The 1981-82 Varsity cheerleading squad consisted of thirteen girls led by captains Shelli Cavitch and Margie Au- renzi. Eight girls made up the J.V. squad with Loreen Williams and Karen Wiseburn leading the way. Both squads attended a summer camp, and for the second consecutive year, Varsity was chosen Grand Champ- ions. They were awarded many ribbons, a trophy, and the “spirit stick” for being the most spirited squad at the camp. This summer spirit continued into the Fall and Winter as the girls cheered for football, soccer, basketball and wrest- ling. They held pep-rallies and a cheer- leading clinic for children. They prepared breakfasts for the senior athletes and participated in several competitions. The cheerleaders work non-stop from June until March. Their goals are to promote good sportsmanship, team spir- it, community involvement, and an ap- preciation of our school and its activities. They play an important part in our athletic program and can always be counted on to get the crowd “rowdie.” 15 THE BAND “ON BROADWAY” 16 Nancy Weber, April Spinks, John Lynch. Debbie Cullen, and Barb Braun play their saxo phones while marching to the beat ol the music. This year the Warren Hills Blue Streak marching band, under the direction of Ms. Marian Dolan and Mr. Mark Scirotto, had a terrific season. The band got off toa late start, but by no means a bad one. With drum majors Mike Roy and Lisa Bormann leading the enthusiasm, the Blue Streaks were praised for their exceptional talent. In- cluded in their repertoire were such songs as, Strike Up the Band,” “On Broadway,” “Blues in the Night,” and the theme from “Ice Castles.” “On Broadway seemed to draw the biggest response from the crowd. In addition to the traditional halftime program, the band was busy in the competition circuit. They competed in contests at Jonathan Dayton Regional, North Hunterdon, Catasaqua, North- ampton, Easton, and Pocono Mountain, Pa. This won the Streaks a spot in Chapter Championships. Following much pride and hard work, the Blue Streaks reached a victory of gaining over twenty points overall from where they had started in the beginning of the competitive season. This resulted in qualifying them for the Atlantic Coast Championships in November. 17 TWIRLERS: Kneeling: Co Caplains Judy Flynn and Denise Adams Standing: Gretchen Honecker. Coach Heverin said “Do itand DO IT is what the team did winning the D .R .C. Champ- ionship. The key factors were the leader- ship of the sixteen seniors, hard work, commitment, and determination. The great desire to win was displayed by the Streaks in a few tough games where they had to come from behind to win. This season proved to be a glorious one for both the coaches and the players, lead by captains Ralph Sinkbeil, Albert Howe, Rob Plenge, Mark Fisher and Darryl Long. Coaches Dietzi, Paulus and Swinson along with head coach Joe Heverin, in his final season, turned the previous 3-6 team into an 8-2 power- house. The coaching staff brought out emotion and also pulled the team to- gether. These were needed ingredients for success in ’81. The Streaks started their ’81 campaign with a sound victory over Del. Val. The following week they crushed Belvi- dere 24-10 the preseason favorite to win the D.R.C. After Bel videre, Hackettstown handed the Streaks their only DRC defeat. The Streaks bounced back with victories over a strong North Hunterdon team and a tough South team. Their next victory came against Voorhees- a game in which the Streaks were under- dogs to the defending DRC champs. The Streaks kept climbing to the top with wins over Catholic and Warren County League opponent North Warren. The following week the Streaks were involved in the only home state playoff game in the school’s history, where they suffered a 29-12 defeat to the Bulldogs of Dayton Regional. This proved to be the weakest effort of the awesome Streak defense which was 1 in the the DRC allowing only an average of 6.3 points a game. The final week, the Streaks had a thrilling 21-16 victory over arch rival Hunterdon Central. The game clinched the Blue Streak tie for the DRC championship with Voorhees. Led by captains Sharon Angelozzi and Diana Seguine, the Streaks ended up third in the D.R.C. with a record of 12-4-3. They advanced to the State Tournament where they met Butler in the second round. Not having beaten Butler in several years, the girls were determined to win. It was a long and hard-fought game but the Streaks emerged victorious in the end with the score 1-0. Their next game was against Mount Olive. Even though the Streaks took an early lead in the game, Mount Olive was able to come back and score two goals to defeat the Streaks 2-1. Although J.V. teams don’t count in the D.R.C. standings, the 1981 Blue Streak J.V. team should have. They finished the season undefeated, with a record of 16-0-2. Both teams did exceptionally well, and with only seven seniors graduating, the girls look forward to an even more successful 1982 season. Though the team was helped by three freshman, there was no J.V. or girls team. The highlight of the year was Steve Noctor, who not only was the M.V.P. of the Streaks, but also was 3rd in the Bernard’s Tournament, 7th in the D.R.C. 1st in the State Sectionals, 8th in the Group II State Finals, and 36th in AllGroup State Finals. 35 Warren County Champions The 1981-82 Blue Streaks Boys Basketball team, under the coaching of Mike Hayes and Jeff Swinson, had high expectations. They boasted a backcourt of three giants, with 67 Randy Kane flanked by 6 6 Bob Ort and 6’4” Ken Haller. The front court had experience, with Joe Toole and Rob Plenge. With a team of such height and experience, the Blue Streaks were favored as a contender for the D.R.C. title. The season started slow, with the Streaks losing their first two games. But they got the ball rolling with wins over Belvidere and P’burg Catholic. Although the Streaks didn’t win the Christmas Tournament, they continued to show how good they were. After losing some close games to tough teams, the Streaks rattled off seven straight wins, including a win at Hackettstown, and a record breaking effort with Belvidere. The Streaks scored 100 points which broke the schools single game of high of % points. The Streaks finished the season in second place in the D.R.C. and first in the Warren County League. In a hard played play-off game, the Streaks lost to visiting North Hunterdon. The Streaks went on to play Vailsburg in the states. Although the team played their best, they lost the game. Next year’s team has much to look forward to, despite losing five seniors. The team will have players who participated on the varsity level plus some prospects from the J.V. team. Finish- ing with an overall record of 11-12, Coach Al Annunziata could be no less than thrilled. Led by captain Diana Seguine, the girls opened the season with a victory over Pope John. Their win over Voorhees (39-35) gave the girls the incentive to go all the way. By beating North Warren in the final game of the regular season, the girls clinched the Warren County League title. They also made it to the States and met Dover in the first round. Although the girls gave it their all, they were unable to beat Dover thereby ending the ’81-’82 season. There’s no better way to describe what the 1981-82 Varsity wrestling team accomplished. An overall record of 15-4-0 enabled the Streaks to be ranked sixth in the state by a coaches’ poll. Captains Ralph Sinkbeil, Angelo Per- rucci, and Pat Dippel, along with the rest of the Varsity starters led the team on to the Group 2 Section 2 champion- ship with victories over Boonton and previously unbeaten Dover. The Streaks ended up with third in the state as a Group 2 school. Victories over Del Val and Hunterdon Central helped the Streaks on to a third place tie in the DRC with a record of 6-2. They were also the Christmas Tournament champs, and ended up second in the Districts. Individual accomplishments included Ron Yawger and John Smith as District Champs with Pat Dippel, Ralph Sinkbeil, and Bill Zaidie as runners-up. In Regional competition, Ralph Sinkbeil finished first, with Bill Ziadie in third and Pat Dippel in fourth. The new members are inducted into NHS at a candlelight ceremony attend- ed by their parents and stu- dents who have made the honor roll during the year. This year NHS worked on a proposed idea of an honor pass system. The honor passes were issued to mem- bers first on a trial basis. The annual Rent-a-Teach- er Day was held on February 11th. This year’s Rent-a- Teacher Day was marked by two surprises: the first was having Mr. Grassi, retir- ed U.S. History teacher re- turn to render his services for the day and the second was having Mr. Cabone, a substitute teacher being rent- ed for $275 by the sophomore class. This year about $500 was raised for two Warren Hills Scholarships! Front: Linda Bowlby (Secretary), Valene Schaare, Denise Fulgoni (Vice President). One of the largest and most active student organizations in the school is the Future Farmers of America. Under the guidance of advisors Mr. Rupeli and Mr. Elsaesser, the FFA seeks to train students for a career in agriculture by using hands-on experience. Students inFFA participated in innum- erable projects throughout the entire year. The club kept busy at the school itself by growing and successfully con- tracting its field corn, repairing the tractors for area farmers and butchering some of their own livestock. The animal room with it's chickens, rabbits and two heifers occupied students during the year, while the greenhouse saw a lot of activity with flowers for holidays and also the starting of plants for local gardeners. Special activities included the FFA week in February, where students pre- sented programs to the eighth graders trying to interest them in the FFA along with a radio presentation to make the community aware of FFA activities. Dur- ing the week Mr. Rupeli, Joel Schnetzer, and Bill Kaiser visited Trenton where they talked to the State Secretary of Agriculture and visited the government agencies. As part of the Food for America program, First Graders were brought to the school where they learned about farming. During the summer, Warren Hills FFA had a display at the Warren County Fair and participated in the various contests there. The local chapter also sent teams to Judging contests through out the state and nation. The small engine repair team was the first in the state and third in the Northeastern Region. The soils judging team came in third in the state, and the livestock judging team was first in the state and competed in the Nationals. Five members of the local organization and Mr. Elsaesser attended the National Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. Among those attending, was John Spud” Gojdycz who was elected to the National FFA band. For these individuals, the National Convention was the high- light of the year, but for all in FFA the year was busy, productive, and fun. Those Victorious Seniors Once again the annual Powder Puff Football game was held with much success for the seniors. The Senior girls vs. the Junior girls game this year was held at night, which seemed to ignite enthusiasm on both teams. So tradition has had it in the past, the seniors, coached by Angelo Perrucci, overcame the juniors (coach- ed by Eddie Froelich) in a 14-6 victory that will be remembered by all who were present. Both teams performed antics which were never before seen in any other Powder Puff game, and the announcer Dave Haytaian, and Mike Paolicelli spiced up the event with their “not yet ready for the radio” commentaries. A contributing factor to the success of the club was the large increase in membership. With sixty-three members, the club started out the year with a Bowl-a-thon to increase the size of their treasury. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, they collected non-perishable food items and toys for the needy families in the area. November 8th- 15th was National Key Club Week, and there was something planned for each day. The fruit sale was started, there was a dedication to all the veterans from W.H.R., the Bowl-a-thon was held, and two days were set aside to help paint the park’s bleachers in the spring. Throughout the year they also participated in a Rock-n Rollathon for the Heart Association, they painted a slogan in the gym to add to the school spirit, and also helped Kiawanis with their annual Pancake Breakfast. Highlights of the year included the presen- tation by Kiwanis, Key Club’s sponsor, of a bell and gavel, and also the New Jersey annual District Convention weekend which was held at Tamiment, a Pocono resort. Eighteen members went on the weekend along with Mr. Heverinand Mrs. Bowen, their advisors, and Mr. Rick Rhinehart, Kiwanis advisor. The weekend allowed them to get together with Key Clubs from all over New Jersey, and everyone had a lot of fun. Sitting: R. Sinkbeil, R. Plenge, M. Malejko, S. Devine, L. Piscitelli, D. Cannito, K. Students who are interested in retail and wholesale sales and management jobs are given an unexcelled opportunity to develop their know-how through the club. The display cases which can be seen in a few places in the school are prepared and set up by the members of the club. 64 From North to South Hi! I’m an exchange student from Norway (North Norway on an island called Andoya). I had heard a lot about students from U.S. in Norwegian schools and Scandinavian students in schools in U.S. sol decided to try and see if I could be able to go over. And as you can see, I did. The organization I’m in is American Scandinavian Exchange Student (ASSE). I came to the United States to learn the language, learn about the country, the American people which are very nice, and American food which is very good and fattening (ha, ha). A high light of my year was being part of Warren Hills marching band, because we don’t have march- ing band in Norway. The difference between Norweigian schools and American schools is that we can take the subjects we want in American schools, but in Norway we have to take what they give us. There is a lot of small differences, but I easily adjusted to them. Berit Karlsen Top: Berit concentrates on her U.S. History lesson. Brings People Together The American Field Service was a small but enthusiastic club this year. Along with their advisor, Mrs. Bowen, the members held fund raising activities for their AFS weekend in the spring, and also to pay for various school expenses for Stephanie Devine this year’s exchange student. The members worked at the concession stands during all home football games, sold donuts and cider at the Powder Puff game, held a bake sale and also sold carnations at Christmas. In the fall, they threw a welcome to USA cover dish and birthday party for Stephanie. In April, they had an AFS weekend. Exchange students from area schools attended. The students stayed with members of the club and went to school with them for a day. A progres- sive dinner, a party, and a dance also contributed to the weekend fun. Above: Standing: Fran Berberich. Sandy Snyder Below: The AFS surprised South African exchange student, Stephanie Devine, with a combination birthday and “Welcome to the USA. party. 66 From South to North Why does an exchange student decide to go and live in another country for a year? This was really an easy decision for me, because I wanted to experience a totally different way of life to the one that I was used to. The United States was my first choice, as I wanted to go to an American school and be part of an American family and community. I have experienced many different things since I’ve been here. One of the strangest times of my year was Christmas because in South Africa, Christmas is in the summer and here we had snow. Snow was as exciting as it was new to me, but I wish that we could have snow and a temperature of 80°F at the same time. It was quite difficult for me learning American slang, as our slang is quite different, and so often I didn’t understand what people were saying. A big difference in school was not wearing a uniform. I attended a public school in South Africa and we wore a uniform each day, so I really found it difficult deciding what to wear each day. It is impossible to condense all my experienc- es, because I’ve had so many. A.F.S. is a unique experience and my year at Warren Hills and all the friends I’ve made, have been an unforgettable part of my experience. Stephanie 67 Medical Club. . .Revived Again! Free time was the only quality that this year’s staff lacked. There were five deadlines spread out over the year, the first in December and the last in March, and the Publications Room was in a frenzy before each of them. It became a custom to stay late on the night before a dreaded deadline, with pizza for dinner being the only compensa- tion. Though tired the following day, the staff always made it through those crazy nights. Mr. Nace, the advisor, attempted to keep everyone sane, but by doing so ended up crazy himself. Mr. Paliscak and his staff handled the business mat- ters. But whether it was smiles on their faces or looks of despair, everyone involved in the task of publishing the 1982 LAMATON put forth a first class effort to make the yearbook a success. Under the guidance of Marian Dolan, the group first met and held auditions in early November. Over Christmas vacation, a break-in occured at the school, resulting in the loss of all the stage band’s amplifiers. Working with loaned electronic equipment, the Stage Band was able to perform while on the Spring band trip. They provided entertainment at several Spring functions, and participated in a small number of jazz band competitions. On Faith, Hope, and Charity Day, WHR chorus members were part of a 1300 student choir performing at Stabler Arena to benefit disabled persons. The group sang at Zachie’s in December for the Deborah Hospital Heart Fund, and gave part of their Christmas concert at Warren Haven. Chorus took part in a presentation of Related Arts - music, dance, visual arts - to our Board of Education; they also sang in the Warren County Chorus. All of these appearances are tied together by the thread of hard work. The effort put in by this year’s chorus was obviously worth it! Members sing their hearts out during the Halleluja Chorus” finale ot the Christmas concert. 79 Shenandoah Both Faculty members and students participated in the annual Spring produc- tion on April 1, 2, 3. This year’s play was Shenandoah, a musical drama depicting the struggle of a family to stay out of the Civil War. As always, it took effort to make this production work. People on stage were important to the show, but they could not have done their best if sets had not been built, costumes not provided, music not played. The show will never “go on” if cooperation does not exist between the cast and the crew, the musicians and the director Shenandoah’ssuccessat War- ren Hills cannot be attributed to a single person — the credit belongs to everyone who helped, in whatever way. Architectural Design and Mechanical Drawing open the world of design to the individual. The student is allowed to plan and execute his own projects, thus encouraging a person’s own creativity and individuality. Students wishing to have an occupa- tion working with metal are advised to enroll in Metal Shop. Similarly, Wood Shop is for students considering going into this field of work. Both shops offer students experience with production work. Some students prefer working out- doors. For these students, Ag classes are offered. Students perform the vari- ous duties which must be done daily, should they choose a farm related occu- pation. The subjects covered include Horticulture, Ornamental Horticulture, Agronomy, and Animal Husbandry. Bill Kaiser, Joel Schnetzer, Allen Smith and John Wasser work on Christmas wreaths. 90 Mr. Elsaesser explains the fine points of tractor maintenance. Juniors and Seniors must take Health for one marking period. Juniors take a course in Mental Health, while Seniors take the Sex Education course. If a student does not wish to take either of these courses he may enroll in a First Aid course. Sophomores must take Drivers Education. Seniors are also allowed to participate in the Wilderness Experience Program. Through this experience, the individual learns to trust his peers and also learns about his own abilities. From Euclid to Newton There are many courses offered in the Mathematics program. The students who wish to enter college are required to take two C.P. courses which consist of Algebra I and II, Integrated and Analytic Geometry and Trigonometry, and many more. Those students not planning on college are advised to take math courses more applicable to their future vocations, such as Business Math or Fundamentals of Geometry. All stu- dents must successfully complete two years of math before graduation. The foreign languages offered at Warren Hills include Spanish, French, and German. In these classes, the stu- dent is not only taught the language, but also learns about the cultural aspects of the country from where the languages originated. The student also learns the geography of the land as well as the products that are produced and export- ed from that country. 97 Preparing For Tomorrow’s mn Technology Johnette Bennett The Science programs include Phy- sics, Physical Science, Earth Science, Biology, and Chemistry. Each student must successfully complete at least two years of any science as a require- ment for graduation. Each science course helps to better the student’s knowledge of the tech- nology which is being used now and in the future. It will also teach the student how the technological advanc- es will affect the environment. Philip Tosto Curtis Tucker Greg Warren seems quite pleased with the results of his experiment. These courses take the student from the days of the Civil War to the present. Students learn the important factors which have made our nation what it is today. The World History course helps the student understand the cultural and ethnical backgrounds of other countries and the type of life lead by the people in these countries. The courses of Sociology and Psych- ology help the student to understand the basis and structure of our society and the reasons for the various situa- tions which arise in our society. The Horizons program consists of a group of students who are talented in the various fields of education. In order to be eligible for this program the stu- dent must score well on a test and they must have a recommendation from their teacher. The coordinator for this program is Mrs. Kugelmeyer. The program offers more of a challenge to students who find the normal classes offered unfull- filling. Through convocations, field trips, other special programs and independent studies, the student learns many things through different techniques. This year the Horizons convocation was held in Washington, D.C. The subject discussed was “Who has the power?” and dealt with the politics of the United States. It was a three day trip and the students visited such places as the House of Representatives and the White House. The Horizons students experienced the many problems which arise, in the running of a government. Top: Mike Paolicelli expresses his ideas to the rest of the Horizon group. Students are introduced to various skills such as typing, steno- graphy, office practice, accounting and business law, which will help them in their future occupation. C.I.E. stands for Cooperative Indus- trial Education. It teaches the student the skills needed for certain trades and industrial occupations. The C.O.E. pro- gram, Cooperative Office Education, trains the student for clerical and secre- tarial jobs. Cooperative Agricultural Education, C.A.E., familiarizes the stu- dents with the various skills involved in an agricultural occupation. The Distrib- utive Education program trains the stu- dent in the retailing and marketing business. The object of the C.I.E., C.O.E., and D.E. is to allow the student to receive on the job training from cooperating employers. The students must attend a half day of school with a four period schedule. They must take the following four courses, English, History, Physical Education, and its related class. The other half of their day is spent receiving training, while working on jobs. 107 Beauty Among the Hills The creativity needed to show one’s personal expression may be seen through the projects of the fine arts students. These projects are an exten- sion of each individual’s personality. Mrs. Kugelmeyer and Miss Whitenight encourage creativity through General Art, Commercial Art I and II, and other art classes which are offered to the students. Throughout the year, the students’ projects may be seen on dis- play in both art rooms. This year the concert and marching band were under the direction of Ms. Marian Dolan. The band classes are offered to those students who wish to express themselves through music. The chorus is also a class in which students may extend their personality. The chorus, under the direction of Miss Mary Zanette, has been doing well this year. Two concerts were given, one at Christmas and one in the spring. The band and chorus did a great job at both of these performances. Top: Liz Zubeck, Mike Mannon and Chris Bormann practice on their brass instruments. Here at Warren Hills the students are fashion con- UUU Punk scious. Some of the latest fads and fashions seen are knickers, rubber duck shoes, cowboy boots, pants which gather at the ankles, and leg warmers. Being the small school that we are, fashions usually are “in” at WHR at least a year after they have been introduced into the fashion world. Take for instance baggy jeans. When they were first advertised on T V. and in magazines most people were reluctant to even think of buying the new style of jeans. Slowly people became more daring and now baggies are accepted by almost everyone. Of the many different styles seen at WHR we have chosen four styles to focus on; purple, preppy, punk, and also dressy. Margie Aurenzi, Kurt Hoeflein, Vaughn Scala, and Beth Lord fit respectively into each of these categories. There are many different views of what the definition of fashion is but all four students agreed that fashion is what each individual is comfortable wearing. Asked why each wore the style of clothes that they did each had a different reply. Beth does because she feels that the clothes should be a reflection of the wearer and should also be liked by the wearer. Margie wears a lot of purple because it’s versatile, it’s a color for any season and because it has so many color intensities within itself. Finally we come to Vaughn Scala who dresses the way he does because he likes to be different and he likes to stand out in a crowd. Because fashion is everchanging, it is impossible to mention all of the styles seen at WHR. Left: Beth Lord is an example of the “dressy” look. MITCHELL ROBERT PAGE KANDY LYNN PANZA Flight and Fantasy In Warren Hills, there are a great diversity of interests. Every- one has a favorite passtime, rang- ing from cake decorating and motor cross racing to flying an airplane and writing short stories. Mark Hallett has a great interest in flying airplanes. He became interested in airplanes through his father, who also enjoyed flying. Mark has a private pilot’s license and is permitted to operate Cessna (140,120,150,172’s) and Cherokee (140, 180’s). Unknown to many of her classmates, Deirdre Kugelmeyer has exceptional writ- ing ability. This year she had her short story “Threshold” published in a book entitled Shadows edited by Charlie Grant. Shadows contains seventeen “haunting and unsettling” short stories. In the introduction of the book, Charlie Grant compliments Deirdre on her excellent writing style. When asked why she likes to write, Deirdre replied, “I’m good at writing, and it gives me a chance to use my imagination which I enjoy doing.” VERDON PENSYL ANGELO M. People have developed different tastes in music and have played thier own instru- ments to expand their musical talents. Matt Nerbak (Opposite Top) has been playing the drums for about five years. He started in 8th grade and he has been playing since then. “I think what got me interested in the drums was a friend of mine. He played drums and played very well. He taught me different beats. That’s when I took off and started playing the set and taking lessons. I’ve always liked music; I played the trumpet for four years before I got interested in the drums.” Matt prefers jazz, but he said he is “basically open to play just about any form of music.” He was in three different bands, excluding the school band and stage band; “they were rock bands.” Matt is presently in a new band in which he helps write the music. They play funk, jazz, and rock. Chris Bry-Nildsen (Opposite Bottom) has been playing bass guitar for three years. He likes to listen to Blues, Jazz, and Rock. He first became interested in bass guitar in 8th grade. “I used to play Jim Brown’s Ibanez in the band room.” Chris took guitar lessons and played with different people; ‘We just jammed together.” Mike Paolicelli (Above) plays the electric guitar. He’s been playing for three years. Mike likes to listen to Van Halen, Rush, and The Beatles. He has never taken guitar lessons before -he taught himself how to play. “I have played with other people before, but nothing serious has ever come out of it. When Warren Hills first started to publish a yearbook in 1968, they chose LAMATON as its name. LAMATON comes from the Leni- Lenape Indians and is translated OUR PLACE AMONG THE HILLS. This translation was the basis for this year’s yearbook theme. This year we have tried to show that there are mountains and valleys in everyone’s life and we have shared them together as we seel, “our place among the hills.” LAMATON EDITORIAL STAFF EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Sandy Snyder SPORTS Debbi Demyan Michael Webb STUDENT LIFE Mike Paolicelli FACULTY CURRICULUM Donna Zimmerman UNDERCLASS Colleen McGinnis SENIORS Diane Schildknecht BUSINESS Marj Henning PHOTO Luis Santiago BUSINESS ADVISOR Mr. Paul Paliscak ADVISOR Mr. David Nace A special thanks to Mr. Norczyk for his hard work in taking and developing pictures for the yearbook.
