Warren Wilson College 1985-86 The Ole Lady 7 ye JER FJ Le Y ae A week before the beginning of the new school year the freshmen arrive to go through the process of orientation. It’s a very busy week, leaving little time for homesickness, but it provides ample time to make new friends, and get over the strangeness of a new place. The freshman talent show, performed at the end of this week, is one of the highlights of orientation. Inhibitions are thrown out the door and everyone participates. Each peer group presents a skit which is usually highly entertaining and unique. ' ANUERio meee tcettemamcint ia. Warren Wilson attracts students from everywhere. Over 30 states are represented, and nearly 20% of our student body come from foreign countries. This diversity of student back- ground makes this community one of the most unique small colleges anywhere. A etd a4) sg ee a om enn When we were first formed there were only two teachers, and no buildings. The first students worked hard and turned the Swannanoa Valley site into a beautiful campus and bountiful farm. Today students no longer have to build their own shelter, but they do provide most of the labor needed to keep the college operating. The work program allows students to develop themselves in preparation for the outside world more fully than by just merely “hitting the books”. Warren Wilson has a stu- dent teacher ratio of ten to one. This allows students to get to know their teachers on a first name basis, an attrac- tion very few colleges are able to offer. ‘ ES Whether planting corn and feeding cattle, teaching small children, or preparing lunch for the campus, no other college provides so much diversity for its students. No PR As individuals we each contribute a part of ourselves to the Warren Wilson community. In return we hope to gain not just any education, but a personalized education to suit our individual needs. It’s been a while since we've dedicated a yearbook to someone, but this year is a special year being Dr. Holdens last .. . so we’d like to dedicate this yearbook to him in gratefull recognition for all that he has done and meant to Warren Wilson. Thank-You Very Much Dr. Holden. Staff Faculty Administration pvsyst Contributing to the community atmosphere is the close administration, staff, and faculty interaction with the students. This makes classes and work a much more valuable experience. Relationships are an integral part of this process because my self is influenced not by random factors, but by my relationships with other human beings and the ideas and experiences I gain from these interactions. The entire process of growth requires thought; the degree to which we choose to engage in incisive analysis of our selves and of our relationships represents the limits we impose on our lives: Always think and live a full life.” JK Daprano “My Warren Wilson experience has provided me with a broad base of knowledge and has allowed me to expand in many different areas of interest.” Heather Shannon “It is important to either write things worth reading or to do things worth writing about, but most important of all is to teach what you wish to learn most.” Juan Carlos Ortiz 58 } “Don’t ask why, why, why ... It just is!’ Frances O’Brien : (Van Morreson) “T think we’re called on to be deliberate in everything we do, whether our work in building cabinets or teaching literature or giving shelter to the homeless. By deliberate, I mean the busi- ness of trying to understand the implications of every act we commit, while trying to make more sins of commission than sin of ommission.” (Trying not to take himself too seriously) Jonathan Bliss : | | j Seats Wa eee RE Pictured on this page a biology field trip (below) and scenes from the archeological dig this summer.
