LAMATON - 1970 Washington, New Jersey Editor-in-Chief - Wesley L. Brook Associate Editor - Lynda Quick i I 5 Being Themselves Alone Or In a Crowd But Accepting the Challenge And Striving to Create a Tradition Activities Editor - Sharon Carev During the past year, Warren Hills has had the pleasure of welcoming to its halls Pieter Calliauw, our exchange student from Izgem, Belgium. Pete's cheerful Good morning and un- failing humor won him quick acceptance by the faculty and stu- dent body. Through his stay with his American brother, Charles Biggs, Pieter has both given much to the school and gained much also. He brought with him the highest ideals of the American Field Service and has unquestionably succeeded in fulfilling its purpose - to build a bridge of understanding between two worlds. 18 Through OPEN DOOR EXCHANGE this year, Joe Errickson acted as host for Edgardo Callao, of Santiago, Chile. During the 10 weeks which would have been his summer vacation, Edgardo became a member of the Junior Class at Warren Hills. His experiences here, in class and out, provided him with insight into American life. If communications on the national level compared as well as the com- munications between us and our exchange students, world peace would be more than a lofty ideal. 20 21 STUDENT COUNCIL experienced more freedom this year and ac cepted well the responsibility that goes with it. Under die guidance of Mrs. Christine, it carried out traditional programs like the Bundle Drive and Carnival, while working for new privileges such as girls wearing slacks to school. Through co-operation of students and ad- ministration the 1969-70 Student Council displayed itself as a true student forum. 22 MEMBERS: Karen Batson, Charles Biggs, Nadine Bryan, Sharon Carey, Rosemary DeFilippis, Gale Donaldson, Terri Fucci, Joanne Goles, Winnifred Hamlen, Joan Hampton, Kathy Herrick, Elaine Hommer, Denise Krawzak, Mary Mutchler, Cathy Orsi, Ellen Rutan, Lynne Tomlinson, Priscilla Ross, Richard Rhinehart, Jean Wadnik, Bruce Wolf, Robin Yencho. 24 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY in our school acts as an instrument of challenge to the student body. Members set an ex- ample of character, leadership, scholar- ship, and service which it hopes will be taken up by the entire school. Each spring at the candlelighting ceremony the chal- lenge is renewed to the betterment of school and community. 25 The ASSEMBLY SQUAD and the FIRE SQUAD are organizations through which young men can be of ser- vice to our school. Under the direction of Student Council, Assembly Squad boys aid at pep rallies and assemblies, while Fire Chief Kim Hagedorn and his assistants are always alert to the safety of the student body in the event of fire. 26 USHERS CLUB is the girls’ counterpart of Assembly Squad. Taking tickets at sports events and showing peo- ple to their seats at evening performances is their con- tribution to Warren Hills. 27 KEY CLUB is the junior division of Ki - wanis. Members attend luncheons regular- ly and become involved in the affairs of the community. These boys can often be seen selling programs at home football games. The CHESS CLUB gives boys and girls of the school a chance to exercise the faculties of their minds while engaging in competition with other schools. By selling candy apples at football games and sponsoring dances Mr. Sauck and the members raise money to enter various individual and team tournaments. 29 The FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA are responsible for the upkeep of our school grounds. They tend the lawns and learn about agriculture by planting the fields behind our school. They learn and put into use the aspects of farming taught by Mr. Rupell. 30 The FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA is a club which helps prepare girls for a career in nursing. With Miss L’Hommedieu they make trips to Warren Hospital, helping to decorate the wards, and most are active as candy- stripers. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA is a club which has, under the supervision of Mrs. Stover, hosted a banquet for Future Teacher Organizations of Warren County. They have also held money raising activities such as a bake sale. 32 The DRAMA CLUB presented two plays this year. Directed by Miss Marion Von Oven, students gave two performances of Teahouse of the August Moon, and later in the year brought experimental theatre to Warren Hills in a serious drama of life today, The Brick and the Rose. 33 LIBRARY COUNCIL is an organization of boys and girls who voluntarily give up their free periods in order to help Miss Stone in the library. They not only check out books and collect fines, but perform the all-important task of placing books back on the shelves. 34 The AUDIO-VISUAL STAFF, advised by Mr. Sauck, makes sure that teachers are supplied with movie projectors, record players and other audio-visual equipment. Co-ordinating the schedule of who gets what when is an important behind-the- scenes part of learning at Warren Hills. 35 CHORUS under the direction of Mr. Joseph An- gelina gives two performances annually, the Christ mas program and their Spring Concert. 36 BAND, headed by Sante Ragno, is a small but active group of student musicians. Not only do they provide entertainment during football halftime, but also give an annual Pop Concert in the spring. 37 The LAMATON staff began last summer the labor which has cul- minated in this year's yearbook. Advised by Mr. Moncher, Wesley Brook and his assistants were responsible for the layout and design, supplied with photos by the school photographer and the photo ser- vice. Mr. Paliscak and his typists handled the business arrangements and financial matters. 39 SPINNEL, the school newspaper, reorganized under the editorship of Denise Krawzak. Despite apathy and difficulty in getting people to work, four issues appeared throughout the year through the efforts of a dedicated few. 40 41 HI-Y boys, under the guidance of Mr. Sauck, meet weekly at the YMCA in Phillipsburg. They take part in a variety of sports and activities with boys from other schools. ) - f p t- ' «A.' 5 -. , r- A S cjj 'jjfo -i Miss Football — Judy Williams 43 L£t your TEACHER tVNtw fOu Cwt .VOTE Far V fc th« Kr.UfclX Clubs are not the only source of extracurri- cular activity at school. Frederick llhler, Mrs. Sherman Ames, Mrs. Herbert Trubek, Mrs. Clarence Finkle. MR. LAWRENCE STOPP - Business Manager 76 Best wishes to all of the members of the first class to graduate from a complete three-year sequence of studies at Warren Hills. As a group of students you entered this new building, for the first time, in competition with workmen for space in its unfinished halls. You saw the building completed. You adjusted to its facilities. Then, as a class unit, you matured together and became a consolidated working group well adapted to the new environment. Please be assured that all of us in the district office have appreciated your fine, mature approach to the problems and difficulties of these growing years and that the class of ’70 will hold a lasting place in the memories of all of us. MR. LAWRENCE ANDERSON 77 Superintendent Principal MR. ERIC ERRICKSON Your Class of 1970 is the first to have completed the full three years of Warren Hills Regional Senior High School. During that time you have seen the completion of a fine school building. Many of you have contributed to it in labor, artistic talent and other ways. More important you have contributed in the building of traditions and standards for our school which will be guidelines for those who will follow. Your faculty, administration and Board of Education have planned and made operational over twenty important additions and changes in curriculum planned and made operational over twenty important additions and changes in curriculum. I compliment you on the mature, orderly, democratic processes you have employed to achieve your goals. In an age of violence of protest it is most heartening to observe the fine leadership provided by your class. The successful bridging of the “generation gap” must, I believe, be a two way process. In this school you have done your part. A healthy coupling of your youthful idealism and vigor with the best of wisdom, knowledge, and spiritual values of your heritage will best direct you in the ever-increasing complexity of the modern world. With this year I complete my fourteenth year as a high school principal and take up new duties. I am happy to state that my confidence in the basic worth and qualities of youth remains unshaken. For this - Thank you! 78 Vice-Principal Mr. William Irons As we find ourselves rushing into a new decade, let us take time to reflect upon the words of John Donne: No man is an island, entire of its self; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main ...” The sentiment expressed here - that we should not act in isolation, but rather in concert with all people for the advancement and well-being of the total population - is the commit- ment of American public education. It should be your commitment for the 70’s and beyond. As the Commencement ceremony brings to a close your student days at Warren Hills, I ex tend to you my personal wishes for your future happiness and success. 79 Secretarial Staff MRS.
