They reached the peak of their games at llomecoming against Lake Forest when they upset them by a 12 to 6 score. The line. one of the heaviest that XYarren has ever had. was made up of Ames and ti. l'hilip at ends, Strahan and XVells at tackles, Mauser and llogan at guards. lie-Young at center, and lleck, l7eZurik, llrya, Rosene, and llill l'hilip in the baekfield. llard luck trailed the team all season and there wasn't a game that XVarren did not have some regulars out with injuries. The hardest blow was a knee injury to llrya that put him out for all of the season. XYally Ames also missed a couple of games due to a leg injury. Roland l7eZurik shifted into the backfield when llrya was injured and did a good job of filling in the vacant fullback post. lle proved to be a good ground gainer and was one of the best defensive players on the team. Credit is also due to .Xl Heck who shifted from the line to the backfield for the good of the team. September 20-Palatine 0, Warren 3. Warren won the opening game in a close. hard fought contest. Brya kicked a Field goal for XVarren's only score. l'alatine was unable to pierce the massive Warren line for anything that resembled consistent gaining, Init in the last period the l'irates took to the air to march 70 yards down the field for a last minute scoring threat. A series of passes and a penalty for a Warren man's interfernig with the pass receiver brought the ball to the NVarren 10-yard line with less than a minute to play. However. Heck, Blue llevil half-back, stopped the advance by intercepting the pass as the final whistle blew. September 27-Barrington 18, Warren 0. XVarren suffered its first defeat against liaiuington by an I8 to 0 score. The fast Harrington backs took to the air too much for the XYarren boys. although Delurik, who shifted from the line to full-back due to llrya's injury. played a great defensive game. XVarren's only threat for a score came when a pass was completed to Cliff l'hilip who was stopped on the 10-yard line, but the llarrinffton line held XYarren for downs and then punted out of danger 5 N ' October 4-Warren O, Arlington 19. lVarren suH'ered its second defeat when it failed to stop -lohnson, fast Arlington back, who was instrumental in scoring all three touchdowns. The high offensive point of the game was the pass snatching of Cliff l'hilip and Wally .-Xmes who together caught ten passes. October 12-Lake Forest 6, Warren 12. The Homecoming game found the Blue llevils at their peak. lleck snagged a pass from llill Philip and ran for a touchdown in the opening minutes of play. DeZurik took the ball over in the second quarter and the score stood 12 to 0 at the half. ln the third quarter. Lake Forest released a smashing attack, and Stanley, Lake Forest back. carried the ball across the goal for a touchdown. ln the fourth quarter the Lake Forest team brought the ball to the three-yard line, but the XYarren team held them for downs. October 18-Franklin Park 20, Warren 0. The fast Leyden team was held to a scoreless tie for three quarters by the XVarren team but they broke away in the last quarter to push over three touchdowns. November 1-Libertyville 28, Warren 6. XYarren lost the last game of the season when the Libertyville passing attack proved too much for them. Ken llarlan scored the first touchdown of the game shortly after the opening whistle when he carried the ball over from the 5-yard line after completing two long passes to Isaacson to put the ball in scoring position. Isaacson scored the second and third touchdowns on passes from Harlan. Tritz, the Libertyville fullback, scored the last touchdown when he intercepted a XYarren pass. XVarren scored its lone touchdown on a pass from Bill Philip to Rosene. FOOTBALL Nl R. Kl'fl.TUN .lllllelir tlvurlt al R. 'l'hese were basketball, boxing, softball. tennis, and golf. As a means of building up material to repre- sent Warren in 1957 and 1958 in basketball a six weeks' course in fudamentals was given to a group of boys by Klr. Mendenhall during the lat- ter part of the basketball season. ln order to show boys the art of self-defense, boxing was introduced at Warren for the first time in several years. l'nder the direction of Mr. Iielton, the boys were drilled on fundamentals tilei, l'ortegys, Ames, Strahan, C. Philip, XYells, earlock. Rosene, liecky, Nordberg, llrya. Cavanaug for two weeks and then started in on short no- decision bouts. ln all, six weeks were devoted to this sport. ending with everyone's making one or more public appearances. XYarren's new athletic field is being used more extensively this year than ever before with the installation of softball diamonds, new tennis courts, and a golf green which is being used for putting and approaching. L'nder the direction of Mr. lielton seventy boys are engaged in league softball, and some thirty are learning the funda- mentals of golf. The softball league is playing a regular schedule with some interesting games in store for the players, and some outside games are also being scheduled for those freshmen who now show promise of playing conference baseball. ASSEMBLY PROGRAMS The school has as one of its major educational aims the training of students in the art ot' speaking from the platform. liducation becomes of greater usefulness to individuals and to socitty it those trained in secondary schools, such as ours, are able to present their ideas in a logical, ftorreiul, and intelligent manner before others. l'upils like to see their own friends participating in assembly programs. The joy that they derive from seeing a member of their own group do exceptional work upon the platform is one ot' the pleasant experiences that they have in high school. VVhile this is true. pupils not only enjoy but also need the example set by such professional talent as was shown in the programs of I.t. l.ofgren of the Byrd lfxpedition, George lflias, ,lessie Rae Taylor.
