Text from Pages 1 - 208 of the 1971 volume:

When ve think of yesterday we think of high school where everything begins and ends The beginning of adulthood the end of childhood We remember faces which remind us of an experience or thought The thoughts fade each beginning and ending with a face We remember four years of lasting memories to cherish and love forever A time of growth, maturity, individu- ality yet always unity Valuable experiences prepaid us for a life of involvement Joy and sometimes sorrow in all we endeavor We will mark our way with tmth and desire to live We will continue to fulfill and be fulfilled I remember many different ideas each unique as its sponsor I think of the student body where one is only a single unit but also an individual One capable of expressing an opinion and evaluating those of others I remember a forum of thought a union of beliefs a blending of feelings a constant exchange of opinion I think of the active involvement in these beliefs made by these individuals in order to benefit all 5 0 6 I think of class and my chair always waiting for me even when I didn’t show up My mind was elated by images and experiences and stimulated by the discussions of my classmates I remember the joy and the sorrows and the first A and the first F I remember the constant challenge the groping for knowledge the struggle to comprehend 8 I remember the carefree times all too short and gone now And hours spent doing nothing enjoying myself and the company of others splurging my free time a little here and there extracting pleasure from my surroundings and those around me I For me there was a special kind of living Going from day to day moving always upward fighting challenges defeating tasks, some defeating me Always I came back ready for more II But most of all I remember Freedom and its best and worst Freedom to reach, but not necessarily freedom to receive Freedom to think, but not necessarily freedom to believe and my words like silent raindrops fell, echo the sounds of silence. 15 There is a new beginning for each of us We come to the crossroads and must separate groping to possess moments which escaped so subtly we were unaware of th ir departure Yet taking with us the truth we have searched for and found in each other 1rtrrtf: rf}}? 'A ’AWjfc. Each of us has benefited by the experience of Warren Hills but that experience is not so easily defined . . . and the interpretation remains a personal one 16 We leave - surging forth bringing to the world everything we have encountered in every person for we can never span new horizons until we have looked beyond the old We give - to our fellowman the most beautiful gift that lives within our soul A gift that is nourished by a total submission one which only the fulfilled individual can understand love SPORTS 19 Warren Hills 0 Delaware Valley 15 Warren Hills 8 Belvidere 20 Warren Hills 0 Hackettstown 14 Warren Hills 0 N. Although the team failed to claim a single victory, each of the members was recognized for their outstanding efforts, unrelenting deter- mination, and unconquerable spirit. Tri-captains Ron Butler, Keith Robinson, and Keith Whedon led their teammates against opponents with skill, ability, and leadership. Three members of Coach Mil- ler's team were cited as outstanding players. They were Ron But- ler, all-DRC offensive tackle; Keith Whedon, all-DRC defensive back; and a junior, Dana Opdyke, all-DRC offensive tackle. Late in die summer, these boys can be seen working out in pre- paration for the up-coming season. Sacrificing much, but gaining immense satisfaction and other rewards in return for their participa- tion. These boys bring, to football at Warren Hills a deep sense of courage, fortitude, ana determination. L. Finkle, L. Risko, C. Barna, T. Peyrek, R. Butler, R. Malanga, J. Petty, D. Thomas, D, Brown, B. With the gym always filled to capacity, the Streak grapplers have fought for and won many victories. As a result of their dedication and sacri- fice, they were awarded fifth place in the state standings. Sportsmanship and fortitude was clearly present in each member of the team as they held the spectators spell-bound at each exciting match. Cross Country Often unattended, Cross Country matches reveal an- other side of Warren Hills' athletic participation. Except for his teammates, the cross country runner usually finds himself alone in his quest. Despite the absence of vocal support, these boys strive to cap- ture victory. Even before school opens in September, the members of the team can be found out on the field practicing to improve their skills. These girls, coach- ed by Mrs. Pantuso and Miss Cole, work hard through the heat of the summer and the bitterness of the fall. During the season, the girls celebrated their efforts with a picnic, and later, a dinner. The senior members of the team took the coaches out to dinner. The efforts of those who did not play, but assisted the team in such ways as keeping score or watching the time, were greatly appre- ciated. Girls’ Basketball C. Fiore, K. Briski, R. Hight, D. The club, labeled ESCAPE by its members, is directed by Mr. Tosto. 78 80 FACULTY SECTION 81 Board of Education Mr. Charles Biggs, Mr. Alvin Eckert, Mr. Ralph Mitchell, Mr. Gus Kovalsky, Mr. Theo Coleman, Mrs. Sherman Ames, Mr. John Bowman, pres., Dr. Walter Ruszczyk, Mrs. Clarence Finkel. The men and women making up the Board have the constant strug- gle of keeping the school running smoothly. Elected from four municipalities making up the Regional, they meet the second Tuesday of every month for a general public meeting to vote on policies of the school. Smaller committee meetings continue on all nights during the month; however, this year's board has been especially busy in planning for the antici- pated growth in both the Senior and Junior High School. Mr. Lawerence Stopp 82 Mr. Eric G. Errickson Superintendent It is often a circuitous route that keeps youth Always on the Go seeking the greener grass on the other side of the fence. So much so that one often finds he has arrived when he approaches the point of de- parture. It stands to reason that one who keeps sight of basic ideals and values may short cut that circuitous route and arrive sooner at that point of maturity when true forward direction may characterize one's life. Your communities and their institutions and your homes offer many dedicated examples of persons who have devoted their lives to religious, charitable, business, fraternal, and civic ideals. Don’t lose sight of these people or fail to adopt similar worthy goals. Join the worthy endeavors. YOU will be needed. 83 Mr. Michael L. Burcin Principal It is with sincere pleasure and pride that I have this opportunity to wish you, the Senior Class of 1971, success in your future endeavors. As you enter upon the changes of adult life, I hope you will be ever mindful of your responsibilities to yourselves, your neighbors, your community and your nation to provide the same kinds of opportunities for future generations as was given to you. I hope you will always be cognizant of the fa ct that education of the youth of our nation is the greatest single responsibility we have. Whether or not you attend higher institutions of learning, I hope that your education will not cease with your graduation from high school, but will be an ever-continuing process throughout your lives. Michael Burcin Principal Vice-Principal Mr. William M. Irons The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them: That's the essence of inhumanity George Bernard Shaw I ask that those of you that read these words, pause and reflect upon their total meaning and their commandment for living. Recognize that ALONE, no man can save himself. ALONE, no man can find himself. ALONE on his island Robinson Crusoe was merely a highly ingenious animal. With the arrival of Friday, he became a man. We cannot love all our fellow men except in the most abstract way. But we can at least not be indifferent to them. We can cultivate awareness; we can try always to connect. The sense of connection is like a muscle. Unused, it withers. Exercised, it grows. I challenge each of you to exercise this muscle. To shed indifference; to put aside the sham of vocal involvement and become truly involved with mankind by being aware of our collective needs and actively working together for the betterment of the total spectrum or our society - school, community, state, and nation. Sincerely, M. William M. Irons 85 Secretarial Staff Perhaps the hardest workers in the school are the secretaries. Their job, lasting summer and winter, includes typing, sort- ing papers, taking and mimeographing messages and answering phones, among other tasks. The secretaries declare they enjoy working with both students and teach- ers, although a new trend was noted - new families and students. This is good be- cause it means the school is growing, but they agree they don't get to know as many students as they would like. Mrs. Susan Bodine Miss Dorothy Rost Mrs. Anna Elsaesser 87 Guidance The Guidance Office is known to many students as the General Complaint Bureau. Its main purpose is helping students decide on their futures. This includes college- bound students as well as those going into business. Miss Helen Stone, Director 90 The English Department this year introduced a successful new pro- gram. Each student was given the privilege of choosing a dif- ferent course for each of the four nine-week periods of the school year. A variety of topics were available, ranging from writing skills to theatre arts. Mr. Steven Moncher Mr. Irwin Rissmiller Mrs. Candy Fox Mr. David Swetnam 91 Mr. Anthony Ciofalo Mrs. Finita Fensel Languages The comprehension of foreign lan- guages and their cultures are an im- portant step in understanding and communicating with other countries. The language courses offered: Ger- man, Spanish, and French, help realize this goal. Special trips are made to museums, restaurants, or other places of interest which help students understand other customs, traditions and values. 93 Mr. John Sakalouckas Mr. Pierre Grassi History Mr. Alan Dutka We can only benefit from the knowledge of past experiences and apply these to the problems of today - this is the job of our History Department. Aside from history, several teach- ers also teach sociology and psychology. Also, World History Classes are made more interesting by the team teaching of Mr. Sterlachini and Mrs. Mayberry. Mrs. Marian Mayberry 95 Math Mrs. Evelyn Gulick 96 Mr. David Nace Mr. Richard Sauck Mathematic courses have many phases. Algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and some advanced cour- ses in calculus, logic, and Algebra III represent some of the offerings. Students have a chance to show their skill in different ways, ranging from classroom work to surveying. 97 Mrs. Sally Stover Mrs. Mary Lou Christine Business Students who are interested in en- tering the business world will find that our Business Education depart- ment can supply them with needed experience. Some courses will also help the college bound student. In office practice classes the girls take jobs at various offices to increase their skills. Business classes also provide many necessary skills for of- fice situations. Mrs. Sarah Lisook Mr. William Bower Mr. Paul Paliscak 99 Mr. Harold Musselman Science is necessary in the tech- nological world of today. Sev- eral courses offered at WHR of- ten require students to do their own projects. Chemistry students marvel at the experiments done in labs, Advanced Biolog)' stu- dents will many times find them- selves working with animals done as special projects, General Bio- logy students often take trips to study the environment, and Earth Science classes study the weather and our ever-changing planet. Mr. Curtis Tucker 100 Mr. Peter Cybuck Mr. Anthony Kietrys Mr. Philip Tosto Miss Joan Luff Science Miss Vicki Cole These programs benefit the student by em- phasizing physical fitness and good health. Gymnastics, basketball, hockey, football, and wrestling are some of the courses cov- ered during the year. These activities are also supplemented with a gymnastic show. Also, health counciling helps the student in personal and physical growth. 102 Mr. Jerrod Miller Mr. David Childs Mrs. Genya Pantuso Mr. John Goles - Driver Education Physical Education i Mr. Alfred Bowen Mr. Clifford Pursell Industrial Arts are a must for the chang- ing world of today. It is not an unfamil- iar sight to view these students in action caring for the school grounds, or working in shops. Trips and lectures are sponsored for a better understanding of today's new tools. Mr. Jay Rupell Miss Joan Whitenight Art gives a better perspective of the things around us. Each student has several projects to complete each year, such as leather work, sculpture, paint- ings, and handcrafting from sim- ple materials. They can be seen displayed in the library and at the exhibit arranged for the stu- dents and public. Mr. Sante Ragno Fine Arts Mrs. Donna Stortz Different music courses stem from the basic subjects of instrumental and vocal music. The band supports the school at football games and combines with the chorus to present two assemblies each year. The chorus also had a chance to sing before television cameras this year. The Warren Hills Music Department, student body, and staff feel a twinge of regret as Mr. Ragno retires this June. Library The Instructional Material Center would be a better name for the library, states Miss Stone. Not only does she average a 600 item circulation per week, but aided by Mrs. Campbell, she helps students select filmstrips ana recordings and duplicates material on the new copy-machine which Miss Stone refers to as God-send. Miss Evelyn Stone Miss Campbell Home Economics Being a homemaker is thought to be a very easy job, but we find that knowledge and skill are important fac- tors in creating a good home. A student in this course participates in making different foods and styles of clothing, according to her taste. Trips to differ- ent places supplement the Home Economics classes. Mrs. Lois Lattemam Mrs. Sue Roseberry Health Services Perhaps one of the busiest people in the school is the school nurse. Miss L'Hommedieu is called on in almost every emergency, and al- ways manages to come through. Routine jobs are dispensing aspirin and reviving students who have fainted, but many times in the year Miss Josephine L’Hommedieu her knowledge and patience is tested by real catastrophes. Special Education Mr. Stephen Ferrazzano A multi-media approach to education might best describe Mr. Ferrazzano s activities in the classroom. This year, with the arrival of the new Tach-X machine, Mr. Ferrazza- no was able to add another device to his ar- senal of new and up-dated teaching aids. 107 Custodial Staff Keeping a large school, such as Warren Hills, in or- der calls for much service and dedication. Our cus- todial staff manages to keep up with the ever-grow- ing list of activities and social events. CUSTODIAL STAFF: Mrs, Eileen Warian, Mr. Richard Crouse, Mr. Ira Burd, Mr. Chester Korzecki, Mr. Wesley Burdge 108 Cafeteria A well-balanced meal is pro- vided daily by the cafeteria staff. By cheerfully serving long lines of hungry students, they perform an appreciated service to the student body. CAFETERIA STAFF: Alice Lipskie, Norma Pallo, Gloria Polachak, Irene Howell, Julia Sidati, Ruth Radzio, Ruth Behsman, Pearl Maxwell 109 ■ ' I I L I no UNDERCLASS SECTION Ill Jim Paulaskaus, Dana Buckwalter, Ray Mueller, Lauren Hays, Faye Weeks SOPHOMORE CLASS The Sophomore Class exhibited great interest in the school by taking part in many activities this year. Officers were elected in early October. The sopho- mores then went on to conduct a highly successful magazine sale. Unfortunate- ly, despite a valiant fight, they lost the bundle drive, and entertained the rest of the student body with an assembly. G. Adamczyk W. Albanese D. Alleger D. Allen P. Angel J. Aschoff K. Eager and enthu- siastic, the Class of 1972 sought to leave a favorable and impressive trademark. The Juniors enjoyed a successful candy sale thanks to the tireless efforts of the members of the class and the class' ad- viser, Mrs. Finita Fensel. THOMAS WRIGHT III 183 CONGRATULATIONS to the Class of 1971 We like to play Hockey On fields that aren't rocky, And we like to run Down the field 'cause it's fun. The bully when taken is taken real quick If you get the ball, man, you’re pretty slick. Drive to your inner and out to your wing, Make a quick goal and hear the coaches sing. There's a thing called obstruction - you’ll have to watch that If the referee sees you - shell call the ball back. Don't hit anybody in the leg with your stick, It's bad for the wood - it might make a nick. Your stick over your shoulders better not go- Or you 11 hear a whistle and the ref say, no-no ! Advancing will be the umpire's call . . If anything but your stick hits the ball. Fullbacks mark inners and halfbacks mark wings Make sure that your goalie has legs that will swing. Dribble the ball down the field - do a dodge Into the goal cage the ball try to lodge. We like to write poems but we'd better not say it. We like the game Hockey - That’s why we played it.
