Cross Country, a sport not usually in the limelight, retained that image this year, but the fine efforts of each team member mer- ited individual recognition, such as Dave Brewster, who broke the Warren Hills, as well as the Belvidere course records, and Tom Kel- ley was always among the top finishers. Tom and Dave were also the squad’s co-captains. Rounding out the team were Scott Diller, Don Freezer, Fred Biggs, and Kim Searfoss, all of whom put forth tre- mendous time and effort toward their winning season. However, we may well be counseled by the words of Thomas Paine: Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it. The rugged individualism of the past century has necessarily been curbed by the altered society of the 20th Century. Population explosion and population implosion have created gigantic cities wherein the individual is totally dependent upon an increasingly complex economy for food, shelter and other necessities. The totally self-sustaining man is non-existent therein. Yet, with all this social and economic interdependence, we find ever greater emphasis in our laws and courts on the rights of the individual. Such has been the viable nature of our democracy in its adaptation to major change without destroying individualism. Let us with courage determine that we will personally guard our liberty for ourselves and for the total society within which we are inseparably bound. Eric Errickson, Superintendent TO THE SENIORS: To have the proper prospective of life and its meaning, you will be called upon to make decisions wisely and to express your opinions cautiously. We trust that your school has helped to give you the mental and moral courage to make decisions as worthy members of a democracy. You are graduating from high school at one of the most challenging times in our history. To you comes the opportunity to live upright and worth- while lives, the opportunity to help build better relationships between different groups in our country, and the opportunity of developing and harnessing the new scientific discoveries for the well-being of man. Your choices will make a difference. They will depend upon how well you have learned your lessons of industry, honesty, courtesy, courage, and integrity ■ and how well you exercise them. Your opinions and influence will count. Your successes are our successes and your failures are our failures. 1 sincerely congratulate you upon your graduation. I hope your years to come will be kind, fruitful, useful and happy ones. May the guidance of a divine providence be yours to the end and that each of you may be happy, contributing citizens in a peace- ful world order. MR. MICHAEL BURC1N, Principal The individual often believes that there is nothing he can do about the problems of the world, or those of his own local environment. This is a common mistake, for there isn't a problem of any magnitude which does not begin where you are. Always you can diminish or add to it. Not to be aware of this - not knowing the difference you make - is in itself one of the biggest problems. Your hand can make a mistake or correct one. Or it can do nothing. With your mind as with your hand they can serve your need alone ... or serve another ... or serve no one. The decision is yours. This is the wonder and the challenge of our lives. For the harsh fact of our lives is how free we are to do nothing. Or to do the wrong thing: to hurt not only others but ourselves. Yet the great thing of our lives is how free we are to start again; to find a better path - from whatever wrong turn we or our world may have taken. The power is the individuals. MR.
