Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1969 volume:

- «% - Ichiro Takada This year, our world was enlivened by Ichiro Takada, an American Field Service exchange student from Sapporo, Japan. Ichiro’s ready Hi!,” cheer- ful grin, and eagerness to help made him uncounted friends as he became a real part of the student body. Staying with the Edward Stovers of Washington, Ichiro quickly became Americanized, yet remained his own terrific self. Ichi- ro, whom we nicknamed Ichi, will always be remembered by every one who knew him. With our best wishes for health, happiness, and success we dedi- cate this 1969 LAMATON to our friend, Ichiro Takada. 2 At 8:00 Ichiro boards the bus. wide awake. School is a unique and personal world. War- ren Hills Regional Senior High School is such a world. Our school is a mosaic of activities cen- tering around the individual, yet involving the many. Each is concerned with his world yet conscious of his place in the ever-changing pattern of Warren Hills. The quest of each indi- vidual differs, each one aided by the wide op- portunities offered at his school. Their search is never ending, yet along the way, individuals find time for joy, sorrow, relaxation, frustra- tion and thought. Warren Hills sets among the scenic foothills of Warren County. 3 A Separate Peace At some time each individual finds himself alone. Yet he can never be alone because his thoughts bring him memories and reflections. Apart from humanity, an individual can explore his moods and express his feeling, thus enriching his life through contemplation and becoming more a part of his world. Why am I on detention? 4 English to some means sleep. I wonder if South Pacific was last night? 5 Term papers make school a prison. A Sea Of Faces Individuals must participate and become actively involved in friendship, activities and work to express themselves. Individuals, whose personali- ties are unique, can form a sea of faces; yet each contributes to the world of Warren Hills. Here each will find a life that only he can define. Barb gets the Christmas spirit working. 6 How can I be free Saturday night? Warren Hills is wonderful, our team is great! 7 Do you really want to dance Bill? Will Danny pass? Growing Friendships During break. Bob times the band Friendship enriches the life of each individual. Sharing precious moments, friends become a part of each other. In growing with each other, each experi- ence can become a source of knowl- edge that will lead the individual closer to the realization of his goals. Around us always are friends with whom we can relate, reminisce, and thank for making our everyday routine some- thing special. 9 Bob and Alice catch a moment in the hall. Actually Brian, this is my second lunch today. Tom gives notes for W.H. Auggie is an island of calm. Future Nurses brighten Warren Hospital. 10 Cheers for W.H. Timeout! Students Become Involved Individuals here are striving toward their goals and realiz- ing their quests. We have learned to develop our poten- tials through discovery. Our teachers have guided us. ever conscious of each students’ individuality, to realize these goals. We have explored, dis- covered. and created. In the spirit of discovery, each indi- vidual has contributed to his world at Warren Hills thus making it a part of everyone else’s. li Danny prepares a term paper. Overcoming The Challenge Out in front. Bill leads the cross country race. 12 Jubilation reigns at the close of our Hackettstown game. Steve’s and Shelley's Senior Day. Every individual is possessed with a desire to overcome a challenge. In ath- letics. an uncertain ‘Til try” changes to a positive “I will.” Although we en- deavored to turn every challenge into a win. we learned that our stinging moments of failure could become situ- ations in which we learned from de- feat. Athletes, individuals who become a team, give their all to Warren Hills as they meet their own special challenges. 13 Sidelined! Jaime wakes up. Moments Glow In Memory Individuals come to crossroads and sepa- rate. yet they will always be linked by the memories of moments that they have shared. Our lives are moments lengthened into years and as time passes we are caught up in their moods. Memories of friends, work, activities, and growth give unity to the individuality of War- ren Hills. The activities of this year will long be remembered from the fall football games to the recessional at graduation. In this 1969 Lamaton we have presented elements from which each individual can draw his own memories of people, places, things, and the moods of Warren Hills. 14 The pawn marches on. Football '68 has been a season of near excellence with a record of seven wins and two losses. The taste of defeat did not hamper our boys’ playing in any way. It made the taste of victory even sweeter. The fine coaching of the coaches and the co-operation of the team as a whole, has made football '68 a season to be proud of. John Rhinehart. an outstanding senior ath- lete. showed his athletic ability in football by gaining over 1,000 yards running. This is the most that any football player in the history of Washington High School or of Warren Hills has ever gained, thus John has set a new record. We’re proud of John and glad that he was part of our team. John adds to his total yardage by tactfully evading his opponent. As the saying goes: “Never catch our man. 19 Coaches: D. Swetnam. A. Without proper guidance from higher channels a school cannot function to meet the educa- tional needs of the student body. Warren Hills is fortunate to have as it’s administrators, out- standing members of the community and highly trained personnel. These people take a whole- hearted interest in the activities of the students in the Warren Hills school system. All decisions that they make influence the entirety of the student body and therefore must be handled with the greatest of care. We, as students, take pride in our school board and respect it’s decisions. Our gratitude is shown in our cooperative attitude, working together to make Warren Hills a unique school system. 76 Business Manager Mr. Lawrence Stopp 77 Superintendent School year ’67 ’68 was a year for the Regional Schools to begin. In ’68 '69 they have forged ahead! The progress, however, was not an inevitable move- ment, for positive achievement by groups of people comes only from the cooperative effort of individual members of the group. At Regional, such cooperation- from students, parents and staff has been the princi- pal ingredient of success. Now, at year’s end, we all look two ways — back to these achievements, but forward, too. to continued education, new challenges and different ways of ap- proaching the life ahead. My own hope is that your past experiences here will serve you as you face this future. Be assured of our continued interest in all that you do. 78 Mr. Lawrence Anderson Principal Mr. Eric Errickson “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incre- dulity ... it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair —Dickens Overtones of Dickens’ thoughts exist in any age to some degree. Certainly in the year of your graduation. 1968-69. they existed to a pronounced degree. Space probes and orbital moon flights inaugurated man’s first true journeys in space; medical experimentation raised life expectancy to unprecedented levels; rates of employment and gross national product reached unmatched proportions. Yet. withal, conflict and pro- test wars and threats of wars brought heartache and misery, hunger, and deprivation that equaled any known in the history of mankind. Vietnam, Czechoslo- vakia. crime on the increase, inflation and a host of threats strike fear in the hearts of young and old. Faced with these threats of evil and promises of good, may you undergird your lives and the homes you will establish with those spiritual “constants” of honesty, integrity, hope, faith, and love which alone will bring peace to your souls and to mankind. 79 Vice- Principal There will always be dissident voices in our society, expressing opposition without alternatives, finding fault but never favor, perceiving gloom on every side and seeking influence without responsibility. Those voices are inevitable. But today other voices are also heard. Voices which preach more than slo- gans and realize that a society’s strength is more than a matter of words or fancy slogans. These voices real- ize that progressive leadership must be guided by knowledge and reason or else those who confuse rhet- oric with reality will gain popular approval with their seemingly swift and simple solutions to every problem. Our successful pursuit of progress will be due to the words we use. but to the determination, intelligence, and character we stand ready to use on behalf of the principles we value in our lives, our school and our country. “To have succeeded is to have finished one’s business on earth I like a state of continual becoming with a goal in front and'not behind” George Bernard Shaw With best wishes for success in achieving your goal. 80 Mr. William Irons Mrs. Susan Bodine Superintendent’s Secretary Mrs. Shirley Magavero Principal's Secretary Mrs. Mae Frey Business Manager's Secretary Miss Dorothy Rost Guidance Secretary Secretarial Staff A secretary's work seems to go on forever. Weller A good teacher possesses patience and understanding, a well developed mind, and a genuine sense of responsibility towards students. Warren Hills is losing such a teacher this year. Miss Ruth I. Weller. Miss Weller has announced that she will retire at the end of this year. The loss to Warren Hills will be felt by administrators, faculty, and students alike. Most of us remember Miss Weller as a capable administrator, who handled all her tasks, both routine and non-routine, with ef- ficiency and assurance. In her role as a mathematics teacher, Miss Weller excels in her ability to clarify important facts for her students. All she needs to see is a puzzled expression, and this prompts her further ex- planation of the material. Everyone knows that figures can be frightening at first, but Miss Weller teaches her pupils to fight back with their minds. We are truly grateful to Miss Weller for her dedication to her job and wish her many happy years in her retirement. 101 I'll never understand them. Not Pictured: Mrs. K. Each offi- cer is joined inseparably with the others by effort and responsibility. No class office functions well with less than all parts operating at top efficien- cy. This has been the outstanding characteristic of the Class of 1969 offi- cers: a quality performance. Class Officers 165 William Chatenka — President Two roads diverged in a yellow wood. And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh. I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. — Robert Frost 167 MARTIN V. COUGHLIN Seniors . .. MOST CONGENIAL: Vicky Sbriscia and Bill Chatenka.
