We have come here from many backgrounds, and we have come from different countries. Some say we are a community, others disagree. Most of us believe that the college, and we, are in a state of change. We all hope the changes that occur will be positive. We all grow, to some degree, while here. If we stay here only a week we see Gladfelter and probably the dorms. If we stay longer we see Jensen, Morse, maybe the Church. By the end of four years we have hopefully gained some knowledge about how this school operates, perpetuates itself. Some of us are, at times, disillusioned. But we have remained here out of choice. We would each like to leave our personal mark upon the college. It is hard to accept that people will forget us. We do not know or remember those students who were here forty years ago. We will remember our time here. We will create our own myths about who we were here, and what our impact, if any, was upon the college. We will remember certain faces, if not all of the names. This is our book, it tells our story of 1980. 1, N MX' 19,9 5 4.0 ' 1, sz . 4'i?1-WZ V ' '+P 4 N ADMINISTRATIO Mr. Ohler, Chaplin Dr. Holdon, College President Mr. Lee, Chief Financial Officer .ty ,i,, hnm-H Dean Rix, Dean of Student Affairs f' QA 1 sul' QV A wi vii . hs up ' -5 Sly Dean Franklin, Dean of Work Dean Scoville, Dean of the College Mr. Clark, Assistant to the President Mr. Russell, Director of Development V , , 'Z s ' K I- Yer '.,i.', w' 117 .lj nf 7.5 I 'Q , .Ax ' 7 4 x ' 1,7 ng f A mf ,f' a 4, ff -4' f-ww ', 5 ' J' 4' ' 4 uv. - , . - I I. Common conversa- tions throughout each day do not center around student govern- ment, committee decisions, or administrative policy. Neverthe- less, students, faculty, and the administration are interested in the current affairs on campus, and in changing faulty systems operat- ing at the college. There are 27 committees of varying sizes, responsibilities, and functions on campus. The pictures on these two pages are of Work Council, the Assembly, and the Town Meeting called by the Student Caucus in the fall of 1979. is Q H V ,,.?, ,,, :P ' if ' ' ' IQ M L, I-aught! Their dance takes place in the Visual Arts Center. Art students are stretching and leaping as well, with partners ranging from paintbrushes, pencils, and pastels, to melt- ed recycled metals, cloth constructed peo- ple, silkscreens, and clay. Classes taking place in the art department are rigorous and everyone seems to like it that way. We welcome the addition of these two people and the arrival of a strong arts program. Strength and dedication deserve to exer- cise themselves at W.W.C. in the visual arts. 4 'wr'-'K Kim Stewart 4 if P is ri ia .. 'Ti if fs fl F! i F i f Ea if Ee Y ss - f K . I have also learned to work with various materials. Dusty and Janie do not spoon feed their students. They give what they know and have experiencedg I take what I can from their giving. There is a lot of enthusiasm and positive energy always flowing through the Visual -Arts Building. New ideas and new solutions to problems in the arts crop up every day. Dusty and Janie also show an interest in what students have to say about the arts. I have found the Visual Arts Center a pleasant learning place in which to spend my time. I also work in the Craftshop, a job that gives me the opportunity to progress as a potter. It's like killing two birds with one stone. I am given the chance to increase my skills as a potter as well as show others my skills. It is a learning and teaching experience. The Craftshop has great possibilities. Student participation is small, but those who do use the shop are dedicated. Students who come down here to try various crafts return if they enjoy what they are doing. The Craftshop is a community operation. It needs people to keep it running. I hope enthusiasm in the Craftshop continues to grow. Polly Sherrill . - g ..-...-...m..a...--fi-kw,s1 Q-...K . The active participation in any art heightens one's understanding and appreciation of that art. My primary interest in taking dance, oth- er than being able to work with Jim before he graduates, was to set aside part of the week for an outlet from studying. The resulting insight into the creative possibilities of the body, and the discipline of those who dance as a profession, is something I'm sure every- one in the class has felt. We are all responsible for taking part in a performance at the end of the semester. J im's experience in professional dance, his opti- mism, and the energy he devotes, keep us moving. The loss of Jim Herlinger last year, and Hank Steinbrecher the year before, meant this year's coach Tom Fisher was faced with a sizable responsibility. The end of the 1978 season saw the graduation of eight starting soccer players which made 1979 a year of building in more than one respect. Several freshmen had to take up the slack and I feel they did a tremendous job. Steve Bradley, Ronnie Normand, Steve Sabia, and Tim Deuitch will be seasoned veterans by their sophomore year, a plus to next yearis team. As a four year veteran of Warren Wilson soccer, who has played under three coaches, I would have to say that this year was the most disappointing. But it was not a total loss. The twelve or thirteen players who finished the season certainly learned a lot and I enjoyed having each one as teammates. One of my most memorable moments will always be seeing Dianna Bear Young running onto the field to play mens intercollegiate soccer. To my knowledge she is the only woman to play for a mens team. What Dianna lacked in physical size and experience she certainly made up for with a genuine desire and determination to play. I wish all the luck in the world to next year's team and I hope Warren Wilson will continue playing soccer with spirit, because playing soccer is fun. Newcomers Danna Scott, Mark Burkey, David Mu- chane, and Bob Wilson added strength to the team and fell right into the spirit of the B.B.R.M. fBig Blue Running Machinej. This year the women faced some tough competition from Clemson U. in South Carolina, Radford and Liberty Baptist Colleges in Virginia, and the Asheville Track Club. CRecord: 0 Wins, 5 lossesj. The Women's Softball Team was comprised of four returning studentsg the rest of the players were new. Few members had played softball before they joined the team. High spirits outweighed disappointments and everyone encouraged each other. The women pulled together over the course of the season and played as a team. ' , no W. Theresa Garrison and Joe Elliott. sun IEVII ls the election of a Homecoming Queen a popularity contest, or does it have real significance? Homecoming Queen is the result of a popularity contest. The election takes place early in the year when it is impossible to know about a person other than their name. After my brother, Kevin Moorhead, was crowned Queen in 1978, Warren Wilson started choosing one male and one female representative each year. The idea of representatives for Warren Wilson College means more than electing a Homecoming Queen. I feel if one is chosen as a representative of W.W.C., it should be for academic or athletic achievement as well as social standing. Representing Warren Wilson is an honor and should be taken seriously.
