatherly plunged over and k1cked successfully for the extra point The Clmton tall es came agalnst the Tiger subs in the last quarter when McFarland went over from the 12 and Radford plunged from the 3 Snyder was stopped on a l1ne plung after the first touch down but Bath reached the goal lne to com ert for the extra point Attend the home games Sup port the Tigers' A ZTI .. TIGERS GAIN EASY VICTORY IN OPENER In their first staxt of the 1949 season September 16 the WHS Tigers romped to a 45 0 vlctory over Appleton Clty at the CMSC stadium The Bengals got off to an early start and the WHS re serves saw action ln almost half of the game After kicking off the Tlgers foxceo Appleton C1ty to punt and Ron Heatherly returned lt 05 yards to the 5 yard lme where Joe DeBacker went over for the first of.h1s four touchdowns Jlm Col l1ns converted wlth a place pick The next Tiger tally came in the same manner after Appleton C t punted out of bounds on thelr own 95 and DeBacker went off tackle for the counter After Collins suc cessful conversion was nullified by a penalty DeBackers drop klck for the extra point was wlde The Tlgers recovered a fumble on the V1S1t01 s 5 yard l1ne to set up the next tally Collms h1t the l1ne for 2 yards and Heatherly went across on an off tackle slant Collms k1cked the extra po1nt In the thlrd quarter the Tlgers tallled on a 15 yard end run by Heatherly after Jack Wllklnson had moved the ball into scoring terrltory on a 17 yard end around Heatherly s kick for the CO!lV9l'S10ll was no good DeBacker rang up the final tally in the foulth quarter wlth a 21 yard run around left end Collins attempted kvck for conversxon h1t the crossbar and bounced away Coach Copple to his man sald Go after Number 9 Ed' Ed soon came back lThe score was slack? And oh' the words the coach said Helen Holder TIGERS TAKE OVER CONFERENCE LEAD The WHS Tigers moved into first place in the West Central Confer ence by defeating the Butler Bears 26 7 September 30 at the CMSC Stadium m the Bengals thlrd con ference vxctory in as many starts The Tigers Jumped into the lead on the openmg kickoff when John Weltzel took a hand off from Ron Heatherly and skirted the r1ght s1de of the field for 95 yards to ring up the first Bengal tally Jlm Collms mlssed the klCk for the ex tra point After taking the Warrensburg kickoff and drwmg on a succes sion of first downs to the Txger 5 yard stripe Butler was held and forced tg yleld possess1on of the ball to Warrensburg on downs On Warrensburg s first runnlng play of the game Collins galloped the length of the field leaving But ler tacklers behlnd to add the sec ond touchdovsm Heatherlys suc cessful conversion was recalled on to run the extra pomt was stopped short of the goal line As the second quarter began the Bengals held Butler and block ed a Bear punt to take over the ball on the Butler 36 After a first down had moved the pigskm to the 25 Heatherly went around left end for the counter Collins k1cked the extra point Butler returned the klckoff to their own 35 and drove to the War rensburg 15 where Fxazier went off tackle to score Butlers only touchdown Frazler also k1Ck9d the extra point The first half ended another pos Slble Tiger touchdown as time ran out w1th the Bengals on the Butler 2 yard llne The halftlme score was 19 7 In the third perlod Butler threat ened by dr1v1ng deep 1nto War rensburg territory but the Ben gals stlffened to the attack and took over the ball on downs on their own 7 yard marker Later in the same quarter War rensburg ran a punt back to the Butler 39 trled two passes and then Heatherly ran around right end for the touchdown and kicked the extra po1nt to end the scoring F ight, Tlgers' . , . . .
