Thus did I plead, and not in vain, For then, it seemed, the Muse did deign To bend her ear with grace sublime And hearken to this suit of mine. Sing, said the Muse, thy'school's fair praise-, Unto the stars her glory raiseg l Be th'ine the task but to proclaim How she has sought in Learning's name To guide thee on the way of life To arm thee we-11 for every strife. So, dear old high school, 'tis of thee Fhy care and love, my song shall be. Thy sheltering arms through these four years Have held us close in hopes and fears, As thou hast taught with precepts wise, 4 Life's highest values e'er to prize. To seek out truth, and kindly love, Nor yet from honor's path to rove. If joy and victory are Won, Or if defeat and sorrow come, To keep the faith, that in the end All threads in one true pattern blend. , All this and more now year by year, Hast thou taught us, thy children dear, T To mold our body, soul, and mind, To love our God and serve mankind. And now we offer, e'er we part, The tribute of a grateful heartg May this our votive offering be To grace the shrine of memory. 1 me 19 3 - Page Twenty-three :gl A R R CDVV .::- SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Among the first days of September, 1926, forty-eight little seven-th graders rr-arched boldly to the institution which for six years has exacted from them their lives at the penalty of eighth hours. May, '27, saw them graduated as eighth graders, and that fall they enlisted as verdant Frezhmen, choosing as their guides Dorothy Todd, Genevieve Wood, Mar- garet Jones, and Jimmy Smith, Characteristic of Freshmen, they with blissful importance ruled the halls, and having finished their prescribed Algebra, English, and et cetera, were found safe in the Sophomore Class in the fall of '29, As gay young Sophomores they were desirous of a good time and by the efforts of their leaders, Bill Bob Foster, Banner Rice, Murray Williams, and Rube Oglesby. they enjoyed a fine picnic at the close of school, rejoicing that they had gone out from old Caesar's Gallic Wars, and would soon be safe in the Junior Class. These jolly Juniors were an energetic bunch. They realized their obligations to their elder senior brothers, and worked toward a banquet the entire year. Theilr play was a success, and, co-operating with their oflicers, Robert Mayes, Rube Oglesby, Genevieve- Wood, Dorothy Jones, and Banner Rice, they sponsored a ban- quet that will not be forgotten soon. They were indeed grand old Seniors. Their officers were John Stephens Holly- man, Mary.Carolin Krohn, Rozelle Higgins, and Jack Brown. They worked untir- ingly on the Arrow, presented a fine Senior pfay and went out from their Alma Mater in the spring of '31, deposited safe in the wide, wide world. lk-ge Twenty-four ' 19 aw , - J - 2 :ig R -I2 SENIOR PROPHECY On the evening of March 4, 1951, I was sitting in the presence of Prince Pat, the psychic wonder. He had been acclaimed the most outstanding, phenomenal psychic by the mental and psychical research societies of America and Europe! I-le could call names, give- business advice, and domestic and romantic enlightenment.. I had gone to see this gifted individual with hopes that he could tell nip what had happened to the 1931 class of Warrensburg High School. And so, here l was sitting in front of none other than the great Prince Pat in person. After paying the small price of Hfty dollars, he suddenly went into a trance. The lights grew low and there appeared before him a 'sparkling Crystal. Most wonderful Prince Pat, I said, please tell me of my friends who were Seniors in Warrensburg High School in 1931. Suddenly there appeared in the Crystal the figure of Robert Mayes in an art- ist's smock. Robert, he said, is working on his masterpiece, one of the greatest paintings of all times. He is painting the picture of the famous actress, Dorothy Eckhoff. By the way, Dorothy has just gotten a divorce from her fifth husband, WVilmer Ross. She had decided to marry Bill Stockton a second time. The scene changed and I saw Ailene Fitch leading a group of Communistic re- volters. In the crowd I recognized the faces of May Azalea Logan, Louise Estes, Helen Hughes, Thelma Stark, Ruby Michael, and Helen Cunningham, who are now famous club women of America. Carl Davis, he said, is now the national president of the Fire Prevention Association. In co-operation with him, Lucille Ele offers her practical advice. Prof. Foster is now in a laboratory working on a chemical fire extinguisher. He married Dixie Griffith and is 'living happily ever after'. Whatever happened to one of our most famous classmates, Banner Rice, I asked. Oh, Prince Pat replied, 'the' is a master of ceremonies in the same cabaret in which Dorothy Todd dances. Harold Miller leads the orche, tra. I was growing quite shocked when I found out that he knew so much about our class. As the last scene faded, there' appeared the image of Junior May. Junior, he said, is the president of the Broken-Arch Shoe Company. He has as his stenog- rapher, Hazel Ball, and Rozelle Higgins a.s his secretary. He does business with such great men as Ragner Boyd'of the Skyscraper Construction Company and Jack Brown of the Black and Blue Taxicab Company. They are co-operating in an ei- fort to elect Murray Williams as Mayor of Chicago. In the Little Church Around the Corner could be seen Asa Burlingame be- hind a huge pulpit and leading the choir was our famed singer Lewis McNutt, aid- ed by Bernice Paddock. Carol Foster was playing the organ while far to the front in the amen corner sat our famous Francis Loman, with Mildred Kintz. Most Marvelous Prince' Pat, I said, what happened to James Mayes? As quick as the words were uttered there appeared his image clothed in the spotless robes of a surgeon. By his side were three nurses, Lila Belle Herndon, Margaret Alsbury, and Glenn Sims. Harry Priest, who is now a missionary, Lucille Prussing, Genevieve Wood, Katherine Wilborn, Velma Temple, and Anna Mae' Dulhani, he said, are in China as mission workers. Their expenses are being paid by the noted philanthropist, Everett Wade. Everett made his money by fur trapping in Alaska, He Sells them to a mail order house owned by Clarence Lockardf' VVo,n't you tell me about the rest of the students? I said. He replied that he needed another twenty dollar bill, which I promptly paid. Dorothy Jones and Ada Berneice Brown, he said Hare boop-boop a-doop blues singers over the radio. Ada Keith gives her daily cooking recipes over sta.- tion KUKU in Red Falls, Iowa. Vera Frances Hagemeyer ,gives the beauty talks while Mary Frances Mattingly tells the bedtime stories. But you haven't told me about Rube Ogle'by, I said. Oh, yes, he replied, Rube became a famous lawyer. He defended Mary Carolin Krohn in her attack on the theory of evolution as advanced by Rodney Fitch, who has been called the second Einstein. Mardelle Estes is writing his biography which will soon be- published. By this time, the lights gradually grew brighter. The great Prince Pat had vanished. -JOHN STEPHENS HOLLYMAN. -. .-v -..- H 1 Q 3 1 Page 'l'wcnty-five ff , :::4 IX R R .::: K I I ' x X JWW Q I CI r, Af, ,f VL W S XV MAXAIQJ MW Mft I 4 y 'A 10 S 1 - s' ,I 7 t t jxyjf, OFFICERS u 4, x A , .lk - ,ff 'A I ,f Eksthe X ennfeufif ..... , ,............................... ,............ But it's fashionable to slenderize and the Juniors are always fashionable. How many of our fond teachers will leap into matrimony this year-three re- sponded to our treatment in two years' timeg surely three years with us will re- duce many more to such a state of desperation that they will be willing to risk anything. lf VVilliam cannot now. that he has gone in for debate, tell us how to argue effectively against the opinions ofour teachers and parents, which, we're sure, are far inferior to our own. We shall ask him, anyway. How in heavein's name can we get mo11ey enough to buy food for the Junior- Senior banquet. We have a feeling that the Seniors have empty stomachs to, match their heads. Whether the receipt for dignity, comes along with onefs promotion to the rank of Senior. We hope so, but our observation of Seniors makes us doubt. If it is a fad to have parsons' oiflspring to head class organizationsg the1'e's John Hollyman and Esther Kennaugh this yearg not bad, considering the reputa- tion that usually attends preachers' children! Whether we will have a small-pox epidemic or something next yearg-vaccina- tions are as good as operations as a topic of conversation, not to mention the fun of pulling up a sleeve or down a sock to show that it's taken . How our nightly visitors enjoyed their refreshments from the cooking de- partment. Some Junior girls from that department think the-ir cooking had bad effects on our friends. At least, they haven't been back for some time. Doesn't sound encouraging, does it, boys? If some of our classmates will survive' this seige of foreign languages, From comments that have been overheard it seems that the entire French populace is in danger of annihilation. Of course. we f'f'n't wish them :mv had luck, but-. And as for Cicero, well, it's probably a good 'thing that he is already de-ad. How Mary Helen will escape feeling important with the honor of being the class choice for basketball queen thrust upon herg and now, since she was elected queen for the high school, it's a wonder she ever sees her lowly friends. If Georgia has just been kidding us into believing she is going to be a great player of c'assical music. Naturally. we don't want to accuse her of anything--but vou should hear her play St, Louis Blues. VVhetl'e the hug of getting married has bitten the pupils this year instead of the teachers. Not only did one of the Seniors take the le'-vi but even one of our Juniors. After putting it over. on us, about all we can do is to offer congratulations. So here's to your happiness, Ruby! How Eugene likes the role of an opera star, We knew' he could play basket- ball like a veteran-and if you don't believe he can act-you should have seen the Operetta. Now don't ask how we paid for the said costumes, that's another story, one best kept out of print. Believing sincerely in the Qld adage' that the female of the species is the most deadly, we set out to strike terror to the hearts of opposing teams with yells and stunts and drills. Did it work? Think-have not our own boys won the victory more often than not? And as for comfort in the hour of defeat, well, comfort is our middle name. A mere tame, puny thing. with no fighting power. As with a tiger, so with The Tigers , without the Tigers Roar , they would be powerless. We may have not indulged in many artistic drills, but we are at least unique -if you know what that word really means, and the One that we did put on was a whopper-the' famous drill at Dockery Gym. Some funny minded wit may exclaim that the old tiger must be in a decline, so feeble is its roar at times. Perhaps we haven't been up to standard so far as volume is concerned, you see the old voice is in a state of metamorphosis a11d so rather uncertain these days, but some roar is better than non roar, isn't it: Let no one, then, have the temerity to disparage the 'Tigers' Roar of 1930-'31. The Juniors won the tournament, defeating their opponents by a large score. This was due la1'gely to the playing of Golay, Bozarth and Mathews. These boys proved to be too much for their opponents, both on defense and offense. The last game of the tournament, between the Juniors and the Faculty, proved disastrous for the Juniors. They played their same steady game, but were unable to control the tip off as in previous games or get through the faculty defense for short shots. Age and years of experience were too muchpfor them. Interest in inter-class games has been growing each year, and we hope to have even a better tournament next year. Princess Diane, the King's grand-daughter, who, had been sum- moned to his death bed, arrives from Nice where she has been for ten years. In the garden, Papa Jule's daughter, Zeta, awaits the coming of Princess Diane through an old tunnel which they had discovered when children. In Ft there was a room filled with treasures, proving that their grandfathers had been pirates. Zeta and the Princess never told of their find for fear of ghosts. Captain Roger Lee arrives to do stunt flying and Princess Diane recognizes him the man she was attracted to in Nice, but because of his remarks against royalty, she begs Zeta not to tell l1im she is a princess. Two pretenders to the throne who arrive to steal the crown jewels, are caught, but the jewels with which the people expected to carry on the revolution are gone. One of her picturesque lie-s, namely, that she and her husband are sim- ply wallowing in luxury, even. to then point of keep-ing a butler, reaches the ears of her well-to-do aunt, who pays her an unexpected visit. The fourflusher puts up at gallant fight to S-ave her face, borrowing enough household furnishings to hide from aunty the most obvious signs of poverty, and pressing hen' long suffering husbandiinto s.ervice as the butler. Now aunty has never met hubbyg so, when it becomes necessaryto trot out some kind of a husband for inspection, Mary digs up a quick-witted stranger, who oblig- ingly passes himself off as her husband. The step-husband, though a good four- llusher, is no match for Mary and soon has thelm both in hot water.
